Handcars are nowadays used by handcar enthusiasts at vintage railroad events and for races between handcars driven by five person teams (one to push the car from a halt, four to pump the lever). Sugar cane tram in Miyako Island, 1939 Prior to World War II, railways were in use in various places, but all disappeared after the war. Locations included what are present-day Nishihara, Kadena, and Itoman. The islands of Ishigaki and Miyako also had lines to move sugar cane, and Iriomote had handcar lines for the coal mines. Kita Daito and Oki Daito had similar lines for phosphate mines.

The working yard - with many switches, lights, outbuildings, a functional electric-powered turntable and water tower - is punctuated with dozens of static displays: two steam-powered tractors, early gas-powered tractors, compressors, pumps, wheelsets, and assorted railroad paraphernalia - a two-man handcar, "tricycle"-type one-man handcar, bells, signals, and luggage carts. The Yabuzuka Quarry opened a gauge handcar line between Ota and Yabuzuka in 1911 to haul stone blocks. The line was acquired by Tobu in March 1913, rebuilt to gauge and extended to Aioi on 19 March 1913, operating using steam haulage. The line was electrified at 1,500 V DC from 1 March 1928, and in March 1932 extended to Akagi. Freight services ceased in 1996, with the last service running on 25 September.

Connaught Tunnel In 1919, 30 drums of gasoline and kerosene, used by the concrete mixers engaged in the lining operation, ignited. A tunnel watchman, who rushed some distance to the nearest telephone to alert Connaught station at the eastern portal, did not survive. His warning saved the westbound transcontinental, then at the station, from proceeding into the tunnel. Nine workers escaped on a handcar from the east portal, and one watchman staggered from the west portal.

Handcars have been normally used by railway service personnel (the latter also known as Gandy dancers) for railroad inspection and maintenance. In 1995, Ralph and Eugenia Bangay purchased the long-abandoned Brighton Station from CN for $400 as a place to store a growing collection of Brighton rail memorabilia. They restored the gentlemen's waiting room, express office and agent's room in the old brick station to house hundreds of artefacts, using the ladies' passenger waiting room as a souvenir shop. A 1906 Grand Trunk 2-8-0 steam locomotive (#2534), relocated from Zwick's Park in nearby Belleville, occupies pride of place alongside two box cars (one from 1913), a flat car, three cabooses (including one from 1929) and an 1898 velocipede (a handcar used by repair workers to travel along the tracks). The Murrow Building, which served before 1920 as a distribution point for Ford motorcars destined for dealers from Bowmanville to Gananoque, houses additional memorabilia.

Buddy quickly regains his senses, and takes under his control a handcar, eventually grabbing on to the wire of the trolley car, kicking the thief in the face, twice, and then taking Cookie and swinging over to his emergency vehicle. The jailbreak soon sees that he is to collide with a stalled truck full of dynamite, and though the owner of the truck attempts to start his motor, it is no use and both streetcar and transport truck explode. The owner of the truck is left quite scarred and dazed, and the prisoner is dizzily seated on the ground of a pig pen.

In this episode, titled "The Valley Has a Baby", Benaderet provided only her voice for scenes of Betty Jo and Steve reading a letter from Kate; her speaking to Cannonball engineer Wendell Gibbs over the phone and using the handcar with him to get to the hospital; and her presence at Betty Jo's bedside after the baby's arrival. The latter segments featured Benaderet's stand-in, actress Edna Laird, portraying Kate with her back to the camera. The episode additionally featured three short flashbacks of Kate from season five: "You Know I Can't Hear You When The Thunder Is Clapping", where Betty Jo reveals to Kate that Steve and she are in love; "A Cottage For Two", where Betty Jo's dream house turns out to be an old shack; and "With This Gown I Thee Wed", where Steve and Betty Jo get married. The episode aired just 13 days after Benaderet's death on October 13, 1968.

A speeder (also known as railway motor car, putt-putt, track-maintenance car, crew car, jigger, trike, quad, trolley, inspection car, or a draisine) is a maintenance of way motorized vehicle formerly used on railroads around the world by track inspectors and work crews to move quickly to and from work sites. Although it is slow compared to a train or car, it is called speeder because it is faster than a human-powered vehicle such as a handcar (draisine). Motorised inspection cars date back to at least 1896, when it was reported that the U.S. Daimler Motor Company created a gasoline-powered rail inspection car capable of 15 mph (24 km/h).Notes of the Month, The Automotor and Horesless Carriage Journal, December 1896, p103 In the 1990s, many speeders were replaced with trucks (usually pickup trucks or sport utility vehicles) using flanged wheels that could be lowered for on-rail (called road- rail vehicles or hi-rails for highway-railroad).
