When the substrata changes into Knockmore Limestone, the character of the cave changes to a more vertically oriented passage. After some more climbing there is a 22 m vertical drop with a further crawl at the base, which leads to a completely flooded section or sump, which itself is completely blocked up with silt. Above this is a very high roofed chamber or aven.

Within two weeks of its closure, Six Flags announced that the roller coaster would reemerge in 2015 as a steel-tracked roller coaster named Twisted Colossus. Dynamo first opened in 1993 replacing the Cine 2000 as AstroDancer and was located in the Fantasy World (now known as X-Sector) section of the park. Sulphide Creek Falls is a tall, moderately large volume waterfall within North Cascades National Park in Washington state. The falls drop from Sulphide Lake (elevation ) on the southeast side of Mount Shuksan down a narrow flume-like canyon to a broad basin below. Because of the narrow, twisting shape of the canyon the waterfall is exceptionally difficult to see from ground-level perspectives. The total vertical drop of the waterfall is in the range of to feet, but it has not yet been accurately measured.

Acrophobia is the latest version in a long-running series of attractions designed by Intamin that create the sensation of free fall. The first free-fall towers were, in essence, vertical drop roller coaster rides, although many coaster fans do not classify them as such. One such example was Six Flags Over Georgia's own Free Fall, which was installed in the park in 1983 and removed in December 2006. The Giant Drop variant improved upon the original free-fall tower in numerous ways, most noticeably in its braking system.

On December 11, 2006, two cranes installed the highest piece of Griffon with an evergreen tree. Should the ocean level ever exceed the height of the falls again, downcutting would reverse entirely with silt filling in the now-underwater falls. The Intervales track only lasted one season (1929–30). Led by Henry Homburger, the first track was surveyed and constructed during 1929-30 at Mount Van Hoevenberg, located in the Whiteface Mountain area though it was in spite of protests of using state-owned lands for construction of the facility for environmental reasons. After construction took place during August–December 1930, the track opened for use on Christmas Day 1930. They are small fish, averaging at , orange-brown with white undersides in life, with characteristic iridescent blue or lavender stripes on the sides and on top of the body. They are usually found in large schools in the sloping or vertical drop-offs at coral reef edges. They are sometimes caught for the aquarium trade, and are also known by hobbyists under the name blue line flagtail goby.

Water to power the turbine generators is delivered through an underground penstock connecting the dam and the powerhouse. It delivers water from the dam at the southeasterly end of Lake Chelan to the powerhouse at Chelan Falls, a vertical drop of nearly 400 feet (120 m). Wallace's Cave in the Lugar Gorge at Auchinleck in the Parish of Auchinleck is an 18th-century grotto contemporary with Dr Johnson's Summerhouse, also located on the Auchinleck Estate. It shows superior workmanship in its construction, possibly being the enlargement of a pre-existing cave. The cave or grotto lies downstream of the confluence of the Dippol Burn with the River Lugar and is reached via a once well formed path, however access is now hazardous due to the condition of the cliff edge path and the vertical drop into the River Lugar.

Due to its westerly aspect and position on the northern side of the Pyrenees, and consequent Atlantic climate, the resort of Baqueira-Beret has a good snow record throughout the winter. Much of the region of the Aran Valley and Àneu Valley is made up of over 50 small rural populations, each one with stone and wood houses and ancient Romanesque churches. Anthony Lakes is a ski area located in eastern Oregon, near the cities of La Grande, and Baker City. The resort has one triple chairlift, and a vertical drop of 900 ft (274 m). The summit elevation is 8000 ft (2438 m) above sea level, and the terrain is mostly of an intermediate and expert level. The resort also offers Snowcat skiing on nearby peaks, and includes a boardercross course as well as a well maintained cross-country (Nordic) ski trails complete with its own Nordic center building.

Magic Mountain is a ski resort located on Glebe Mountain in Londonderry, Vermont. It features a 1,500-foot vertical drop. The summit is at 2,850 feet and the base at 1,350 feet. Magic has a long history, dating from the 1960s when ski instructor and film-maker Hans Thorner founded the area as its terrain reminded him of his native Swiss Alps. Part of Vermont's original "Golden Triangle" of ski areas all within 10 miles of each other (Stratton and Bromley the other two large areas), Magic thrived in the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s.

Developed in the 1980s, the Super-G is less technical than others, and is known for the speed of the skier, who navigate a course that has a vertical drop between to from top to bottom. Compared to other para-alpine skiing disciplines, this course tends to be mid-length. It is longer than the Giant Slalom and the Slalom but shorter than the Downhill course. The castle remains a private residence, but recently the owners of the property have been engaged in an ongoing effort to reopen the property for public enjoyment. "About The Bettendorf Castle" In 1945, Fox River Grove established the first VFW post in McHenry County. The Barberry Hills Ski Area—a ski hill complete with two rope tows, a vertical drop of 145 feet, and a ski shop—was established in the early 1960s. While the rope tows and shop are now defunct, the hill itself is still a destination for sledding in winter.

The Discoveryland is divided into six themed areas: Crazy Town, Mysterious Desert, Metal Factory, Magic Forest, Legend Castle and Wedding Palace. From here there are metal handholds driven into the rock to aid those who want to make the climb down to the valley below. Below that are a series of switchbacks that eventually lead to the Bedouin village of Hamaam. Mt. Arbel, with its 110-metre vertical drop, is the only known mountain in Israel to serve as a base jumping site. A hike to the top of Mount Arbel from the south is included in the Israel National Trail, and an approach from the west is part of the Jesus Trail; the trails converge temporarily at the peak.

The carousel, built in 1916 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, twenty-eight jumping horses, eighteen stationary horses, two chariots, and two Wurlitzer band organs. The roller coaster, also designed by PTC, was added in 1925 and featured a 65-foot vertical drop. (The tallest coaster of its era, at 100 feet, Cyclone, was built the same year at Revere Beach.) As interest in the park waned after the 1920s, the park added an open- air arena for boxing events. Dive Coaster features a 90°, 197 foot vertical drop that exits into an Immelmann loop. After the Immelmann, riders will swoop down to the ground then climb a curve up to the block brake, then go over a second near vertical dive dropping into a tunnel. Upon exiting the tunnel, riders make an overbanked turn into a water splash feature which exits into a bunny hill then into a helix before entering the final brake run. This ride is very similar to Griffon and SheiKra (the first half being part of Griffon and the other part being SheiKra).

Whitetail Resort's trail system was specifically designed to separate skiers of different skiing abilities. Separate first time, easier, intermediate and most difficult areas are lined up in sequence across the mountain, each fed by a different lift system, with trails connecting each area to its neighbors. Whitetail's trails are a series of straight parallels noted for the steady, sustained pitch of their vertical drop. The resort's design was noted by Snow Country Magazine, which gave its 1992 Best Overall Resort Design Award to Whitetail, and by Skiing Magazine, which recognized the resort for environmental excellence in area design.

The operators of Blue Cow purchased Guthega in 1991, and the new combined resort later merged with Perisher-Smiggins to become the largest ski resort in the Southern Hemisphere. In 2011 Perisher had 47 lifts covering 1,245 hectares and four village base areas: Perisher Valley (elevation 1720m), Blue Cow Terminal (1890 m), Smiggin Holes (1680 m) and Guthega (1640 m). The resort is spread across seven mountain peaks, with the highest lifted point being Mount Perisher Double Chair at 2,034 m and the greatest vertical drop on a single run being 355 m from the Ridge Chair at Blue Cow.

Located in central Vermont, Killington has 155 trails, 21 lifts, and extending across six interconnected mountain peaks. A seventh peak, Pico Mountain, was purchased by Killington in 1996, but operates as a separate resort on the same lift tickets. There have been several proposals to connect Killington and Pico with a series of lifts and trails since 1998, however, no plans have been finalized. The primary mountain is Killington Peak at , which has the second-highest summit in Vermont and has the second greatest vertical drop in the eastern United States (), after Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington, New York at .

Mad River Glen is a ski area in Fayston, Vermont. Located within the Green Mountain range, it sits in the Mad River Valley. Though not considered a large ski area, it has a vertical drop of , which ranks 14th in New England, and its terrain was ranked by Ski magazine as the most challenging on the east coast of the United States. Mad River Glen averages over of snow a year and maintains a traditional form of New England skiing that emphasizes snow preservation on narrow trails with little grooming instead of man-made snow on wide boulevards.

Early on the Green River, the Powell Expedition lost one of their large freight boats, the No Name, at a rapids they named Disaster Falls, washing up on Disaster Island. No one was killed, but many crucial supplies were lost, including all of the expedition's barometers. Powell and his men managed to recover some of the barometers - they were the only means Powell had at his disposal to determine altitude. Knowing the altitude was essential for producing good maps, and it allowed Powell to estimate how much vertical drop remained before the journey's endpoint, which had a known elevation.

Sugarbush Resort is a ski resort located in the Mad River valley in Warren, Vermont, owned by Alterra Mountain Company. It is one of the largest ski resorts in New England. The resort encompasses more than 4000 acres (16 km²) total, 484 trail acres (2.34 km²) skiable, 53 miles (85 km) of trails, and 16 ski lifts. Sugarbush has 111 ski trails, 18 additional marked wooded area, substantial off-piste skiing and riding, a summit elevation of , and a vertical drop of , second largest in Vermont after Killington, and the third largest in New England after Killington and Sugarloaf.

Les Deux Alpes offers approximately of posted runs and of vertical drop. In terms of pistes the resort has been termed "upside-down", as the lower slopes down to the resort are steeper and more challenging than the higher ski areas, including the wide and forgiving glacier runs. Less advanced skiers either take a gondola down to the resort or follow a lengthy, gentle but narrow, track on the path of the access road. In winter 2015/2016 a new run made an intermediate route to the resort available, an effort involving the movement of over 550,000 cubic meters of earth.

Immediately afterward, the coaster enters a banana roll inversion, a second corkscrew, and an airtime hill. The train ascends onto a set of block brakes, slowing the train down before it makes a U-turn to the right and ascends the vertical chain lift hill. Once at the top, the car is held by a brake before entering the 121.5°, beyond-vertical drop. Once the car is released from the top of the hill, it enters a dive loop, an inline loop, and an Immelmann loop, before hitting the final brake run and returning to the station.

Gem Lake is located on the western side of Big White and is served by the Gem Lake high-speed detachable quad chair. The Falcon and Powder Chairs, two and four person lifts respectively, are nearby. The Gem Lake lift is often windier than the east side lifts, but offers the largest single-lift vertical drop at the hill at 710 m. It has a lodge known as the Westridge Warming Hut complete with washrooms, coffee shop, ticket sales and large parking lot at its base; the base of the Gem Lake Express is quite distant from the Village area.

Lost Trail Powder Mountain is an alpine ski area in the western United States, on the Montana-Idaho border in the northern Rocky Mountains. In the Bitterroot Range, it is at the junction of US Highway 93 and Montana State Highway 43 at Lost Trail Pass, about one mile (1.6 km) northwest of Chief Joseph Pass, which is on the Continental Divide. The summit elevation of Saddle Mountain is above sea level with a vertical drop of . The main base area, which includes the parking lot and lodge, is at and in Montana, as are the majority of the runs.

Hiparión is another club located in El Hatillo; according to the Venezuelan Census of Cultural Heritage, this equestrian facility from the 1930s was originally used for horse trips, but it later became a place for the training and caring of horses. The Club Hiparión is internationally known for its equestrian training. Located at the highest point of the Municipality lies El Volcan, a small mountain of about 1500 meters from sea level. This mountain has a Downhill course that has about 500 meters of vertical drop, it is used by hundreds of riders a day during dry and wet weather, mostly on weekends.

View down the face of El Capitan from the belay stance at the top of pitch 20 (also known as Camp IV). The vertical drop from this point to the valley floor is about . As it became clear that any face could be conquered with sufficient perseverance and bolt-hole drilling, some climbers began searching for El Cap routes that could be climbed either free or with minimal aid. The "West Face" route was free climbed in 1979 by Ray Jardine and Bill Price; but despite numerous efforts by Jardine and others, The Nose resisted free attempts for another fourteen years.

The original paved road was narrow, in places had little or no shoulder, featured vertical drop-offs near the road, and was bumpy along most of its length due to years of patchwork repairs. It was long regarded as "one of the most dangerous roads in Pima County." In 1988, the Federal Lands Highway program began a series of seven projects aimed at significantly improving the roadway, with the assistance of the US Forest Service and Pima County. The projects were aimed at improving the quality of the roadway and increasing safety for travelers, while minimizing the impact on the visual aspects and natural beauty of the surrounding mountains.

The beach is composed of small white pebbles and sand. Goloritzé can be reached by boat, or by a path that from the Gulf reaches the cove, with a vertical drop of 470 meters and about an hour and a half walk. Currently (summer 2007) the coast near the beach (200 m from the shore) is completely closed to traffic of motorboats to preserve the beach from pollution and from the assault of tourists. To get to the beach by sea, the most comfortable and less demanding, available transport services are rental boats from the nearby ports of Arbatax and Santa Maria Navarrese (frazione of Baunei).

During the winter months (December-March, as conditions allow), the Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area, established in 1965, is open for downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding. The region has a maximum vertical drop of 327 ft (100 m), with a top elevation of 1,276 ft (390 m). The area consists of four ski lifts and thirteen trails - four rated Green Circle (beginner), four Blue Square (intermediate), three Black Diamond (advanced), and two Double Black Diamond (expert).

Designed by 1972 gold medalist Bernhard Russi, the steep "Grizzly Downhill" course was just in length, and began at a lofty above sea level, with a vertical drop of . The average gradient on the Grizzly Downhill was 30.87% (17.98°), exceeding the classic layouts of Kitzbühel (860 m vertical / 3312 m length = 25.97%, 15.05°) and Wengen (1025 m vertical / 4455 m length = 23.01%, 13.30°). The top five finishers completed the course in less than a hundred seconds, making it the quickest descending Olympic downhill.

Salmo Ski Area is a small ski area located in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia, Canada, 0.5km south of the village of Salmo, 28 miles (45 km) southeast of the city of Castlegar, and 31 miles (50 km) south of the city of Nelson. Annual snowfall averages 300 cm (10 ft) with a vertical drop of 340 m (1,120 ft) from a summit elevation of 945 m (3,100 ft) to a base elevation of 440m (2,100 ft).. There are four trails served by a T-Bar and a handle tow. The area features night-skiing, cross-country trails, and a halfpipe for snowboarding.

A firm criterion for the Winter Olympics is the availability of adequate alpine skiing venues, which narrows down potential locations significantly. The men's downhill requires a minimum vertical drop of , with a course length of around . Bormio and Cortina are notable regular stops on the World Cup circuit for men's and women's downhills, respectively. Just three days after a spectacular crash in the downhill, Austria's Hermann Maier returned to win the gold medal, and teammate Hans Knauss tied for the silver with Didier Cuche of Switzerland. Snow Summit is a ski resort that was established in 1952 and is in the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California. It is located by Big Bear Lake along with its sister resort Bear Mountain; these two resorts which operate under the same management are collectively known as Big Bear Mountain Resorts (BBMR). Snow Summit is one of the larger ski areas in Southern California, and is considered to be one of the most popular ski and snowboard destinations for patrons from around the Los Angeles area. Snow Summit is a mid-sized resort, with a topographic vertical drop, and of skiable terrain, all of it covered by snowmaking.

Other species discovered in the system, include the air-breathing land snails Zospeum tholussum. Like Lukina jama, Slovacka jama, Velebita and Meduza are also located at the "Hajdučki i Rožanski kukovi" special reserve, a dedicated part of the Sjeverni Velebit national park. Other notable caves include the "Slovacka jama" (Slovak pit), (1,320 m deep), "Velebita" (1026 m deep with underground free fall vertical drop of 513 metres ) and "Meduza" (679 m deep).

The crest of the hill can be seen from the A53 road (Shrewsbury to Market Drayton) several miles away. At the top of the hill, riders have to contend with a hard sandstone surface, before dropping back down the hill in a fearsome descent, beginning in an almost vertical drop, followed by a bumpy descent that tests riders' skill and bike control. Other famous obstacles include the 'whoop' section, a series of large man-made bumps that require a great deal of skill and courage from riders in order to tackle them at speed. A fall in this section is usually heavy and spectacular.

ProSlide debuted three types of water slides in 1987, Twisters, Kidz, and Plummets, which are all types of body flumes. The first Twisters opened at Mont Saint-Sauveur in Quebec and Adventure World Theme Park (now known as Six Flags America) in Largo, Maryland, United States; both parks opened 4 Twisters that year. Plummets consist of a vertical drop only, followed by a long, flat segment to help riders decelerate. The first Plummets opened at Aquapar Magog in Quebec and Six Flags America, respectively. ProSlide also debuted their children's water slides (ProSlide Kidz) in 1987, which are miniature versions of Twisters designed for young children.

The five areas—Bourg-Saint-Maurice, Arc 1600, Arc 1800, Arc 1950, and Arc 2000—are situated at an altitude spanning from 810 to 3226 metres, although skiing is mostly possible above 1200 metres. The ski area consists of 106 runs, 54 lifts, and 200 kilometres of descent. The highest peak in the resort is the Aiguille Rouge (Red Needle) from where is a 7 km long piste with 2026 metres in vertical drop down to the Village Villaroger. Since the opening of the Vanoise Express cable car in December 2003, Les Arcs has become part of the Paradiski group of ski- connected resorts, which also includes the La Plagne area.

Vallandry and Plan-Peisey 300px At one end of the ski area are the villages of Vallandry, Peisey, and Plan- Peisey, from which the Vanoise Express cable-car departs (to La Plagne, the other half of the Paradiski huge ski domain). At the other end, across the valley from Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise, are the villages of Le Pre and Villaroger. A continuous run with vertical drop links Aiguille Rouge to Le Pre, and although rather low at Villaroger can be reached for most of the season given artificial snow and that it is north facing. Administratively these villages are not part of the Les Arcs ski domain, but are seamlessly linked.

Big Sky Resort is a ski resort in the western United States, located in southwestern Montana in Madison County. An hour south of Bozeman via U.S. Highway 191 in Big Sky, Montana, it is the second-largest ski resort in the United States by acreage. Opened in late 1973, Big Sky Resort has more than of terrain and a vertical drop of , In July 2013, Big Sky Resort acquired on Spirit Mountain, which were previously owned by Spanish Peaks, a private club. In October of the same year, Big Sky Resort acquired the terrain and facilities of Moonlight Basin, a neighboring resort that shared the northern exposure of Lone Mountain.

US-95 continues north through Meadows Valley north of the junction (roadcam), then descends with the Little Salmon River to Riggins, tree-sparse but surrounded by mile- high mountains (vertical drop). Immediately after Riggins, the highway crosses the main Salmon River and enters the Pacific Time Zone; the current bridge was completed in 1999. US-95 northbound gradually descends with the widening river until White Bird, where it climbs in to the cut at the top of White Bird Hill, peaking at an elevation of (roadcam) with an average gradient of over 7%. The steeper, straighter, and faster multi-lane grade was opened in 1975, after ten challenging years of construction.

Summit Lake Ski Area is a small community-operated ski hill located at the lake and community of the same name, 16km (10 miles) east of Nakusp, British Columbia, Canada, in that province's Arrow Lakes-Slocan region. The hill, located at the east end of the lake adjacent to BC Hwy 6 has a T-Bar and rope tow and a daylodge with cafeteria with rentals and lessons. The area features night skiing, snowboarding, a halfpipe, a 1km cross-country ski trail, and a terrain park for summer use. Average annual snowfall is 3.8 m (12.5 ft), with a vertical drop of 152m (500 ft) on 12 hectares (30 acres).

Port del Comte () is a ski resort in located in the Port del Comte mountain range, in the pre-Pyrenees, at the north of the Serra de Querol, in Catalonia, Spain. The ski area has a summit elevation of 2400 m (7874 ft.) above sea level and a base of 1700 m (5577 ft.) with a vertical drop of 700 m (2297 ft.). The project is owned and operated by Southern California Edison (SCE). The use and reuse of the waters of the San Joaquin River, its South Fork, and the namesake of the project, Big Creek – over a vertical drop of – have over the years inspired a nickname, "The Hardest Working Water in the World". The primary purpose of the project was to provide electric power for the fast-growing city of Los Angeles.

In 1990, Peak 9 received its second high speed quad when Poma built the Beaver Run SuperChair, which replaced Lift D and provided top-to-bottom lift service on Peak 9. It is the longest operating lift on the mountain (1.7 miles), and also has the largest vertical drop of any chairlift on the mountain (1,600 feet). A few of Lift D's towers were repurposed as a lift evacuation training area, located just uphill from where the Beaver Run SuperChair crosses under the Peak 8 SuperConnect. In 1993, Breckenridge was purchased by Ralston-Purina, which already owned Keystone Resort and Arapahoe Basin. The three ski resorts logged a combined 2.6 million skier visits.

By early 1911 the Canadian Northern Railway began a second transcontinental railway along the south and east bank of the canyon, which was completed in a year's time. While carving into canyon walls to create new rail-bed, rock and debris were again dumped into the river in significant volumes at various locations, including Hells Gate. In early 1914, two years after the completion of the CNoR and during construction of a new tunnel, a large rockslide fell into the river just above the Hells Gate portal. Debris dispersed on the river bottom caused a 5-meter vertical drop in water depth and increased water velocity from five meters per second to 6.75m/second.

"A 125-foot roller coaster is coming to Playland's Castaway Cove in Ocean City next year. Nicknamed 'GaleForce,' the roller coaster will feature a 64 mph launch and a drop of beyond 90 degrees.... GaleForce and another roller coaster to be named soon will replace Playland's looping Python and Flitzer at 10th Street, according to the Ocean City Gazette." The two older coasters (Python and Flitzer) were removed and for the 2016 summer season, a new ride called "GaleForce" was being built, which is a high thrill roller coaster with three linear synchronous motor launches reaching speeds of and a beyond vertical drop. "GaleForce" officially opened to the public on May 26, 2017.

Ski Bluewood, formerly known as "Bluewood Ski Area," is an alpine ski area in the northwestern United States, in southeastern Washington. Located in Columbia County, at the northern end of the Blue Mountains in the Umatilla National Forest, the elevation at the base area is above sea level, with a summit of for a vertical drop of . The northward-facing slopes are about north of the Oregon border and west of Idaho, part of the headwaters of the Touchet River, the main tributary of the Walla Walla River. The only surface access to the base area of the mountain is through Dayton, to the northwest and nearly below on North Touchet Road.

Map of Rising Star Cave marking Dinaledi Chamber in red and Lesedi Chamber in yellow In October 2013, cavers Rick Hunter and Steve Tucker, under the direction of South African palaeoanthropologist Lee Rogers Berger, discovered the Dinaledi Chamber in Rising Star Cave in the Cradle of Humankind, South Africa, containing several hominin fossils. The chamber lies about from the entrance, and the main passage is about long and at its narrowest, and is at the bottom of a vertical drop. In total, more than 1,550 pieces of bone belonging to at least fifteen individuals (9 immature and 6 adults) have been recovered from the clay-rich sediments. Berger and colleagues published the findings in 2015.

The cave extends 45 metres, with a vertical drop of 23 metres, to a shallow pool of clear, sulfate-rich, warm acid water. (The pool's chemical composition gives it the unique ability to clean jewellery.) Another notable feature at Orakei Korako is the Soda Fountain, which burst into life in 1984 after a 17-year dormancy. To the south of this feature, high atop a cliff above Lake Ohakuri, are three further geysers, Kurapai, Ellan Vannin and Benedix Washer Geysers, in an area not accessible to the public because it is too dangerous. Temperatures of 100 degrees Celsius (212 degree fahrenheit) have been recorded here just 100 to 150 mm below the ground.

Next, compared to standard Bolliger & Mabillard 4 abreast cars, because of the extra weight of each train on a Dive Coaster, the size of the track must be larger than other B&M; models (such as the Hyper Coaster) to support the weight. At the top of the primary vertical drop, a braking system holds the train for 3 to 5 seconds, giving riders a view of the drop ahead before being released into the drop. In the station, Dive Coasters that use non-floorless trains simply use a standard station. With Dive Coasters that use floorless trains, in order to allow riders to load and unload the train, a movable floor is necessary.

There are extensions of massifs and tepuis (unique rock formations in the world) that have continuity with the orography of the Venezuelan Guiana. The oldest geological formations on the planet are found there, as well as one of the most important biodiversity reserves in the world. Among the extraordinary geological formations, the Roraima, with its 2,810 meters above sea level, and the Auyantepui, where the world's highest waterfall, Angel Falls, with its almost one thousand meters of vertical drop, stand out for their height. The Guiana Shield occupies the southern region of the Orinoco River and the northern region of the Amazon River, between the plains of Colombia and Venezuela and the Atlantic Ocean.

Hafjell Bike Park is renowned as the best Bike Park for downhill riding in Norway and some of the bike trails have a vertical drop of 830 m, varies in difficulty with jumps and drops for the ”nut balls” and easier lines for the beginners. Since its early inception in 2001, Hafjell Bike Park has exploded into a world class Bike Park. It started with the “Wednesday Club”, a group of local riders doing shuttle runs in the area that soon became tired of blasting down the Hafjell fire-roads and craved more demanding trails. In Feb, 2002 a meeting between Snorre Pedersen and the manager of Hafjell Alpine Centre, Geir Olsen occurred, resulting in support from Hafjell Alpine Centre, ending the Illegal trail building.

Mount Timothy Ski Area is a small ski area located in the South Cariboo region of British Columbia, Canada, 30 km north of 100 Mile House and 18 km northeast of Lac La Hache The area has a triple chairlift (the first in the south Cariboo), t-bar, platte lift and 2 Magic Carpet beginner lifts and has a vertical drop of 284m from a summit elevation of 1654m to a base elevation of 1370m. 35 runs range from Double black diamond to beginner terrain. This year Mt. Timothy will be opening with a brand new freestyle area geared towards the young and fearless. Mt. Timothy is visited by patrons from all across the world, as far away as Eastern Europe and Japan.

History of the Australian Alpine Club Anton also recognised the potential of the Thredbo Valley for construction of a major resort and village, with good vertical terrain. Construction began in 1957. Today, Thredbo has 14 ski-lifts and possesses Australia's longest ski resort run, the 5.9 km from Karel's T-Bar to Friday Flat; Australia's greatest vertical drop of 672 m; and the highest lifted point in Australia at 2037 m The last establishment of a major skifield in NSW came with the development of Blue Cow Mountain in the 1980s. In 1987 the Swiss-designed Skitube Alpine Railway opened to deliver skiers from Bullocks Flat, on the Alpine Way, to Perisher Valley and to Blue Cow, which also opened in 1987.

Snowhaven is a modest ski area in the western United States, located in north central Idaho, seven miles (11 km) southeast of Grangeville in The elevation of its summit is above sea level, with a vertical drop of on east-facing slopes. There are two surface lifts, a T-bar and a rope tow, serving 9 trails. The average annual snowfall is and the terrain is rated and T-bar was installed in the fall of 1972, which accompanied the addition of new runs, and was financed with a federal grant through the The facility is operated by the City of Grangeville and is open on weekends. Ski operations began around 1940, but it saw little use until after World War II.

Lookout Pass Ski and Recreation Area is a ski area in the western United States. It is at Lookout Pass on Interstate 90, on the border of Idaho and Montana, east of Mullan, Idaho. It has a summit elevation of on Runt Mountain with a vertical drop of on the northeast-facing slopes. Lookout Pass operates seven days per week from the beginning of the ski season until late March then six days a week (closed Tuesday) until closing, which is usually mid-April. The area has tripled in size since 2003; new terrain was opened to the southeast-facing slopes on the Montana side of the border in December 2003, and on the northwest-facing North Side (in Idaho) in 2006.

A second double chairlift, Brundage Creek, was added in 1976, in parallel with the original Pioneer. The Centennial triple chairlift was added in 1990 to the southern edge of the terrain, which increased the area's terrain by 30% and added of vertical drop by lowering the base. The Easy Street chairlift was installed at the beginner area in 1994, adding a lower parking lot at its base. The parallel double chairlifts were replaced in the summer of 1997 by a single high-speed detachable quad, the Blue Bird Express, which ascended to the summit in a rapid seven minutes. In April 2006, the J.R. Simplot Company sold its 50% interest in Brundage Mountain to the ski area's long-time co-owner, the DeBoer family.

The project would involved building a dam across the south of the Bundi River valley where it meets the Congo, then diverting the Congo from above the waterfalls into the north of the valley to create a huge reservoir. It is anticipated that the vertical drop, the volume and velocity of water flow at this site, can support a series of hydroelectric power stations, each with generation capacity ranging from 4 to 8 GW for a total of 40 GW for the whole complex. Inga III Power Station with capacity of 4.8 GW, would be the first power station in the series, to be constructed. The current design allows for the independent development of the different power stations in the series, as well as the phased development of each station.

The relief of Guiana is very varied, plains and savannahs, with heights ranging from 100 to 500 m; then the Gran Sabana, which is a plain with an average altitude of 1,000 m. and is home to the tepuis, extraordinary geological formations, among which the Roraima, with its 2.810 m. and the Auyantepui, from which the waterfall, the highest in the world, falls, the Salto Ángel, with its almost one thousand meters of vertical drop and finally the sierras or mountain ranges that are several and reach considerable peaks and whose culminating point is the Marahuaca hill with its 3,840 m. Everything about the relief can be seen in greater detail in each of the states that make up Guyana and will be described separately in each of them.

Bald Mountain in summer. It is the primary ski mountain of the Sun Valley ski resort, and renowned for its lengthy runs at a uniform gradient, at varying levels of difficulty, and with little wind. In the Sun Valley's fourth year of operation (1939–40), Bald Mountain was opened for lift-served skiing, with a series of three (single-seat) chairlifts, unloading at an elevation of 9020 feet (2749 m),. With a base elevation of 5750 feet (1753 m) along the Big Wood River at River Run, Baldy's vertical drop is 3400 feet (1036 m) along its northeast face. It is served by 14 ski lifts (1 eight-person gondola, 7 high-speed quads, 3 triples, 2 doubles, 1 surface); Baldy has more uphill capacity per skier than any other ski area.

A total of eight dams and tunnels, the longest of which stretches , and nine powerhouses with a total installed capacity of 1,014 MW were built in stages spanning the 20th century, with the last powerhouse coming on line in 1987. The consistent use and reuse of the waters of the San Joaquin River, its South Fork, and the namesake of the project, Big Creek, over a vertical drop of , have over the years inspired a nickname, "The Hardest Working Water in the World". Krasnaya Polyana (; , Gwbaadwy; , ‘atquaj) is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) in Krasnopolyansky Settlement Okrug, which is under the administrative jurisdiction of Adlersky City District of the City of Sochi in Krasnodar Krai, Russia. Population: Located in the Western Caucasus, it is home to the new Rosa Khutor alpine ski resort, with a base elevation of along the Mzymta River, from its influx into the Black Sea in Adlersky City District of Sochi. The lift-served summit climbs to , giving a vertical drop of over a mile at . The resort hosted the Alpine and Nordic events of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, having previously hosted World Cup alpine events from February 2012, two years earlier and is also the ashes of Canadian skier Sarah Burke were spread.

The Kaweah River is a river draining the southern Sierra Nevada in Tulare County, California in the United States. Fed primarily by high elevation snowmelt along the Great Western Divide, the Kaweah begins as four forks in Sequoia National Park, where the watershed is noted for its alpine scenery and its dense concentrations of giant sequoias, the largest trees on Earth. It then flows in a southwest direction to Lake Kaweah – the only major reservoir on the river – and into the San Joaquin Valley, where it diverges into multiple channels across an alluvial plain around Visalia. With its Middle Fork headwaters starting at almost above sea level, the river has a vertical drop of nearly on its short run to the San Joaquin Valley, making it one of the steepest river drainages in the United States.

Universal Creative's Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is considered to be the world's first "story coaster". The Creative team's coaster broke multiple records by being the first coaster in the U.S. to have a free-fall vertical drop (17 feet), catapulting guests 65 feet in the air at more than a 70 degree angle then immediately dropping them back down in one movement, having the most launches of any coaster in the world (7 total), and containing the longest coaster track in Florida, measuring approximately a mile in length. The construction of this attraction also included planting a forest of 1,200 trees. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure won the Thea Award from the Themed Entertainment Association for outstanding achievement, the Best New Roller Coaster Award from Theme Park Insider, and was named "best new attraction installation of 2019" from the 2019 Golden Ticket Awards.

Trimma caudomaculatum, the blotch-tailed pygmygoby , is a species of goby from the Western Pacific. Like other members of the genus, they are usually found in large schools in the sloping or vertical drop-offs at coral reef edges. Similar to other species of Trimma this species consists of multiple cases of bidirectional sex change, meaning that if a group is lacking in a specific sex a partial amount of the group can change their undeveloped gonad structure of the opposite sex in order to accommodate. This sex change is made possible due to the females having a developed set of ovaries with female hormones that are developed, and a set of testis and male hormones that are underdeveloped; The males follow a similar set up in vice versa, so their testis and male hormones are developed, while the ovaries and female hormones are underdeveloped.

The nearby Lone Peak triple chairlift provided the lift-served maximum of , unloading at the bowl beneath Lone Mountain's summit, providing a vertical drop of just under , and the Explorer double chair served novice terrain just above the base. The fourth lift was the Andesite double, which climbed the north face of adjacent Andesite Mountain to ; it was renamed Ram's Horn in 1978, and replaced with the Ramcharger high speed quad in 1990. Batman: Arkham Asylum Among its roller coasters, highlights include Superman: La Atracción de Acero, a first in Europe with its floorless trains, Batman: Arkham Asylum, an inverted roller coaster, Coaster-Express, a wooden coaster and Stunt Fall, a giant inverted boomerang offering guests a vertical drop of 54.4 m reaching a top speed of 115 km/h. Another prominent attraction is La Venganza del Enigma, a structure 100 meters high that drops visitors at 80 km/h. Other attractions at the park include Correcaminos Bip, Bip, a Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner coaster which delivers high speeds and drops (though it has no inversions) and La Aventura de Scooby-Doo, an interactive ride for families, manufactured by US firm Sally Corporation. Saas-Fee offers 22 lifts, including 3 cable cars, 1 funicular railway (Metro Alpin), 5 gondolas (1 dedicated to walkers), 2 chairlifts, the remainder being surface lifts (draglifts). The ski run has a vertical drop of 1,800 m (5,906 ft), a top elevation of 3,600 m (11,811 ft) and covers ( beginner, intermediate, advanced).

The beginnings of the Brazilian speleology in the eighteenth and nineteenth century mingle with the history of Caraça. From 1818 reports of two European naturalists, Johann Baptist von Spix and Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius, cited the existence of several caves in the Serra do Caraça. About this place, it is said that in 1922 the priests of the Caraça College had discovered at the Inficionado peak, which stands above sea level, the Centenary grotto whose first speleological data appeared for the first time only in 1952 when a more technical survey took place resulting in a 3,790 horizontal projection (4,700 linear meters) and a vertical drop of with several entrances, almost always in the form of pits. Six more caves have been explored: Centenário II, with 20 meters of horizontal projection, Centenário III, formed by two parallel galleries connected by a narrow duct, Centum, Bloco Suspenso, which presents small depths of up to 20 meters, Fumaça and Bocaina with 960 meters of horizontal projection (1,200 linear meters) and 304 meters of unevenness.

By midnight both units were behind the 1st Battalion, which during the afternoon had occupied the first ridge east of Route 24 on the new defense line. The 3rd Battalion filled lower ground between the ridge and the road while the 2nd Battalion and the French battalion, which had disengaged from the PVA roadblock force as the two battalions east of the road had come abreast, assembled to the rear for the remainder of the night. As the two remaining tank platoons of Company C brought up the rear of the withdrawal they were ordered by the company commander to leave the road at Chaun-ni and follow the stream bed south, as Company B already had done, one platoon missed the turnoff point and came upon the disabled tank below town. Unable to turn around in the narrow road space between the embankment on the east and steep slopes on the west and faced with the danger of mines to the south, the tankers chose the nearly vertical drop on their left.

In the late 1950s, alpine skiers in the McCall area had just the Little Ski Hill, with its modest vertical drop. Bogus Basin near Boise was over three hours away (in good conditions) by vehicle, and Sun Valley was considerably farther. One of these McCall skiers was Boise agribusiness tycoon J.R. Simplot (1909-2008), who had a vacation home on Payette Lake. Financed by Simplot, the Brundage Mountain project took shape under the guidance of longtime McCall resident, Warren Brown (1912–2000) and ski legend Corey Engen (1916–2006). A former Olympian and instructor at the Little Ski Hill, Engen laid out the trails on the mountain during the summer of 1961. Favorable snowfall allowed Brundage to open on Thanksgiving on November 23, with a double chairlift, T-bar, and a rope tow. The ski area was primitive by modern standards: skiers were lifted to the top of the slope by one of two tow ropes or Poma lifts, and the slopes had about of vertical drop. As of 2020, the ski lodge, renamed Cabin 20, can be rented out by park visitors, while the Ski Slope Trail is a hiking trail that passes near the former ski slope. It begins at the beach parking lot, climbs Rattlesnake Mountain, and crosses Pennsylvania Route 504 near a historical marker for the Philadelphia–Erie Turnpike. The current Kephart Dam forming the lake on Black Moshannon Creek was built in 1974. On November 11, 1954, the park was officially named "Black Moshannon State Park" by the Pennsylvania Geographic Board. The CCC-built dam forming Black Moshannon Lake was replaced in the 1950s, and the current Kephart Dam was built in 1974. The park experienced major developments between 1971 and 1980. Time has brought changes to the park's CCC-built structures: the original picnic pavilion 6 collapsed under snow in 1994, the museum became the Environmental Learning Center, most of the latrines are gone, and six modern cabins and two deluxe cottages have been built in the Cabin Historic District.
