Ancient Balkh or Bactria was an integral part of Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex, and was occupied by Indo-Iranians. In the 5th century BCE, it became a province of the Achaemenian Empire and later became part of the Seleucid Empire. About 250 BC Diodotus (Theodotus), governor of Bactria under the Seleucidae, declared his independence, and commenced the history of the Greco-Bactrian dynasties, which succumbed to Parthian and nomadic movements about 126 BC. After this came a Buddhist era which has left its traces in the gigantic sculptures at Bamian and the rock-cut topes of Haibak. The district was devastated by Genghis Khan, and has never since fully recovered its prosperity.

Jibacoa is a hilltown surrounded by the Escambray Mountains, located near the southeastern shore of the Hanabanilla Lake and the Jibacoa Dam (Presa Jibacoa), and 39 km from the resort village of El Salto del Hanabanilla. The Jibacoa River flows to the east of the settlement and, next to it, is located a karst cave named Cueva del Guanajo. It lies near the border point of Villa Clara Province with the ones of Cienfuegos and Sancti Spíritus, and is crossed by the provincial highway 152, linking Manicaragua (17 km north) to Trinidad (44 km south), through the nature reserve of Topes de Collantes. A secondary mountain road, 10 km long, links it to the village of Güinía de Miranda.

Valley of the sugar mills at the south skirts of Escambray Mountains Topes de Collantes, literally Collantes’ Highs, almost above sea level, along with Potrerillo peak, and tallest San Juan peak, are located in the Escambray range. These mountains are shared by the three central provinces of the island; Villa Clara Province to the north, Cienfuegos Province and Sancti Spiritus Province to the west and east respectively.
