The species was first formally described by botanist Ferdinand von Mueller, his description published in Flora Australiensis in 1870. Mueller had previously published the name in 1861, but without a formal description, in the Annual Report of the Government Botanist and Director of the Botanic and Zoologic Garden for 1860. The specific epithet honours Sir Henry Barkly who was Governor of Victoria between 1856 and 1863. In 1986 the New South Wales populations previously included in this species were placed in a new subspecies G. barklyana subsp.

During 1973, Jean-Pierre filmed a documentary named Pygmies that is one of the few movies that documents the customs of this disappearing culture. It was released simultaneously with the book Pygmy Kitabu. Filmed during 1972 on location, the movie was originally titled "Pygmies—- An Epic of the Golden Age" and previewed at the Academy Award Theater in Los Angeles. However, the movie was rejected by major distributors for lack of commercial appeal and was limited to a small run by a local theater circuit in San Francisco, California (sponsored by the California Academy of Sciences and the San Francisco Zoologic Society).

Amongst discussions in terms of content, a controversy about methodological issues of data provision, field-research and scientific handling of sources was provoked. In the course of the exchange, Moritz von Leonhardi had brought ethnographic, zoologic and botanic objects to Europe and gave them to several museums, especially the Museum for Ethnology in Frankfurt am Main (today the Museum of World Cultures) as well as the Senckenberg Research Institute. Numerous Australian plants have been sown for the first time in Europe in a specially built green house in Groß Karben, the grown plants are brought to their destination at the Research Institute Senckenberg in Frankfurt.

The process of collecting specimens included: killing, measuring, photographing, skinning, de-boning, preserving, and packing them for shipment back to Chicago. In 1905, Marshall Field funded Akeley’s next trip to Africa which lasted twelve months and brought back two bull elephants which he would later mount for display. Akeley took nearly 1,000 glass plate photos and collected 17 tons of material including: 400 mammal skins, 1200 small mammal skins, 800 bird skins, and a fair number of bird and mammal skeletons. In addition to zoologic material he also collected more than 900 anthropological specimens and crates of leaves that he would use as models for his dioramas.

Smith also edited and directed the design of the Anthology. He created the liner notes himself, and these notes are almost as famous as the music, using an unusual fragmented, collage method that presaged some postmodern artwork. Smith also penned short synopses of the songs in the collection, which read like newspaper headlines—for the song "King Kong Kitchie Kitchie Ki-Me-O" by Chubby Parker, a song about a mouse marrying a frog, Smith notes: "Zoologic Miscegeny Achieved Mouse Frog nuptials, Relatives Approve." For example, for Chubby Parker's rendition of "King Kong Kitchie Kitchie Ki-Me-O" ("Frog Went A-Courting"), a ballad that has been traced to 1548, Smith wrote: "Zoologic Miscegeny Achieved Mouse Frog Nuptuals , Relatives Approve." Smith was also unique in associating folk music with the occult: the design he chose to be printed on the box covers, for example, was taken from an engraving by Theodore de Bry of a great hand tuning the Celestial Monochord (the one- stringed instrument symbolizing the music of the spheres), that had illustrated a sixteenth-century treatise on music by the Elizabethan magus Robert Fludd.So successful was Smith's mediation strategy in presenting these 1920s country artists as uncanny voices from the beyond – "the old, weird America", in Greil Marcus's memorable phrase – that the 1960s folk revivalists were astonished to find that many of these artists from forty years earlier were still very much alive. "What was then called "old timey" music ... at the time was about as far in the past as the Beatles are today," Peter Stampfel has observed.
