No Doubt released their self-titled debut album in 1992, a year after being signed to Interscope. The group's blend of upbeat brass-dominated songs and funk-style bass riffs came at a time when most of the United States was in the thrall of grunge music, a genre whose angst-ridden lyrics and dirty sound could not have contrasted more with the atmosphere of most of the songs on No Doubt's pop-oriented album. Not surprisingly, the band lost out to the now- ubiquitous grunge music and the album was a commercial failure, with only 30,000 copies sold.Vineyard, Jennifer.
The book is set in the long hot summer of 1976 in a suburban London street and concerns the occupants of two adjacent houses. In one lives Kate Cooper who struggles with her two young children and the domestic chores whilst keeping up appearances for her high-flying husband who works as a eurocrat in Brussels, spending little time at home. In the other lives Sam Green is struggling to write a novel whilst his wife goes out to work running a psychiatric practice and his angst-ridden teenage daughter binge eats in her bedroom. Kate and Sam are drawn together whilst their families are seemingly unaware...
Melissa Whitworth of The Daily Telegraph described McCaig's Butler as "touchy-feely". In The New York Times, Stephen Carter noted that the character of Rhett Butler was made into a more human, flawed person than either Mitchell or Ripley portrayed him to be. However, he stated that the novel transformed Rhett from the man of mystery that drew readers to him into "a version of the angst-ridden, on-the-make, love-struck antihero of modern fiction: Rhett Butler as channeled by Rabbit Angstrom [of Rabbit, Run] or T. S. Garp [of The World According to Garp]." He then wondered if such a Rhett was one wanted by readers.
Born in , Andrew Johnson grew up with a single mother, mowing lawns and bagging groceries at a Lunds at 50th & France in Edina, Minnesota. During his teens, Johnson was diagnosed with depression. Between 2002 and 2003, he ran two websites that the Star Tribune described as "paint[ing] a picture of an angst-ridden, depressed teen experimenting with drugs and relationships as he seeks his place in the world." Johnson acknowledged the sites as coming from a time in his life during which he was "struggling, calling out for help", a period that ended, along with his depression, once he got a job after high school at Geek Squad.
Although the arrangements were Riddle's, there was no need for a conductor, so pianist Bill Miller managed from his instrument. Set against his then-current relationship troubles, Sinatra set out to record "angst-ridden" songs involving lost love. Sinatra was very tense during the recording of the album, reportedly breaking down and crying after the master take of "When Your Lover Has Gone". Rita Kirwan of Music magazine witnessed one of the sessions, and her account goes thus: Nelson Riddle commented on Sinatra's work ethic and its effect on Riddle's arrangements and the studio orchestra: Sinatra was meticulous about the quality of the sessions for In the Wee Small Hours.
He wrote the novels Modern Ranch Living and Goats as well as the short story collections Unsung Heroes of American Industry and Naked Pueblo. He served as the editor of the book The Worst Years of Your Life: Stories for the Geeked-Out, Angst-Ridden, Lust-Addled, and Deeply Misunderstood Adolescent in All of Us, including short pieces by George Saunders, Jennifer Egan, A. M. Homes and Nathan Englander. In 2015, Scribner published Intro to Alien Invasion, a satirical graphic novel he co-wrote with Owen King. At one time, Poirier was named "the young American writer to watch" by the Times Literary Supplement.
Hepzibah relocates with the X-Men to San Francisco. She is shown infuriated at a telephone machine while on a long-distance call to Warpath (who is in Archangel's ranch in Colorado) as she can't hear him, but the reality is that an angst-ridden Warpath is just remaining silent because even though he still wants to speak to her, he is overcome with guilt and shame for all the killing he has done in the name of mutant survival as a member of Wolverine's version of X-Force.X-Force #7 She has been seen in the background of Utopia, having gone to the Island with the X-Men.
Alonge briefly explained the lyrical themes of each song on the album in a post on his official Facebook page. Jokingly, he stated that the song "Pit Warrior" addressed the issue of people "having no spatial awareness at shows", adding that the song sounded like Four Year Strong's material. The fifth song on the album, "Rylo Ken", is an acoustic track which, lyrically, incorporates references to the character of "Kylo Ren", an antagonist from the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, into the angst-ridden, rebellious lyrics of many pop punk songs. Alonge has expressed on multiple occasions that he is an avid fan of the Star Wars series.
The film was written by Jacob Brackman, from a story by Rafelson and Brackman, and starred Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern, Ellen Burstyn, Julia Anne Robinson, Scatman Crothers and Charles Lavine. The title refers to the original Atlantic City version of the Monopoly game board, where the misspelled and misplaced "Marvin Gardens" was one of the Yellow squares in the children's game of capitalistic success. In the film, Nicholson plays David Staebler, a melancholy Philadelphia disk jockey who tells long, angst ridden stories of his childhood over the radio and lives with his elderly Grandfather (Lavine). David receives a call from his extroverted con artist brother Jason (Dern) asking him to bail him out of jail in Atlantic City.
After being fired from the soap opera Days to Remember, down on his luck, eccentric, self-centered actor Simon Ferguson (Tim Curry) moves into Manhattan's Metropolitan Hotel, which is run by ex-wife Hadley Martin (Annie Potts), whom he was married to 20 years prior... for twelve days. Despite her initial exasperation with her ex, Hadley again succumbs to the "Ferguson charm", as do all of those around her. Simon reluctantly plays role model to Hadley's children from a different marriage: precocious -year- old Daniel (Luke Tarsitano) and angst-ridden teen Gwen (Marla Sokoloff). The hotel's psychotic Greek chef, Yorgo Galfanikos (Steve Carell), also looks up to Simon, having been a fan of his soap opera and films.
In 1987, the band attempted a return to their usual style with Surveillance. While Gil Moore and Mike Levine remained firmly planted in blues-rock, Rik Emmett took a more modern progressive turn, even involving Dixie Dregs and Kansas guitarist Steve Morse. They collaborated on a dual- guitar solo for Gil Moore's angst-ridden vocal on the Emmett-penned "Headed for Nowhere". The first single released to radio stations in Canada was "Let the Light Shine On Me", which did well on certain Canadian rock stations, such as reaching number 1 at Q107 in Toronto (as the lead one or two singles on most Triumph albums since 1979 had) while reaching No. 61 on the Canadian singles chart.
In interviews Friedman has described the book as the story of "sex, drugs, and SATs," including "a live monkey, a dead friend..., a national scandal, a diet disaster, and all the rest of that fantastic awkwardness that makes our teenage years so deliciously angst- ridden." She has indicated on several occasions that she wrote it to provide honest information about real-world problems facing teenagers everywhere, the kind of information that she says she wishes had been available to her when she was in high school. Friedman's book has been well received, with an average customer rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon.com. Further, the book was reviewed very positively on Salon.
Kate Elizabeth Winslet (born 5 October 1975) is an English actress. She is particularly known for her work in period dramas, and often portrays angst- ridden women. Winslet is the recipient of various accolades, including three British Academy Film Awards, and is among the few performers to have won Academy, Emmy, and Grammy Awards. Born in Reading, Berkshire, Winslet studied drama at the Redroofs Theatre School. Her first screen appearance, at the age of 15, was in the British television series Dark Season (1991). She made her film debut playing a teenage murderess in Heavenly Creatures (1994), and received her first BAFTA Award for playing Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility (1995).
The song is a prominent hardcore hip-hop track for its angst- ridden lyrics and hostile, aggressive delivery by Eminem. It features the first beat Eminem produced on his own, featuring an ominous bass line, a piano loop, and bell chimes. In the song, Eminem lashes out at people he feels are putting too much pressure on him, including overzealous fans and record executives expecting him to top the success of his hit single "My Name Is", though in fact he went on to do so with "The Real Slim Shady," as well as other songs. He delivers each line extremely aggressively, almost shouting them out, representing the angry, resentful tone taken by the lyrics.
Before the film began shooting, Allan Eastman described it as "a comedy of sexual values and identities" and "a study of a Toronto subculture". Stephen Chesley pointed out that this was "one of the few times an audience is presented with an examination of young people's mating habits that is made by young people, rather than someone middle-aged who's trying to remember." Several years after its release, the film was described as a parody of "the great Canadian loser", an "angst-ridden boy drinking himself to death, isolated against the wilderness." The film also incorporated a critique of the Canadian film establishment in the form of a Canadian spoof film-within-a-film.
"Loud Like Love" was met with generally mixed reviews from music critics. The album holds an approval rating of 55/100 at Metacritic, which indicates a mixed or average reception. Alternative Press' Mischa Pearlman wrote that "too much of this album comes off like self-parody, meaning it's a far cry from the pulverizing of their best work". AllMusic wrote that "many of these songs play like less-alienated, if no less paranoid, OK Computer-era Radiohead cuts", adding that "however, the songs here are still laden with Molko's high-pitched vocals, which he characteristically uses to play the eternally angst-ridden and alienated teenager -- something the band's fans will surely appreciate", giving the album 3.5 stars out of 5.
Blues & Soul said that "Marry You" is the second part of Just The Way You Are', similarly the "euphoria gets deployed", there is simplicity on the song which culminate in "the perfect platform for Mars' angst ridden yearning vocals to ride over the top complete with church bells." In a mixed review, Tim Sendra of Allmusic praised the song's "dynamic and nuanced production", yet founding the track "pleasantly silly". In a negative review, Mike Diver of BBC Music thought confessed that the recording was a "too-clingy and very creepy love song" and noted its lack of inspiration. Similarly, Slant Magazine's Eric Henderson suggested that the song was spun off of Cee Lo Green's "Fuck You", where the word "fuck" was changed to "marry".
Jeyamohan had been an avid reader of the Mahabharatha, the quintessential epic of India. In his childhood he had been fascinated by the Kathakali renderings of Mahabharatha stories, their expressive portrayals of characters like Duryodhan and the angst-ridden life of Karna making a deep impression on him. Far from being a simple tale of 'good vs evil', Mahabharatha opened up for him as a true classic with multi-dimensional characters, drama, emotion, and a deep meditation on truth, philosophy, ideals, fate and the universe itself. As he grew up and traveled the length and breadth of India, Jeyamohan saw and read the various adaptations of the Mahabharatha and its universal influence on the culture and language of India across all regions and languages.
AllMusic awarded Language of Silence four and a half out of five stars, commending the ominous atmosphere and saying the "synth sounds have been sharpened without losing any of their viciousness, while melodies have matured, forming a new blend that allows the complexities to show through in a way they have not in previous Numb releases." Alternative Press gave the album a positive review, saying "dancefloor consciousness abounds on Language" and that "Numb have cultivated their own affection for noise." Michael Mahan of CMJ praised Language of Silence, calling it a "sonically intimidating" album "with mountains of guitar feedback, waves of synthesized chaos and a lion's share of aggressive, angst- ridden vocal terrorism." Ink 19 called the album a masterpiece without shortcomings.
Next in this series of his based on the urban middle class, came his satire on the Indian judicial system, Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho! (1984), an old couple which struggles for years in their legal case that runs for years under a corrupt judiciary, in nexus with real-estate developer. Set in the urban ‘middle class’, his film chronicled their struggles and search of identity in a rapidly changing landscape and economic conditions. Then finally in his angst- ridden movies came, Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro (1989), starring Pawan Malhotra, an archetypal Muslim youth caught in the circle of crime and recrimination, and their collective state amidst growing communalism, ghetto mentality, and a search for an ethnic identity which does not clash with a national identity.
"Compulsion on the Range" is a satire that blends Westerns and Freudian pop psychology. In the 1950s, a trend of "adult" Westerns appeared in which characters were given psychological backgrounds to explain their motivations, as in The Left Handed Gun, in which an angst-ridden Billy the Kid gets his revenge after losing his father figure. In "Compulsion", a psychologist tries to work out why Marshall Matt Dolin (a parody of James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon from the popular Gunsmoke TV show) insists on trying to outshoot Johnny Ringding, chasing him across the West. "Compulsion" was the third story in the book, but the first to be drawn, and was Kurtzman's least favorite, as he thought he had yet to perfect the style he had developed for the book.
The Triple Concerto is structured in three sections or movements: # Con moto # Lento # Presto Smirnov scored the work for the three solo instruments, and an orchestra consisting of piccolo, cor anglais, bass clarinet, percussion (3–4 players of timpani, triangle, suspended cymbal, maracas, woodblock, bongos, tom-tom, gongs, tam-tam, side drum, bass drum, glockenspiel, xylophone, bells), and strings. The concerto takes about 25 minutes to perform. The first movement has been described by a reviewer as "music meant to wound", the second movement as "unsettling and angst-ridden", and the third movement was compared to a Hitchcock film track. The three solo instruments complement each other, comparable to the voice types soprano for the violin, mezzo-soprano for the harp, and basso profundo for the double bass.
Ruth in Hollyoaks was also known as a rather loud mouthed character, evidence of this is seen in an episode where while she is talking Lucy Benson's hand covers her mouth in order to gag her but Ruth continues to try and talk but just makes muffled sounds under Lucy's hand. The Daily Record commented negatively on Ruth's relationship with Kurt saying that the pair needed a "mallet on the head" after their marriage breakdown. They added that "Ruth is still doing the angst-ridden facial expression in Hollyoaks this week as she and hubby Kurt are nowhere nearer sorting out their relationship" and later said Kurt "is still pleading for a reconciliation with Ruth". Ruth and flatmate Jasmine Bates sleep together after spending the night sharing a bottle of wine.
Within and Without received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 70, based on 34 reviews. Kevin Liedel of Slant Magazine praised its juxtaposition of "warm, decades-old retrograde styles with the despondent, isolated, and decidedly modern mood of [Ernest] Greene's alienated narratives ... Melodies and instrumentation are infused with sunny, tender basslines and mellow synths that harken back to soft, '70s-era R&B; rhythms, electrified '80s pop, and synth-heavy shoegaze, while Greene's muffled vocals and haunting atmospherics provide angst-ridden counterpoints." Brandon Soderberg of Pitchfork noted the album's improved production values compared to Greene's previous output, and called it a "declaration to snarky ironists that there is nothing to be ashamed of" about the chillwave genre.
Teen films came into their own during the decade, beginning with The Wild One, starring Marlon Brando as an outlaw biker. MGM's Blackboard Jungle (1955) examined race and class dynamics in an inner-city high school, and is regarded by some as the spark that lit the Rock and Roll revolution by featuring Bill Haley & His Comets' Rock Around the Clock over the opening credits. Screenings of the film occasionally led to teen violence and vandalism, and, for some, the film marks the start of visible teen rebellion in the 20th century. Rebel Without a Cause (1955) thrust its angst-ridden star James Dean to international stardom, and, unlike Blackboard Jungle, told its story from the viewpoint of its teen characters, another James Dean film East of Eden (1955) showcased his extraordinary talent as an actor.
" Bruce Timm and Paul Dini intended to use the original Supergirl, Kara Zor-El, but were denied by DC Comics, due to DC's then-present edict that Superman was to remain the only surviving Kryptonian."We wanted a take on her that was not the current version, (where she was) some sort of alien who is combined with a human girl and is all confused and angst-ridden, and we didn’t want to do the blob of protoplasm that takes the shape of Supergirl’s form. We wanted to do the original version, which is Superman’s cousin from Krypton. We ran into a wall with DC because they insisted that Superman be the last Kryptonian. So we did a compromise: she’s from a small planet in the neighboring system that was colonized by Kryptonians, but they’ve evolved slightly differently.
The Glasgow Herald in 2014, at the time of her Generations show, Flannigan discussed drawing inspiration from the work of surrealist sculptor Alberto Giacometti. His work Femme égorgée (Woman With Her Throat Cut) "fed its way into her subconscious". She has also drawn inspiration from the 1979 art film, Stalker, directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, and from Masaccio's masterly 15th- century fresco, Expulsion From The Garden Of Eden in the Brancacci Chapel, Florence, which she visited as part of her residency in Rome. While Giacometti's 1932 bronze, is "a worrying human-insect hybrid, a splayed, disembowelled figure part praying mantis, part crime victim, Flannigan turns up the volume of Giacometti's angst-ridden attitude to the female form; her own painted figures echo his sculpture's splayed structure, but are defiantly, terrifyingly alive with their blood red lips and stiletto heels".
For years, he used politically charged décimas as means to educate the people about identity and the struggle at hand. Que se vayan del Canal (I wish they would just leave from the Canal) and Quiero Sembrar un Maíz (I want to plant corn in the Canal Zone) were the songs of the protests against the constant abuse by the United States. His clear and direct writing form serves as a tool for the constant struggles and protests that were taking place in Ibero-America during the 1970s and 1980s. The décima, having a bard-like effect as an artistic expression and Changmarín having mastered the form, managed to merge it with the social angst-ridden echoes of the dispossessed and the nationalist feelings of the people to "incense a protest in each fist and a march in each step".
Calman's trademark character was the angst-ridden "little man", who strongly reflected Calman's own lifelong depressions (in Who's Who he listed his recreations as "brooding and worrying"). Topics focused on the little man's anxieties about health, death, God, achievement, morality and women, a style of humour that his Times obituary described as "of the black, self-deprecating Jewish variety, in the style of his New York heroes, James Thurber, S. J. Perelman and Woody Allen".Mel Calman - Obituary, The Times, London, February 12, 1994 A small- format single-frame "pocket cartoon", the little man series used hand-lettered text in soft pencil and minimalist detail, a technique he had evolved due to early weaknesses in draughtsmanship. Calman is commemorated by a historic plaque on his former residence at 64 Linthorpe Road, Hackney; where he lived from 1931 until 1957.
Badal Sircar (15 July 1925 – 13 May 2011), also known as Badal Sarkar, was an influential Indian dramatist and theatre director, most known for his anti- establishment plays during the Naxalite movement in the 1970s and taking theatre out of the proscenium and into public arena, when he transformed his own theatre company, Shatabdi (established in 1967 for proscenium theatre ) as a third theatre group . He wrote more than fifty plays of which Ebong Indrajit, Basi Khabar, and Saari Raat are well known literary pieces. A pioneering figure in street theatre as well as in experimental and contemporary Bengali theatre with his egalitarian "Third Theatre", he prolifically wrote scripts for his Aanganmanch (courtyard stage) performances, and remains one of the most translated Indian playwrights. Though his early comedies were popular, it was his angst-ridden Ebong Indrajit (And Indrajit) that became a landmark play in Indian theatre.
Dennis Schwartz from Ozus' World Movie Reviews stated that the "...film lives through the superb raw angst-ridden performance of [lead] Phil Daniels"; Schwartz gave the movie a B+. Critic Cole Smithey from ColeSmithey.com called the film a "...glorious representational story of male teen angst that transcends its British locations and great music with a sense of the confused romantic notions that young men the world over carry with them"; Smithey gave the film an A+. Reviewer Ken Hanke from the Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC) called it a "[d]isappointing film version of a great concept album"; he gave the film a 3/5 score. Film critic Jeffrey M. Anderson from Combustible Celluloid states that where the film "...succeeds[, it does so] through its devil-may-care attitude and energy"; on the other hand, Anderson states that the film "...feels like a low-budget homemade movie from the period." Rotten Tomatoes collected reviews from 11 critics and gave Quadrophenia a 100% rating.
" Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV said that A Death in the Gunj is "a sensitive, profoundly moving portrait of an angst-ridden young man derailed by a world bereft of empathy." The critic gave the film a rating of 4 out of 5 and concluded his review by saying that, "A Death In The Gunj is a chiselled gem of a film – as resplendent as it is sobering." Rajeev Masand gave the film a rating of 4 out of 5 and said that, "A Death in the Gunj benefits from Konkona Sen Sharma’s perceptive, assured direction. It’s one of the best films of the year, and one that you’ll find hard to shake off in a hurry." Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express gave the film a rating of 3.5 out of 5 saying that, "Konkona Sensharma’s assured directorial debut, unpacks a complex sentiment with feeling, and gives us a layered film with memorable characters about the games people play, and how, sometimes, that can have terrible consequences.
Industrial dance is a North American alternative term for electronic body music, which is also used for electro-industrial music as well. Fans associated with this music scene call themselves rivetheads. In general, "industrial dance" is characterized by its "electronic beats, symphonic keyboard lines, pile-driver rhythms, angst-ridden or sampled vocals, and cyberpunk imagery". Since the mid-1980s, the term "industrial dance" has been used to describe the music of Cabaret Voltaire (early 1980s),Holly George-Warren / Patricia Romanowski / Jon Pareles: The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll, p. 140, Fireside, 2001, early Die Krupps,David Nobahkt: Suicide: No Compromise, p. 166, SAF Publishing Ltd., 2004, Portion Control,The Wire, Volume 269-274, p. 32, C. Another typical design flaw: in this example, the decision to create another 45-degree wall just for the main entrance led to an awkward layout even of the roof McMansions often mix a variety of architectural styles and elements, combining quoins, steeply sloped roofs, multiple roof lines, complicated massing and pronounced dormers, all producing what some consider an unpleasant jumbled appearance. The builder may have attempted to achieve expensive effects with cheap materials, skimped on details, or hidden defects with cladding: :Though construction quality may be subpar and materials shoddy (from faux stucco to styrofoam crown molding and travertine compounded from epoxied marble dust), McMansion buyers are eager; the real-estate writer locates them in the generation of my angst-ridden Boston University students: "mostly young, mobile, career-oriented, high- salaried 30- and 40-something individuals" who are too time-squeezed to hire an architect but seek "a luxury home" that they might soon (and easily) sell whenever "it's time to move on." Frequently, priority in McMansions construction is given to the interior layout. It has been claimed that this causes the exterior appearance to suffer from an "amorphous" or "bloated" quality.
