The Bruce Museum promotes the understanding and appreciation of Art and Science to enrich the lives of all people. The museum has permanent exhibits featuring the natural sciences in regional and global perspective focusing on geology, paleontology, archaeology, local Native Americans, natural history, and the effects of man on the areas around Greenwich. There are several display cases with mineral specimens, including a touchable meteorite, large mineral crystals from around the world and minerals that glow in black light. Part of a Northeast woodland wigwam has been created as a seating area to learn about Native Americans, and there is a model of an archaeological dig.

Shalit's Touch Foundation created an exhibit of touchable lifecasts of the faces of celebrities and other notable individuals, for the purpose of making those faces accessible to the blind and visually impaired, which toured American museums from 1990 to 2000, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Memphis, Tennessee. Shalit was a member of the Board of Trustees at the College of Santa Fe from 1990 to 1995. She co-founded V-Day with Ensler and served as its first executive director. V-day is a non-profit organization that distributes funds to grassroots, national, and international organizations and programs that work to stop violence against women and girls.

As a headline for most of STEIM's instrumental developments it can apply that "Touch is crucial in communicating with the new electronic performance art technologies". As in traditional musical instruments, it is believed here that also in contemporary developments the physical touch of a musician contains essential aesthetic factors. These qualities tend to get lost in the non-realtime use of studio technology, in which the process of music production gets rather rational but bodily involved. The Touch philosophy — which can be considered as STEIM's interpretation of the widely used term interactivity — theoretically subsumes several stages of STEIM's developments, from the analogue touchable "Crackle" surfaces in the 1970s to today's experimental Gestural MIDI Interfaces.

In 1958, one of the earliest studies of the relationship between social differences and dialect differences was published by John Gumperz, who studied the speech patterns in Khalapur, a small, highly stratified village in India. In all, the village has 31 castes, ranging from Brahmins and Rajputs at the top, to Chamars and Bhangis at the bottom, and 90% of the overall population was Hindu, with the remaining 10% Muslim. Gumperz observed that the different castes were distinguished both phonologically and lexically, with each caste having a vocabulary specific to their subculture. Remarkably, the speech differences between Hindus and Muslims "are of the same order as those between individual touchable castes and certainly much less important than the variation between touchables and untouchables".

In 1966 she founded a free museum for sculpture called the Museo Escultório, next to her husband’s clinic. She maintained this museum for forty years with her earnings from teaching. Today it is the Museo Escultórico Geles Cabrera, the first museum dedicated to sculpture from the Americas, but it is practically unknown. It contains a permanent collection of Mexican sculpture in various materials including sixty pieces by Cabrera from 1948. Cabrera describes the museum as “the communication of art and sculpture to the people, to the community. Here there are no signs that say “don’t touch.” One of the touchable sculptures is a swing, which when ridden produces a human heartbeat. Many of the museum’s visitors are children coming as part of classes from school.

Vellya Paapen is an example of an Untouchable so grateful to the Touchable caste that he is willing to kill his son, Velutha, when he discovers that Velutha has broken the most important rule of class segregation—that there be no inter-caste sexual relations. In part, this reflects how many Untouchables have internalized caste segregation. Nearly all of the relationships in the novel are somehow colored by cultural and caste tension, including the twins' relationship with Sophie, Chacko's relationship with Margaret, Pappachi's relationship with his family, and Ammu's relationship with Velutha. Characters such as Baby Kochamma and Pappachi are the most rigid and vicious in their attempts to uphold that social code, while Ammu and Velutha are the most unconventional and daring in unraveling it.

Farouk El-Baz (, Pronunciation: ) (born January 2, 1938) is an Egyptian American space scientist and geologist, who worked with NASA in the scientific exploration of the Moon and the planning of the Apollo program. He was a leading geologist on the program, responsible for studying the geology of the Moon, the selection of landing sites for the Apollo missions, and the training of astronauts in lunar observations and photography. He played a key role in the Apollo 11 Moon landing mission, and later Apollo missions. He also came up with the idea of touchable Moon rocks at a museum, inspired by his childhood pilgimage to Mecca where he touched the Black Stone (which in Islam is believed to be sent down from the heavens).

In 1998 author Keith Richardson wrote a book about Lakey's angel project, entitled Andy Lakey's Psychomanteum, published by Ventura Press. Lakey typically used a bas relief technique, where the heavy, mixed media and paint is raised texturally from the canvas surface, This three-dimensionality makes these paintings "touchable art." Shortly thereafter, an art critic saw one of his paintings and Lakey became the subject of a story by a local ABC TV affiliate about art for the blind in San Diego. ABC News commentator Peter Jennings of World News Tonight saw a local news story on Lakey’s art show in aid of the blind, and ran the story nationally; Jennings also requested one of the paintings from the artist, which was donated to the charity Lighthouse For The Blind in New York City.
