On the other hand, we still have \tilde\psi(\Omega) = \zeta_0 (because \Omega \in C(\alpha,\rho) for all \rho so the extra condition does not come in play). Note in particular that \tilde\psi, unlike \psi, is not monotonic, nor is it continuous. Despite these changes, the \tilde\psi function also defines a system of ordinal notations up to the Bachmann–Howard ordinal: the notations, and the conditions for canonicalness, are slightly different (for example, \psi(\Omega+1+\alpha) = \tilde\psi(\tilde\psi(\Omega)+\alpha) for all \alpha less than the common value \psi(\Omega2) = \tilde\psi(\Omega+1)).

A tilde in front of a single quantity can mean "approximately", "about" or "of the same order of magnitude as." In written mathematical logic, the tilde represents negation: "~p" means "not p", where "p" is a proposition. In other word, there exist an element w of the Weyl group W such that :\lambda=w\cdot\tilde\lambda where \cdot is the affine action of the Weyl group. The Verma module W_\lambda is called singular, if there is no dominant weight on the affine orbit of λ. In this case, there exists a weight \tilde\lambda so that \tilde\lambda+\delta is on the wall of the fundamental Weyl chamber (δ is the sum of all fundamental weights).
Let M be a (G,X)-manifold which is connected (as a topological space). The developing map is a map from the universal cover \tilde M to X which is only well-defined up to composition by an element of G. A developing map is defined as follows: fix p\in \tilde M and let q \in \tilde M be any other point, \gamma a path from p to q, and \varphi: U \to X (where U is a small enough neighbourhood of p) a map obtained by composing a chart of M with the projection \tilde M \to M. We may use analytic continuation along \gamma to extend \varphi so that its domain includes q. Since \tilde M is simply connected the value of \varphi(q) thus obtained does not depend on the original choice of \gamma, and we call the (well-defined) map \varphi: \tilde M \to X a developing map for the (G,X)-structure. It depends on the choice of base point and chart, but only up to composition by an element of G.
The Zarma alphabet uses the following letters: a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, ɲ, ŋ, o, p, r, s, t, u, w, y, z. Nasal vowels are written with a tilde or a following or . Also, v may be used in a few words of foreign origin, but many Zarma cannot pronounce it.
In Modern Spanish, the tilde is used only with and . Both were conveniently assigned to a single mechanical typebar, which sacrificed a key that was felt to be less important, usually the — key. Portuguese, however, uses not but for (almost) the same phoneme. It uses the tilde on the vowels and .

Before a number the tilde can mean 'approximately; '~42' means 'approximately 42'. When used with currency symbols that precede the number (national conventions differ), the tilde precedes the symbol, thus for example '~$10' means 'about ten dollars'. The symbols ≈ (almost equal to) and ≅ (approximately equal to) are among the other symbols used to express approximation.
On Unix-like operating systems (including AIX, BSD, Linux and macOS), tilde normally indicates the current user's home directory. For example, if the current user's home directory is , then the command is equivalent to , , or . This convention derives from the Lear-Siegler ADM-3A terminal in common use during the 1970s, which happened to have the tilde symbol and the word "Home" (for moving the cursor to the upper left) on the same key. When prepended to a particular username, the tilde indicates that user's home directory (e.g.
Carta marina showing Finnish economy, with the captions and abbreviated Later, it was used to make abbreviations in medieval Latin documents. When an or followed a vowel, it was often omitted, and a tilde (physically, a small ) was placed over the preceding vowel to indicate the missing letter; this is the origin of the use of tilde to indicate nasalization (compare the development of the umlaut as an abbreviation of .) The practice of using the tilde over a vowel to indicate omission of an or continued in printed books in French as a means of reducing text length until the 17th century. It was also used in Portuguese, and Spanish. The tilde was also used occasionally to make other abbreviations, such as over the letter , making , to signify the word que ("that").
In lexicography, the latter kind of tilde and the swung dash, , are used in dictionaries to indicate the omission of the entry word.
If X is a continuous process and W is Brownian motion under measure P then : \tilde W_t =W_t - \left [ W, X \right]_t is Brownian motion under Q. The fact that \tilde W_t is continuous is trivial; by Girsanov's theorem it is a Q local martingale, and by computing the quadratic variation :\left[\tilde W \right]_t= \left[W_t, W_t\right] - 2 \left[W_t, [W, X]_t\right] + \left W, X]_t, [W, X]_t \right] = \left [ W \right]_t = t it follows by Lévy's characterization of Brownian motion that this is a Q Brownian motion.
Electronic states are also often identified by an empirical single-letter label. The ground state is labelled X, excited states of the same multiplicity (i.e., having the same spin quantum number) are labelled in ascending order of energy with capital letters A, B, C...; excited states having different multiplicity than the ground state are labelled with lower-case letters a, b, c... In polyatomic molecules (but not in diatomic) it is customary to add a tilde (e.g. \tilde X, \tilde a) to these empirical labels to prevent possible confusion with symmetry labels based on group representations.
The Chapman–Jouguet condition is where Rayleigh line is tangent to the Hugoniot curve. If \gamma=1.4 (diatomic gas without the vibrational mode excitation), the interval is 1/6\leq \tilde v\leq 2\alpha + 6, in other words, the shock wave can increase the density at most by a factor of 6. For monoatomic gas, \gamma=5/3, therefore the density ratio is limited by the interval 1/4\leq \tilde v\leq 2\alpha + 4. For diatomic gases with vibrational mode excited, we have \gamma=9/7 leading to the interval 1/8\leq \tilde v\leq 2\alpha + 8.
A similar situation exists regarding the Korean KS X 1001 character set, in which Microsoft maps the EUC-KR or UHC code for the wave dash (0xA1AD) to U+223C (Tilde Operator), while IBM and Apple map it to U+301C. Microsoft also uses U+FF5E to map the KS X 1001 raised tilde (0xA2A6), while Apple uses U+02DC (˜).
A swung dash, or tilde (~) is used to indicate where the personal name occurs in the nickname; thus "~ the Accursed" means "Sviatopolk the Accursed".
If (C, J) and (D, K) are sites and u : C → D is a functor, then u is continuous if for every sheaf F on D with respect to the topology K, the presheaf Fu is a sheaf with respect to the topology J. Continuous functors induce functors between the corresponding topoi by sending a sheaf F to Fu. These functors are called pushforwards. If \tilde C and \tilde D denote the topoi associated to C and D, then the pushforward functor is u_s : \tilde D \to \tilde C. us admits a left adjoint us called the pullback. us need not preserve limits, even finite limits. In the same way, u sends a sieve on an object X of C to a sieve on the object uX of D. A continuous functor sends covering sieves to covering sieves.

In mathematics, the tilde operator (Unicode U+223C), sometimes called "twiddle", is often used to denote an equivalence relation between two objects. Thus "" means " is equivalent to ". It is a weaker statement than stating that equals . The expression "" is sometimes read aloud as " twiddles ", perhaps as an analogue to the verbal expression of "".. The tilde can indicate approximate equality in a variety of ways.
Though it has no official Unicode representation, one possible approximation is . The apex is often mistaken for a tilde in modern reproductions of early Vietnamese writing.
Typewritten text in Portuguese; note the acute accent, tilde, and circumflex accent. Portuguese orthography is based on the Latin alphabet and makes use of the acute accent, the circumflex accent, the grave accent, the tilde, and the cedilla to denote stress, vowel height, nasalization, and other sound changes. The diaeresis was abolished by the last Orthography Agreement. Accented letters and digraphs are not counted as separate characters for collation purposes.
A Biorthogonal wavelet is a wavelet where the associated wavelet transform is invertible but not necessarily orthogonal. Designing biorthogonal wavelets allows more degrees of freedom than orthogonal wavelets. One additional degree of freedom is the possibility to construct symmetric wavelet functions. In the biorthogonal case, there are two scaling functions \phi,\tilde\phi, which may generate different multiresolution analyses, and accordingly two different wavelet functions \psi,\tilde\psi.

After Eggsy stops Valentine's plan, he goes back to her cell and has sex with her.
It is collated as the 15th letter of the Filipino alphabet. In old Filipino orthography, the letter was also used, along with g, to represent the velar nasal sound (except at the end of a word, when ng would be used) if appropriate instead of a tilde, which originally spanned a sequence of n and g (as in n͠g), such as pan͠galan ("name"). That is because the old orthography was based on Spanish, and without the tilde, pangalan would have been pronounced with the sequence (therefore pang-GAlan). The form ñg became a more common way to represent n͠g until the early 20th century, mainly because it was more readily available in typesets than the tilde spanning both letters.
This symbol (in US English) informally means "approximately", "about", or "around", such as "~30 minutes before", meaning "approximately 30 minutes before". It can mean "similar to", including "of the same order of magnitude as", such as: "" meaning that and are of the same order of magnitude. Another approximation symbol is the double tilde , meaning "approximately equal to". The tilde is also used to indicate congruence of shapes by placing it over an symbol, thus: .
Languages written with Latin script may indicate nasal vowels by a trailing silent n or m, as is the case in French, Portuguese, Lombard (central classic orthography), Bamana, Breton, and Yoruba. In other cases, they are indicated by diacritics. In the International Phonetic Alphabet, nasal vowels are denoted by a tilde over the symbol for the vowel. The same practice can be found in Portuguese marking with a tilde in diphthongs (e.g.
The tilde was first used in the polytonic orthography of Ancient Greek, as a variant of the circumflex, representing a rise in pitch followed by a return to standard pitch.

The specific name honours paleontologist Román Guiñazú. It was emended in 1978 by Peter Wellnhofer into guinazui, because diacritical signs such as the tilde are not allowed in specific names.
The Selous's mongoose digs its own burrows, but may opportunistically use those of other animals.Stuart, Chris and Tilde. The Field Guide to Mammals of Southern Africa. Cape Town: Struik Publishers, 2007.
The tilde is used with many letters that are considered part of the alphabet. In the case of Ñ/ñ, it differentiates the palatal nasal from the alveolar nasal (as in Spanish), whereas it marks stressed nasalisation when used over a vowel (as in Portuguese): ã, ẽ, ĩ, õ, ũ, ỹ. (Nasal vowels have been written with several other diacritics: ä, ā, â, ã.) The tilde also marks nasality in the case of G̃/g̃, used to represent the nasalized velar approximant by combining the velar approximant "G" with the nasalising tilde. The letter G̃/g̃, which is unique to this language, was introduced into the orthography relatively recently during the mid-20th century and there is disagreement over its use.
The typebars of "normal" characters struck a rod as they moved the metal character desired toward the ribbon and platen, and each rod depression moved the platen forward the width of one character. Dead keys had a typebar shaped so as not to strike the rod. The tilde character, , never seen in isolation in metal typesetting, became a separate character in ASCII as a result of its use on dead keys for Spanish and Portuguese (see Tilde#Role of mechanical typewriters).
This usage probably developed as a typed alternative to the libra symbol used for the same purpose in written mathematics, which is an equal sign with the upper bar replaced by a bar with an upward hump, bump, or loop in the middle (︍︍♎︎) or, sometimes, a tilde (≃). The symbol "≈" is also used for this purpose. In physics and astronomy, a tilde can be used between two expressions (e.g. ) to state that the two are of the same order of magnitude.
A special capability, the "hz" capability, was defined specifically to support the Hazeltine 1500 terminal, which had the unfortunate characteristic of using the ASCII tilde character ('~') as a control sequence introducer. In order to support that terminal, not only did code that used the database have to know about using the tilde to introduce certain control sequences, but it also had to know to substitute another printable character for any tildes in the displayed text, since a tilde in the text would be interpreted by the terminal as the start of a control sequence, resulting in missing text and screen garbling. Additionally, attribute markers (such as start and end of underlining) themselves took up space on the screen. Comments in the database source code often referred to this as "Hazeltine braindamage".
The same applies to uppercase Ñ. the uppercase Ñ can be made with or . Character Map in Windows identifies the letter as "Latin Small/Capital Letter N With Tilde". A soft (not physical) Spanish-language keyboard is easily installed in Windows. In Microsoft Word, Ñ can be typed by pressing Control-Shift-Tilde (~) and then an N. On Linux it can be created by pressing Ctrl+Shift+U and then typing '00d1' or '00f1', followed by space or Ctrl to end the character code input.
The Selous's mongoose has a total length of 63–90 cm and a tail length of 28–43 cm. It weighs about 1.4-2.0 kg.Stuart, Chris and Tilde. The Field Guide to Mammals of Southern Africa.
The mapping cylinder may be viewed as a way to replace an arbitrary map by an equivalent cofibration, in the following sense: Given a map f\colon X \to Y, the mapping cylinder is a space M_f, together with a cofibration \tilde f\colon X \to M_f and a surjective homotopy equivalence M_f \to Y (indeed, Y is a deformation retract of M_f), such that the composition X \to M_f \to Y equals f. right Thus the space Y gets replaced with a homotopy equivalent space M_f, and the map f with a lifted map \tilde f. Equivalently, the diagram :f\colon X \to Y gets replaced with a diagram :\tilde f\colon X \to M_f together with a homotopy equivalence between them. The construction serves to replace any map of topological spaces by a homotopy equivalent cofibration.

The tilde (tilde in the American Heritage dictionary or ), or ), is a grapheme with several uses. The name of the character came into English from Spanish and from Portuguese, which in turn came from the Latin titulus, meaning "title" or "superscription". The reason for the name was that it was originally written over an omitted letter or several letters as a scribal abbreviation, or "mark of suspension" and "mark of contraction",Martin, Charles Trice (1910). The record interpreter : a collection of abbreviations, Latin words and names used in English historical manuscripts and records (2nd ed.).
The incorporation of the tilde into ASCII is a direct result of its appearance as a distinct character on mechanical typewriters in the late nineteenth century. When all character sets were pieces of metal permanently installed, and number of characters much more limited than in typography, the question of which languages and markets required which characters was an important one. Any good typewriter store had a catalog of alternative keyboards that could be specified for machines ordered from the factory. At that time, the tilde was used only in Spanish and Portuguese typewriters (keyboards).
Instead, it would display only the first six characters followed by a tilde character ("~") and a number, usually 1. More numbers (2, 3, and so on) were added after the tilde if more than one file name with the same initial characters existed in the same directory. The 16-bit version distributed with Windows 3.1x and Windows for Workgroups 3.1x installations had a Y2K issue due to lexicographic correlation between date representation and the ASCII character set; colons and semicolons replaced what should have been '2000'. Microsoft issued corrected binaries for all Windows 3.1x environments.
In the Portuguese language, the symbol Õ stands for a nasal close-mid back rounded vowel, also written in IPA. It is not considered an independent letter of the alphabet: the tilde is the standard diacritic for nasalization.
In English, the tilde is often used to express ranges and model numbers in electronics, but rarely in formal grammar or in type-set documents, as a wavy dash preceding a number sometimes represents an approximation (see below).

Logo of the Instituto Cervantes Logo of CNN en Español As indicated by the etymological origin of the word "tilde" in English, this symbol has been closely associated with the Spanish language. The connection stems from the use of the tilde above the letter to form the (different) letter in Spanish, a feature shared by only a few other languages, all historically connected to Spanish. This peculiarity can help non-native speakers quickly identify a text as being written in Spanish with little chance of error. In addition, most native speakers, although not all, use the word to refer to their language.
In phonetics, nasalization (or nasalisation) is the production of a sound while the velum is lowered, so that some air escapes through the nose during the production of the sound by the mouth. An archetypal nasal sound is . In the International Phonetic Alphabet, nasalization is indicated by printing a tilde diacritic above the symbol for the sound to be nasalized: is the nasalized equivalent of , and is the nasalized equivalent of . Latin American Spanish keyboard layout The Latin American Spanish keyboard layout is used throughout Mexico, Central and South America. Before its design, Latin American vendors had been selling the Spanish (Spain) layout as default. Its most obvious difference from the Spanish (Spain) layout is the lack of a Ç key; on Microsoft Windows it lacks a tilde (~) dead key, whereas on Linux systems the dead tilde can be optionally enabled. This is not a problem when typing in Spanish, but it is rather problematic when typing in Portuguese, which can be an issue in countries with large commercial ties to Brazil (Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay).
The symbol of Occidental was chosen in 1936 after some deliberation and many other proposed symbols, including stylized letters, a star as in Esperanto and Ido, a setting sun to represent the sun in the west (the Occident), a globe, and more. The tilde, already used by the Occidental-Union, was eventually selected based on five criteria: symbolic character, simplicity, originality, inconfusability, and for being bichromatic (having two colours) as opposed to polychromatic. Beyond the five criteria, the Occidentalists at the time referenced the lack of a fixed meaning for the tilde in the public sphere, and its similarity to a waveform, implying speech.
Unfortunately the single dot (but also ":", ":.", "::", etc.) is also used to symbolise "logical product" (contemporary logical AND often symbolised by "&" or "∧"). Logical implication is represented by Peano's "Ɔ" simplified to "⊃", logical negation is symbolised by an elongated tilde, i.e., "~" (contemporary "~" or "¬"), the logical OR by "v".
Let g_0 and g_1 be two Riemannian metrics on M. Then, for any number \lambda\in[0,1], :\tilde g:=\lambda g_0 + (1-\lambda)g_1 is also a Riemannian metric on M. More generally, if a and b are any two positive numbers, then ag_0+bg_1 is another Riemannian metric.
The grave accent and the diaeresis are the only diacritics native to Modern English (apart from diacritics used in loanwords, such as the acute accent, the cedilla, or the tilde). The use of both, however, is considered to be largely archaic. On Diacritics and Archaïsm. Flakery.org, June 18, 2006.
The destructor has the same name as the class, but with a tilde (~) before it. For example, a class called foo will have the destructor . Additionally, destructors have neither parameters nor return types. As stated above, a destructor for an object is called whenever the object's lifetime ends.
In Lithuanian, the distinction between acute and circumflex is not preserved in unstressed syllables. In Standard Lithuanian, based on the Aukštaitian dialect, the acute becomes a falling tone (so-called "Lithuanian metatony") and is marked with an acute accent, and the circumflex becomes a rising tone, marked with a tilde. In diphthongs, the acute accent is placed on the first letter of the diphthong while the tilde marking rising tone (the original circumflex) is placed on the second letter. In diphthongs with a sonorant as a second part, the same convention is used, but the acute accent is replaced with a grave accent if the vowel is i or u: Lithuanian acute pìlnas 'full' < PIE ) vs.
"H" and "J" are used with their English values, as in hand and jelly; older books wrote these sounds with and , respectively. For some speakers, freely varies with the Spanish , like the "J" in José. The tilde'ed versions of E, I, U, Y, and G are not available in ISO Latin-1 fonts, but can be represented in Unicode (except that tilded "G" is not available as a single precomposed letter, and must be encoded as a plain "G" plus a combining tilde). In digital environments where those glyphs are not available, the tilde is often postfixed to the base character ("E~", "I~", "U~", "Y~", "G~") or a circumflex is used instead ("Ê", "Î", "Û", "Ŷ", "Ĝ").
The universal cover of H is given as the quotient of PH by the normal subgroup of null-homotopic loops. The projection PH → H descends to the quotient giving the covering map. One can show that the universal cover is simply connected and the kernel is just the fundamental group of H. That is, we have a short exact sequence :1\to \pi_1(H) \to \tilde H \to H \to 1 where \tilde H is the universal cover of H. Concretely, the universal covering group of H is the space of homotopy classes of paths in H with pointwise multiplication of paths. The covering map sends each path class to its endpoint.

The acute indicates rising tone, while the apex marked final nasalization. Note that de Rhodes called the tilde a "circumflex". In his 1651 ', Alexandre de Rhodes makes it clear that the apex is a distinct diacritic: The apex appears atop , , and less commonly . As with other accent marks, a tone mark can appear atop the apex.

The letters M and N, when written without diacritics, indicate nasalisation of the preceding vowel. M and N also occur as syllabics - in these circumstances, they take acute or grave tonal diacritics, like the vowels. Middle tone is marked with a macron to differentiate it from the unmarked nasalising consonants. A tilde was used in older orthography (still occasionally used) to indicate a double vowel.

Some of the same methods were described in other manuscripts predating the Summa (such as the 1458 Della mercatura e del mercante perfetto by Benedetto Cotrugli), but none was published before Pacioli's work, and none achieved the same wide influence. The work's role in standardizing and disseminating professional bookkeeping methods has earned Pacioli a reputation as the "father of accounting". The book also marks the beginning of a movement in sixteenth-century algebra toward the use of logical argumentation and theorems in the study of algebra, following the model of classical Greek geometry established by Euclid. It is thought to be the first printed work on algebra, and it includes the first printed example of a set of plus and minus signs that were to become standard in Italian Renaissance mathematics: 'p' with a tilde above (p̄) for "plus" and 'm' with a tilde (m̄) for minus.

This is due to the word acting as an emoticon on Twitch, a livestreaming site, where it has gained popularity for such purpose. It is also common to use the combination of an open-parenthesis and an interrogation symbol as "(?" to mark irony. A "SarcMark" symbol requiring custom computer font software was proposed in 2010. Another method of expressing sarcasm is by placing a tilde (~) adjacent to the punctuation.
In typography, overstrike is a method of printing characters that are missing from the printer's character set. The character was created by placing one character on another one — for example, overstriking "L" with "-" resulted in printing a "Ł" (L with stroke) character. The ASCII code supports six different diacritics. These are: grave accent, tilde, acute accent (approximated by the apostrophe), diaeresis (double quote), cedilla (comma), and circumflex accent.
Code Page 1019 (CCSID 1019), also known as CP1019, is the code page for the Dutch version of ISO 646. It is roughly equivalent to ASCII, differing only in replacing the tilde with a macron. This produces Ñ or ñ. Another option (for any operating system) is to configure the system to use the US-International keyboard layout, with which ñ can be produced either by holding Alt Gr and then pressing N, or by typing the tilde (~) followed by n. Yet another option is to use a compose key (hardware-based or software-emulated). Pressing the compose key, then ~, and then n results in ñ.
In Latvian, long segments (the same criteria as in Lithuanian) can take on one of three pitches (intonācijas or more specifically zilbes intonācijas) either stiepta ("level"), lauzta ("broken") or krītoša ("falling") indicated by Latvian linguists with a tilde, circumflex or a grave accent respectively (in IPA, however, the tilde is replaced by a macron because the former is already reserved to denote nasalized vowels.) Some authors note that the level pitch is realized simply as "ultra long" (or overlong.) Endzelīns (1897) identifies "level diphthongs" as consisting of 3 moras not just two. Broken pitch is, in turn, a falling pitch with superadded glottalization. And, indeed, the similarity between the Latvian broken pitch and Danish stød has been described by several authors. At least in Danish phonology, stød (unlike Norwegian and Swedish pitch accents) is not considered a pitch accent distinction but, rather, variously described as either glottalization, laryngealization, creaky voice or vocal fry.
Castañeda or Castaneda is a Spanish surname. The name's meaning is habitational, from any of various places in Santander, Asturias, and Salamanca, derived from castañeda, a collective of castaña "chestnut". In non-Hispanic countries, the name is usually spelled Castaneda (without the tilde).

The ultimate origin of Io is with the Biblical Yohanan (יוֹחָנָן), a reference to the divine right, and, in the baptismal name "John", an implicit expression of thanks for the child's birth; the abbreviation is performed as with other nomina sacra, but appears as Ioan in Orthodox Church ectenia.Croitoru, pp. 392–394, 406 The Slavonic Ιω very often features a tilde over the second letter, which is indicative of a silent "n".Xenopol, p.
The second objective was that the C shell should be better for interactive use. It introduced numerous new features that made it easier, faster and more friendly to use by typing commands at a terminal. Users could get things done with a lot fewer keystrokes and it ran faster. The most significant of these new features were the history and editing mechanisms, aliases, directory stacks, tilde notation, cdpath, job control, and path hashing.
The language commands always start with a caret ('`^`') or tilde sign ('`~`'). Currently, more than 170 commands exist in ZPL II. Each format has to start with the command `^XA` and end with `^XZ`. For instance, the font size is sent to the printer with the `^ADN,n,m` command, where `n` and `m` are integers denoting the font size and spacing characteristics; `^ADN,18,10` is the smallest size and `^ADN,180,100` the largest.
In the Received Pronunciation of English, creaky voice has been described as a possible realisation of glottal reinforcement. For example, an alternative phonetic transcription of attempt could be . In some languages, such as Jalapa Mazatec, creaky voice has a phonemic status; that is, the presence or absence of creaky voice can change the meaning of a word. In the International Phonetic Alphabet, creaky voice of a phone is represented by a diacritical tilde , for example .
The palatal nasal was written (the geminate being one of the sound's Latin origins), but it was often abbreviated to following the common scribal shorthand of replacing an or with a tilde above the previous letter. Later, was used exclusively, and it came to be considered a letter in its own right by Modern Spanish. Also, as in modern times, the palatal lateral was indicated with , again reflecting its origin from a Latin geminate.
Tilde had been responsible for switching a record during a radio advertisement, in order to play the banned Fascist anthem Giovinezza in piazza del Duomo.Cicchino & Olivo, p. 279 The authors of Tilde's murder were never discovered, but the modus operandi was that typical of the Volante Rossa.Cicchino & Olivo, p. 281 On the same day another ausiliaria was murdered, Eva Maciacchini, a member of the Squadre d'Azione Mussolini ("Mussolini" Shock Squads), whose body was found near Lambrate.
It is also as a small that the tilde originated when written above other letters, marking a Latin which had been elided in old Galician-Portuguese. In modern Portuguese it indicates nasalization of the base vowel: "hand", from Lat. manu-; "reasons", from Lat. . This usage has been adopted in the orthographies of several native languages of South America, such as Guarani and Nheengatu, as well as in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and many other phonetic alphabets.
In this case, the filenames become mangled by taking the first six non-space characters in the filename and adding a tilde (~) and then a number to ensure the uniqueness of the 8.3 filename on the disk. This mangling scheme can turn (for example) `Program Files` into `PROGRA~1`. This technique persists today when people use DOSBox to play classic DOS games or use Windows 3.1 in conjunction to play Win16 games on 64-bit Windows.

It is a narrow, tilde-shaped area stretching about from north to south and at its widest. The watershed shares a boundary with Frog Creek and Eleanor Creek to the west, and Tiltill and Rancheria Creek to the east. All of these creeks are tributaries of the Tuolumne River, which is in turn a tributary of the San Joaquin River.
Armenian uses several punctuation marks of its own. The full stop is represented by a colon, and vice versa; the exclamation mark is represented by a diagonal similar to a tilde , while the question mark resembles an unclosed circle placed after the last vowel of the word. Arabic, Urdu, and Persian—written from right to left—use a reversed question mark: , and a reversed comma: . This is a modern innovation; pre-modern Arabic did not use punctuation.
Cemetery Man () is a 1994 comedy horror film directed by Michele Soavi and starring Rupert Everett, François Hadji-Lazaro and Anna Falchi. It was produced by Tilde Corsi, Gianni Romoli and Soavi and based on the novel Dellamorte Dellamore by Tiziano Sclavi. Everett plays a beleaguered caretaker of a small Italian cemetery, who searches for love while defending himself from dead people who keep rising again. It is an international co-production between Italy, France, and Germany.
Eggsy marries Princess Tilde after he and Harry save the world from the Golden Circle's virus outbreak. ;Hamish Mycroft / Merlin Hamish Mycroft, also known as "Merlin" (Mark Strong), is Kingsman's Scottish tech support officer and head of recruit training. He is based on Rupert Greaves from the graphic novel. Upon the revelation of Arthur working with Valentine, Merlin brings Eggsy and Roxy directly to Valentine's secret lair, as it is unknown which other Kingsman agents have sided with Valentine.
Having lost her legs at a young age, she walks using metallic appendages that double as razor sharp blades. It is she who kills James Spencer, the original "Lancelot", in Argentina. She is also instrumental in the kidnapping of Crown Princess Tilde of Sweden, murdering her two bodyguards when they try to intervene. After a long bout of hand-to-hand combat, Gazelle is killed by Eggsy, who cuts her arm with a poison-tipped shoe blade.
Bureus, J., Runa ABC boken The uo ligature ů in particular saw use in Early Modern High German, but it merged in later Germanic languages with u (e.g. MHG , ENHG fuͦß, Modern German "foot"). It survives in Czech, where it is called . The tilde diacritic, used in Spanish as part of the letter ñ, representing the palatal nasal consonant, and in Portuguese for nasalization of a vowel, originated in ligatures where n followed the base letter: → .
The C shell, csh, was modeled on the C programming language, including the control structures and the expression grammar. It was written by Bill Joy as a graduate student at University of California, Berkeley, and was widely distributed with BSD Unix.Harley Hahn, Harley Hahn's Guide to Unix and Linux. The C shell also introduced many features for interactive work, including the history and editing mechanisms, aliases, directory stacks, tilde notation, cdpath, job control and path hashing.
Kelso and Engstrøm argue that these pairs are not mutually exclusive, but complementary. They propose a comprehensive, empirically-based scientific theory of how contraries can be reconciled based on Kelso's theory of metastable coordination dynamics. The essence of the theory is that the human brain is capable of displaying two apparently contradictory, mutually exclusive behaviors – integration and segregation – at the same time. Kelso and Engstrøm use the tilde, or squiggle (~), as the symbol for reconciled complementary pairs (e.g.
In Unix, a user will be automatically placed into their home directory upon login. The `~user` shorthand variable refers to a user's home directory (allowing the user to navigate to it from anywhere else in the filesystem, or use it in other Unix commands). The `~` (tilde character) shorthand command refers to that particular user's home directory. The Unix superuser has access to all directories on the filesystem, and hence can access home directories of all users.
The catalog of Niccolò van Westerhout, in addition to a wide array of chamber music and symphonic works, includes five operas: Tilde, which has been lost; Cimbelino, which was first performed at the Teatro Argentina in Rome in 1892; Fortunio, represented in Milan in 1894 (intended, originally, at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, but then staged at the Teatro Lirico), Doña Flor, at the Teatro Municipale in Mola di Bari in 1896, Colomba, represented in 1925 at the Teatro San Carlo.
The consonant "ŋ" is a single letter in Karay-a and in all other indigenous Philippine languages. In the old Romanized Karay-a cursive, a line is placed above both letters of "ng" with one long wavy stroke ("n͠g") to denote that it is a single letter, distinct from "n"+"g". Older speakers today still use the long tilde but the younger generation don't bother with it. Besides, for those unfamiliar with the language, they mistake it for the Spanish "ñ".

Due to its use in email and Twitter handles, the at sign (@) have gone from an obscure character mostly used by sellers of bulk commodities (10 pounds @$2.00 per pound), to a very common character in common use for both technical routing and an abbreviation for "at". The tilde (~), in moveable type only used in combination with vowels, for mechanical reasons ended up as a separate key on mechanical typewriters, and like @ it has been put to completely new uses.
Cirkus Cirkör emerged as a small independent contemporary circus group, founded in Stockholm in 1995. The company was formed - and is today still run by - Tilde Björfors. Cirkus Cirkör was one of Sweden's very first contemporary circus groups, inspired by Cirque du Soleil, among others. Cirkus Cirkör, however, moves more towards vaudeville- and variety show-inspired circus shows in expression, preferring small and intimate stage shows (in smaller playhouses and older theatre stages), in contrast to big, Las Vegas-style circus shows.
So as not to sacrifice two of the tightly limited keys to , the decision was made to make the a separate "dead" character in which the carriage holding the paper did not move after the symbol was typed. When the 'normal' character was typed, it is printed under the previously-typed tilde, creating the desired accented character. (For example, then produces ). Dead keys had a notch cut out to evade the mechanical linkage that triggered carriage movement and thus enabled this process of "overstriking".
Tilde Maria Henny Märta Fröling (born 15 May 1980), the daughter of the Swedish actors Ewa Fröling and Örjan Ramberg, is a Swedish actress, TV presenter and model. She was the winning participant in the 2005 TV3 celebrity version of Expedition Robinson. Currently Fröling can be seen on Swedish television channels TV6 and TV3, on the TV shows Rocky & Drago with Peter Siepen, and Lustgården respectively. She has figured in a television advertisement with Pontus Gårdinger for the Swedish lager Norrlands Guld, manufactured by Spendrups.
Dajana Lööf (born 2 January 1983 in Yugoslavia) is a Swedish singer, songwriter and TV-host. Lööf came into the spotlight in 2003 when she was a contestant and finalist in the talent show Fame Factory the Swedish version of Fame Academy on TV3. She has also been hosting the nightly game show Nattöppet on TV4 and Lustgården on TV3 along with Tilde Fröling. Lööf co-wrote the entry Aphrodisiac that represented Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 performed by singer Eleftheria Eleftheriou.
Swim (styled swim~ the tilde "~" is part of the written name, but is not pronounced) is a record label founded in 1993, and jointly run, by Wire guitarist and singer Colin Newman, and Minimal Compact bass player and singer Malka Spigel. The label has published various solo projects and collaborations by Spigel and Newman, most notably Githead, a group formed on the occasion of the label's tenth anniversary, as well as music by a number of indie bands such as Ronnie and Clyde, Lobe and Silo.
In Kingsman: The Golden Circle, she and Eggsy are in a relationship and living together in London. While they are attending a formal dinner in Sweden with Princess Tilde's parents, the King and Queen, a missile attack kills all Kingsman personnel except for Eggsy and Merlin. Tilde gives Eggsy a new puppy to replace his dog JB, also killed in the strike, before he departs to bring down the Golden Circle cartel. She is distraught when Eggsy tells her the mission requires him to seduce another woman.
Windows-932 includes standard 7-bit ASCII mappings for single- byte sequences with the high bit set to 0. Hence, codes 0x5C and 0x7E are mapped to Unicode as U+005C REVERSE SOLIDUS (`\`, the backslash) and U+007E TILDE (`~`) respectively, as they are in ASCII (ISO-646-US). This is likewise done by the W3C/WHATWG encoding standard. By contrast, 0x5C is mapped to U+00A5 YEN SIGN (`¥`) in ISO-646-JP and consequently JIS X 0201, of which standard Shift JIS is an extension.
Breton is written in the Latin script. Peurunvan, the most commonly used orthography, consists of the following letters: : a, b, ch, c'h, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v, w, y, z The circumflex, grave accent, trema and tilde appear on some letters. These diacritics are used in the following way: : â, ê, î, ô, û, ù, ü, ñ See v:Introduction to Breton/Breton pronunciation for an introduction to the Breton alphabet and pronunciation.
Code page 1041 is an extension of Code page 897 and adds five single-byte characters. 0x80 is mapped to the cent sign (`¢`), 0xA0 is mapped to the pound sign (`£`), 0xFD is mapped to the not sign (`¬`), 0xFE is mapped to the backslash (`\`) and 0xFF is mapped to the tilde (`~`). These are all unassigned in Code page 897 and therefore IBM-932. Code page 942 contains standard 7-bit ISO 646 codes, and Japanese characters are indicated by the high bit of the first byte being set to 1. Some code points in this page require a second byte, so characters use either 8 or 16 bits for encoding. Code page 1041, and therefore Code page 942, uses 0x5C for the Yen sign (`¥`) and 0x7E for the overline (`‾`), matching the lower half of JIS X 0201 rather than US-ASCII. However, the version of Code page 942 used in International Components for Unicode (called "ibm-942_P12A-1999" or "x-IBM942C") uses US- ASCII mappings for single-byte characters between 0x20 and 0x7E. This results in duplicate mapping for the tilde (0x7E and 0xFF) and the backslash (0x5C and 0xFE).
Ident is important on IRC as a large number of people connect to IRC from a server shared by multiple users, often using a bouncer. Without Ident there would be no way to ban a single user without banning the entire host. The server administrator may also use this information to identify the abusive user. On most IRC networks, when the server fails to get an Ident response it falls back to the username given by client, but marks it as "not verified", usually by prefixing with a tilde; e.g. `~josh`.
The command set for Hazeltine terminals was fairly simple, consisting mostly of line editing and cursor positioning commands. The tilde, was used as the escape character, or as they referred to it, the "lead-in code". The 1510/1520 also allowed to be used as the lead-in. Simple one-letter commands following the lead-in included for cursor-to-home (upper left corner of the screen), for up-cursor, (vertical tab) for down-cursor, (backspace) for cursor-left and for cursor- right, and (form separator) for clear screen.
The voiceless alveolar lateral fricative is a type of consonantal sound, used in some spoken languages. The symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet that represents voiceless dental, alveolar, and postalveolar lateral fricatives is , and the equivalent X-SAMPA symbol is `[K]`. The symbol is called "belted l" and should not be confused with "l with tilde", , which transcribes a different sound, the velarized alveolar lateral approximant. It should also be distinguished from a voiceless alveolar lateral approximant, although the fricative is sometimes incorrectly described as a "voiceless l", a description fitting only of the approximant.
This saved on the expense of the scribe's labour and the cost of vellum and ink. Medieval European charters written in Latin are largely made up of such abbreviated words with suspension marks and other abbreviations; only uncommon words were given in full. The tilde has since been applied to a number of other uses as a diacritic mark or a character in its own right. These are encoded in Unicode with many precomposed characters as well as individually at and , and there are additional similar characters for different roles.
In the computing field, especially in Unix-based systems, the tilde indicates the user's home directory. In more recent digital usage, tildes on either side of a word or phrase have sometimes come to convey a particular tone that "let[s] the enclosed words perform both sincerity and irony", which can pre-emptively defuse a negative reaction. For example, BuzzFeed journalist Joseph Bernstein interprets the tildes in the following tweet: :in the ~ spirit of the season ~ will now link to some of the (imho) #Bestof2014 sports reads. if you hate nice things, mute that hashtag.
The city is known for its many public parks, fossil discoveries, Skyline Drive, The Royal Gorge railroad, the Royal Gorge, and extensive natural hiking paths. In 1994, the United States Board on Geographic Names approved adding the tilde to the official name of Cañon City, a change from Canon City as the official name in its decisions of 1906 and 1975. It is one of the few U.S. cities to have the Spanish Ñ in its name, others being La Cañada Flintridge, California; Española, New Mexico; Peñasco, New Mexico; and Cañones, New Mexico.
Carmen also produced Hinter's Die Sportlady (1922), which gave her the "vamp" image. Carmen often preferred to work with Tilde Fogl and Rita Barré, female screen writers, during her acting and producing career. Carmen won many beauty and fashion prizes in 1921-23 and became more famous than other female film stars such as Liane Haid and Magda Sonja. She starred in Wilhelm Thiele’s Fiat Lux (1923), Robert Wiene’s Orlacs Hände/The Hands of Orlac (1924), and Hans Homma’s Die Puppe des Maharadscha/The Doll of the Maharajah (1924).

The Selous's mongoose is also smaller and more slender than the white-tailed mongoose. The mongoose has four digits on each limb and long, slightly curved claws that are associated with digging.
Besides nasalized oral fricatives, there are true nasal fricatives, previously called nareal fricatives. They are sometimes produced by people with disordered speech. The turbulence in the airflow characteristic of fricatives is produced not in the mouth but in the nasal cavity. A superimposed homothetic sign that resembles a colon divided by a tilde is used for this in the extensions to the IPA: is a voiced alveolar nasal fricative, with no airflow out of the mouth, and is the voiceless equivalent; is an oral fricative with simultaneous nasal frication.
The circumflex is a diacritic in the Latin and Greek scripts that is used in the written forms of many languages and in various romanization and transcription schemes. It received its English name from Latin circumflexus "bent around"a translation of the Greek περισπωμένη (perispōménē). The circumflex in the Latin script is chevron-shaped ( ˆ ), while the Greek circumflex may be displayed either like a tilde ( ˜ ) or like an inverted breve ( ̑ ). In English, the circumflex, like other diacritics, is sometimes retained on loanwords that used it in the original language (for example, crème brûlée).
Roxy makes a brief appearance in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, covertly feeding information and conversation points to Eggsy during his dinner with Crown Princess Tilde and her parents. She and the other Kingsman agents in Britain, except Eggsy and Merlin, are killed by missiles fired by Poppy Adams' terrorist organisation The Golden Circle. ;James Spencer / Lancelot James Spencer (Jack Davenport) is the original "Lancelot" in Kingsman: The Secret Service. Whilst on a mission in 1997, both he, Harry, and Merlin were saved by Lee Unwin, who sacrificed himself by jumping on a suicide bomber.
Handel Gothic was also used for the end credits of Sesame Street (1983-1992). The Elsner+Flake, Linotype and URW++ versions use a curved leg on uppercase R (like that of Helvetica), a horizontal tail on the uppercase Q (like that of Univers), a curved lower leg on the lowercase k, and a trident- like lowercase w. The Bitstream and Tilde SIA versions, however, use a thicker 1, a straight leg on the uppercase R (like that of Akzidenz Grotesk), a straight lower leg on the lowercase k, and a double-v w.
In medieval times, "~" was a shorthand for an extra "N". Thus, this inscription is read "Tanto monta" ("it amounts as much"). It was engraved in Alhambra after Reconquista by the Catholic Kings, meaning that both Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon were equivalent in power ("Tanto monta, monta tanto, Isabel como Fernando"). Historically, ñ arose as a ligature of nn; the tilde was shorthand for the second n, written over the first;Buitrago, A., Torijano, J. A.: "Diccionario del origen de las palabras".
Danish hairdresser Ida (Trine Dyrholm), who has recently completed a successful breast cancer treatment after undergoing a mastectomy, returns home to find her husband Leif having an affair with his accountant, Tilde. In a different part of Copenhagen, American businessman Philip, (Pierce Brosnan) is a successful exporter of fruits and vegetables who has become misanthropic after the death of his wife. Meanwhile, Ida's daughter Astrid and Philip's son Patrick have gone to Italy to prepare Patrick's family's villa for their wedding, which is to take place only three months after they met. Ida is in denial about her husband leaving her.
In the Standard Model, this non-zero expectation is responsible for the fermion masses, as shown below. To exhibit the mass term, the action can be re-expressed in terms of the derived field \tilde \phi = \phi-\phi_0, where \phi_0 is constructed to be a constant independent of position. This means that the Yukawa term has a component :g\phi_0 \bar\psi\psi and since both g and \phi_0 are constants, this term resembles a mass term for a fermion with mass g\phi_0. This mechanism, the Higgs mechanism, is the means by which spontaneous symmetry breaking gives mass to fermions.
The Moore–Penrose pseudoinverse T=(A-\lambda_\star I)^+ is the preconditioner, which makes the Richardson iteration above converge in one step with \gamma_n=1, since I-(A-\lambda_\star I)^+(A-\lambda_\star I), denoted by P_\star, is the orthogonal projector on the eigenspace, corresponding to \lambda_\star. The choice T=(A-\lambda_\star I)^+ is impractical for three independent reasons. First, \lambda_\star is actually not known, although it can be replaced with its approximation \tilde\lambda_\star. Second, the exact Moore–Penrose pseudoinverse requires the knowledge of the eigenvector, which we are trying to find.
The Hampartsoum notation uses symbols derived from an older notation called khaz () used by the Armenian Church. Pitch is indicated by one of forty-five symbols. There are fourteen notes per octave over a range of three octaves and a minor second; a tilde is used in place of a sharp and also to raise or lower a note an octave. All twelve notes of the Western chromatic scale are represented, but in the case of F-sharp (fa diyez in Turkish) and B-natural (si), two enharmonic symbols are used for each, because Middle Eastern music uses microtonal intervals called commas.
The British military entered Atyapland 3 April 1903 and took it without a fight from the Atyap, probably due to the fatigue incurred on the Kwassau wars which the people were still recovering from. The British then left Atyapland and moved to the Bajju who, however, put up a fight but fell to the British. In 1904, the British moved to the Agworok in what was known as the Tilde Expedition, starting from Jema'a Daroro on 7 November 1904. When the British conquered the north and Middle Belt of Nigeria 1903–4, they followed a system of indirect rule.
Tilde Ingham (born 6 August 1988) is a Swedish soul singer, songwriter and musician. In early 2018 she began recording her debut album, Nothing Gold Can Stay, at Spinroad Studios in Gothenburg with BRIT-award winning producer Pedro Ferreira (who previously worked with The Darkness and swedish singer Albin Lee Meldau). The album was released in September 2018 on her independent record label Vacanze Records. In 2019, Swedish newspaper Göteborgs-Posten placed the title track 'Nothing Gold Can Stay' in the top ten of the best songs of the decade originating from the swedish town of Gothenburg.
In 2006, Tilde de Paula co-authored the book Plastmammor, gummipappor och bonusbarn with Birgitta Klang published by Bokförlaget DN. Plastmammor, gummipappor och bonusbarn is a book for stepmothers and fathers who need advice on how to tackle the situation they are facing. In 2015, de Paula wrote the Swedish best selling book Tiden läker inga sår, which tells the story of her past and how her ancestors have influenced her life. The story begins five generations back in Tenerife in 1867, and continues to Cuba, the United States and Chile before ending up in Sweden today.
Geographical names in particular are supposed to be written with A, O, U plus e, except . The omission can cause some inconvenience, since the first letter of every noun is capitalized in German. Unlike in Hungarian, the exact shape of the umlaut diacritics – especially when handwritten – is not important, because they are the only ones in the language (not counting the tittle on i and j). They will be understood whether they look like dots (¨), acute accents (˝), vertical bars (‖), a horizontal bar (macron, ¯), a breve (˘), a tiny N or e, a tilde (˜), and such variations are often used in stylized writing (e.g. logos).
Shift JIS is based on character sets defined within JIS standards (for the single-byte characters) and (for the double-byte characters). The lead bytes for the double-byte characters are "shifted" around the 64 halfwidth katakana characters in the single-byte range 0xA1 to 0xDF. The single-byte characters 0x00 to 0x7F match the ASCII encoding, except for a yen sign (U+00A5) at 0x5C and an overline (U+203E) at 0x7E in place of the ASCII character set's backslash and tilde respectively. The single-byte characters from 0xA1 to 0xDF map to the half-width katakana characters found in .
7-bit Roman (shift in) set 7-bit Kana (shift out) set The first half (Roman set) of JIS X 0201 constitutes a Japanese variant of ISO 646, amounting to ASCII with backslash (\\) and tilde (~) replaced by yen (¥) and overline (‾), while the second half (Kana set) consists mainly of katakana. Control characters are specified in JIS X 0211. In the 7-bit format, the shift out control character (0x0E) switches to the Kana set and shift in (0x0F) switches to the Roman set. In the 8-bit format, given in the chart below, bytes with the most significant bit set (i.e.
This runs as a SunOS process and thus allows multiple MS-DOS session to be run simultaneously, a major selling point of the Sun386i. Unix long file names are accessed using a mapping to DOS 8.3 filenames, Sun 386i manual for DOS command the file names being modified to include a tilde and to be unique as far as possible. Special drive letters are used including H: for the user's home directory and D: for the current working directory when the DOS shell is started.
As a brand, encompassed most, if not all dealers formerly under Mazda's "Auto" dealer chain. Pronounced like the French word infini, the name is written with a tilde over the lowercase Greek ε (as in ɛ̃), and can therefore be assumed to be IPA, the pronunciation symbols taught in Japan, and sometimes used in product naming. The marque was a luxury-oriented brand, as opposed to the more mainstream, fun to drive Eunos brand, traditional Mazda, and entry level Autozam. The vehicles sold didn't comply with Japanese government exterior and engine displacement regulations which classed all vehicles sold as as exclusive luxury products.
By contrast, more recent proposals, such as the snark mark, or the use of a following tilde are specifically intended to denote sarcasm rather than irony. A bracketed exclamation point or question mark as well as scare quotes are also sometimes used to express irony or ironic sarcasm. In certain Ethiopic languages, sarcasm and unreal phrases are indicated at the end of a sentence with a sarcasm mark called temherte slaq, a character that looks like an inverted exclamation point ¡. The usage directly parallels John Wilkins' 1668 proposal to use the inverted exclamation point as an irony mark.
She intends to travel alone to Italy for the wedding, but at Copenhagen airport she bumps into Philip for the first time (her car collides with Philip's). After he shouts at her for being a reckless driver he realizes she is Astrid's mother and the two travel the rest of the way to the villa together. They do not have a favourable view of one another as Philip finds Ida irritating while Ida thinks that Philip is rude and mean. At the villa drama ensues when Leif brings his new girlfriend, Tilde, to the wedding and everyone is surprised when she introduces herself as his fiancée.
Rare publication guides may still use the dieresis on words, such as "coöperate", rather than the now-more-common "co-operate" (UK) or "cooperate" (US). For a fuller discussion, see articles branching from Lists of English words of international origin, which was used to determine the diacritics needed for more unambiguous English. However, an é or è is sometimes used in poetry to show that a normally silent vowel is to be pronounced, as in "blessèd". # ↑↑↑↑ Filipino also known as Tagalog also uses the digraph ng, even originally with a large tilde that spanned both n and g (as in n͠g) when a vowel follows the digraph.
In 1830 Ljudevit Gaj published Kratka osnova horvatsko-slavenskoga pravopisanja ("Brief basics of the Croatian-Slavic orthography"), which was the first linguistic work to be published during the movement. In it he presented his proposal for a reform of the Illyrian alphabet, which included the introduction of diacritics. This was motivated by the alphabets of other Slavic peoples who wrote in the Latin script (Czechs, Slovaks and Poles), as well as by earlier domestic practices such as the alphabet used by Pavao Ritter Vitezović. After Vitezović's letters l̃ and ñ Gaj introduced tilde as a diacritic in the letters c̃, z̃, s̃, l̃, ñ, d̃ and g̃.
Particularly during the 1990s, Spanish- speaking intellectuals and news outlets demonstrated support for the language and the culture by defending this letter against globalisation and computerisation trends that threatened to remove it from keyboards and other standardised products and codes. The Instituto Cervantes, founded by Spain's government to promote the Spanish language internationally, chose as its logo a highly stylised with a large tilde. The 24-hour news channel CNN in the US later adopted a similar strategy on its existing logo for the launch of its Spanish-language version. And similarly to the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Spain men's national basketball team is nicknamed "ÑBA".
In some languages (though not generally in English), a tilde- like wavy dash may be used as punctuation (instead of an unspaced hyphen, en dash or em dash) between two numbers, to indicate a range rather than subtraction or a hyphenated number (such as a part number or model number). For example, "12~15" means "12 to 15", "~3" means "up to three", and "100~" means "100 and greater". East Asian languages almost always use this convention, but it is often done for clarity in some other languages as well. Chinese uses the wavy dash and full-width em dash interchangeably for this purpose.
Tito Gobbi was born in Bassano del Grappa. He began his studies in law at the University of Padua and, during that time, his talent was discovered by a family friend, Baron Agostino Zanchetta, who suggested that he study singing. To do so, Gobbi moved to Rome in 1932 to study under Giulio Crimi, a well-known Italian tenor of a previous generation, who had sung in the first performances of Puccini's Il trittico as well as in Zandonai's Francesca da Rimini. Article on Tito Gobbi on Italian Wikipedia Accompanying Gobbi on the piano at his first audition was Tilde De Rensis, daughter of musicologist Raphael De Rensis.
In the letters the word occurs numerous times in its plural form, both with a final n/m: mandarĩs, manderĩs, manderỹs and without it: mandaris, manderys, mandarys. (Note that in the 16th-century Portuguese orthography, one would often put a tilde over a final vowel instead of writing an n or m after the vowel; thus ĩ or ỹ would be transcribed as in/im or yn/ym in most modern reprints.) and in Castanheda's História do descobrimento e conquista da Índia pelos portugueses (c. 1559).Fernão Lopes de Castanheda, História do descobrimento e conquista da Índia pelos portugueses, Vol. VI, cap II, 26.
Some of Lexmark's keyboard manufacturing assets were also sold to a group of Lexmark employees, who formed Unicomp. Unicomp still manufactures its version of the Model M (similar to part number 42H1292 but first renamed 42H1292U and subsequently the "Customizer"), as well as other configurations including updated 104- and 105-key layouts; a Unix layout (where the Ctrl and Caps Lock keys and Esc and tilde keys are transposed); models with integrated pointing sticks or trackballs; and POS- specific models such as those with built-in magstripe readers. Although current Unicomp models may still be purchased, original production models retain their value well among collectors and computer enthusiasts.
It is a combination of SBCS Code page 1126 and DBCS Code page 1362. It differs in having a single byte mapping of 0x5C to the Won sign (U+20A9); Windows maps 0x5C to U+005C (the Unicode code point for the backslash) as in ASCII, although fonts often still render it as a Won sign. Unicode mapping of the wave dash (0xA1AD) also differs, with the IBM mapping favouring U+301C, while the Microsoft mapping favours U+223C (Tilde Operator). The IBM mapping for UHC is available as "ibm-1363" in ICU, whereas the ICU "windows-949" codec is referred to as IBM-1261 in some ICU source code comments.
Clicking is not the only way of selecting an active window, however: some window managers (such as FVWM) make the window under the mouse pointer active—simply moving the mouse is sufficient to switch windows; a click is not needed. Window managers often provide a way to select the active window using the keyboard as an alternative to the mouse. One typical key combination is Alt+Tab, used by Windows and KDE (by default, though this is user-configurable); another is apple key-tilde, used by Macintosh. Pressing the appropriate key combination typically cycles through all visible windows in some order, though other actions are possible.
Leaping to document landmarks such as next or previous word, line, page, section, and document amounts to leaping to Space, New line, Page, and Document characters, which are inserted using the Spacebar, Enter, Page and Document keys respectively. On a standard computer keyboard, Archy uses the Alt keys as Leap keys, Backquote (`) as a Document character and Tilde (~) as a Page character. The cursor can still be moved forward and back by one character using the Left and Right arrow keys, and the text can be scrolled up and down by one line using the Up and Down arrow keys. This is known as Creeping.
Level 2 defines the following order of diacritics and other modifications: # Acute accent (á) # Grave accent (à) # Breve (ă) # Circumflex (â) # Hacek (háček) (š) # Ring (å) # Trema (ä) # Double acute accent (ő) # Tilde (ã) # Dot (ż) # Cedilla (ş) # Ogonek (ą) # Macron (ā) # With stroke through (ø) # Modified letter(s) (æ) Level 3 makes the distinction between Capital and small letters, as in "Polish" and "polish". Level 4 concerns punctuation and whitespace characters. This level makes the distinction between "MacDonald" and "Mac Donald", "its" and "it's". An optional, and usually omitted, fifth level can distinguish typographical differences, including whether the text is italic, normal or bold.
This letter survives now only in Czech. Compare also for the digraph nn, with the tilde as a superscript . In blackletter handwriting as used in German manuscripts of the later Middle Ages, and also in many printed texts of the early modern period, the superscript still had a form that would be recognisable to us as an , but in manuscript writing, umlauted vowels could be indicated by two dots since the late medieval period. In the forms of handwriting that emerged in the early modern period (of which Sütterlin is the latest and best-known example) the letter was composed of two short vertical lines very close together, and the superscript looked like two tiny strokes.
Wikipedia Marathon poster in Riga Latvian Wikipedia Marathon () was a project that brought together the Latvian Wikipedia community with several private partners in joint effort with the aim of expanding the Latvian Wikipedia to activate the usability of the Latvian language in the learning process, cognition and research work. The marathon opened on 11 March 2015. The project aimed to expand the Latvian Wikipedia to 100 thousand articles by 100th Anniversary of the Latvian Republic (18 November 2018). The marathon was an initiative of Norvik Banka, and partners - the University of Latvia, the State Language Centre, Latvian Wikipedia editors, Radio 5, the digital language services company Tilde, information campaign supported by Delfi.
A special type of message with null content called a bang is used to initiate events and push data into flow, much like pushing a button. Pd's native objects range from the basic mathematical, logical, and bitwise operators found in every programming language to general and specialized audio-rate DSP functions (designated by a tilde (~) symbol), such as wavetable oscillators, the Fast Fourier transform (fft~), and a range of standard filters. Data can be loaded from file, read in from an audio board, MIDI, via Open Sound Control (OSC) through a FireWire, USB, or network connection, or generated on the fly, and stored in tables, which can then be read back and used as audio signals or control data.
On the cruise, Tannen is distracted by the prospect of picking up women, including French archaeologist Marie (Marie-Christine Barrault), often leaving the kids to fend for themselves for entertainment. He reserves a table for five in the dining room, secretly expecting to find an adult female companion for the fifth chair. Youngest son Truman-Paul (Robby Kiger) has a learning disability, which Tannen impatiently pushes him to overcome. Adopted oldest son Trung (Son Hoang Bui) is caught stealing food from the ship's galley and trying to order drinks with a phony ID. Their sister Tilde (Roxana Zal) is a sensible and sensitive girl, but much too young to act as a parental influence to the boys.
The manor of Gidesha(m)In the Domesday Book the last letter is omitted as indicated by a tilde is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as the 15th of the 28 holdings of Gotshelm, held in chief of King William the Conqueror. No tenant is listed, suggesting he held it in demesne. His 17th holding was a certain Come, which however is supposed by Thorne (1985) to represent Coombe in the parish of Uplowman,Thorne, part 2 (notes), 25,17 not Combe in Gittisham. Gotshelm was the brother of Walter de Claville, another of the Devon Domesday Book tenants-in-chief and the lands of both brothers later formed part of the Feudal barony of Gloucester.
After Harry is shot by Valentine and left for dead, his codename of Galahad passes to Eggsy. In Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Eggsy has since inherited Harry's home and is in a relationship with Crown Princess Tilde of Sweden, who he saved during the Valentine incident. One night, he has dinner with the Royal Family of Sweden, which indirectly saves him from being killed along with all the other Kingsman agents in Britain in the hands of the Golden Circle. Eggsy and Merlin get help from the American spy organisation Statesman to figure out the Golden Circle's motives, only to discover that Harry is alive and has been under their care for over a year.
The magazine was initially named Dor Muineachi Rotti Povitra Jesucha Calzachem Devoçãõ Vaddounchi. In Latin script Devoçãõ is written with a single extended tilde above both the a and the o Fr. Vincent Lobo, from Sangolda in Goa, curator at the St. Patrick's Church in Karachi, began it in 1915, to cater to the large number of Konkani-speaking people there, as there was no other Konkani spiritual literature. Its stated intention is to spread the devotion to the Christian idea of the Sacred Heart of Jesus; The name was changed subsequently to Dor Muiniachi Rotti, Concanim Messenger of the Sacred Heart. On Fr. Vincent Lobo's death on 11 November 1922, Fr. António Ludovico Pereira, also from Sangolda, took over.
Already in medieval Latin palaeography, the sign that in Spanish came to be called virgulilla (meaning "little comma") was used over a vowel to indicate a following nasal consonant (n or m) that had been omitted, as in tãtus for tantus or quã for quam. This usage was passed on to other languages using the Latin alphabet although it was subsequently dropped by most. Spanish retained it, however, in some specific cases, particularly to indicate the palatal nasal, the sound that is now spelt as ñ. The word tilde comes from Spanish, derived by metathesis of the word título as tidlo, this originally from Latin TITVLVS "title" or "heading"; compare cabildo with Latin CAPITULUM.
It is dedicated to the spreading of the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and was initially named Dor Muineachi Rotti Povitra Jesucha Calzachem Devoçãõ Vaddounchi. Note that the til (tilde mark) over ãõ in Devoçãõ is one single til. Fr. Vincent Lobo, from Sangolda in Goa, who was then curator at the St. Patrick's Church in Karachi, began it in 1915, to feed the spiritual thirst and hunger of the large number of Konkani speaking people there, on noticing the absence of Konkani spiritual literature. The name was changed subsequently to "Dor Muiniachi Rotti, Concanim Messenger of the Sacred Heart". On Fr. Vincent Lobo's passing away on 11 November 1922, Fr. António Ludovico Pereira, also from Sangolda, took over the responsibility.
In an unknown alien galaxy far away from the Milky Way, a war is waging between the Tilde Fleet, a group of human-like people and mysteriously violent robotic vehicles known as the Ver’mith led by the mysterious young woman Faintear. Two humanoid-soldiers belonging to the Triggerheart strike team, Exelica and programmed sister Crueltear, were busily fighting the Ver’mith during an attack when a portal opened and sucked the two young women in. Materializing on planet Earth, Exelica and Crueltear soon made Earth their new home as they had no means of return until a new portal opened and the Ver'mith appeared. Intent on making Earth their primary fortress of attack, the Ver'mith quickly make short work of Earth's Defenses.
The most popular extension is Windows code page 932 (a CCSID also used for IBM's extension to Shift JIS), which is registered with the IANA as "Windows-31J", separately from Shift JIS. This was popularized by Microsoft, although Microsoft itself does not recognize the Windows-31J name and instead calls that variation "shift_jis". IBM's code page 943 includes the same double-byte codes as Microsoft's code page 932, while IBM's code page 932 includes fewer extensions (excluding those which Microsoft incorporates from NEC), and retains the character order from the 1978 edition of JIS X 0208, rather than implementing the character variant swaps from the 1983 standard. Windows-31J assigns 0x5C to U+005C REVERSE SOLIDUS (the backslash), and 0x7E to U+007E TILDE, following US-ASCII.
Its form was copied from the Latin letter barred O (Ɵ ɵ) used in Jaꞑalif and other alphabets. Despite having a similar shape, it is related neither to the Greek letter theta (Θ θ/ϑ) nor to the archaic Cyrillic letter fita (Ѳ ѳ). However, traditional forms of Cyrillic fita (since the 18th century) and oe are identical, and designers of Unicode's sample font were probably the first ones who split glyphs of the two letters (providing Oe with a horizontal bar and Fita with a tilde-shaped bar inside). In traditional typography, the shape of the inner line depends on typeface, not on meaning of the letter: the bar in both oe and fita may either be straight or wavy.
In medieval manuscripts, other digraphs could also be written using superscripts: in bluome ("flower"), for example, the o was frequently placed above the u, although this letter ů survives now only in Czech. Compare also the development of the tilde as a superscript n. In blackletter handwriting, as used in German manuscripts of the later Middle Ages and also in many printed texts of the early modern period, the superscript e still had a form that would now be recognisable as an e, but in manuscript writing, umlauted vowels could be indicated by two dots since the late medieval period. Unusual umlaut designs are sometimes also created for graphic design purposes, such as to fit an umlaut into tightly-spaced lines of text.
The version of the G0 set for the OCR-B font registered with the ISO-IR registry as ISO-IR-92 is the Japanese (JIS X 9010 / JIS C 6229) version, which differs from the encoding defined by ISO 2033 only in being based on JIS-Roman (with a dollar sign at 0x24 and a Yen sign at 0x5C) rather than on the ISO 646 IRV (with a backslash at 0x5C and, at the time, a universal currency sign (¤) at 0x24). Besides those code points, it differs from ASCII only in omitting the at sign (@) and tilde (~). An additional supplementary set registered as ISO-IR-93 assigns the pound sign (£), universal currency sign (¤) and section sign (§) to their ISO-8859-1 codepoints, and the backslash to the ISO-8859-1 codepoint for the Yen sign.
For example, the code point U+006E (the Latin lowercase "n") followed by U+0303 (the combining tilde "◌̃") is defined by Unicode to be canonically equivalent to the single code point U+00F1 (the lowercase letter "ñ" of the Spanish alphabet). Therefore, those sequences should be displayed in the same manner, should be treated in the same way by applications such as alphabetizing names or searching, and may be substituted for each other. Similarly, each Hangul syllable block that is encoded as a single character may be equivalently encoded as a combination of a leading conjoining jamo, a vowel conjoining jamo, and, if appropriate, a trailing conjoining jamo. Sequences that are defined as compatible are assumed to have possibly distinct appearances, but the same meaning in some contexts.
The grave accent can be generated by striking the ` key (in the French AZERTY layout it is located to the right of the "ù" key) on Macintosh keyboards, while on PC-type keyboards it can be generated by using the combination . In the Belgian AZERTY layout, the ' key is generated by the combination ; the μ key is located to the right of the ù key on Belgian AZERTY keyboards) then the key for the vowel requiring the accent. Note that the grave-accented letters à è ù (and the acute-accented é), which are part of French orthography, have their own separate keys. Dead-grave and dead-acute (and dead-tilde) would mostly be reserved to "foreign" letters such as Italian ò, Spanish á í ó ú ñ, Portuguese ã õ, etc.
64-bit Hamilton C shell on a Windows 7 desktop. The C shell was extremely successful in introducing a large number of innovations including the history mechanism, aliases, tilde notation, interactive filename completion, an expression grammar built into the shell, and more, that have since been copied by other Unix shells. But in contrast to sh, which has spawned a large number of independently-developed clones, including ksh and bash, only two csh clones are known. (Since tcsh was based on the csh code originally written by Bill Joy, it is not considered a clone.) In 1986, Allen Holub wrote On Command: Writing a Unix-Like Shell for MS-DOS, a book describing a program he had written called "SH" but which in fact copied the language design and features of csh, not sh.
The version of Shift-JIS originating from the classic Mac OS (known as `x-mac- japanese`, Code page 10001 or MacJapanese) assigned the tilde to 0x7E (following US-ASCII, not which assigns the overline here), but the Yen sign to 0x5C (as in and standard ). It also extended by assigning the backslash to 0x80 (corresponding to 0x5C in US-ASCII), the non-breaking space to 0xA0, the copyright sign to 0xFD, the trademark symbol to 0xFE and the half-width horizontal ellipsis to 0xFF. It also added extended double byte characters; including 53 vertical presentation forms in the range 0xEB41-0xED96, at 84 JIS rows down from their canonical forms, and 260 special characters in the Shift_JIS range 0x8540-0x886D. This variant was introduced in KanjiTalk version 7.
Depending on the keyboard layout, which differs amongst countries, it is more or less easy to enter letters with diacritics on computers and typewriters. Some have their own keys; some are created by first pressing the key with the diacritic mark followed by the letter to place it on. Such a key is sometimes referred to as a dead key, as it produces no output of its own but modifies the output of the key pressed after it. In modern Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems, the keyboard layouts US International and UK International feature dead keys that allow one to type Latin letters with the acute, grave, circumflex, diaeresis, tilde, and cedilla found in Western European languages (specifically, those combinations found in the ISO Latin-1 character set) directly: + gives ë, + gives õ, etc.
Lynne Truss attributes an early form of the modern question mark in western language to Alcuin of York. Truss describes the punctus interrogativus of the late 8th century as "a lightning flash, striking from right to left".Typografie.info (The punctuation system of Aelius Donatus, current through the Early Middle Ages, used only simple dots at various heights.) This earliest question mark was a decoration of one of these dots, with the "lightning flash" perhaps meant to denote intonation, and perhaps associated with early musical notation like neumes. Another possibility is that it was originally a tilde or titlo, as in , one of many wavy or more or less slanted marks used in medieval texts for denoting things such as abbreviations, which would later become various diacritics or ligatures.
Oxford English Dictionary From spellings of anno abbreviated as año, as explained above, the tilde was thenceforth transferred to the n and kept as a useful expedient to indicate the new palatal nasal sound that Spanish had developed in that position: año. The sign was also adopted for the same palatal nasal in all other cases, even when it did not derive from an original nn, as in leña (from Latin ligna) or señor (from Latin SENIOR). Other Romance languages have different spellings for this sound: Italian and French use gn, a consonant cluster that had evolved from Latin, whereas Occitan, Vietnamese and Portuguese chose nh and Catalan (ny) even though these digraphs had no etymological precedent. When Morse code was extended to cover languages other than English, the sequence ( — — · — — ) was allotted for this character.
It uses five tone markers that can go on top (or below) any of the 12 vowels (a, ă, â, e, ê, i, o, ô, ơ, u, ư, y); e.g.: grave accent (à, ằ, ầ, è, ề, ì, ò, ồ, ờ, ù, ừ, ỳ), hook above (ả, ẳ, ẩ, ẻ, ể, ỉ, ỏ, ổ, ở, ủ, ử, ỷ), tilde (ã, ẵ, ẫ, ẽ, ễ, ĩ, õ, ỗ, ỡ, ũ, ữ, ỹ), acute accent (á, ắ, ấ, é, ế, í, ó, ố, ớ, ú, ứ, ý), and dot below (ạ, ặ, ậ, ẹ, ệ, ị, ọ, ộ, ợ, ụ, ự, ỵ). It also uses several digraphs and trigraphs ch, gh, gi, kh, ng, ngh, nh, ph, th, tr but they are no longer considered letters. # ↑↑↑↑ Walloon has the digraphs and trigraphs: ae, ch, dj, ea, jh, oe, oen, oi, sch, sh, tch, xh.
US International keyboard layout United Kingdom Extended keyboard layout Since the standard US keyboard layout in Microsoft Windows offers no way of inputting any sort of diacritic or accent, this makes it unsuitable for all but a handful of languages unless the US International layout is used. The US International layout changes the (grave), (tilde), (circumflex), (double quote, to make diaeresis), and (apostrophe, to make acute accent) keys into dead keys for producing accented characters: thus for example (release) will produce . The US International layout also uses the right alt (AltGr) as a modifier to enter special characters. The equivalent mapping for UK/Irish keyboards is called the "UK Extended" layout which, if activated in settings, will allow the user to enter a wide variety of diacritics (such as grave accents) which are not accommodated by the standard UK/Irish layout.
In order to symbolically distinguish between a type-1 fuzzy set and a type-2 fuzzy set, a tilde symbol is put over the symbol for the fuzzy set; so, A denotes a type-1 fuzzy set, whereas à denotes the comparable type-2 fuzzy set. When the latter is done, the resulting type-2 fuzzy set is called a "general type-2 fuzzy set" (to distinguish it from the special interval type-2 fuzzy set). Zadeh didn't stop with type-2 fuzzy sets, because in that 1976 paper he also generalized all of this to type-n fuzzy sets. The present article focuses only on type-2 fuzzy sets because they are the next step in the logical progression from type-1 to type-n fuzzy sets, where n = 1, 2, … . Although some researchers are beginning to explore higher than type-2 fuzzy sets, as of early 2009, this work is in its infancy.
For consistency with some older standards, Unicode provides single code points for many characters that could be viewed as modified forms of other characters (such as U+00F1 for "ñ" or U+00C5 for "Å") or as combinations of two or more characters (such as U+FB00 for the ligature "ff" or U+0132 for the Dutch letter "IJ") For consistency with other standards, and for greater flexibility, Unicode also provides codes for many elements that are not used on their own, but are meant instead to modify or combine with a preceding base character. Examples of these combining characters are the combining tilde and the Japanese diacritic dakuten ("◌゛", U+3099). In the context of Unicode, character composition is the process of replacing the code points of a base letter followed by one or more combining characters into a single precomposed character; and character decomposition is the opposite process. In general, precomposed characters are defined to be canonically equivalent to the sequence of their base letter and subsequent combining diacritic marks, in whatever order these may occur.
Each JIS X 0208 character is given a name. By using a character's name, it is possible to identify characters without relying on their codes. The names of characters are coordinated with other character set standards, notably the Universal Coded Character Set (UCS/Unicode), so this is one possible source of character mappings to character sets such as Unicode. For example, both the character at ISO/IEC 646 International Reference Version (US-ASCII) column 4 line 1 and the one at JIS X 0208 row 3 cell 33 have the name "LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A". Therefore, the character at 4/1 in ASCII and the character at 3-33 in JIS X 0208 can be regarded as the same character (although, in practice, alternative mapping is used for the JIS X 0208 character due to encodings providing ASCII separately). Conversely, ASCII characters 2/2 (quotation mark), 2/7 (apostrophe), 2/13 (hyphen-minus), and 7/14 (tilde) can be determined to be characters that do not exist in this standard.
Since the height of the vowels a, e and o is also distinctive in stressed syllables (see Portuguese phonology), high stressed vowels were marked with a circumflex accent, â, ê, ô, to be differentiated from the low stressed vowels written á, é, ó. The choice of the acute for low vowels and the circumflex for high vowels went against the conventions of other Romance languages such as French or Italian, but it was already commonplace in Portuguese before the 20th century. (In many words, Portuguese ê and ô correspond to the Latin long vowels ē, ō.) Nasal vowels and nasal diphthongs usually appear before the orthographic nasal consonants n, m, in which case they do not need to be identified with diacritics, but the tilde was placed on nasal a and nasal o when they occurred before another letter, or at the end of a word. Although the vowel u can also be nasal before other vowels, this happens in so few words (mui, muito, muita, muitos, muitas) that marking its nasality was not considered necessary.
Various ways for improving Akritas–Collins bisection algorithm have been proposed. They include a method for avoiding storing a long list of polynomials without losing the simplicity of the changes of variables, the use of approximate arithmetic (floating point and interval arithmetic) when it allows getting the right value for the number of sign variations, the use of Newton's method when possible, the use of fast polynomial arithmetic, shortcuts for long chains of bisections in case of clusters of close roots, bisections in unequal parts for limiting instability problems in polynomial evaluation. All these improvement lead to an algorithm for isolating all real roots of a polynomial with integer coefficients, which has the complexity (using soft O notation, , for omitting logarithmic factors) :\tilde O (n^2(k+t)), where is the degree of the polynomial, is the number of nonzero terms, is the maximum of digits of the coefficients. The implementation of this algorithm appears to be more efficient than any other implemented method for computing the real roots of a polynomial, even in the case of polynomials having very close roots (the case which was previously the most difficult for the bisection method).
