Light can be diverted by different methods. The Dakshin Gangotri Glacier () is a small tongue of the polar continental ice sheet impinging on the Schirmacher Oasis of central Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. It was discovered by the Second Indian Expedition to Antarctica in 1983, and is named after the Gangotri Glacier in the Himalayas. The first Antarctic research base of India, Dakshin Gangotri is located near to the glacier. Since then its snout, and the area around it, has been regularly monitored and it has become a valuable site for tracking the impact of global warming through changes in the movement of the Antarctic ice sheet.

The Verwey transition is a low-temperature phase transition in the mineral magnetite near 125 kelvins associated with changes in its magnetic, electrical, and thermal properties. Upon warming through the Verwey transition temperature (), the magnetite crystal lattice changes from a monoclinic structure insulator to the metallic cubic inverse spinel structure that persists at room temperature. The phenomenon is named after Evert Verwey, a Dutch chemist who first recognized, in the 1940s, the connection between the structural transition and the changes in the physical properties of magnetite. This was the first metal-insulator transition to be found.

For this work he was elected in 1984 to the United States National Academy of Sciences. A paper that Marohasy co-authored with her Institute of Public Affairs colleague John Abbot, titled "The application of machine learning for evaluating anthropogenic versus natural climate change," was made available online on 5 August 2017. It was published in GeoResJ, a quarterly peer-reviewed journal in Earth Sciences that began publishing in 2014 and is to be discontinued from January 2018. This deforestation is the most significant aspect of land surface change affecting global warming. The main causes of deforestation are: permanent land-use change from forest to agricultural land producing products such as beef and palm oil (27%), logging to produce forestry/forest products (26%), short term shifting cultivation (24%), and wildfires (23%)..
