Bacillus flexus is an aerobic, Gram-variable, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, oxidase positive bacteria. The endospores are ellipsoidal, located in central/paracentral, unswollen sporangia. In laboratory conditions, it produces opaque, creamish, raised margin colonies at 30 when incubated at 24–72 hrs. on Tryptic Soy Agar (TSA).

Epidendrum ruizianum belongs to the subgenus E. subg. Spathium Lindl., and as such is a sympodial plant with cylindrical, unswollen stems covered with close, imbricating sheathes which bear leaves on the upper part of the stem, and with the apical inflorescence erupting from an enlarged spathe. The stems grow to 90 cm tall.

All three species share cellular dimensions and morphology. All form oval spores located centrally in an unswollen sporangium. B. anthracis endospores, in particular, are highly resilient, surviving extremes of temperature, low-nutrient environments, and harsh chemical treatment over decades or centuries. The endospore is a dehydrated cell with thick walls and additional layers that form inside the cell membrane.

Stenolaena have perianth tubes that are straight and unswollen. This arrangement stood for over a hundred years, by which time a number of new species had been discovered, rendering Bentham's treatment "very inadequate and incomplete".

Anomalously the bullettes, where the connecting rings attach to the previous septal openings are unswollen. The slight endogastric curvature, as interpreted by Teichert and Glenister, suggests inclusion in the Cyrtogomphoceratidae, or ancestral Reudemannoceratidae; however endosiphuncular deposits are otherwise lacking in both these families. The organic deposits within the siphuncle suggests it is more likely Hectoceras is a member of the Westonoceratidae to which it has been assigned.

The fifth maxillary tooth is enlarged and resembles a canine. The skull of Hyloplesion superficially resembles that of the unrelated romeriid reptile Romeria in lateral view due to similarities in the pattern of the dermal bones and the hooked shape of the premaxilla. However, the skull differs from that of Romeria in dorsal view, as the parietals are much wider in Hyloplesion. The atlas arch also resembles those of romeriids and, unlike other microsaurs, is unswollen.

Shells enlarge moderately to the middle of the mature body chamber, then contract gently toward the aperture. The siphuncle in each is slightly removed from the ventral margin. The siphuncle of Tuyloceras, genotype T. percurvatum, starts off with slender, subquadrate segments with thick rings and swollen bullettes, but later in life the segments become expanded, rings thinner, and bullettes simple and unswollen. Lowoceras, genotype L. southamptonense, is like Tuylocrdas, but with endocones in the siphuncle like the later Discosorus.

Apothecia grow on bark-free wood, especially oak, part of which at least is stained greenish by the mycelium. The abundant paraphyses, which may be entwined, are 55–95 by 1.5–2 µm, filiform, and septate with an unswollen, unbent apex that often extends beyond the level of the asci tips. The species is distinguished from the closely related C. aeruginosum by having smaller spores. Although some authors have in the past failed to recognize any appreciable differences between the two species,Dennis RWG. (1956).

E. lacustre was placed in the subgenus E. subg. Spathium by Reichenbach; as is typical of plants in this subgenus, E. lacustre stems are unswollen and covered by sheathes which bear distichous leaves on the upper part of the stem, and end in one or more apical spathes, through which the inflorescence erupts.
