In 2015, Pseudoubt released their second album Where Nothing Grows, featuring the likes of Myka 9 (of Freestyle Fellowship, Kristoff Krane, Onry Ozzborn (of Grayskul and Dark Time Sunshine), and other local Minneapolis musicians and emcees. Their lead single "Opaque" peaked at #3 on Radio K's top 7 hit-list. La pájara Peggy or "Peggy the Bird", a large, bright yellow, gawky bird that looked more like a duck and spoke in an obnoxious voice audaciously interrupting cast member. During the first two years of the show, Navarro himself dressed up in the yellow bird outfit and had outrageous interactions with the emcees, often whacking the unsuspecting emcee over the head with a wing or a kick in the shins with a big webbed foot. These slapstick antics sent the stage hands into uproarious laughter and sent Navarro's bosses into shock. At the time, it was unheard of that a Televisa executive would dress up in a big yellow bird suit and act silly on national television.
Like all drag performers, AFAB drag queens play with traditional gender roles and gender norms to educate and entertain. AFAB queens can appear alongside drag kings or drag queens at drag shows and are interchangeable with other drag queens as emcees, performers, hostesses, and spokesmodels. For some it can be a way to redefine postmodern feminism; AFAB queen Ms. Lucia Love stated, "Drag queens would be nowhere without women." For others it simply is about dressing up and having fun. In San Francisco, the first ever "Faux Queen" pageant was produced as a benefit by Diet PopstituteDiet Popstitute, aka Michael Joseph Collins; 1958 - 1995 Alvin Orloff and the first title holder was Coca Dietetica aka Laurie Bushman.

The case, however, was quietly settled. In response to criticism, he together with award-winning rapper Gloc 9 and Mitchell Silonga released a single entitled "Alay Ko" in 2009, a song about Agassi's thoughts on destructive criticisms.

Beatrice Hazlehurst of Paper praised Cardi B for "proving she's far from a one-hit wonder" with her verse. Aaron Williams of Uproxx described the song as "an aptly titled, fast-paced, Master P-esque trunk rattler", and wrote that the song "owes a lot to the sound cultivated by Master P twenty years ago, with plenty of New Orleans bounce", as the three artists on the track "deliver their usual unsophisticatedly entertaining signature styles on their verses". He added that Cardi B's verse is "especially entertaining as she wittily compares her current charts success to 'pussy popping'". Matt Fish of HotNewHipHop regarded it as "a tight, radio-ready track" that features "an energetic trap beat" that "provides a bouncy backbone for all three emcees".

While it can take around a decade to make a living at comedy, unknown comedians may achieve great financial success. Hosts and MCs are paid $0-$200, depending on location and the time of week (emcees average $25); showcase spots get $10-$75; features get approximately $300-$600; a headliner with no following gets $150-$1500, depending on many factors; headliners with a following or TV credits can make $1,500-$10,000 per show. The headliner makes "10 times" more money than the feature act. Famous headliners get paid from "door deals," or a percentage of the revenue, based on the number of seats sold; these comics rely on their notoriety to fill seats, which makes them more money than headliners with no following.

Beginning in the end of 1996 and throughout 1997 (during the commercial height of Puff Daddy's pop-oriented Bad Boy Records during its Arista Records years), mafioso hip-hop gradually lost its critical acclaim within the underground scene from which it originated. As it crossed over into the mainstream, the concept was becoming increasingly generic (as seen with the hip hop supergroup the Firm, which rhymed almost exclusively about the mafioso life). Upon the release of The War Report, however, Capone and Noreaga brought new life into the gangsta rap subgenre, becoming an instant underground phenomenon that foreshadowed the rise of similarly styled emcees who went on to cross into the mainstream for the remainder of the mid 1990s (i.e., Royal Flush and Mic Geronimo), into the late 1990s (i.e.

In the song, Cam'ron takes jabs at Jay-Z's age, his alleged "biting" (stealing) of lyrics, and his current girlfriend. He references Jay-Z using The Notorious B.I.G.'s rhymes, rapping "You ain't the only one with big wallets got it my shit's brolick but ya publishing should go to Miss Wallace." He then released another song "Swagger Jacker (Biter Not a Writer)" to highlight the many songs Jay-Z has borrowed lines from. In the next issue of XXL, Cam'ron explained the beef originated when Jay-Z became CEO and President of Roc-A-Fella Records.

After the release of Wanted: Dead or Alive tensions arouse between Kool G Rap and Eric B. who produced and mixed most of the songs on the album. Rather than using the same formula that he used on his two previous albums, Kool G Rap decided to give Live and Let Die a cinematic feel with each song telling a different story and providing backdrops for the respective scenes. He recruited several non-East Coast artists to assist him on the album, such as West Coast emcee Ice Cube and his cohort, producer Sir Jinx, and Southern emcees such as Scarface and Bushwick Bill (from the Geto Boys). Although the album was originally intended to be released in 1991; its original release encountered several dilemmas due to record label issues, and the album's controversial content.
Ruza Blue, nicknamed "Kool Lady Blue", founded an all-races dance club in June 1982 (formerly at Club Negril 1981 - 82) which featured a mash up of all musical styles from early hip hop, electro, funk, soul, disco, rock, punk, dub and electronic dance music. Jon Baker, the future founder of Gee Street Records, worked the door. Hip hop pioneers such as Grand Mixer D.ST and Afrika Bambaataa began DJing there and the club sponsored breaking or b-boy/b-girl competitions featuring the Rock Steady Crew, Floor Master Crew New York City Breakers, graffiti artists' murals, and even double- exhibitions by The Fantastic Four local American Double Dutch League champions with emcees hosting the nights. Artists such as Madonna, Run DMC, Kraftwerk, Shannon, Malcolm McLaren, New Edition, Kurtis Blow, The Beastie Boys and Yello performed there.

From 1984 to 1986, during the same period Mantronix as a group was signed to Sleeping Bag Records, Mantronik was also individually employed by the label in its A&R; Department, where he signed hip-hop group EPMD to its first recording contract with sister label Fresh Records. In addition to being an A&R; representative for the label, Mantronik also produced recordings for other Sleeping Bag and Fresh Records associated artists and groups, including emcees KRS-One, Just-Ice, and T La Rock; freestyle vocalist Nocera; and R&B; singer-songwriter Joyce Sims. The origins of trap music's beats have been traced back to the work of Kurtis Mantronik during this era. The earliest song to be identified as an early form of trap music is Mantronik's single "Bass Machine" (1986), featuring rap vocals by T La Rock.
The video features an urban surrounding and many reminders of deceased emcees and contemporary R&B; singers through empty rooms, wind, and liquor being poured out in a gesture of respect and remembrance. Nas mentions both Islam and Christianity as ways for one to have or regain faith, as Nas considers himself a spiritual and faithful person, yet doesn't make it clear which religion he associates himself with. Nas also mentions his own mother, saying, "Mommy, I'm still here, wishing I was there with you..." Quan mentions his fallen friends and his promise of taking care of his sister's child, while she is in Iraq. The video version of the song also interprets a change in the fact that the third verse (originally Quan) was changed to having Nas put in an additional rhyme replacing the end of the third verse.
The R.O.C.'s first album was released with his cousin Big Father Hightop (Evol of Detroit) & produced by Esham under Strength Productions, titled "Rollin' With Strength". In late 1992, The R.O.C. teamed up with fellow Detroit emcees Paul Methric and Jamie Spaniolo, and the trio then formed House of Krazees. The R.O.C. was first originally the producer of the group and was asked to perform on a couple tracks and it was then decided by Jamie (who went by the name of Mr. Bones) and Paul (who went by the name of Hektic) that he would be the third member. House of Krazees' catalog was only released on cassette until the group signed to Latnem Intertainment. Problems between House of Krazees and Latnem led the group to leave the label following its 1996 album, Head Trauma.
Remixed is a remix album by KJ-52, featuring a reggaeton mix of Behind the Musiks "Jesus", "47 Emcees (Plus 18 More Mix)" which reimagines the originally beatbox-driven track with multiple layered beats, each corresponding to the verse's genre; East Coast, West Coast, old school, and Dirty South, and an angst-driven, Linkin Park-inspired nu metal remix of hit "Are You Real?" featuring an emo rock hook provided by Falling Up's Jessy Ribordy. Unlike most rap remix albums, the songs' lyrics are also reimagined here with at least first verse of each track rewritten. "Plain White Rapper (Kalimba Remix)", which was featured in Hip Hope Hits 2007, was reportedly intended to be a collaborative effort between KJ-52 and John Reuben (who previously appeared in the Collaborations song "The Choice Is Yours"). The album won the 2007 Dove Award for "Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year".
A popular line from the song, "My dear my dear my dear you do not know me but I know you very well now let me tell you," was also repeated in the same manner in "Stutter" (the remix featuring Mystikal) with the only difference between the lines being that the words "about the feelings I have for you" were changed to "that I caught you" in "Stutter." The group's four emcees, Bootie Brown, Slimkid3, Imani, and Fatlip, all use the track to recount schoolboy crushes which all eventually led to heartbreak, and the chorus features a male vocalist singing "She keeps on passin' me by" against a soprano saxophone riff. The song peaked at #1 on the Hot Rap Singles, #52 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #28 on the Hot R&B;/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks charts. Pitchfork Media's included the song at number 41 on their Top 200 Tracks of the 90s.
The late jazz musician Weldon Irvine played the keys on the album's opening song, "Astronomy," which interprets the word "black" in a positive way, and contains similes such as "Black, like my baby girl's hair". The next song, and first single, "Definition", is a stern response to hip hop's fascination with death, and a dedication to slain emcees Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G.. As the chorus goes, "One two three/Mos Def and Talib Kweli/We came to rock it on to the tip top/Best alliance in hip hop, Y-O/I said, one two three/It's kinda dangerous to be a MC/They shot 2Pac and Biggie/Too much violence in hip hop, Y-O". The chorus is also a play on Boogie Down Productions' anti-gun song "Stop the Violence", as well as "Remix For P Is Free" from their album Criminal Minded. "Children's Story" is a re-imagined version of Slick Rick's original, which features Mos Def cautioning overly materialistic pursuits.
In an attempt to capitalize, Sporty Thievz also released a rebuttal to Destiny's Child's hits "Bills, Bills, Bills" (written by the same songwriter as "No Scrubs", Kandi Burruss) and "Independent Women". The "Bills Bills Bills" rebuttal, entitled "Can't Pay Your Bills", demands "I need a lady working 9-5 to help her man out" (not to be confused with the track entitled "No Billz (Why, Why, Why?)" in which the group "humorously" questions "Why we gotta spend, because we men?"). In the "Independent Women" rebuttal "Independent Men" they consider the unfairness of child support, stating "She won't let me see my seed acting like it's funny, She gettin' her hair done with that diaper money". The group contributed to the Rawkus Records 2000 compilation Hip Hop for Respect, a project put together by Mos Def and Talib Kweli to put out an EP recording 41 emcees in protest over the 41 shots fired at African immigrant and innocent man, Amadou Diallo, by the NYPD.
Kool Moe Dee states that Biggie introduced a newer flow which "dominated from 1994 to 2002", and also says that Method Man was "one of the emcees from the early to mid-'90s that ushered in the era of flow ... Rakim invented it, Big Daddy Kane, KRS-One, and Kool G Rap expanded it, but Biggie and Method Man made flow the single most important aspect of an emcee's game". He also cites Craig Mack as an artist who contributed to developing flow in the '90s. Music scholar Adam Krims says, "the flow of MCs is one of the profoundest changes that separates out new-sounding from older-sounding music ... it is widely recognized and remarked that rhythmic styles of many commercially successful MCs since roughly the beginning of the 1990s have progressively become faster and more 'complex'". He cites "members of the Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, AZ, Big Pun, and Ras Kass, just to name a few" as artists who exemplify this progression.
McCormack began his 23-year policing career working at 52 Division, in downtown Toronto's entertainment district, where his older brother, William Jr., was assigned from 1996 until his suspension in April 2004, when criminal charges for corruption were laid in relation to "shaking down club owners" in 52 Division and William Jr. resigned in March 2009 although the criminal charges for soliciting and accepting bribes were stayed for excessive delay by Crown prosecutors and the lead police investigator. Mike subsequently moved to 51 Division, policing Toronto's Regent Park district, which he "loved", later indicating "Regent Park was my niche". In 2002, 51 Division's McCormack, Detective Constable Jack Caccavale, and Detective Scott Matthews, of the Toronto Police Drug Squad, co-founded the annual event which McCormack co- emcees. The event was started to boost morale following the suspension of several 51 Division officers, including former TPA president Craig Bromell, for allegedly beating up homeless man Thomas Kerr.
Eventually, battle rap moved to a format which is now the predominant form of battle rap, where two emcees battle against each other without a beat, trading prewritten verses in three- round battles. The impromptu aspect of battling still exists in the form of rebuttals, which are short rhymes (usually in the beginning of a verse) where an emcee either comments on something about their opponent that was thought up on the spot (for instance, making fun of the shirt they're wearing), or responds to something their opponent said during their previous round. While not as prominent as it once was, the art of rebutting is still respected by many as difficult to do correctly, and a sign of a well-rounded emcee. While many creative minds were battling and organizing battles in the early 2000s, Troy “Smack” Mitchell of Queens New York gathered battle rappers of hood renown including Serius Jones of New Jersey and Loaded Lux, Murda Mook and Jae Millz of Harlem, Smack began recording battles, printing and hand-selling the DVDs—a cutting edge technological and artistic hustle at the time.
While deciding how to best utilize this new creative growth, he came across and befriended Rampage of Flipmode Squad Fame, the cousin of Busta Rhymes, who recruited Raiford onto his label Deep Freeze. Raiford refined his craft and learned a lot from the veteran emcee before eventually disengaging in order to better manage his own career. Raiford immediately sought to obtain dominance over and recognition from his immediate scene in Phoenix, AZ by releasing singles to local DJs, engaging in notable record battles resulting in dethroning of respected emcees from the community, and finding his way onto terrestrial radio.
