The American Association of Poison Control Centers manages a 24-hour hotline (1-800-222-1222), which is continuously staffed by pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and poison information specialists who have received dedicated training in the field of toxicology. Poison center services are accessible to all populations, including under-served and undocumented groups, those speaking one of 150 languages and those utilizing telecommunication devices for the hearing-impaired (TDD/TTY). More than 70 percent of all cases received by poison centers can be safely and effectively treated at home, without need for further medical care.

In 2009, Polii focused the season by playing only in the women's doubles with Nitya Krishinda Maheswari. Even though she fell in the early stage of Europe tour in All England and Swiss Open, she reached in to the finals of Singapore Open, she beat the world number one Chin Eei Hui and Wong Pei Tty from Malaysia in the quarter-finals, also ninth-placed Lena Frier Kristiansen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl from Denmark in the semi-finals. In May, she alongside Indonesia team finished as the semi-finalists in Sudirman Cup held in Guangzhou. Polii and Maheswari played at the World Championships in Hyderabad, India, as 13th seeded.

A telecommunications device for the deaf (TDD) is a teleprinter, an electronic device for text communication over a telephone line, that is designed for use by persons with hearing or speech difficulties. Other names for the device include teletypewriter (TTY), textphone (common in Europe), and minicom (United Kingdom). The typical TDD is a device about the size of a typewriter or laptop computer with a QWERTY keyboard and small screen that uses an LED, LCD, or VFD screen to display typed text electronically. In addition, TDDs commonly have a small spool of paper on which text is also printedold versions of the device had only a printer and no screen.

The mechanical teleprinter was replaced by a "glass tty", a keyboard and screen emulating the teleprinter. "Smart" terminals permitted additional functions, such as cursor movement over the entire screen, or local editing of data on the terminal for transmission to the computer. As the microcomputer revolution replaced the traditionalminicomputer + terminalstime sharing architecture, hardware terminals were replaced by terminal emulators — PC software that interpreted terminal signals sent through the PC's serial ports. Bejar said "I'd just give the whole thing to John and have him just blow it up, flesh it out -- swap out my s--tty fake drums for cool drums, and play bass on it, and make the synths cool and not generic, and make the songs move," Most of the finished tracks on the album feature the first or seconds takes of the vocals that Bejar recorded. Bejar initially never planned to use the vocal recordings, calling them "the most piss-poor things that I've done since" the Destroyer album We'll Build Them a Golden Bridge (1995) which he recorded on 4-track.

Title IV of the ADA amended the landmark Communications Act of 1934 primarily by adding section . This section requires that all telecommunications companies in the U.S. take steps to ensure functionally equivalent services for consumers with disabilities, notably those who are deaf or hard of hearing and those with speech impairments. When Title IV took effect in the early 1990s, it led to the installation of public teletypewriter (TTY) machines and other TDD (telecommunications devices for the deaf). Title IV also led to the creation, in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, of what was then called dual- party relay services and now are known as Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS), such as STS relay.

There is also now the ability to answer text messages at some PSAPs, which is useful in areas where weak signal strength due to distance from the nearest cell site causes fringe reception, resulting in blocked or dropped calls. Since SMS messages only require an instant to send, a brief peak in radio propagation (such as due to changing cloud cover) is often enough to get a message sent. Text messages are also useful for the deaf or speech disabled, as it does not require a TTY device.

Partnered with Greysia Polii in the women's doubles, surprisingly, the first time they played together, they beat Korean pair Lee Kyung-won and Ha Jung-eun, 21-14, 21-12. At the 2010 All England Super Series, they reached the quarterfinals after defeating 4th-seeded Malaysian pair Wong Pei Tty and Chin Eei Hui in straight sets. In the quarterfinals, they played a rubber set against Pan Pan and Tian Qing from China but lost 23-25, 21-17, 17-21.

Early user terminals connected to computers were electromechanical teleprinters/teletypewriters (TeleTYpewriter, TTY), such as the Teletype Model 33, originally used for telegraphy or the Friden Flexowriter; early Teletypes were typically configured as Keyboard Send-Receive (KSR) or Automatic Send-Receive (ASR), the latter including a paper tape reader and punch. This led to the use of the current loop interface that was already used in telegraphy, as well as a thriving market for surplus machines for computer use. Custom-designs keyboard/printer terminals that came later included the IBM 2741 (1965) and the DECwriter (1970). Respective top speeds of teletypes, IBM 2741 and LA30 were 10, 15 and 30 characters per second.

Strictly speaking, in Unices a terminal device comprises the underlying tty device driver, responsible for the physical control of the device hardware via I/O instructions and handling device interrupt requests for character input and output, and the line discipline. A line discipline is independent of the actual device hardware, and the same line discipline can be used for a terminal concentrator device responsible for multiple controlling terminals as for a pseudoterminal. In fact, the line discipline (or, in the case of BSD, AIX, and other systems, line disciplines) are the same across all terminal devices. It is the line discipline that is responsible for local echo, line editing, processing of input modes, processing of output modes, and character mapping.

Caller ID spoofing, social engineering, TTY, prank calls, and phone phreaking techniques may be variously combined by swatting perpetrators. 911 systems (including computer telephony systems and human operators) have been tricked by calls placed from cities hundreds of miles away from the location of the purported call, or even from other countries. The caller typically places a 911 call using a spoofed phone number (so as to hide the fraudulent caller's real location) with the goal of tricking emergency authorities into responding with a SWAT team to a fabricated emergency. Swatting is linked to the action of doxing, which is obtaining and broadcasting, often via the Internet, the address and details of an individual with an intent to harass or endanger them.

Sign language researchers Ceil Lucas and Clayton Valli have noted several differences between the language contact arising between two sign languages and the contact phenomena that arise between a signed and an oral language. When two sign languages meet, the expected contact phenomena occurs: lexical borrowing, foreign "accent", interference, code switching, pidgins, creoles and mixed systems. However, between a sign language and an oral language, lexical borrowing and code switching also occur, but the interface between the oral and signed modes produces unique phenomena: fingerspelling (see below), fingerspelling/sign combination, initialisation, CODA talk (see below), TTY conversation, mouthing, and contact signing. Long-term contact with oral languages has generated a large influence on the vocabulary and grammar of sign languages.

One effect of this is that TTY-like 'devices' could be emulated without requiring a kernel-based pseudo terminal facility. An example of where a handler saved the day was in ISC's diskless workstation support, where a bug in the implementation meant that using named pipes on the workstation could induce undesirable resource locking on the fileserver. A handler was created on the workstation to field accesses to the afflicted named pipes until the appropriate kernel fixes could be developed. This handler required approximately 5 kilobytes of code to implement, an indication that a non-trivial handler did not need to be large. ISC also received the right to manufacture DIAB's DS90-10 and DS90-20 machines as its file servers.

The distribution of signals to process groups forms the basis of job control employed by shell programs. The TTY device driver incorporates a notion of a foreground process group, to which it sends signals generated by keyboard interrupts, notably SIGINT (“interrupt”, ), SIGTSTP (“terminal stop”, ), and SIGQUIT (“quit”, ). It also sends the SIGTTIN and SIGTTOU signals to any processes that attempt to read from or write to the terminal and that are not in the foreground process group. The shell, in turn, partitions the command pipelines that it creates into process groups, and controls what process group is the foreground process group of its controlling terminal, thus determining what processes (and thus what command pipelines) may perform I/O to and from the terminal at any given time.

The Emergency Call Service is operated by Telstra and overseen by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, and is intended only for use in life- threatening or time-critical emergencies. Other emergency numbers in Australia are 112 for GSM mobile and satellite phones, which is answered by a 000 operator and 106 for TDD textphones. 000 was also the emergency number in Denmark and Finland until the introduction of the 112 number in 1993 and in Norway until 1986, when the emergency numbers diverted to 001 for fire brigade, 002 for police and 003 for ambulance.

On August 6, 2016, at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Japan qualified first for team all-around (AA) finals, extending 2015’s WC success. They solidified team gold two days later in the event finals at Rio Olympic Arena with total of 274.094. Just 19 years, 11 months and 15 days old, Shirai contributed to the gold medal with top floor and vault scores of 16.133 and 15.633, but did not perform on another apparatus at these Games. Strength of his scores—began with the finals’ best TTY stuck landing, only to better it with “one of his best” floor routines (0.533 above next highest)—enhanced his team mentally to get better with each routine.

Some Unix systems, including Linux, have conventions which encode within the request number the size of the data to be transferred to/from the device driver, the direction of the data transfer and the identity of the driver implementing the request. Regardless of whether such a convention is followed, the kernel and the driver collaborate to deliver a uniform error code (denoted by the symbolic constant `ENOTTY`) to an application which makes a request of a driver which does not recognise it. The mnemonic `ENOTTY` (traditionally associated with the textual message "Not a typewriter") derives from the earliest systems that incorporated an `ioctl` call, where only the teletype (`tty`) device raised this error. Though the symbolic mnemonic is fixed by compatibility requirements, some modern systems more helpfully render a more general message such as "Inappropriate device control operation" (or a localization thereof).

It has a bubble memory option and various programming modules, including EPROM, and Intel 8048 and 8051 programming modules which are plugged into the side, replacing stand-alone device programmers. In October 2018, the Seattle Police Department took a three-pronged approach to combating swatting: educating 911 dispatchers to identify potential swatting calls, ensuring responding officers are aware of the potential for a hoax situation, and creating an opt-in registry for people who fear that they might become victims of swatting, such as journalists, celebrities, or live streamers. Using the registry, these people can provide cautionary information to the police, which will inform officers responding to potential swatting attempts targeted at the victim's address. Security reporter Brian Krebs recommends that police departments take extra care when responding to calls received at their non-emergency numbers, or through text-to-speech services (TTY), since these methods are often employed by out-of-area swatters who cannot connect to the regional 911 center. In September 2019, the Seattle Police Department formed the Swatting Mitigation Advisory Committee, a group of subject matter experts, both community and police representatives.

The university was founded in 1965 as a branch of Helsinki University of Technology and became an independent university status in 1972. The Student Union of Tampere University of Technology (Tampereen teknillisen yliopiston ylioppilaskunta, TTYY) was also established alongside the university. In 2003, the university changed its Finnish name from TTKK (Tampereen teknillinen korkeakoulu) to TTY (Tampereen teknillinen yliopisto) so that the Finnish name would be closer to the English name and to distinguish itself from polytechnics that are not universities in the meaning of the Humboldtian university ideal or in the meaning of the Finnish law. As a part of the Finnish university reform, Tampere University of Technology chose to become one of the two Finnish universities operating as foundations in the beginning of 2010.

In 1987, Wang developed a new typesetting system in conjunction with Arlington MA-based Texet Corp. The system used Xerox printers and UNIX workstations from Sun, but the product vanished before coming to market, partially because few Wang employees could use or support UNIX. UNIX ran on the VSInteractive Systems first ported IN/ix (their IBM360 version of SYS5 UNIX) to run in a VSOS Virtual machine circa 1985, and then Wang engineers completed the port so that it ran "native" on the VS hardware soon thereafterbut performance was always sub-par as UNIX was never a good fit for the inherently batch-mode nature of the VS hardware, and the line-at-a-time processing approach taken by the VS workstations; indeed, the workstation code had to be largely rewritten to bundle up each keystroke into a frame to be sent back to the host when running UNIX so that "tty" style processing could be implemented. PACE, which offered its data dictionary, excellent referential integrity, and speedy application development, was in the process of being ported to UNIX under the name OPEN Pace.

Currently, there is only one top-rated I (0.9) skill for men, which is the Miyachi on high bar, or double-twisting straight Kovac release, by Hidetaka Miyachi of Japan while there is also only one top-rated J (1.0) skill for women, which is the Biles 2 on floor, or triple-twisting double (tucked) back somersault, by Simone Biles of the United States. Due to the nature of apparatus, the vault event's difficulty scores for men are rated from 1.6 to 6.0 while for women are from 2.0 to 6.4. Currently, there are four men's vaults with the top rate of 6.0, but only two women's vaults with the top rate of 6.4, which are the Produnova, or handspring double front somersault, by Yelena Produnova of Russia, and Biles, or "half on–double full off", by Biles again. Difficulty score of the Yurchenko triple twist (or triple-twisting Yurchenko [TTY]) on women's vault has also earlier been assessed ahead to a value of 6.8, and will receive eponymous naming as soon as it is successfully completed (it has already been attempted) in competition.

In October 2013, shortly after turning 17, Shirai was the youngest man selected to compete at the 2013 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, one of two major FIG-organised international events, for the first time, in Antwerp, Belgium. He with Kim Hee Hoon of South Korea successfully completed a same new skill then—now officially named the Shirai or Shirai-Kim on vault, which is a Yurchenko (again MAG’s platform-entry skill with a RO–BH onto table and naming credit given to former Soviet gymnast Natalia Yurchenko at a 1982 Moscow competition) triple twist, or TTY—automatically qualifying its adoption of two gymnasts’ names. Shirai and Tuan Dat Nguyen of Vietnam likewise successfully completed another same new skill too on floor—the Shirai or Shirai-Nguyen on floor, or quadruple-twisting back layout. Both skills took the names of two athletes officially, but each skill also evolved separately to have its name shortened over time by many in practice to only the Shirai, owing a lot to Shirai first qualifying for these two individual event finals, and then also finishing well in them—Kim and Nguyen did not qualify for their own event finals.

Saputra and his brother, Hendra Wijaya, joined the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) in 2000 and both became Singapore citizens after five years. He won a silver medal, along with his brother and also partner, Hendra Wijaya, in the men's doubles, and bronze with Li Yujia in the mixed doubles at the 2007 Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand. Saputra represented Singapore at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, where he competed in the mixed doubles. Playing with Li Yujia, he defeated Kenya's Victor Odera and Irene Kerimah, Canada's Mike Beres and Valerie Loker, and Australia's Travis Denney and Kate Wilson- Smith in the preliminary rounds, before losing out the semi-final match to English pair Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms, with a score of 21–19, 14–21, and 17–21. Despite their semi-final loss, Saputra and Li managed to beat the neighbouring Malaysian duo Koo Kien Keat and Wong Pei Tty for the bronze medal victory, attaining a three-set score of 21–14, 21–23, and 21–6. Saputra also qualified for the mixed doubles at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, by placing thirteenth and granting an entry as one of the top 15 seeded teams from the Badminton World Federation's ranking list.

More than every male gymnast, six eponymous skills—three each on floor (FX) and vault (VT)—were officially named to Shirai, automatically or with petition, as he was the first to successfully perform them at major international competitions. All six original elements are the (1) Shirai or Shirai-Nguyen on floor—quadruple-twisting (back) straight, (2) Shirai 2 on floor—(straight) triple twist forwards, (3) Shirai 3 on floor—triple-twisting double (back) straight, (4) Shirai or Shirai-Kim on vault—Yurchenko (vault family skills within men’s artistic gymnastics [MAG] via round-off [RO]–back handspring [BH] entry on platform) triple twist, or triple-twisting Yurchenko (TTY), (5) Shirai 2 on vault—3½-twisting Yurchenko, and (6) Shirai 3 on vault—RO–full-twisting BH (Scherbo) on into (straight back) double twist off, or aka a “full on–double full off”. Each of the difficulty score (D-score) value—F (0.6), F (0.6), H (0.8), 5.6, 6.0 and 5.4 respectively—was assigned ahead by the body governing all disciplines of competitive gymnastics, International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG), which has also included MAG and women’s artistic gymnastics (WAG), and made effective in the 2017–2020 Code of Points (CoP).
