Jack Polo is a gherkin importer who is haunted by a minor demon called the Yattering. The demon is commanded to haunt Jack by Beelzebub, because one of Jack's ancestors reneged on a pact made with the demon lord. The Yattering is frustrated when its determined efforts to drive Jack insane are answered with good cheer and apparent obliviousness. Unknown to the Yattering, Jack is purposely ignoring the demon in order to simultaneously frustrate it and maintain his own sanity.

The Yattering subjects him to increasingly severe torments, including killing his cats and terrorising his family, but these efforts all fail. Eventually Jack tricks the Yattering into violating its orders, allowing Jack to take advantage of a loophole and make the Yattering his slave. Unusual for Barker's early work, this story is unabashedly comic. It was made into an episode of the horror anthology TV series Tales from the Darkside (Season 4 - 1987/88, episode 7; broadcast Nov 8, 1987) with Barker writing the screenplay from his own story.

Recognition in Europe led bands such as Devilyn to get signed to Listenable Records, Yattering a recording deal with Season of Mist for their second release, and Prophecy signed to Koch International. After losing popularity Prophecy went on hiatus in 1999, and reformed in 2004, but eventually split-up in 2010, while Devilyn, and Yattering disbanded in 2006. Hate after several underground albums reached international recognition in the 2000s after signing to Listenable Records, and later Napalm Records, Dies Irae, reformed in 2000 consisting of members of Vader signed to Metal Blade Records, and released three albums, until the death of their drummer. In late 1990s Decapitated was signed to Wicked World a subsidiary of Earache Records.

In 2002 the band became supported by Apocalypse Prod., which resulted on Tehace's shows on Winter Crusade Tour 2002 and Yattering`s Genocide Tour in 2003. During 2003-2005 the band was composing material on their debut full-length album. Period from April to November 2005 was spent on recording Zipped Noise From Hell.

Significant 2000s artists: Myslovitz, Kult, Hey, Dżem, Wilki, Cool Kids of Death, Coma, Lao Che, Pogodno, Ścianka, Vader, Behemoth, Voo Voo, Lech Janerka, Strachy na Lachy, Krzysztof Wałecki ( solo and with Vintage), Darek Pietrzak, Acid Drinkers and Riverside. Poland has a very active underground extreme metal Music Scene. Some of the bands that have heralded and helped the cause are Vader, Behemoth, Yattering, Decapitated and Lux Occulta. This has paved ground for a large underground movement.

Barker published his Razorline imprint via Marvel Comics in 1993. Barker horror adaptations and spin-offs in comics include the Marvel/Epic Comics series Hellraiser, Nightbreed, Pinhead, The Harrowers, Book of the Damned, and Jihad; Eclipse Books' series and graphic novels Tapping The Vein, Dread, Son of Celluloid, Revelations The Life of Death, Rawhead Rex and The Yattering and Jack, and Dark Horse Comics' Primal, among others. Barker served as a consultant and wrote issues of the Hellraiser anthology comic book. In 2005, IDW published a three-issue adaptation of Barker's children's fantasy novel The Thief of Always, written and painted by Kris Oprisko and Gabriel Hernandez.

Vader became the only one to remain active since its formation, and reached international fan base, with albums charting in Poland, Germany, and Japan, on labels such as Earache Records, Metal Blade Records, and Nuclear Blast among others. While Trauma also remained active since its formation they never reached the same recognition. Since the late 2000s several of the "classic" bands such as Magnus, Armagedon, and Merciless Death have been reformed, and have since remained active. In the 1990s a second wave of death metal was developed with bands such as Violent Dirge, Lost Soul, Hazael, Hate, Pandemonium (all founded in 1990), Cerebral Concussion later renamed Devilyn, Prophecy, Dies Irae (all founded in 1992), Sceptic (founded in 1994), Decapitated, and Yattering (both founded in 1996).

Several of the stories have been adapted into films, "Rawhead Rex" (1986); "The Forbidden" (filmed in 1992 as Candyman); "The Last Illusion" (filmed in 1995 as Lord of Illusions); "The Body Politic" (filmed in 1997 in the anthology Quicksilver Highway); "The Midnight Meat Train", filmed in 2008; "The Book of Blood" and "On Jerusalem Street (a postscript)" (combined and filmed in 2007 as Book of Blood), and "Dread", filmed in 2009. "The Yattering and Jack" was adapted by Barker himself in 1986 for the US series Tales from the Darkside. In 2020, a new feature film also titled Books of Blood was announced and it was released on Hulu on October 7, with Brannon Braga directing and executive produced by Seth MacFarlane.

In 1987, he portrayed "Sir Nigel Pennyweight" in the cult horror film Ghoulies II. In the same year, he appeared as "Greaser Greg" in The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, a theatrical adaptation of the popular trading cards series, performing the character in a costume while voice actor Jim Cummings provided the voice, and he played the Devil's diminutive minion in The Yattering and Jack episode of Tales from the Darkside. In 1988's Willow, he appeared alongside Warwick Davis, one of his Star Wars co-stars. Other prominent roles of Fondacaro's include "Hooded Dwarf" in Phantasm II, Cousin Itt in Addams Family Reunion, the villain's butler in Blood Dolls, the female vampire's "master" in the horror comedy Bordello of Blood, a shady con man in Land of the Dead, a vampire hunter in Decadent Evil, and a dramatic turn as a dwarf with an average-sized son in "A Clown's Prayer", an episode of Touched by an Angel. He also played a dwarf with an average-sized daughter in the CSI episode, "A Little Murder".
