West Cheshire College's origins can be traced back to the early 19th Century when a number of scientific, literary and philosophical societies were formed in Chester to promote and encourage learning and the expansion of knowledge. In the 1990s, the education sector became independent from the government and NCFE became a national company, and thus were no longer known as the Northern Council for Further Education, but simply as the standalone NCFE.
In the event, the newly elected Labour government accepted the findings of the Dearing Report into Higher Education, leading to the creation of the Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (ILTHE) and indicated that the General Teaching Council (GTC) for England, which had been a manifesto commitment, would be established. In 1999, within a backdrop of growing concern from teachers in further education about a sense of de- professionalising the sector, the FESDF became the Further Education National Training Organisation (FENTO). One of the FESDF's proposed objectives for FENTO was the need to give consideration to the role that a professional body for further education could play in the professionalisation agenda; this become one of FENTO's key strategic objectives. In 2000, three research studies were carried into the feasibility of creating a professional body for further education, two commissioned by FENTO and one a contemporary piece of academic research. Effectively, each was an exercise in market research and, based in sample sizes in the low thousands, the outcomes were consistent – two-thirds of staff surveyed were in support, 30% wanted to ‘wait and see’ and less than 10% were opposed.

Following the introduction of the Education Act 1944, the Essex Education Committee acquired the majority of the Nelmes Estate in Hornchurch, including Victorian era Ardleigh House and surrounding 15 acres of land. Ardleigh House was initially used as a community and youth centre, and as a centre for part-time day release courses. The facilities were very basic, confined to upstairs rooms, and allowed only for basic instruction. Some years later, two additional classrooms with storage space were built, and the local authority Further Education Committee started to plan for an assembly hall and craft workshops for what was then called ‘Ardleigh House Centre for Further Education’.
In 2001 the secondary school was moved to its current location in Summerhill and its further education section, originally just two courses (business studies and computer studies for adults and secretarial), took up sole occupancy on the "Annabella" campus at West End street where it remains today. A further period of rationalisation of post-secondary education began in 1974, with the release of the draft report of the Australian Commission on Technical and Further Education. This report recognised that because of rapid school change and the creation of new industries, society's needs and expectations for technical education had changed in the previous decade. It recommended that community resources for adult and technical education be rationalised and expanded to meet these new needs and expectations. In consequence, further funds were made available to technical and further education in 1975-76, and in January 1977 the integration of the two areas was completed and TAFE formally came into existence.

The Northern Union of Mechanics’ Institutes (NUMI), NCFE's founding organisation, was established in 1848. NUMI's first report proclaimed its objective to "become a centre from whence the elements of knowledge and civilisation shall go on with an unceasing progress, conferring intellectual, scientific and moral blessings throughout the length and breadth of the Northern Counties." Part of the increase in student numbers was due to diversification. At the post-secondary level, vocational education is often provided by highly specialized trade schools, technical schools, community colleges, colleges of further education (UK), universities, as well as institutes of technology (formerly called polytechnic institutes). Historically, almost all vocational education took place in the classroom or on the job site, with students learning trade skills and trade theory from accredited instructors or established professionals. North West Regional College is a further education and higher education college in the north-west region of Northern Ireland. Challney High School for Girls is a school comprehensive secondary school for girls, located in the Challney area of Luton, Bedfordshire, England. The school is situated next to Challney High School for Boys. The school educates girls aged 11 – 16. Due to lack of money to pay for further education, Thomas Byrth took an apprenticeship at a chemist and druggist company in Plymouth founded by William Cookworthy (1705–80), a Quaker and pioneer porcelain manufacturer. Byrth was an apprentice with Cookworthys from 1809 to 1814. Byrth became a close friend of Samuel Rowe (1793–1853), a bookseller and antiquarian.

TECs operated as private limited companies and reported on their progress to their regional government office. The TECs were abolished in April 2001 under the Learning and Skills Act 2000. In England, their functions, along with those of the Further Education Funding Council, were taken over by the Learning and Skills Council. In Wales, they were replaced by ELWa.

Jonathan David Harris, CBE, (born 28 September 1941) qualified as a chartered surveyor in the United Kingdom and went on to become President of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in 2000/2001. He is Founder and Chairman of the Harris Foundation for Lifelong Learning, and has received honours for his services to surveying and to further education.

Frank Redpath (1927-1990) was a Hull poet. He taught at Hull College of Further Education, after a period writing for children's comics in London. He features in Douglas Dunn's 1982 anthology of Hull poets A Rumoured City, alongside Sean O’Brien, Douglas Houston and Peter Didsbury. Fellow Hull poet Philip Larkin contributed a preface to the anthology.
