During an interview John Stalker, Deputy Chief Constable of Greater Manchester in the early 1980s and himself a Detective Inspector in 1973, has stated that the depiction of the police "has got nothing to do with real policing in the 1970s. It could not be more inaccurate in terms of procedure, the way they talk or the way they dress. In all the time I was in the CID in the 1970s I never saw a copper in a leather bomber jacket and I never heard an officer call anyone 'guv'. ... Actually, there were a few police officers in London who started to behave like Regan and Carter in The Sweeney, but that was a case of life following art, not the other way round".

In the second series, after Morse returns to active duty following his being shot, Jakes seems to no longer be jealous toward Morse and no longer picks on him, believing him to have earned his keep. Instead the two work together and Morse respects Jakes' rank. In the Series 2 finale, it is revealed that in the mid-1950s as a child, Jakes stayed at a home for wayward boys in Kidlington called Blenheim Vale, where he was nicknamed "Little Pete" by the other boys. Only staying a short time, Jakes was one of many boys who were the victims of sexual and physical assault by the "guv" of Blenheim Vale (now Alderman Wintergreen), a young Oxfordshire police officer (now Assistant Chief Constable Deare), and several other adult men in charge of the home.

The win set up an East Division finals match with Chatham. Smith homered again in Game 1 at Red Wilson Field, and Y-D took the slugfest, 9–8. The Sox completed their second series sweep in Game 2 on the road, getting six effective innings by starter William Montgomery, and prevailing by a 4–1 tally, sending the Sox to a title series match against Falmouth. The Sox fell to Falmouth, 5–4, in the Game 1 opener at Guv Fuller Field. In Game 2 at home, Y-D jumped out to a 3–0 lead in the first on back- to-back homers by Toffey and Deon Stafford, Jr., and got a two-run clout in the fourth by Smith, knotting the series with a 9–4 win.

Chatham completed the sweep with a 3–0 win in Game 2 on the strength of second baseman Jermaine Clark's two-run double, and advanced to the title series against Falmouth. The 1996 championship series opened at Guv Fuller Field, with Chatham catcher Scott Fitzgerald stifling the Falmouth attack early on in Game 1, cutting down three stolen base attempts in the first three innings. Chatham pushed across three runs playing small-ball and A's starter Seth Etherton was masterful, twirling eight shutout innings and striking out 14 before turning it over to Anderson for the ninth-inning save in the A's 3–0 win. Evans took the mound for the A's in Game 2 at home and followed up his 11-inning semi-finals outing with a complete game gem.

Pickler's first title came in 2004, when the team rolled through the playoffs, sweeping Brewster in the semi-finals, and sweeping Falmouth in the finals. The Red Sox took Game 1 of the title series at home, 4–3, on shortstop Ryan Rohlinger's game-winning 8th inning homer. Game 2 of the finals was an all-time classic, with the Sox coming back to tie the game at Guv Fuller Field in the ninth inning on an RBI by CCBL Outstanding New England Player Award winner Frank Curreri. With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth, Y-D outfielder Jim Rapaport made a game-saving diving catch on a sinking liner to right. In the top of the 11th, Y-D opened it up with four runs, including a two-run bomb by Nick Moresi, to secure the 8–4 victory and claim the league crown.

In the pilot episode, having been transferred to CID after only two years as a uniformed police constable, the young DC Morse soon becomes disillusioned with law enforcement and begins writing a resignation letter. Before he can resign, Morse is sent with other detectives from the Carshall-Newtown Police to the Oxford City Police's Cowley Police Station to assist in investigating the case of a missing fifteen-year-old schoolgirl. Having studied at Oxford gives Morse advantages and disadvantages when dealing with Oxford's "town and gown" divide. During the pilot episode, he tenders his resignation but his superior, veteran Detective Inspector Fred Thursday (Roger Allam, who had been in the Inspector Morse episode "Death is Now My Neighbour" 15 years earlier), the "guv" at the Oxford City Police's CID, sees in him an unblemished detective whom he can trust and takes him under his wing to be his new "bag man" (assistant), replacing a corrupt detective sergeant.
