Although the city had strong fortifications and was well supplied with troops and supplies, the departure of the king severely impacted morale of the defenders, and the populance began to flee in panic. Korean General Gim Myeongweon, together with government minister Yun Doo-su, were left in charge of the defenses with nominally 10,000 men under their command.

The Rao at length compromised with his son allowing him to keep Mundra on condition that he would dismiss Punja. On hearing of Punja's murder, Ghulam Shah gathered another army of 50,000 men, and re- entered Kutch by the Nara route. Nara he again found deserted, and except at the small fort of Muru, where a Rajput garrison of eighty men resisted and were all massacred, he advanced unopposed within sight of Bhuj. Encamping at Rodar Mata within five miles of the town, he despatched his minister, Gidomal, with some men of distinction to demand, as had before been promised, the Rao's sister in marriage. Godji, well supplied with troops and resources, received the envoys with little courtesy, and refused to give any satisfactory answer.

In December 1850 war broke out with the Xhosa and some of the Khoikhoi; Sir Harry Smith was insufficiently supplied with troops from England; and though his conduct of the operations was warmly approved by the Duke of Wellington and other military authorities, Earl Grey, in a dispatch never submitted to the queen, recalled him in 1852 before the Xhosa and Khoikhoi had been completely subdued. He protested strongly against the abandonment of the Orange River Sovereignty to the Boers, which was carried out two years after his departure, and he actively furthered the granting of responsible government to Cape Colony.
