Trebević () is a mountain in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, located to the southeast of Sarajevo, in the territory of East Sarajevo city, bordering Jahorina mountain. Trebević is tall, making it the second shortest of the Sarajevo mountains. During the Middle Ages, Trebević was known as Zlatni Do. During the 1984 Winter Olympics Trebević, like the other Sarajevo mountains, was used for a number of Olympic events, such as bobsledding. Trebević today is important as a tourist destination for citizens of Sarajevo as Igman or Bjelašnica.

Arend Glas (born 29 October 1968 in Joure) is a Dutch bobsledder who has competed from 1992 to 2006. He began his career in bobsledding in 1992 in Igls. Competing in two Winter Olympics, he earned his best finish of 16th both in the two-man event at Salt Lake City in 2002 and in the four-man event at Turin in 2006. At the FIBT World Championships, Glas earned his best finish of 12th in the two-man event at St.Moritz in FIBT World Championships 2001.

Javelin throwing is not Mikkola's only claim to fame. His first sport was wrestling, which he did for ten years or more and is now exploring the sport of bobsledding. Esko was a research assistant at The University of Arizona, Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and has published numerous papers in the fields of prognostic cells and radiation effects. As of spring 2008, Mikkola has completed his Ph.D. and has returned to Finland for the summer to concentrate on training for the 2008 Olympics.

It is the basis of three Olympic sports: luge, skeleton and bobsledding. When practised on sand, it is known as a form of sandboarding. In Russia sledges are used for maritime activities including fishing and commuting from island to island on ice.

In addition to bobsledding, Fred Fortune was a fine skier and he served during World War II in the 10th Mountain Division Ski Troops, during which time he earned a Bronze Star After the war, he returned to Lake Placid where he won the 1947 North American 2-man title with his Olympic partner, Sky Carron. Fortune’s occupation was as a contractor. He founded and built two towns – North Pole, New York and North Pole, Colorado (on Pikes Peak) – both Santa Claus Children's Villages.

Flowers was a star sprinter and long jumper at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and originally aspired to make the U.S. Summer Olympic Team. After several failed attempts, Flowers turned to bobsledding, and found success as a brakewoman almost immediately. At the 2002 Winter Olympics, she, along with driver Jill Bakken, won the gold medal in the two-woman event, becoming the first African American woman to win a gold medal in the Winter Olympics. After the Salt Lake City Games, Flowers gave birth to twins and took some time off from the sport.

During her time with the Pandas, the team qualified four times to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) (now U Sports) national championships winning silver in 2007 and bronze in 2009. In 2012, she moved to Calgary to take up bobsledding. Prior to her first world cup event, Rissling had to raise in order to purchase a sled for competition, after the Canadian bobsleigh team decided to instead allocate the funds towards the men's team. She raised the money through sponsorships and a waitressing job in a Calgary diner.

As a decathlete, Grummt finished eighth at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. He also finished fourth at the 1982 European Championships in Athletics in Athens and eighth at the 1983 World Championships in Athletics in Helsinki. Following East Germany's boycott of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Grummt switched to bobsleigh where he found better success. In bobsledding, Grummt won a complete set of medals at the FIBT World Championships with a gold (Four-man: 1985), a silver (Two- man: 1985), and a bronze (Two-man: 1986).

In July 2011, Thijs Zonneveld, a journalist and semi-professional cyclist, wrote a column in NU.nl about the need for a mountain in the Netherlands. He proposed that the country should build a mountain tall and wide. Although not intended to be a serious suggestion, it quickly gained support from organisations including the Dutch Ski Association, Dutch Climbing and Mountaineering Association (NKBV), and Royal Dutch Cycling Union (KNWU). Zonneveld's column suggested that there would be significant benefits to Dutch sport, noting a lack of success in ski-jumping, bobsledding, and cycling.

Junior eventually gets the money by selling his car, and the team heads off to Canada. In Calgary, Blitzer officially registers the team and manages to acquire a practice sled from an old bobsledding teammate Roger, as the Jamaicans have never been in an actual bobsled nor practiced on ice. In the following weeks, they observe ice skaters and hockey players as they practice walking on ice, and workout intensely to gain strength and cold endurance. Derice is particularly inspired by the Swiss Bobsledders' technique and watches their practice runs.

A fictional all-encompassing winter sports governing body, the "International Alliance of Winter Sports", appears in the film. In reality, each Winter Olympic Sport has its own governing body, and bobsledding falls under the jurisdiction of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (or FIBT, the initials of its French name). The International Olympic Committee (IOC) did temporarily disqualify the Jamaicans, but it was not an appeal by the coach that led the IOC to reverse this decision. Prince Albert of Monaco was among those who made the successful appeal.

Despite both being American citizens and Alexandrou being of Greek descent rather than of Armenian descent, they were granted Armenian residency in order to be eligible to participate. They notably practiced on the streets of San Jose, California on a bobsled fitted with wheels, reminiscent of the famous Jamaican bobsledding team at the 1988 Winter Olympics. This was due to the lack of a proper venue that was available for them to train in as well as financial constraints. They finished in 5th place in the qualifying rounds, only qualifying in their last run.

He also won the Bobsleigh World Cup championship in combined men's (1991–92), two-man (1990–91), and four-man (1991–92, 1995–96). Hoppe a former army major retired from bobsledding after the 1997 FIBT World Championships to become coach of the German national team, coaching such athletes as Susi Erdmann, Sandra Kiriasis, Gabriele Kohlisch, and André Lange. In October 1986, he was awarded a Star of People's Friendship in gold (second class) for his sporting success. He is the brother of motocross racer and 37-time medal winner Heinz Hoppe.

Zardo then went on to compete in bobsledding from 2001 to 2004, where he was part of the Canadian Olympic team in his first year. He won two medals in the two-man event at the FIBT World Championships with a gold in 2004 and a silver in 2003. Zardo left the Canadian bobsleigh team for a disagreement with the federation at the end of 2004. At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Zardo finished fifth in the two-man event and ninth in the four-man event.

Nehmer grew up on Rügen, the son of a farmer. Prior to his role in bobsleigh, Nehmer competed in athletics as a javelin thrower, with a personal best of 81.5 m. After retiring from javelin competition at the age of 30, he was recruited into bobsleigh by coach Horst Hörnlein at the relatively advanced age of 32, although Nehmer initially believed that taking up a new sport at that age would not be worthwhile. At the time of his first Olympic success in 1976, he had only been bobsledding for three years.

Jamaica competed in the Winter Olympic Games for the first time at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. They competed in one sport, Bobsledding, in both the two-man and four-man events and finished outside the medal places in both competitions. Athletes were recruited from the Jamaica Defence Force, which saw Dudley Stokes, Devon Harris and Michael White become the first members of the team. Caswell Allen was the fourth man, but was injured prior to the start of the Olympics and was replaced by Chris Stokes, who was only in Canada to support his brother and new teammate Dudley.

He then recruited a weightlifting champion from Armenia, but his visa application was cancelled in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. Nicola was involved in coaching Ennis during Ennis' early years in athletics. When not bobsledding, Nicola worked as a part-time P.E. teacher and also as an athlete mentor for the Youth Sport trust. It was announced on 10 August 2010 that Minichiello would miss the 2010-11 Bobsleigh World Cup, including the FIBT World Championships 2011, due to a knee injury. Subsequently, in April 2011 Minichiello announced her retirement as a driver and took up a position as head development coach at the sport's governing body, the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (French: Fédération Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing).

Despite not having strong health, Grand Duke Dimitri was, for most of his life, a very active sportsman, excelling at polo, horse riding, tennis, and bobsledding. His doctors in London and Davos estimated that he first contracted tuberculosis around 1929, which ran a chronic course. He entered the Sanatorium Schatzalp in Davos Switzerland on 2 September 1939, the day after the German invasion of Poland, and remarked in a letter to his sister that he had never before spent a single night in any kind of hospital or medical institution. His health began a steady decline in August 1940.

Raliul Clujului is held in June; the Avram Iancu Rally, held in September, has been officially organised since 1975, though there were several years when it was not held. The latter rally begins in Cipariu Square and runs across the surroundings of the city. Amateur athletes are also active in Cluj- Napoca, with swimming pools, miniature golf courses, tennis courts, paintball arenas and bikeways available, as well as skiing, bobsledding, skating, caving, hiking, hunting, fishing and extreme sports in the vicinity. April 2011 saw the first annual edition of the Cluj International Marathon, a competition that takes place in the city center's streets.

Stephen Colbert's Skate Expectations: Kicking Ice and Taking Donations On the Slippery Slope Down the Icy Path to the Frozen Road Up to Vancouver '010 was a four-part series where Colbert would profile a sport in the 2010 Winter Olympics and try out for the corresponding US team. In each of the segments, skeleton, bobsledding, curling, and speed skating were all profiled. Luge was passed upon, due to it being considered the "gayest sport". The final segment featured the race between Colbert and Olympic skater Shani Davis, which was issued after Davis called Colbert "a jerk" for slamming Canada for not allowing the US speedskating team to practice in their arena.

Jean Prahm (formerly Jean Racine, born September 20, 1978) is an American bobsledder who competed from 1996 to 2006. She won three medals in the two- woman event at the FIBT World Championships with two silvers (2000, 2001) and a bronze (2004). Prahm, then known by her maiden name of Jean Racine, won the Bobsleigh World Cup season title in the two-woman event both in 1999-2000 and 2000-1. Earned the nickname "mean jean" after kicking off her bobsled partner just prior to the 2002 Olympics. Prahm competed in the Olympics twice in the women’s bobsleigh doubles, in 2002 and 2006. In 2002, Prahm competed in women’s bobsledding during its first appearance as an Olympic sport.

The culture of competitive bobsledders (especially before this danger was recognized) also made injured participants hesitant to speak up and request breaks, fearful of being dropped from the team. Bobsledders who train frequently have reported issues such as chronic headaches, a heightened sensitivity to bright lights and loud noises, forgetfulness, a "mental fog", and psychological problems. Repeated mild brain trauma has caused issues for boxers, rugby players, and football players with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and fears have arisen that bobsledding carries a similar danger, at least with the steeper and faster courses used in competitions. A brain scan of one bobsledder revealed damage to the rear and frontal lobes, consistent with micro tears in the brain's white matter.

Kripps entered the sport of bobsledding in 2006 at the age of 19 when he participated in a testing camp. He had competed in athletics at Simon Fraser University where Kripps led the 4 × 100 m team (Justin Kripps, Neal Hurtubise, Rob Drapala, Brett Robinson) to All- American honors and a school record at the 2005 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Louisville, Kentucky (SFU Athletics, 2009 & NAIA 2005). Kripps entered bobsleigh as he saw it as a mix of track and field and race car driving. His initial years in Canada he competed as a brakeman, Kripps won his first Bobsleigh World Cup race in the men's four-man in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, January 2008 alongside Pierre Lueders, Ken Kotyk and David Bissett.

Clifford Barton "Tippi" Gray (January 29, 1892 - April 1968Gray's profile at www.sports-reference.com says that he died on November 9, 1969, but Andy Bull, who wrote Speed Kings, a 2015 book about Gray and the 1932 bobsledding team, cites an obituary for him in April 1968.) was an American bobsledder, songwriter and actor, who competed in the late 1920s and 1930s."Cliff Gray", Sports-reference.com, accessed November 1, 2015 He won two medals at the Winter Olympics, a gold in the four-man event at Lake Placid, New York in 1932 and a gold in the five-man event at St. Moritz, Switzerland, in 1928, as well as a bronze in the four-man event at the 1937 FIBT World Championships in St. Moritz.

He stated that he was not sure how he had managed his 10.05 seconds win, but announced that he would return to Jamaica for a winter training camp to try to improve his consistency for the following season. He missed the 2010 season, including the 2010 Commonwealth Games, due to knee injury and surgery. He returned to Jamaica for rehabilitation but missed the 2011 season after the recurrence of an injury. In addition to sprinting, Williamson has also competed as a push athlete in bobsledding, and was selected as a member of the British team for the 2015 FIBT World Championships where he finished in 14th in the two-man event with Lamin Deen and eighth along with the rest of the British squad in the team event.

The downhill skiing involved professional skiers, and various camera tricks. Some cameras were handheld, with the operators holding them as they were going downhill with the stuntmen, and others were aerial, with cameramen Johnny Jordan – who had previously worked in the helicopter battle of You Only Live Twice — developing a system where he was dangled by an long parachute harness rig below a helicopter, allowing scenes to be shot on the move from any angle. The bobsledding chase was also filmed with the help of Swiss Olympic athletes, and was rewritten to incorporate the accidents the stuntmen suffered during shooting, such as the scene where Bond falls from the sled. Blofeld getting snared with a tree was performed at the studio by Savalas himself, after the attempt to do this by the stuntman on location came out wrong.

Kurti started her sporting career as part of the Hungarian bobsledding team at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, where she and her partner lldikó Strehli placed thirteenth in the two-woman race with a total running time of 1:39.91. Following a disappointing 2002 Olympic campaign where she failed to medal, Kurti turned her focus to the track and field, most specifically in shot put and discus throw. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Kurti qualified for her second Hungarian squad in both the women's shot put and discus throw by registering her best throws of 17.60 and 59.05 respectively from the European Grand Prix in Uzhhorod, Ukraine. In the shot put at Olympia, Kurti faded down her stretch to launch a low, 14.60-metre shot on her first and only attempt that put her into the penultimate spot out of thirty-eight athletes.

While complaining to the President of the Jamaican Olympic Committee, Mr. Barrington Coolidge, and urging him to allow a restart of the race, Derice notices a picture on the wall of Coolidge's office: it is his own father Ben Bannock, who was also a sprinter, standing next to a gold-medal-wearing Caucasian man. Asking Coolidge who the other man in the picture is, he learns that he is Irv Blitzer, an old Olympian friend of Ben who had a plan to recruit sprinters to create a Jamaican bobsled team years ago, and was a two- time American bobsled Gold Medalist at the 1968 Winter Olympics. He finished first in two events again during the 1972 Winter Olympics but was disqualified from the latter for cheating and retired in disgrace to Jamaica, where he leads an impoverished life as a bookie. Intrigued at the idea of getting to the Olympics via bobsledding for Jamaica, Derice leaves Coolidge's office to seek out Blitzer.

The Winter Challenge was started in 1998 by Sweeney's House predecessor, Gerald Solomon, with the declared purpose of showcasing the Olympic facilities at Lake Placid, New York to congressmen and their staffers in hopes of getting federal funds; Sweeney has hosted the annual event since 1999. In January 2006, Sweeney, his wife, and about 60 other people spent a four-day weekend at the facilities, competing against each other in skating, downhill skiing and bobsledding events. The group included Representative Pete Sessions (R-TX), a close friend of Sweeney"Judy Holland, On the Hill, the sound of silence: John Sweeney, still reeling from re-election loss to Kirsten Gillibrand, fails to show for votes" , Albany Times-Union, December 10, 2006 and his wife; and aides to U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY), Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), Representative Randy Kuhl (R-NY), and Representative Bart Stupak (D-MI). The weekend cost the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) $27,500, plus in-kind services it provided and the costs of operating the Olympic venues for the competition (exact figures for the latter two were unavailable).

In 1990, he and his team returned to Cervinia in the second to last World Cup race of the year where they set the track record, putting the team in position to win the Overall World cup, which they accomplished by winning the final race in Calgary and becoming the first non- Europeans to win the Overall World Cup in bobsleigh. Chris Lori also competed on Canada's National Track and Field Team in the decathlon event in 1980 (Jr.), 1983, 1984 and 1985, although he did not qualify for the Olympic games, before fully committing to bobsledding, which he started in October 1984. As a track and field athlete, Lori won silver medal in the pole vault at the Jr. Nationals in 1980 and a silver medal at the Canadian University championships in 1984, and was awarded "All Canadian" honours. Lori later became coach of the American bobsleigh team for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City where the USA four-man teams won Olympic silver and bronze.

Greaves was a finalist in the European and World Championships as a junior, and progressed smoothly into senior ranks in 1997, running a best of 13.82 and winning the AAA title at the end of the year. He was consistently sub-14 in 1998 (best 13.85/13.84w) and represented England in the 110 metres hurdles event, at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 1999 (13.86) when he made his second European Under-23 final after placing 2nd at the AAAs. In 2000 he had an excellent indoor season running four personal bests for 60m hurdles to 7.68 for 5th in his semi-final at the European Indoors. Outdoors he improved his best for 110mh to 13.75, 13.66w and 13.62. He was 3rd at the AAAs, but although he qualified for the second round he was unable to better 14 seconds at the Summer Olympics. After bobsledding during the winter (17th place in World 2-man Championships), Greaves won the 2001 Scottish title in 13.70 and had a season's best 13.68 for 2nd at the AAAs. He was disqualified for two false starts in his heat at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics. In 2002, he was 2nd in the AAA indoor 60m hurdles in 7.75 and went out in his heat at the European Indoors.
