In 1545, after four years of research, Gessner published his remarkable Bibliotheca universalis, an exhaustive catalogue of all known works in Latin, Greek and Hebrew, of all writers who had ever lived, with the titles of their works, and brief annotations. The work, which included his own bio-bibliography, listed some three thousand authors alphabetically, and was the first modern bibliography published since the invention of printing, Through it, Gessner became known as the "father of bibliography." In, all, about twelve thousand titles were included. A second part, a thematic index to the work, Pandectarum sive partitionum universalium libri xxi, appeared in 1548.
The first printing contained a bibliography listing the comic book publishers cited, but fears of lawsuits compelled the publisher to tear the bibliography page from any copies available, so copies with an intact bibliography are rare. Early complete editions of Seduction of the Innocent often sell for high figures among book and comic book collectors. Beginning in 1948, Wertham wrote and spoke widely, arguing about the detrimental effects that comics reading had on young people. Consequently, Seduction of the Innocent serves as a culminating expression of his sentiments about comics and presents augmented examples and arguments, rather than wholly new material.

The bibliography was a collaboration between five Nordic library schools which aimed to present the national bibliographies and essential subject bibliographies of the Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, to an international audience. The general editor was Erland Munch- Petersen of the University of Gothenburg and the work was modelled on A guide to Danish Bibliography, compiled by Munch-Petersen and published by the Royal School of Librarianship, Copenhagen, in 1965.
Although Guy Mannering sold briskly the critical reception was mixed. The Checklist of Fantastic Literature is a bibliography of English science fiction, fantasy and weird books compiled and edited by Everett F. Bleiler with a preface by Melvin Korshak and a cover by Hannes Bok. With a print run of 1,933 copies, it was the first book from Shasta Publishers.
