The carnival starts on Sunday and ends on Shrove Tuesday. On the Saturday evening before the start of the carnival, in the De Werf cultural centre, a humorous city council session takes place, in which Prince Carnival receives the city key and local politicians are mocked. The session is held in the local dialect (Oilsjters) and is done by experienced carnival members rather than the actual city council. On Sunday the great carnival parade crosses the streets, a spectacle involving tens of thousands of visitors every year.

The NDSM- werf area has been subject to heavy urban renewal since the 2000s. After the opening of the North Sea Canal in 1876, the port of Amsterdam became accessible to steamers. The municipality of Amsterdam voted to begin converting northern rural areas into industry fields, a policy which was started by the establishment of the Stoomvaartmaatschappij Nederland, Koninklijke Nederlandse Stoomboot-Maatschappij (KNSM) and others. The Amsterdam Drydock Company, founded on their initiative, built a ship repair yard on the north bank, and the Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NDSM) established a new shipyard.

They toured in France, Belgium and the Netherlands in 1991 and then released a CD called "Sketches of Belgium" the next year, a reference to Miles Davis's "Sketches of Spain". The album, the first edited by De Werf, included an instrumental cover of Sting's Roxanne as well as two songs written by Thelonious Monk. In 1995 Defoort composed (with Fabrizio Cassol) the Variations on a Love Supreme. Defoort took part in the Octurn project in 1996 (he had already composed their 1994 album) and began to play with Mark Turner.

With Renée Groeneveld and Brechtje van der Werf she started to sail in the new Olympic women class, The Elliott 6m Match racing class. They finished fourth at the Kieler Woche Worldcup, second at the Europeans and they won the Sail for Gold Worldcup in Weymouth in September 2009 and the Prinses Sofia Worldcup event in April 2010. However this team did not qualify for the Olympics. After a team was formed with Bes, Marcelien Bos- de Koning and Mandy Mulder the qualification for the 2012 olympics was made.

The Rogger is a glass-fibre (fiberglass) motor-sailer produced in the Netherlands. It was designed by Dick Lefeber (1927–2000), and stands out due to its sturdy appearance and heavy construction. From 1969 through 1976, Rogger hulls were produced by Polyboat/Polymarin/Halmatic, and were finished out by Eista Werf in Ammerzoden and Nederhemert in the Netherlands. From 1997–1995, the final Rogger models were finished out at Stangate Marine in Littlehampton, England, and were sold as the Rogger 36 Ketch, Ushant 41 and Atlas Rogger 46.

The ship was built by a sub-company of the ship building tycoon Bonn & Mees; Werf De Noord N. V., Ablasserdam of Rotterdam during 1921, as part of a large order from the Holland and America line known as Nederlandsche-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart. The SS Binnendijk was a type "B" class ship. With a gross tonnage of 6875, the ship was powered by 3 steam turbines with double reduction gearing (single screw) and had a shaft horsepower of 3000, giving the ship a max speed of 12.5 knots. The engine was built by Harland & Wolff Ltd.

After World War I had finished, the Rotterdam first had to go to Glasgow to dock, as there was no suitable drydock in the Netherlands. On 24 January the Rotterdam left the Rotterdam for New York with less than 100 passengers, but in Brest she picked up many American soldiers. These trips with American soldiers continued for some months, and gradually the regular service from New York to Rotterdam was restored. In April 1921 the Rotterdam was the first ship to officially use the 46,000 tons drydock at Wilton%27s Dok- en Werf Maatschappij in Schiedam.

However, John Lothrop Motley argues, and so do a lot of Dutch etymologists and historians, that Antwerp's name derives from "anda" (at) and "werpum" (wharf) to give an 't werf (on the wharf, in the same meaning as the current English wharf).

The Sea Ranger Service follows a similar approach for ocean conservation. It trains young people (partly long-term unemployed youth) with the help of veterans as Sea Rangers. After their one-year deployment as Sea Rangers, in which they carry out conservation tasks at sea, the Sea Rangers transition into maritime employment.

The Sea Ranger Service was founded by conservationist Wietse van der Werf in 2016. After having been awarded the Future for Nature Award for his innovative approach to marine conservation, he used the prize money to start the Sea Ranger initiative, which was officially launched by Mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb, in August 2016. Initially founded as a non-profit organisation in The Netherlands, the Sea Ranger Service developed a business model for its conservation work and transitioned into operating as a social enterprise from 2017. In March 2018 the organisation organised a Sea Ranger Bootcamp, in which the first Sea Rangers were selected and trained.

Free Enterprise was built in 1962 by I.C.H. Holland, Werf Gusto Yard, Schiedam, the Netherlands, for Townsend Brothers Ferries. She was their first purpose built roll-on/roll-off passenger and vehicle ferry and entered service in 1962 on the Dover - Calais route. On delivery of in May 1965, she was renamed Free Enterprise I. In 1968, the company became European Ferries, continuing to operate services as Townsend Thoresen and Free Enterprise I appeared briefly in the 1969 film classic The Italian Job, starring Michael Caine, Noël Coward and Benny Hill. In February 1980, Free Enterprise I was sold to Ventouris Group as the Kimolos.

Van Der Sluijs has directed for a range of venues and companies in the Netherlands, often directing Dutch language premieres of British and American plays. He directed the first Dutch production of Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, for which production company Well Made Productions won the 2017 Amsterdam Award for the Arts, as well as its response play Beneatha's Place by Kwame Kwei-Armah for Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam. Other work includes the Dutch premiere production of The Mountaintop by Katori Hall, and Duncan Macmillan's Lungs,, as well as Simon Stephens' Motortown. Original Dutch plays in his direction include Waterdragers for Het Zuidelijk Toneel and Ik Weet Van Geen Herinnering for Festival aan de Werf.

An Omni Processor mitigates unsafe methods in developing countries of capturing and treating human waste, which annually result in the spread of disease and the deaths of more than 1.5 million children.

This supports the idea that labour inputs and therefore workers' earnings rose relative to what was required for basic subsistence. Using an estimation strategy based on labour market arbitrage originally proposed by Clark and Van der Werf, a later study by Humphries and Weisdorf shows similar rising trends in early modern labour inputs. The approach implies that day rates in combination with annual rates facilitate the computation of the working year needed in day labour in order to obtain the income that could be earned by annual employees. The method suggests that labour input per year in England grew more than two-fold, from less than 150 days during the medieval period to well over 300 days during the Industrial Revolution.

Haarlem companies like Th. Figee & Co, the shipyard Werf Conrad, and Koninklijke Fabriek van Rijtuigen en Spoorwagens J.J. Beijnes (who represented the Dutch Railway company in Haarlem) eventually set up their own evening schools, where the young students worked during the day and studied in the evening. The first one was in the Lange Margarethastraat, an evening school for young factory workers (both boys and girls) in 1871. This evening "Industrial School", which was for the lower income households, was not a great success, since young people who worked all day had trouble concentrating in the evening. More and more voices were heard in favor of proper day schooling, and in 1891, the social activist Daniel de Clercq began the Haarlem society called De Ambachtsschool to unify these various city efforts to start a vocational school in Haarlem.

Since 1999 the orchestra is supported by the Flemish government. Since then it has established a reputation both at home and on relevant jazz stages abroad: Jazz Middelheim (Antwerp, Belgium), Jazz at Lincoln Center (New York, U.S.), Concertgebouw Amsterdam (Netherlands), Jazz à Vienne (France), Paris Jazz Festival (France) and many others. BJO has performed with Philip Catherine, Bert Joris, Royal Flemish Philharmonic, Tutu Puoane, Brussels Philharmonic, David Linx and Richard Galliano in its own productions.

SS Paris in the 46,000 tons dock at Schiedam in 1926 In 1921 there was also a financial reorganization. A new public company called Wilton's Dok- en Werf Maatschappij N.V. was founded. It acquired all shares of Wilton's Machinefabriek en Scheepswerf, and in turn emitted shares for 25,000,000 guilders. The HAL got involved in the company by converting a loan into shares. The 1918-1929 period was in general profitable for the company, except for a small downturn in 1921 and 1922. From 1920-1928 the number ships in the drydocks grew from 331 to 486 while the tonnage grew from 1,346,896 to 2,506,609 R.T.B. The board of the company had the ambition to bring the ship and engine construction activities of the company to the same height as that of the ship repair activities, but this was not so simple.

Van der Werf founded the Sea Ranger Service in 2016 as a social enterprise which trains young people as Sea Rangers and deploys special sailing work ships to carry out marine management tasks in direct cooperation with governments. Sea Ranger tasks include maritime surveillance, wildlife monitoring, underwater photography and surveys, sea water sampling, restoration of underwater seagrass meadows and general offshore inspections tasks but excludes any enforcement activities. The current operational area for the Sea Rangers is the North Sea yet the Sea Ranger Service has announced plans to scale its approach internationally, through a social franchising model which it has developed in collaboration with PwC and IKEA. In May 2019 the Sea Ranger Service was awarded the Medal of Honour by the Enkhuizen Maritime College and the Dutch Commercial Sailing Board for operating the first commercial sailing vessel in the offshore industry .

Schellingwouderbrug Amsterdam-Noord is connected by one road bridge, the Schellingwouderbrug, and three road tunnels, the Coentunnel (west), IJtunnel (centre) and Zeeburgertunnel (east), to other parts of Amsterdam. Because the area is physically separated from the rest of the Amsterdam conurbation, it is not served by trams.

The various terms used reflect the regional dialects of the North European region. In English sources, terp appears to be by far the most common term used. These mounds occur in the coastal parts of the Netherlands (in the provinces of Zeeland, Friesland and Groningen), in southern parts of Denmark and in the north-eastern parts of Germany where, before dykes were made, floodwater interfered with daily life.
