The line-up of site-specific installations, commissions, and screenings for this wildly ambitious festival definitely exceeds my word count for this piece, but it includes a vodou flag installation by Haitian artist Myrlande Constant, two massive Buddha sculptures by Chinese artist Zhang Huan, and a series of "mobile video installations" on an LED billboard boat traveling across the Miami Beach waterways from noon through 6pm, among many other artworks and projects.

If I were to lay out the whole "Transformers" mythos here, I'd exhaust my word count, so: The Autobot B-127 gets shot off to the Northern California of 1987; the fireball in which he descends makes a bit of a latter-day Captain Ahab out of an Army dude played by John Cena; and a Decepticon pursuing B-127 rips out the good guy's robot voice box and pounds him until he loses his memory, and his sense of purpose.

But it is a vote for a man who stands well outside the norms of American presidential politics, who has displayed a naked contempt for republican institutions and constitutional constraints, who deliberately injects noxious conspiracy theories into political conversation, who has tiptoed closer to the incitement of political violence than any major politician in my lifetime, whose admiration for authoritarian rulers is longstanding, who has endorsed war crimes and indulged racists and so on down a list that would exhaust this column's word count if I continued to compile it.

What I liked about this puzzle was that Mr. Markey kept the total word count low (76) so that the grid could remain open and include great long entries like SERAGLIO (a beautiful word), OEDIPUS REX, PIGEON-TOED, CITY LINE, RADIO EDITS (I knew this because I used to be married to someone in the music business) and ZEROED IN ON. The only name I did not know but was happy to learn was Paul BROCA, the French doctor who pioneered the study of cadavers' brains, as well as the idea that different parts of the brain were responsible for different functions.

Brockes, an Englishwoman living in New York and the author of a previous memoir, "She Left Me the Gun," about her mother, is so smart and tartly charming (think "Fleabag" meets Helen Fielding) that it doesn't much matter that you sense an obligation to make a word count as she vacillates about some aspects of her story, particularly her relationship with her sort-of-partner, L. It's hard to fault her: While Brockes is another woman of privilege (and diligent savings), as a 21st-century freelance journalist she lives like a polar bear, hopping from one glossy magazine ice floe to another.
