Groups including the Internet Association, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) — who also signed Monday's letter — criticized the policy in a separate letter released in August.
The government has sued in California to try to unmask the source of those files, with little luck to date; EFF is defending their company in a related case in New York.
The EFF filed suit on behalf of Johns Hopkins computer science researcher Matthew Green and hacker / inventor Andrew "bunnie" Huang, both of whom argue that the DMCA's rules are impeding their work.
