In November 1989 the Armenian Academy of Sciences, led by Ambartsumian, issued a statement protesting the decision of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union to return Nagorno-Karabakh to the direct jurisdiction of Soviet Azerbaijan. In September 1990 Ambartsumian and four other Armenians, including writer Zori Balayan and actor Sos Sargsyan, went on a hunger strike at the Hotel Moskva in Moscow to protest the military rule over Nagorno-Karabakh declared by Mikhail Gorbachev. Ambartsumian celebrated his 82nd birthday hunger striking. He insisted that Gorbachev had violated the Soviet constitution by keeping Nagorno-Karabakh under direct rule from Moscow.

The western part of the peninsula is covered by two mountain ranges: the Khibiny Mountains and the Lovozero Massif; the former contains the highest point of the peninsula—Mount Chasnachorr, the height of which is . The Keyvy drainage divide lies in the central part. The mountainous reliefs of the Murman and Kandalaksha Coasts stretch from southeast to northwest, mirroring the peninsula's main orographic features. Administratively, the territory of the peninsula consists of Lovozersky and Tersky Districts, parts of Kandalakshsky and Kolsky Districts, as well as the territories subordinated to the cities and towns of Murmansk, Ostrovnoy, Severomorsk, Kirovsk, and parts of the territories subordinated to Apatity, Olenegorsk, and Polyarnye Zori.

"Ne zori, zoro" (Macedonian Cyrillic: Не зори, зоро; English translation: "Dawn, do not rise") was Macedonian Participating member of EBU entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1998, performed in Macedonian by Vlado Janevski. This was Macedonia's first Eurovision entry as an independent state (it had previously competed as part of Yugoslavia) and the first occasion on which the Macedonian language had been heard at the contest. It was also the last song that was sung with an orchestra arrangement in the contest's history. The song is a love ballad, with Janevski pleading with his mother (according to an old Macedonian tradition) to go and ask the hand of the girl he loves from her parents.

Zasheyek () is a rural locality (an inhabited locality) in administrative jurisdiction of Polyarnye Zori Town with Jurisdictional Territory in Murmansk Oblast, Russia, located beyond the Arctic Circle on the Kola Peninsula at a height of above sea level. Population: 901 (2010 Census). Zasheyek was classified as an urban locality by the All-Russian Central Executive Committee (VTsIK) Resolution of August 20, 1935, when it was granted work settlement status.Administrative-Territorial Division of Murmansk Oblast, p. 49–51 However, after the resolution had been published, it was pointed out that Zasheyek is simultaneously listed in Kirovsky District of Murmansk Okrug and in the Karelian ASSR, thus once again bringing attention to the issue with the border between the okrug and the Karelian ASSR.

The space that now extends from the InterContinental hotel and National Theatre once was home to an outdoor circus, around which existed shops with mititei (small Romanian sausages) and beer, and a stum shop (?) named Zori de zi. All this disappeared after urban planning in the 1960s proposed the idea of developing the area through tourism, cultural or administrative functions.
