Flashbacks show both the build-up to, and the event of Jack's wedding to Sarah, a former patient whom he "fixed" after she was injured in a car accident. Jack agonizes over his vows, and his father, Christian (John Terry) surprises him by showing up, giving Jack advice about writing the vows by the pool. His father says that Jack's strength is commitment, and that his problem is that he is "just not good at letting go." Jack thinks over his father's words, and eventually writes his vows just in time for the ceremony, finally settling on extolling how Sarah has "fixed" him.

The "serial killings" must be a sham by the administration of the other town, to scare the scientist and the university away from Medicine Creek. The Sheriff becomes so enamored of his theory that he appeals to Pendergast's regional F.B.I. superior, to have him removed from the case. Corrie is surprised, and upset, when Pendergast appears to passively accept this, and gently informs her that her services are no longer required. Unwilling to give up, Corrie thinks over the case at home, and comes up with an interesting clue: one of the killer's victims was, unusually, boiled whole.

In present day, Batman chases down victims controlled by the villainess Spellbinder to commit crimes, one of them being Commissioner Gordon. After subduing them all, he discovers Spellbinder is actually being controlled by forces unknown, and finds the dummy Scarface that gives him an invitation card for a party held at Bristol, where Wayne Manor is, alerting him that someone knows who is behind the mask. Returning to the Batcave in the Batmobile, Bruce Wayne thinks over how things have changed: he's pushing 50, and not longer in his prime; and he has since abandoned his playboy persona to become a Howard Hughes-inspired recluse. By morning, as he thinks about the card, Bruce finds himself in his mother's gardens where he discovers a woman who has somehow trespassed into.
