The Free French, under General Charles de Gaulle, were determined to recover Indochina, though they offered Cambodia and the other Inchochinese protectorates a carefully circumscribed measure of self-government. Convinced that they had a "civilizing mission," they envisioned Indochina's participation in a French Union of former colonies that shared the common experience of French culture. Neither the urban professional elites nor the common people, however, were attracted by this arrangement. For Cambodians of practically all walks of life, the brief period of independence, from March to October 1945, had been enjoyable.

America House in Berlin In Germany, the US Occupation forces created the first of the postwar America Houses (called Amerikahäuser in German). The purpose of these Amerikahäuser was "to further the democratic reorientation of Germany, and to foster the assimilation of the German people into the society of peaceful nations..." with which the libraries would assist. With the official establishment of West Germany concurrent with the end of occupation, US Forces had created 28 Amerikahäuser as well as 136 associated reading rooms and bookmobiles, usually co-located with US military installations in Germany. Survey data in the late 1940s indicated that these centers reached urban professional men rather than the majority of the population which still lived in smaller towns and rural areas.

The two men's paths cross again while at the unemployment office, and later they finally meet and first speak to each other while seated side by side at the counter of a local diner as each considers his sudden loss of employment.

The focusing of attention on the sufferings and egalitarian communal traditions of the past, which was so prominent in Maoist rhetoric and replaced the future orientation of the 1950s, in part diverted attention from frustrations with the present. Tensions were most acute within the education system, which served, as it does in most societies, to sort children and select those who would go on to managerial and professional jobs. It was for this reason that the Cultural Revolution focused so negatively on the education system. Because of the rising competition in the schools and for the jobs to which schooling could lead, it became increasingly evident that those who did best in school were the children of the "bourgeoisie" and urban professional groups rather than the children of workers and peasants (see Education in the People's Republic of China).

Ostensibly simple but brave enough to give its audience the time to understand, ID knows what it's looking for, and you should seek it out." Jay Weissberg of Variety praised the concept, camerawork, editing and above all the acting performance of Geetanjali Thapa and said that, "Thapa, with very little acting experience, delivers a superb performance that captures the socially apathetic urban professional who believably awakens to her humanity, and heads far outside her comfort zone." Rowena Santos Aquino of Next Projection praised the film saying that, "A very immersive, distinct, and suspenseful work that addresses questions of identity and anonymity, the big city, communications technologies, and procedure, I.D. is close to breathtaking and impressive." and gave the film a score of 87 out of 100.

One party state era 1977 onward Widespread involvement of Seychellois in their own political affairs began in 1948 after World War II, when Britain granted suffrage to approximately 2,000 adult male property owners, who then elected four members to the Legislative Council that advised the governor. The winning candidates were drawn from a group known as the Seychelles Taxpayers' and Producers' Association (STPA), which represented the landed strata of society — known colloquially as the grands blancs (great whites). The STPA defended its members' interest in matters of crop marketing and other issues and was the principal political force in the nation until the early 1960s, when representatives of the small new urban professional and middle class began to win seats. Over the past 25 years, the Seychelles community in the EU has presented briefly the issues and reasons why those that had formed the Planters Association—Grand Blanc—had wanted to charter and plan a different course of history for Seychelles then under British Colonial Rule.
