Based (loosely) on Sir Philip Sidney's Arcadia, Head Over Heels is a farce in which Pamela (Bonnie Milligan) falls in love with her handmaiden Mopsa (Taylor Iman Jones); Philoclea (Alexandra Socha) enters into an illicit affair with the shepherd Musidorus (Andrew Durand), disguised in drag as an Amazon warrior; and everyone ultimately falls somewhere on the LGBTQ spectrum and rejects the gender binary.
But this new, six-episode TV version boasts two major elements that make it worth checking out: director Park Chan-wook, whose films (including The Handmaiden and Oldboy) neatly bridge the gap between deep character studies and genre exercises; and actress Florence Pugh, who turns in a marvelous performance as a young woman drawn into a web of espionage and intrigue.
Hence the minutiae that you will bear away from "The Handmaiden," whether you like it or not: Kouzouki's blackened tongue, which he uses to moisten a paintbrush; a naked figure, inked onto paper so thin that it can be rolled and smoked; and, best of all, Sookee reaching softly into her mistress's mouth, with a thimbled finger, to file down the sharpness of a tooth.
Waters knows her way around period-set genre stories (her novel Fingersmith was adapted into the irresistible 2016 erotic thriller The Handmaiden), and The Little Stranger wraps fascinating ideas about class, gender, and the nature of evil into a ghost story set in postwar Britain; in the hands of director Lenny Abrahamson, who directed 2015's Room, it could be something really special. —GK
We soon met three women, dressed like laborers, who were, in fact, the three Fates, spinning the thread of life and deliberating Dido's future: the sweet soprano Anna Christy, who later sang Belinda, Dido's sister and handmaiden; the rich mezzo-soprano Sarah Mesko; and the amazing Ms. Clark, as the Fate who makes the final calls on people's mortality, and who later stole every scene she was in as Purcell's Sorceress.
This isn't the most compelling trailer of the week, but I love the story behind it: the film was shot at the Cannes film festival while Isabelle Huppert and Kim Min-hee were there to promote other movies (Elle and The Handmaiden), meaning it was likely a rushed shoot (the film comes in at barely over an hour long) and maybe just done to give all these actors an excuse to work together.
