At $25 a ticket, Wedding Crashers attracts a specific Brooklyn demographic, with young, hip folks in nice leather jackets bearing totes advertising the Dodo and HQ. When I walked into the hall, a con volunteer was handing out tote bags from the One (a "registry collective" from Williams Sonoma that started in October 2018).

Group Nine was created in 2016, when cable TV giant Discovery contributed cash and some assets to a joint venture with three companies with ties to the Lerer family: Thrillist, a lifestyle publisher aimed at young men; the Dodo, a site dedicated to animals and people who love them; and NowThis, a video news publisher.

At times it's super-literal, but Duffy's fearlessness, Eve Gigliotti's dedication to the part of Dodo (Bess's only friend and confidante), James Darrah's Beckettian staging, Mazzoli's black metal album outro-esque score, and the story—this is the guy who wrote Antichrist we're talking about—all lend something formally exciting to the show, and to the Prototype Festival as a whole.

And it's worth noting that most of the merging companies have a Lerer family connection — NowThis was founded by Eric Hippeau and Ben Lerer's father Ken (they were also among the founders of The Huffington Post and now invest through Lerer Hippeau Ventures), while The Dodo was founded by Ben's sister Izzie (who will "continue to be responsible for the brand").

While there are no recent works on display, with the exception of an archival pigment print of a dodo bird, one of Beck's preoccupations, I would urge anyone interested in what can be done with kinetic sculpture or a diorama, or who is a fan of Joseph Cornell, William Wiley, or H. C Westermann — outliers who created self-contained worlds governed by strange laws and populated by mysterious figures — to go to this exhibition.
