Initially, when the bill was first introduced, Arthur F. Burns, the Federal Reserve Board chairman, was critical of President Carter’s economic program. Burns targeted the $50 tax rebate, stating that the reserve does not have enough money and would not be the most effective method in stimulating the economy. In turn, he suggested that the government reduce levies in corporate tax, and public employment should only be established as a last resort. The New York Times commented on President Carter for attempting to please all sides. In a news analysis piece, they wrote, “He was in truth the very model of an agreeable man.” This statement was to criticize Carter of only surrounding himself with people who agreed with him and at the same time, agreed with all the advice that he received from others.

When Valéry Giscard d'Estaing became president, he nominated Chirac as prime minister on 27 May 1974, to reconcile the "Giscardian" and "non-Giscardian" factions of the parliamentary majority. While the film's lead is a woman, she gets by with help from her male counterpart, played by Clooney. Bullock's character Ryan Stone is described as "the very model of the damsel in distress," as she can never get out of a situation on her own and must lean on Clooney's character to do the heavy lifting. The role of Bullock's character is thought to be an act of defiant feminism, as she is the lead in a science fiction film, but below the surface viewers find that the film actually subscribes to traditional gender stereotypes and does not at all portray Bullock's character as a true independent woman.

In the second scene in Act One, a couple is arguing about person A having proposed to person B. Person B feels offended and objectified by person A's choice of words ('I want...') and doubts the motifs behind marriage. The third scene of Act One is a dialogue between an employer and an employee, referred to as a woman, who wants to work less in order to have more free time. The employer automatically assumes she is pregnant or wants to become pregnant and draws a line between mothers and career girls. The fourth and last scene of Act One is set in a supermarket where a woman had been lying on the floor with her dress over her head, exposing her naked, and apparently not very model-like, body together with different kinds of groceries.
