Robert Hall used "Mr Potter Takes a Rest Cure" as an example of a Wodehouse short story where the romantic element is only a minor part of the story and treated farcically, as in Gandle's interrupted proposal of marriage to Bobbie Wickham, in contrast to stories in which romance plays a larger role or is not involved at all. In the opening scene, Emma and her Halloween-loving husband Henry return home after a celebratory night. Henry takes a rest in his house while Emma begins tearing down the seasonal decorations before the night's end, and is murdered by an unseen assailant. This unique cultural event is over three hundred years old, and likely pagan in origin. Traditionally, the first officer sits on the right-hand side of a fixed-wing aircraft ("right seat") and the left-hand side of a helicopter (the reason for this difference is related to the fact that in many cases the pilot flying is unable to release the right hand from the cyclic control to operate the instruments, thus he or she sits on the right side and does that with the left hand). The Pen and Ink Club is a fictional club for writers referenced in several stories, including the 1916 novel Uneasy Money (chapter 2) and the 1961 novel Ice in the Bedroom (chapter 10), as well as the short story "Mr Potter Takes a Rest Cure". Ukridge's Aunt Julia is president of the club, and it is featured in several Ukridge stories such as "Ukridge Sees Her Through". Rosie M. Banks appears to be a member, since she attends the club's annual dinner in the Drones Club story "Leave it to Algy". Wodehouse may have drawn inspiration for the club from the Authors' Club, since he played cricket for its associated cricket team, the Authors XI. According to Wodehouse scholar Norman Murphy, the writers association PEN International may have been a source of inspiration for the club.
