A post office was first established at Whiting in 1871. Whiting was incorporated in 1895. It was named after a trainman who was killed in a crash there. Whiting was once a sundown town that prohibited African Americans from entering the city.

A brakeman is sometimes seen as an assistant to the conductor in a train's operations. In passenger service, the brakeman (called trainman or assistant conductor) collects revenue, may operate door "through switches" for specific platforming needs, makes announcements, and operates trainline door open and close controls when required to assist the conductor. A passenger service trainman is often required to qualify as a conductor after 1 to 2 years experience.

The publication was a monthly published by the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen In 1913 and again in 1926 he was on the Board of Arbitration of the Interstate Commerce Commission.

On February 5, 1926 Moscow – Riga train was assaulted between the Ikšķile and Salaspils station. Armed men required the trainman to show courier's compartment and attacked the Soviet trade representative Pecherskiy. Nette and his partner Johann Mahmastal (1891—1942) took their guns but failed to close the door. Nette shot first and hits one attacker, but was instantly killed by a headshot.

Clarence V. Monin was born around 1941 in Louisville, Kentucky. He became a trainman on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N;) in 1964. He was promoted to L&N; Locomotive Engineer in 1966, and joined the BLE that year. In 1977 Monin became Senior Vice-General Chairman and in 1978 General Chairman of the BLE General Committee of Adjustment for the L&N;, holding office until 1985.

On July 12, 1966, a runaway Southern Pacific locomotive (or according to some accounts, a flatcar carrying a steam-powered crane) suddenly derailed and crushed several cages in the Africa U.S.A. compound, killing a railroad employee. On 3 December 1936, James Edward Dodd, an amateur prospector and CNR trainman from Port Arthur, Ontario, sold a cache of iron fragments to Charles Trick Currelly, curator of the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) for a price of $500 CAD.Logan 2003: pp. 96–97. The cache consisted of a broken sword, an axehead, and a bar of unknown use. Dodd claimed that he had unearthed the fragments while prospecting for gold, southwest of Beardmore, Ontario, on 24 May 1931.

The freight train was travelling at while the Super Continental was travelling at . The engineer and a trainman on the freight train were both killed; there was at least one report of looting among the passengers, but many of the children aboard the train stayed asleep through the accident. On August 8, 1980, the eastbound Super Continental derailed twelve cars at a location about east of Jasper, Alberta. The train remained upright with only one broken arm reported for personal injuries.

His family removed to Oswego, New York, in 1870. He attended the public schools, and was employed as a railway trainman in 1885, served as legislative representative of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen of New York State from 1896 to 1914 and again from February 1915 until January 1, 1933, and served as referee for the New York State Labor Bureau in 1914 and 1915. He was an alderman of Oswego in 1908 and 1909; and Mayor of Oswego from 1910 to 1911, and from 1918 to 1921. He was a delegate to the 1920, 1924 and 1932 Democratic National Conventions.

William S. Andrews of Syracuse was a 69-year-old judge, noted for his scholarship, who had been on the Court of Appeals since 1917. The son of Charles Andrews, a former Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, William Andrews is best remembered today because he wrote an opinion in Palsgraf. In that dissent, he was joined by Judges Frederick E. Crane and John F. O'Brien. Andrews began with a brief recitation of facts: that a railroad employee had negligently dislodged the package, the contents of which the trainman was unaware, and the subsequent explosion broke the scale and injured the plaintiff, "an intending passenger".

In The Matrix Revolutions and Enter the Matrix, it is explained that Kamala and Rama Kandra, the parents of Sati, traded with the Merovingian, giving the Oracle's termination code in exchange for their daughter's passage into the Matrix as an Exile via the Trainman. In reality, Mary Alice played the Oracle because Gloria Foster died of complications from diabetes before her role in Matrix Revolutions was shot. Neo meets the Oracle in two different locations over the course of the film series. In The Matrix, he finds her in an apartment filled with various "potentials"—children whose ability to control their surroundings suggests that they may be The One.

Peter V. "Pete" Cacchione (November 1, 1897 – November 6, 1947) was an American communist labor leader who was elected to the New York City Council in 1941. He was born to Italian-American immigrant family in Syracuse, New York on November 1, 1897 and grew up in Sayre, Pennsylvania. He became director of sports activities for the Catholic Welfare Council, later becoming a steel worker in Bethlehem, a street car conductor, riveter and later a trainman on the Lackawanna Railroad. According to fellow communist city councilman Benjamin J. Davis and newspaper accounts, Cacchione served in World War I.Tamiment Library/Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives Guide to the Peter V.
