"The Audacity of Hope" (2006) was rather less soaring, but it was a medium for Mr Obama to discuss education, poverty, war and healthcare, while adumbrating his larger political philosophies.

Starting in 1972 Beck spent twelve years teaching Comparative Literature, German, and Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin, becoming an associate professor in 1977 and promoted to a full professorship in 1982. Her study of Kafka for her doctorate had led her to a deepening interest in Jewish literary and cultural heritage more generally. Adumbrating later trends, in 1972 she founded a section for Yiddish in the Modern Language Association, then as now the principal professional association in the United States for scholars of language and literature. She introduced Jewish topics and writers, such as Sholem Aleichem, to her teaching program.

Adumbrating her subsequent academic career, her prize-winning dissertation was entitled "Liebe der Frauen – über das Verhältnis von Weiblichkeit und Misshandlung" (loosely "Love of women - on the relationship of the female condition and abuse"). She also trained to become group analyst and supervisor (" Gruppenanalytikerin und Supervisorin"), terms which even she has subsequently struggled to translate into English. It was again at Frankfurt University that in 2000 she received her habilitation (higher academic qualification), also receiving "Venia legendi" (loosely: "teaching rights") in Sociology. She has continued to teach and support sociology students at the Hochschule in Frankfurt up to and beyond her retirement in 2012.

In 1918, he produced his proposal for the "Auf der Heese" residential development in Celle's Carstens Street (Carstensstraße). This referenced back to existing plans from before the war, as a watercolour drawing by his former partner Karl Dreher, who had been killed in 1916, demonstrates. Each of the 32 terraced houses featured a saddleback roof and a kitchen/living area, adumbrating mainstream features of "modern" twentieth century housing. For detached buildings, such as the school (originally drawn by Haesler in 1911, and today used as a day centre and meeting space), in the village of Bannetze, he had invoked a more traditional repertoire, specifying an interrupted-hipped roof (Krüppelwalmdach).

Homo Faber (1957) was Frisch's top selling novel, with four million copies produced in German alone by 1998. By 1947 Frisch had accumulated roughly 130 filled notebooks, and these were published in a compilation titled Tagebuch mit Marion (Diary with Marion). In reality what appeared was not so much a diary as cross between a series of essays and literary autobiography. He was encouraged by the publisher Peter Suhrkamp to develop the format, and Suhrkamp provided his own feedback and specific suggestions for improvements. In 1950 Suhrkamp's own newly established publishing house produced a second volume of Frisch's Tagebuch covering the period 1946–1949, comprising a mosaic of travelogues, autobiographical musings, essays on political and literary theory and literary sketches, adumbrating many of the themes and sub-currents of his later fictional works.

Each of the side-staircases had two wcs positioned beside them, while the in pride of place, positioned by the new main staircase, there was now a lift (elevator), adumbrating a trend that would become mainstream in European luxury hotels after 1900. The hotel manager's own office was positioned to the right of the main entrance on the hotel's western face, mirroring the position of the guests' writing room to the left of the entrance. In anticipation of intensive footfall, the entire vestibule was given a tiled floor (today covered over with a carpet) using the "Mettlacher Platten" (Mettlach process tiles) developed by (1782-1858) and supplied by Villeroy & Boch. To the left of the vestibule, the front half of the new northern wing was, on the ground floor, entirely occupied by a large hall-lounge.

Within these new events change can occur gradually or quickly. Kubler examines the temperaments of artists and how temperament influences their work. Some artists work within the current tradition, finding new ways to progress its development into uncharted territories. This artist is able to perceive what others have not and expands upon the current environment. "Sometimes the map seems finished: nothing more can be added; the class of forms looks closed until another patient man takes a challenge from the seemingly complete situation, and succeeds once more in enlarging it" (88). Kubler juxtaposes these artists with a different type of artist that he refers to as the "versatile men" (88). He describes how the entrance of the versatile artist occurred during an historical time of "social and technical renovation" (88). These "fast happening" artists push the artistic tradition far into the future; these prolific artists are "adumbrating another new series before the one in which they are engaged has been played out" (89).
