The second round featured eight heats run on the same night for the first time and included a formidable race in which Myrtown won from Lively Band in 29.20. Other winners included the Irish TV Trophy winner Waverley Supreme and Nelson Blast but Tommy Astaire was eliminated. In the quarter-finals Myrtown won in 29.00 and still looked like the one to beat. Nelsons Blast set a time of 29.12 before Lively Band recorded 29.05; the remaining heat went to Shady Wagger.

Myrtown suffered his first defeat in the semi-finals losing out to Shady Wagger; Lively Band won the other semi from National Produce Stakes champion Quote Me and Windjammer. The final draw proved pivotal because Lively Band and Myrtown both broke well from the traps but the latter found trouble trying to get across to the rails which allowed the Jack Murphy trained Lively Band to ease to victory from the strong finishing Windjammer. Quote Me failed to finish with a serious injury.

Tuck is a common character in modern Robin Hood stories, which depict him as a jovial friar and one of Robin's Merry Men. The figure of Tuck was common in the May Games festivals of England and Scotland during the 15th through 17th centuries. He appears as a character in the fragment of a Robin Hood play from 1475, sometimes called Robin Hood and the Knight or Robin Hood and the Sheriff, and a play for the May games published in 1560 which tells a story similar to "Robin Hood and the Curtal Friar". (The oldest surviving copy of this ballad is from the 17th century.) Other popular attractions at the event are the real life replicas of the Wacky Races cars (Thursday is now known as Press preview day but still incorporates The Moving Motor Show), which serves to provide lunchtime entertainment for the crowds, and the airshows, which usually include the RAF Tornado and Red Arrows, and in 2004 and 2005 a low-flying Boeing 747; a low-flying Airbus A380 appeared at the 2008 event. From the festival's beginning, poster art had been illustrated by renowned motor racing artist Peter Hearsey until his retirement in 2015. In 2016, the poster art was designed by Klaus Wagger, who rose to prominence as a racing artist when he won a competition to design the official poster for Mille Miglia in 2000. In recent years, they have also put on the GAS Arena (Goodwood Action Sports) who showcase extreme stunts such as Freestyle Motorcross, BMX and Trial bike Riding In 2018, for the first time at the Festival, a driverless Roborace racing car negotiated the course, and a virtual passenger seat experience was made available online.
