Almost immediately after one of the decade's bleakest moments—the day President Donald Trump issued an executive order barring travelers from several predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States in January 2017—airports across the nation were swarmed by activists, politicians, celebrities, and ordinary people determined to voice their outrage and do whatever they could to support those who had found themselves swiftly detained.

Before Trump's election, anyone who claimed to have been a member of "the resistance" was most likely over the age of 85, a veteran of anti-fascist struggles in France and other Nazi-occupied territories during World War II. That resistance involved armed conflict and personal risk of the bleakest sort, with guerrilla fighters hiding in the catacombs of Paris while Hitler's forces did their worst above ground.

On a surface level, this installment is concerned with some of the bleakest events in the story to date: the discovery of the old-school phone hacker Romero's corpse by his confederate Mobley, the latter's increasing conviction that their group has been marked for death by the fearsome organization the Dark Army, Elliot's desperate attempts to overdose himself out of his Mr. Robot persona's clutches, his garrulous new pal Ray's tragic and violent back story.
