Vermicular is just now launching products in the U.S., but the company itself isn't new.

And in the years since launching, Vermicular has become one of the go-to pots for the well-heeled in Japan.

Still, Vermicular does come with a learning curve if you want to maximize its features (it also comes with a sizeable instruction manual).

Vermicular first started making its cast iron pots in 2008, as an attempt by its founders, Tomo and Kuni Hijikata, to turn around their family's dying manufacturing business.
|
|
"We simply wanted more people to enjoy the natural flavors and true essence of ingredients," says Tomo Hijikata, who co-founded Vermicular in 213 with his brother, Kuni.

For their differences, the massive success of the Instant Pot (the company is estimated to have sold more than 5 million units in three years) bodes well for Vermicular.

During a downturn in the economy, the Hijikata brothers began brainstorming how they could use the factory's primary manufacturing material—a lighter, stronger version of cast iron called vermicular graphite iron—for other products.

Cooking rice in the Musui-Kamado takes an hour compared to the Instant Pot's 10 minutes or a gas stove's 40 minutes, but Vermicular slow, low heat setting made every grain of rice feel like it was evenly cooked.

After three years and over 10,000 prototypes, the resulting 3.9-quart pot features a triple coating of cadmium-free enamel, a remarkably airtight seal and its namesake Vermicular graphite iron — a material that is difficult to manipulate but unmatched in its heat conductivity, lightness and durability.

On one end of the counter was the Instant Pot my mother got me for Christmas; on the other was another multi-tasking cooking device called the Vermicular Musui-Kamado, a Japanese gadget that just launched in the U.S. Both claim more or less the same thing, which is to make cooking more foolproof and food more delicious.

R. nomadica can cause very painful injuries to humans, since it has vermicular filaments, which are covered in venomous stinging cells, in the mouth arms. The R. nomadica had caused the largest numbers of envenomisations along the southern Levant coast. These jellyfishes are notorious for the large swarms they form in the summertime. The R. nomadica have caused a socioeconomic problem in Israel because of such outbreaks, during which they can release their venomous stinging cells.

The spiral sculpture shows a pronounced keel in front of the fasciole, on the upper part of the spire this keel may be more or less undulated. Males grow to a length of 112 cm, while females grow a bit larger at 120 cm. Its coloration is dark brownish bars, over the dorsal and lateral surfaces, and its dorsal and upper surfaced paired fins contain vermicular patterns. Perthite is typical of many granites. Myrmekite is a microscopic, vermicular (worm-like) intergrowth of quartz and sodium-rich plagioclase common in granite; myrmekite may form as alkali feldspar breaks down by exsolution and silicon is transported by fluids in cooling rocks. Iron-titanium oxides are extremely important, as they carry the predominant magnetic signatures of many rocks, and so they have played a major role in our understanding of plate tectonics. Other axial sculpture consists of rather irregular, more or less prominent incremental lines. The spiral sculpture consists of three or more somewhat obscure incised lines over the fasciole. On the basal side of the whorl are numerous rather distant, distinct spiral striae, subequal and nearly equidistant, the interspaces a little elevated and, on the canal, becoming threads. In addition to these there are on the middle of the whorls a quantity of irregular, oblique, somewhat vermicular, short incised lines, the interspaces between which are faintly beaded or reticulated by the short segments they intercept of the incremental lines.

The juvenile plumage resembles the adult, without the deep crimson ear patch and spotted belly. When observed in captivity, the white spots appeared first, beginning at the flank, with the red ear as the last characteristic to emerge. The vermicular bars of the adult plumage are absent at the nape and crown, and are more subdued on the rest of the upper parts. The black at the eyes and lores is absent or nearly so; the distinct red of the upper tail coverts and rump is duller, and underparts are lighter, buff coloured, and mottled rather than spotted.

The nuclear whorls are smooth, turgid, the subsequent turns carrying a rounded low keel, usually in front of the middle of the whorls forming the pire, the area between which and the suture is flatly impressed, the whorl in front gently rounded. Besides the lines of growth, both the fasciole and the anterior part of the whorl show indications under a lens of obscure regular distant spiral striae, and are also more or less marked with a faint vermicular reticulation of the surface. The sculpture consists of a strong spiral keel, peripheral on the spire with more or less nodulation (in cue specimen with fifteen small nodules on the penultimate whorl, but none on the body whorl; another has them obsolete on the spire), stronger on the earlier whorls when present, an obscure ridge in front of the suture, stronger on the earlier whorls. There is a faint spiral striation on the anal fasciole between the ridge and the keel. The whole surface is covered with a microscopic, close, impressed, vermicular network of fine lines anastomosing in every direction. On the body whorl the keel is well above the periphery.

About sixteen subequal, low, rounded protective ribs cross the upper whorls from in front of the fasciole with subequal interspaces and, on the body whorl, cease rather abruptly near the periphery. These ribs are not particularly strong or abrupt at their beginning. The spiral sculpture consists of six or eight faintly incised lines in front of the suture and on the fasciole, and beginning again on the base near the anterior ends of the ribs and continuous but not sharp over the base and siphonal canal. The band between the two series includes the ribbed part of the whorl and is sculptured with irregular, more or less retractive, oblique, vermicular, more or less punctate markings which override ribs and intervals with about the same strength as the spirals.
