As well as producing ales, the brewery also ran three pubs within York, namely The Three-Legged Mare, The Last Drop Inn and The Yorkshire Terrier Inn, and one, Mr. Foley's Cask Ale House, in Leeds. The Yorkshire Terrier was not acquired by Black Sheep Brewery when York Brewery was purchased out of administration in December 2018 leaving two premises in York, The Three-Legged Mare and The Last Drop Inn, and one in Leeds. York Brewery beers are however available in many other pubs throughout York and the wider Yorkshire area.

This walkway provides further access to restaurants and bars such as: R-Bar, the Big Bang piano bar, Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant, Buca di Beppo and the Three Legged Mare. The pedestrian bridge often serves as a meeting point for those attending events at Nationwide Arena.

York Brewery opened in May 1996 in York, England, using the disused brewery equipment of Lions Original Brews from Burnley and was the first brewery within the city walls for 40 years. Faced with difficulty in finding outlets for their beer, the brewery opened its first pub, The Last Drop, in a 17th century, grade II listed building in Colliergate, York, 2000. A second pub, the Three Legged Mare, opened in High Petergate, York, in July 2001. In 2007, it expanded so to increase its output by 50 per cent to 150 barrels a week.

1975 Executions were held on a scaffold erected over the stone steps in front of the central doorway, within the small enclosure created by closing the gates of the iron railings. The drop was described as approximately level with the lintel of the door. Three small square stone insets in the steps are, in local legend, the sockets where the "Three-legged Mare" scaffold feet were set, but this design of scaffold was never used at Nottingham and the steps themselves post-date the 1876 fire (see below) and public hangings.

Various explanations have been put forward for the etymology of 'Three Legged Cross', which is recorded as a toponym from the sixteenth century onwards. One theory is that a type of gibbet known as a 'three-legged mare' once stood here;A. D. Mills, Dorset Place-Names (1986), p. 144. another theory is that there may once have been a boundary stone in the area marking the convergence of three great estates: Lord Shaftesbury's to the west, Lord Normanton's to the north and east, and the nineteenth-century banking family, the Rolles-Fryer's, to the south.

He was dragged naked behind a horse to Tyburn, where he was hanged. In 1537, Henry VIII used Tyburn to execute the ringleaders of the Pilgrimage of Grace, including Sir Nicholas Tempest, one of the northern leaders of the Pilgrimage and the King's own Bowbearer of the Forest of Bowland.RW Hoyle, The Pilgrimage of Grace and the Politics of the 1530s (Oxford University Press: Oxford 2001) In 1571, the Tyburn Tree was erected near the junction of today's Edgware Road, Bayswater Road and Oxford Street, 200 metres west of Marble Arch. The "Tree" or "Triple Tree" was a form of gallows, consisting of a horizontal wooden triangle supported by three legs (an arrangement known as a "three-legged mare" or "three-legged stool"). Several criminals could thus be hanged at once, and so the gallows were used for mass executions, such as on 23 June 1649 when 24 prisoners—23 men and one woman—were hanged simultaneously, having been conveyed there in eight carts.
