Her first ever gig was Destiny's Child, her tweens were guided by Avril Lavigne—"she was a huge influence on me as an 11-year-old, I felt like I finally had a female role-model who's a grungy tomboy"—and later artists like Fleet Foxes, Laura Veirs, Warpaint, and The Shins.

"In the past, whether you were a straight woman or a gay woman, it was like either you were supposed to be hypermasculine or hyperfeminine," said TJ, who, at 50, embodies a somewhat unlikely transit from outcast tomboy teenager subjected by family to aversion therapy to a beauty hotly in demand both for great looks, as may be expected, but equally for a smart-talking renegade attitude.
A close cousin to the rom-com quirky girl (as seen in anything starring Zooey Deschanel) and the manic pixie dream girl (coined in 2005 by critic Nathan Rubin, who based the term on Kristen Dunst's character in Elizabethtown), the cool girl is basically a hot tomboy who loves sex and sports, can hang with the boys, and would never pressure a guy to turn a casual affair into something more.
