In 211, Gordon co-curated a show called "After Afropolitan," inspired by the widely circulated term "Afropolitan," which she says was popularized by author Taiye Selasi in her book Ghana Must Go. In an email to Hyperallergic, Gordon said: When I developed the conceptual scope of the Nou La We Reach project and made the choice to use the word — in order to align the project with analysis and conversations that had been had around the term "Afropolitan" as inspired by my previous project "After Afropolitan" — I did not know about CaribBEING's work with the word "Caribpolitan" so it would be false to affirm the idea that the Nou La We Reach project was influenced by or stealing from or transgressing against CaribBEING by using the word.

A reporter for The Nation, Lewis Gannett, who went to the Rhineland to investigate the allegations found them to be mostly false. Gannett found that there had been cases of rape of German women and girls by the Senegalese, but the total number was far smaller than what had been alleged by Morel; that white French troops had also raped German women, a matter that did not interest Morel very much; and that in rape cases "the French have inflicted severe punishment upon all soldiers guilty of transgressing against the civil population". A study done by the British journalist J. Ellis Baker published in the July 1921 edition of Current History found that between 1918-1921 there had been a total of 72 creditable allegations of criminal conduct made against "colored troops" in the Rhineland, and of which only 9 concerned allegations of rape. Baker's study also listed 96 allegations of criminal conduct which had been judged "doubtful" and 59 which were found to be "unjustified".

There are many studies of sexual orientation discrimination on college campuses. McCreery states that this heteronormative hierarchy carries over to the workplace, where gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals face discrimination such as anti-homosexual hiring policies or workplace discrimination that often leaves "lowest hierarchy" individuals such as transsexual people vulnerable to the most overt discrimination and unable to find work. Applicants and current employees can be legally passed over or fired for being non-heterosexual or perceived as non-heterosexual in many countries, such as the case with chain restaurant Cracker Barrel, which garnered national attention in 1991 after they fired an employee for being openly lesbian, citing their policy that employees with "sexual preferences that fail to demonstrate normal heterosexual values were inconsistent with traditional American values." Workers such as the fired employee and others, such as effeminate male waiters (allegedly described as the true targets), were legally fired by work policies "transgressing" against "normal" heteronormative culture.
