In the late 19th century, Choctaws suffered almost daily from violent crimes, murders, thefts and assaults from whites and from other Choctaws. Historians such as Wood Gray, Jennifer Weber and Kenneth Stampp have argued that it represented a traditionalistic element alarmed at the rapid modernization of society sponsored by the Republican Party and that it looked back to Jacksonian democracy for inspiration. Weber argues that the Copperheads damaged the Union war effort by opposing conscription (the "draft"), encouraging desertion and forming conspiracies, but other historians say that the draft was already in disrepute and that the Republicans greatly exaggerated the conspiracies for partisan reasons.

Wijesinghe has been known for his upright stance on supporting fundamental rights of the minority Tamils in Sri Lanka. He has often voiced his opinion, against a vehemently traditionalistic and nationalistic backdrop, on issues such as sexual freedom, homosexual rights, legalisation of abortion and prostitution as well as the right of the individuals to commit suicide. His contribution in the political sphere was deeply felt during the period of 1980–1990 when the Sri Lankan youth were seeking an alternative to the open economic system due to its emerging harmful effects on society as a whole. The post-Marxist and postmodern political theories which Wijesinghe propagated that time became a seminal force in the emergence of various political movements, including the later divisions of the leftist political party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).

In addition to her many peer-reviewed publications and contributions to edited volumes, Oi has been the sole author of two books about Chinese political economy. Her first book, State and Peasant in Contemporary China: The Political Economy of Village Government, was published in 1989. State and Peasant in Contemporary China arose from Oi's PhD dissertation at the University of Michigan, combining research interviews and field work to study the interaction between peasant leaders and state officials, and in particular the relationship between power at the level of villages and higher regional powers. Summarizing Oi's findings, Edward Friedman wrote that she "concludes that the form of politics during China's imperial era, republican period, Maoist rule, and the present post-Mao reforms remained traditional, that is, personalistic, based on clientalistic relations," and that "Oi locates the cause of the traditionalistic continuity not in culture but in structural circumstances".

The idea of Iran as a religious, cultural, and ethnic reality goes back as far as the end of the 6th century B.C.E. As a political idea, it first appeared in the twenties of the third century C.E. as an essential feature of Sassanian propaganda. Third-century Iran was shaken by a conflict between universalism and nationalism that was most clearly manifested in the religious and cultural sphere. The outcome of this conflict is well known: the traditionalistic and nationalistic impulses gained the upper hand, and Manichaean universalism succumbed to the nationalism of the Zoroastrian Magi. Iranian identity, which up to that point had essentially consisted of cultural and religious nature, assumed a definite political value, placing Persia and the Persians at the center of the Ērān-šahr, in other words, at the center of a state based on the twin powers of throne and altar and sustained by an antiquarian and archaizing ideology.
