Donner Memorial State Park is a state park of California, US, preserving the site of the Donner Camp, where members of the ill-fated Donner Party were trapped by weather during the winter of 1846–1847. Caught without shelter or adequate supplies, members of the group resorted to cannibalism to survive. The Sierra Nevada site has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The state park contains the Emigrant Trail Museum and the Pioneer Monument dedicated to the travelers of the Emigrant Trail.

In addition to the dead and injured, thousands were left without shelter or food. Fires erupted, growing to conflagrations in some places, exacerbating the damage.

Furthermore, a crew mortality rate of around 20% was expected during a voyage, with sailors dying as a result of disease, flogging or slave uprisings. In summer In winter The Yakutian (, Sakha ata) or Yakut is a native horse breed from the Siberian Sakha Republic (or Yakutia) region. It is large compared to the otherwise similar Mongolian horse and Przewalski's horse. It is noted for its adaptation to the extreme cold climate of Yakutia, including the ability to locate and graze on vegetation that is under deep snow cover, and to survive without shelter in temperatures that reach . The horses appear to have evolved from domesticated horses brought with the Yakuts when they migrated to the area beginning in the 13th century, and are not descended from wild horses known to inhabit the area in Neolithic times.

Carl Borckenhagen was schooled in the nearby town of Koblenz, where his health began to deteriorate from severe exposure to nighttime mid-winter temperatures, when he spent a period there without shelter.

Both sides in the conflict raised complaints about property destruction in diplomatic notes addressed to the Entente. Family homelessness, similar to other forms and categories of homelessness often contain more challenges associated with living such as access to adequate health care, social services, employment, shelter and basic necessities. Family homelessness is not only impactful for individuals economically, but can also create a strain on their health, as due to decreased living standards and means to access medication and health care providers, it can create vulnerability in regards to their health, putting them at risk for contracting infections and worsening pre- existing health conditions . Moreover being homeless can lower life expectancy, as the Australian Medical Journal states that in some cases, there can be a 30 year age gap in life expectancy between those who are homeless and those who aren’t Moreover, with decreased stable shelter (particularly families who are living without shelter) have increased risk of catching viruses and infections when outbreaks and epidemics/pandemics occur.
