After an elaborately choreographed goodbye, we took a digestive stroll in the seaside air, passing through the gaudy Kanazawa downtown with its Ginza-style flashing lights, its kuru kuru (conveyor belt) sushi restaurants (Japanese is rich in onomatopoetic words, and "kuru kuru" is the sound of a conveyor belt; say it fast and you'll understand), its knickknack shops, bars and omnipresent FamilyMart convenience stores.

That says an awful lot about WWE's strengths and weaknesses: the weight of moments on a stage that big and gaudy can mean so much, but they still haven't found someone to take his place, and it's not down to a dearth of talent, but an unwillingness to ride the hot hand, whether that was Dean Ambrose two years ago or Shinsuke Nakamura on his debut.

Even if you despise the place—if you don't care about anything going on there now; you think it's a gaudy, stinking embarrassment: Leicester Square in an Anthrax hoody—I doubt you want Camden to become a "Borough Market of north London," or worse yet a second Shoreditch—a once cheap and free zone for young people that out-prices you quicker than the skyline rises.

Devil May Cry 5 is not style over substance, it's style as substance, and that approach is what pervades the cheesy grading system, the snarky but surprisingly loveable greaseball characters, its gaudy aesthetic, a nonsense storyline that takes itself seriously enough that you're not sure what to make of it (Lore Reasons?), and the other pieces that make Devil May Cry 5 click in place.

True, there were obligatory Hadid and Jenner sightings on the runway of Dsquared, where Bella Hadid opened and Kendall Jenner closed a show that had a rhinestone-cowboy theme that felt somehow halfhearted, lacking the crazed exuberance of the wonderfully gaudy stuff once devised for country music greats like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Gene Autry (and Elvis and Cher) by the inimitable Nudie Cohn.
