Maritime Volunteer Services recognised at St. James Palace The Maritime Volunteer Service has around 400 members in 27 units around the United Kingdom. The MVS maintains strong links with local authorities, harbour boards and other maritime organisations. In 2014 the MVS marked its 20th Anniversary at an official dinner in Portsmouth, where the guest of honour was Vice-Admiral Sir Alan Massey KCB, CBE, RN Chief Executive of the MCA.

The events/volunteer services done by the organization include: "Tenant Services," "Super Sunday," and clean-up/graffiti removal. "Tenant Services" is done twice a month, where the youths go to single room occupancies around San Francisco's Chinatown and interact with the seniors who live there, bridging the intergeneration gap. "Super Sunday" is an event where the youth take care of kids while their parents are having SRO meetings at Gordon J. Lau Elementary School. Clean-up/graffiti removal is where the youth break into groups, led by the cabinet, to sweep or paint over the graffiti of the alleyways of San Francisco's Chinatown.

Protain was one of the founding members of the Soroptomist Club, an organization for business and professional women to provide worldwide volunteer services for the improvement of the lives of women and girls. Protain, along with other feminists including Grenadian Louise Rowley, Jamaican Una Marson, and Trinidadians Beatrice Greig and Audrey Jeffers led the spread of feminism throughout the Caribbean. In 1957, Protain became the first woman nominated to the Grenadian Legislative Council, serving on the Education and Social Services Committee. The following year, she acted as a delegate for Grenada in the launching of the Parliament of the West Indies Federation.

After the German invasion of Poland, she volunteered for the Women's Volunteer Services and took part in the September campaign. She was a driver and organizer of logistical supplies and field hospitals for the Polish 19th Infantry Division. In mid-October, she joined the underground organizations Service for Poland's Victory (SZP) and Union of Armed Struggle (ZWZ), and later of the Polish Home Army (AK). Until the end of the German occupation, she was the chief of the communication cell "Zagroda" attached to the Main Headquarters of the AK. Sometime in 1943, she was married again to Jan Piwnik ("Ponury"), one of the Cichociemni and a famous anti-Nazi partisan commander.

In 1962, the US Peace Corps convened the International Conference on Middle Level Manpower in Puerto Rico, where the role of international volunteers helping to build skills in developing countries was promoted. As a result, the International Peace Corps Secretariat, later the International Secretariat for Volunteer Service (ISVS), was created as a global organization to promote volunteer services for development around the world. When the American Civil War began in 1861, Brisbin was a lawyer in practice. He enlisted in the Pennsylvania volunteer services that April as a private. On April 26, he was appointed a second lieutenant in the mounted 2nd U.S. Dragoons.Eicher gives his unit at this time as the 2nd Dragoons, but Warner lists it as the 1st Dragoons, to which he soon transferred to in the fall of 1861. Many of the awards were brevet major general grades given to full, actual grade regular army or volunteer force brigadier generals. A Woodrow Wilson Fellowship that he received in his senior year at Penn State allowed him to study English literature at Harvard University, where he received his A.M. Balaban was a conscientious objector in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. In a moment at Harvard which he writes about in his memoir Remembering Heaven's Face, he petitioned his draft board to allow him to drop his student deferment to go to Vietnam with the International Volunteer Services, where he taught at a university until it was bombed in the Tet Offensive.

The Housing First program seems to benefit the homeless in every aspect except for substance abuse, for which the program offers little accountability. An emerging consensus is that the Housing First program still gives clients a higher chance at retaining their housing once they get it. A few critical voices argue that it misuses resources and does more harm than good; they suggest that it encourages rent seeking and that there is not yet enough evidence- based research on the effects of this program on the homeless population. Some formerly homeless people, who were finally able to obtain housing and other assets which helped to return to a normal lifestyle, have donated money and volunteer services to the organizations that provided aid to them during their homelessness.

The university unofficially reopened the tower on January 26, 2017, though no changes to the tower in relation to code violations were observed. Discontent amongst the Altgeld Ringers compelled math adviser and chimesplayer Ernesto Machado to send an email on March 8, 2017 to Associate Provost for Capital Planning Matthew Tomaszewski, who oversees Altgeld Hall Tower. The group requested information on the administration's expected plans for the tower, the position of chimesmaster to become an official, paid position, a public announcement of Chimesmaster Emeritus Sue Wood's retirement, a ceremony in honor of her years of voluntary service, and to expedite necessary repairs in the tower. Tanner entered the United States Navy in 1868, coming over from the deactivated volunteer services.
