Renuka sympathises with his plight and they travel to Vijayawada to meet Yohaa's friend Varadhan (Rajesh), a sub-inspector of police, who will help him out of his problems.

When Sutherland is tricked into making a harsh criticism of the British and Foreign Bible Society, claiming that the text of the Bible without clerical guidance is more likely to lead to wickedness than to Christian faith and virtue, his doubts are revealed, and he is forced to resign his position. Sutherland travels to Como to rest and recover from illness, indulging in free religious speculation while there. He befriends Helen Leonard, who sympathises with his troubles and listens to his doubts. Helen's dull, unloving husband prefers to spend time away from his wife, and leaves her in Sutherland's company for the season.

Due to her long absence from Mêlée Island, Elaine has been declared dead and the position of governor of the Tri-Island Area is opened for election. LeChuck assumes the guise of "Charles L. Charles" and defeats Elaine in the election: the townspeople, feeling neglected by Elaine's long absence, do not believe her efforts to convince them of Charles' true nature. Now in control of Mêlée Island, Mandrill and LeChuck acquire the Ultimate Insult and maroon Guybrush on Monkey Island.

Fletcher advises McLaren about his wild ways, stressing that he is his own worst enemy, but sympathises with him when he learns that the prison governor and the prison's welfare officer will not help him seek counselling for his problems. Later that day, McLaren gets into an altercation during a football match with a rival player, and is sent off by prison officer Mackay, who is refereeing the game. While watching the match, Barrowclough expresses concern that he will be dropped from the prison team if he continues to behave in this manner. A short while later, Fletcher is informed that McLaren is holding a rooftop protest and refuses to come down.

One day while a Thevalli is doing a prashanam (astrological prediction) asks Ananthan for an opinion in front of all the assembled nambodiris, Puthedan insults Ananthan based on his birth, Anathan leaves abruptly, he is followed by Mekkadan who sympathises with him and welcomes him to study atharvaveda. Later when Anathan and his lover are caught by the Putheddan, who drags his daughter away and beats up Ananthan and burns his house, anathan's old mother is not able to escape and dies in the fire. This prompts Ananthan to seek vengeance and wreak havoc in his village, he seeks out Mekkadan, and offers to become his disciple, they move on to a remote location and practice Dark Magic. Later on Mekkadan dies, but Anathan continues this leads to severe calamities and deaths in his village.

She sympathises fully with his misfortunes, when he obligingly describes the unfair treatment to which he was subjected: Darcy had, through pure jealousy, refused to respect the will of his late father who had promised him the enjoyment of ecclesiastical property belonging to the family, forcing him to enlist in the militia to live.
