Finally on 9 March as Tirpitz headed for home, she was sighted by aircraft from Victorious and attacked, though also without success. PQ 12 arrived at Murmansk on 12 March.

Despite flyers being dropped by airplanes in his hiding area, he adamantly believed that the war was not over yet. At one point about halfway across, the 16th Alabama suddenly halted; Adams ordered the 33rd to stop, as well. The two regiments resumed their advance after about ten minutes or so, though in the darkness they now had to deal with stragglers firing on them from behind, as well as the enemy to their front. One incident of friendly fire claimed the life of Lieutenant Alfred Moore, who was accidentally shot in the neck from behind by a straggler.

21 he led a flight of P-51s on an escort mission to Merseburg, Germany. As the bombers left their target, a large formation of enemy fighters struck. Commanding officer of 487th Fighter Squadron, John C. Meyer (now a lieutenant colonel) told Whisner to take a straggler in one of the enemy's three six-ship cover flights. In a linked series of attacks, Whisner shot down four Fw 190s in the cover flight and probably got another.

On the evening of 9 July U-43 sank the unescorted 3,944 ton British merchant ship Aylesbury about southeast of Ireland. Hit by two torpedoes, the ship sank in 15 minutes. All 35 crew survived. U-43s fourth and final success on her fourth patrol took place on the morning of 17 July when she sank the 3,509-ton British merchant ship Fellside, a straggler from convoy OA-184, about north-west of Bloody Foreland (Cnoc Fola), Donegal.

William John Yokes was born in Franklin, Pennsylvania, on 15 November 1918. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Cleveland, Ohio, on 3 January 1942. Yokes was a seaman second class attached to the Naval Armed Guard detachment aboard the merchant ship SS Steel Navigator, a straggler from Convoy ON-137, in the North Atlantic Ocean in October 1942. For several days, heavy seas and high winds had caused a dangerous shift in ballast in Steel Navigator.

In 1940, a replacement, Pilot Officer T. B. "Septic" Baird (John Gregson), is landing his Hawker Hurricane at "Pimpernel" Squadron's airfield. Just as he touches down, however, a straggler from an earlier mission taxis across his path. Septic's quick reactions allow him to "leapfrog" the other Hurricane, averting a costly disaster. His action, however, causes him to crash his replacement aircraft into the bungalow of Squadron Leader Barry Clinton (Cyril Raymond) at the end of the runway.

The following morning, Admiral Otto Ciliax, commanding the operation, ordered the destroyers to search independently for Allied ships and they stumbled across the Soviet freighter , a straggler from QP 8 later that afternoon and sank her. Tirpitz rejoined them shortly afterwards and Ciliax ordered Ihn to Harstad to refuel. The destroyer rejoined the battleship in the morning and was able to shoot down one of five Fairey Albacore torpedo bombersWhitley, pp. 133–34 from the aircraft carrier Rohwer, p.

Hawkes was born John Marvin Perkins in Alexandria, Minnesota, the son of Patricia Jeanne (née Olson) and Peter John "Pete" Perkins, a farmer of wheat, corn, hogs and cattle. He was raised in a "pastoral, small city... a midwest Scandinavian community." Hawkes graduated from Jefferson High School and moved to Austin, Texas, where he was a member of the bands Meat Joy, with Gretchen Phillips, and King Straggler, with fellow actors Rodney Eastman and Brentley Gore.

On 27 January 1942 U-442 attacked the American Liberty Ship Julia Ward Howe, a straggler from convoy UGS-4. The first torpedo hit on the starboard side, blowing off a hatch cover, wrecking two lifeboats and destroying the radio equipment. The ship immediately took on a 15-degree list but flooded slowly, gradually righting herself to an even keel. Three shots were fired from the merchantman's defensive 5-inch gun, but no hits were scored.

Their first job is to round up a group of Jewish refugees coming ashore from a ship, who are taken to a detention centre. The forced showers and captivity behind wire fences remind Len of what he has seen in Germany. Returning to the beach Len finds a straggler, and is about to let her go when they are spotted by a passing patrol. Len is reprimanded; his commander emphasises the danger of Arab insurrection if Jewish immigration is not controlled.

Under a new commander, Korvettenkapitän Wilhelm Dommes, U-178 sailed from Bordeaux on 28 March 1943, and repeated the success of her previous patrol, this time in the waters of the Mozambique Channel. Her first victory came on 1 June in a hit- and-run attack on Convoy CD-20. U-178 fired two torpedoes, one of which struck the Dutch cargo ship Salabangka, which later sank. On 4 July she attacked the Norwegian steamer Breiviken, a straggler from Convoy DN-50.

At 5am on 26 August Implacable caught up with a Russian straggler, the 74-gun Vsevolod (also Sewolod), under Captain Rudnew (or Roodneff). Vsevolod burning, after the action with the Implacable and Centaur, August 26, 1808 Implacable and Vsevolod exchanged fire for about 20 minutes before Vsevolod ceased firing. Vsevolod hauled down her colours, but Hood recalled Implacable because the Russian fleet was approaching. During the fight Implacable lost six dead and 26 wounded; Vsevolod lost some 48 dead and 80 wounded.

7.97, spectral type B0.5V), a Be star notable for its X-rays emission. It has been categorised by Moffat & Vogt (1973), Mermilliod (1982), and Safi-Harb (2007), as a blue straggler, and it has also been categorised as a gamma Cassiopeiae analog. HD 119682 has been identified as the visual counterpart of the X-ray source 1WGA J1346.5-6255, found within the radio lobes of the supernova remnant G309.2-00.6, located 4 ± 2 kpc away, with which it is unrelated.

U-147s first patrol was preceded by a short trip from Kiel to Bergen in Norway in February 1941. She then left the Nordic port on 22 February and headed for the Atlantic north and west of Scotland. She sank the Norwegian freighter Augvald a straggler from convoy HX 109, about north north-west of Ness in the Outer Hebrides on 2 March. Following this patrol Hardegen took command of and was succeeded by his first watch officer, Eberhard Wetjen.

The island is home to the endemic Amsterdam albatross, which breeds only on the Plateau des Tourbières. Other rare species are the brown skua, Antarctic tern and western rockhopper penguin. The Amsterdam duck is now extinct, as are the local breeding populations of several petrels. There was once possibly a species of rail inhabiting the island, as a specimen was taken in the 1790s (which has been lost), but this was either extinct by 1800 or was a straggler of an extant species.

The snipe breeds mainly in Hokkaidō in northern Japan, with smaller numbers on Honshū, the eastern Russian mainland and, historically, Sakhalin and the Kurile Islands. The entire population migrates and spends the non-breeding season principally in eastern Australia, where it is the commonest Gallinago snipe. It has been recorded on migration in Taiwan, the Philippines and New Guinea, and is a rare straggler to New Zealand. The snipe's breeding habitat in Asia includes alpine moorland, grasslands, rough pasture, young tree plantations and cultivated areas.

Alpha Fornacis A has a stellar classification of F8IV, where the luminosity class IV indicates this is a subgiant star that has just evolved off the main sequence. It has 33% more mass than the Sun and is an estimated 2.9 billion years old. The secondary, Alpha Fornacis B, has been identified as a blue straggler, and has either accumulated material from, or merged with, a third star in the past. It is a strong source of X-rays and is 78% as massive as the Sun.

U-502 departed Kiel on 29 September 1941, and ventured out into the mid-Atlantic. On 7 October, south of Iceland, she torpedoed the 14,795 ton British ship Svend Foyn, a straggler from Convoy HX 152 en route from New York to Liverpool, carrying fuel oil and aircraft and tanks as deck cargo. The former whale factory ship was damaged, but managed to escape and assisted by the , reached Reykjavík on 11 October. U-502 arrived in Lorient in occupied France on 9 November.

The regiment suffered heavy losses in the fighting and following this he joined the 395th Rifle Regiment. In the spring of 1920 Tanaschishin fought with the regiment in the Polish–Soviet War, fell seriously ill and became a straggler in Ukrainian People's Army territory. After recovering, he tried to rejoin his unit but was captured on 19 May and imprisoned in the Mogilyovsky Prison until July, when he was released by advancing Soviet troops. He joined the 535th Rifle Regiment, fighting against the Ukrainian People's Army.

There are 175 probable member stars within the angular radius of the cluster and 65 within the central part of the cluster. The tidal radius of the cluster is 7.4 - 10.2 parsecs (24 - 33 light years) and represents the average outer limit of NGC 5617, beyond which a star is unlikely to remain gravitationally bound to the cluster core. One blue straggler is possible member of the cluster. Possible members of the cluster are also a delta Scuti variable, a gamma Doradus variable and eclipsing variable stars.

In October, Tingey continued operations with Mitscher's fast carrier force. On 17 and 18 October, she supported strikes on Visayan Island, and, on the 24th, the carriers launched strikes in the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea. Steaming off San Bernardino Strait on the night of 25/26 October, Tingey joined with the battleships and cruisers of the task group to sink the Japanese destroyer Nowaki. This ill- fated ship was a straggler from Admiral Takeo Kurita's Center Force retiring from the Battle off Samar.

It was well known as a "high risk facility" to the Seattle Fire Department, and had been inspected six times between February 6, 1970, and one day before the fire. On the night of the fire, 42 of the 62 rooms were occupied. The fire was set in two places; in the main stairwell on the first floor and in the rear of the second floor; a wayside straggler alerted the authorities. The fire quickly engulfed the two staircases and the lobby that separated them.

U-333 sailed from Kiel on 27 December 1941, through the North Sea, and into the Atlantic. On 1 January 1942 the U-boat was attacked by an unidentified enemy aircraft, but was not damaged. U-333 then joined the wolfpack 'Ziethen' on 17 January 1942, and at 20:45 on 22 January, attacked the 3,429-ton Greek merchant ship Vassilios A. Polemis, a straggler from Convoy ON 53. The ship, hit amidships by a single torpedo, broke in two and sank within ten minutes.

On U-156's fourth patrol (20 August 1942 – 16 November 1942), Hartenstein sank and then organised the rescue of the survivors of RMS Laconia, resulting in the "Laconia incident" and "Laconia Order". U-156 together with under the command of Karl-Friedrich Merten departed from Lorient on 20 August 1942 heading for the Bay of Biscay. Hartenstein received the order to operate against Convoy SL-119 on 25 August. After a two-day pursuit, U-156 found a straggler, the SS Clan Macwhirter, west of Casablanca.

Her first voyage proved uneventful, although the return from Casablanca was enlivened by the investigation of sound contacts. On 29 July, the destroyer escort left her station to guard a tanker, , which had fallen behind due to engine failure. Long, anxious hours ensued as Wyffels circled the disabled ship while repairs were being made; she then escorted the straggler back to her convoy. From August 1943-April 1945, Wyffels, with occasional interruptions for exercises off the New England coast, conducted 10 more successful circuit voyages escorting convoys to and from North Africa.

U-468 sailed for the first time from Kiel on 28 January 1943, stopping briefly at Kristiansand in Norway, before heading out into the mid-Atlantic. On 12 March, U-468 sank the British 6,537 ton tanker Empire Light southeast of Cape Farewell (Greenland) with two torpedoes. The tanker, a straggler from Convoy ON-168, had been damaged by a torpedo from on 7 March, and abandoned by her surviving crew. The U-boat arrived at her new home port of La Pallice in occupied France on 27 March.

Colonel Deland, commander of Fort Douglas, labeled him a "straggler." By December 4 he was back in Adams U. S. Army General Hospital in Memphis where he was called a "convalescent" with the notation that he had returned from "Desertion, furlough." After three months he was considered fit for duty, even though he still carried a diagnosis of chronic diarrhea, and was back aboard the R. C. Wood bound for Nashville. When he got there on March 19, 1864 he was admitted to Cumberland U. S. Army General Hospital with a diagnosis of chronic bronchitis.

On 1 September, Bayntun took part in the hunt for the killer of , a corvette that had been torpedoed north of Tory Island, but the search yielded no result. With the disbandment of Escort Group B 4, Bayntun was assigned to Escort Group 10, retaining Derry as her base of operations. On 27 October, she was detailed to shepherd , a straggler from Convoy KMS 67 from U-boats known to be in the vicinity and carried out attacks against a suspected U-boat. Again no wreckage appeared to suggest a successful attack.

Most remained encircled in the mountains and were eventually killed or captured. On 13 February, after straggler lines were set and after General Almond moved the division into corps reserve at Chup'o-ri, west of Chech'on, the division strength stood at 263 officers and slightly over 3,000 men, of whom about half were division service troops. Casualties, either dead or missing, stood at 323 officers (among them the commander and entire staff of the 10th Regiment, the executive officer of the 16th Regiment, seven battalion commanders and thirty company commanders) and 7,142 men.

Despite being about distant, debris from the explosion struck the surfaced U-boat, slightly injuring a crewman; the next day a shell without a fuze, which had been blown from the torpedoed was found lodged in the conning tower. On the evening of 30 November, the 4,868-ton British merchant ship Ashby, a straggler from Convoy OS-12, was hit by one of two torpedoes fired by U-43, south-south-east of Flores in the Azores. The ship sank within four minutes with the loss of 17 of her crew of 50.

U-195 departed Kiel on 20 March 1943 and sailed to the waters off South Africa where she sank two ships and damaged another. On 11 April she torpedoed the American 7,200 ton liberty ship James W. Denver about west of Las Palmas, Canary Islands. The ship, a straggler from Convoy UGS-7 en route from Baltimore to Casablanca, was loaded with sugar, acid, flour, aircraft parts, vehicles, bulldozers and had twelve P-38 Lightning aircraft as deck cargo. The crew of 69 abandoned ship in five lifeboats.

However, it has an excessive temperature for its luminosity, and thus is considered an extreme blue straggler. This is a second generation star formed through a collision of two low mass stars some 5–350 million years ago. The collision was either between two separate cluster members or the coalescence of a binary star system. With an effective temperature of 9,382 K, this is the hottest star in the cluster by about 1,200 K. It has 2.46 times the mass of the Sun and 2.72 times the Sun's radius.

Joyce departed New York 15 April for her second escort run to Northern Ireland. While screening for a straggler the following morning she was ordered to direct rescue operations for the gasoline tanker , which was torpedoed and set aflame while taking station in the convoy. After picking up 31 survivors, including the tanker's captain, Joyce detected a submarine by sonar at 0950 and pressed home an attack. She dropped a deadly pattern of 13 depth charges which forced to the surface, bow first, some 2,000 yards to her stern.

Freighters Bornholm and Berkel collided on the evening of the 25th as a moderate west-northwest gale reduced convoy speed to two or three knots. Bornholm began taking on water and left the convoy on the 26th attempting to reach Iceland. Vidette joined the convoy with three merchant ships from Iceland on the 26th while rescue trawler Northern Spray was standing by the straggling freighter Penhale until the straggler was ordered into Reykjavík so the trawler could rejoin the convoy. At noon on the 26th, BdU changed the Enigma machine cypher being used to transmit instructions to the U-boats.

The first transatlantic convoy left Hampton Roads on 24 May escorted by the armored cruiser , met up with eight destroyers from Devonport on 6 June, and brought all its ships save one straggler that was torpedoed, into their respective ports by 10 June. The first regular convoy left Hampton Roads on 15 June, the next left Sydney, Nova Scotia on 22 June, and another left New York for the first time on 6 July. The Sydney convoy had to be diverted to Halifax during winter months. The first regular convoy from the south Atlantic commenced on 31 July.

The brighter member (Ba) is a silicon star with a class of A0 IVpSi, while the fainter component (Bb) is of type A2. Component C has a class of K0 III, indicating it is an evolved giant star. The measured effective temperature of C is 5,500 K. The fact that component A most likely shares a common origin with C suggests that the former is much older than expected, and may actually be a blue straggler formed from the merger of a close binary. This could have been caused by the gravitational influence of an unseen companion of A.

This object is an A-type main-sequence star with a stellar classification of A8V. It is around 788 million years old with a fairly fast rotation rate, as its projected rotational velocity is about 155 km/s, so it must be rotating at least that fast. It has 1.86 times the mass of the Sun and 2.76 times the Sun's radius. 19 Aquarii is radiating 26 times the luminosity of the Sun from its photosphere at an effective temperature of 8,078 K. Eggen has this star flagged as a blue straggler and a member of the HR1614 supercluster.

The magnitude 4.35 primary, component A, appears to be an A-type subgiant star with a stellar classification of A2 IV. It is a candidate blue straggler and shows characteristics of an Am star. Abt (1985) gave it a classification of A2kA3hA5m, indicating that the spectrum displays the calcium K-line of an A2 star, the hydrogen lines of an A3 star and the metal lines of an A5 star. It is deficient in scandium but has enhanced iron peak and heavy elements. Although suspect of variability in the past, Delta3 Tauri A was subsequently determined to be photometrically constant.

Pierre le Grand is known only for his attack on a Spanish galleon near the coast of Hispaniola in the 17th century. The exact site of the attack is uncertain; Exquemelin at one point says the Caicos Islands were the scene of the crime, and at another point places the attack at Cape Tiburón, off the southwest coast of Hispaniola. Pierre had recruited a crew of 28 men on a single small boat and sailed in search of Spanish ships to rob. After a long, fruitless cruise, his buccaneer band spotted a ship, a straggler from the Spanish treasure fleet.

U-501 departed from Kiel on 2 July 1941 and sailed to Trondheim in Norway via Horten Naval Base also in Norway, by 15 July. From there she sailed on her first and only war patrol on 7 August 1941, heading out into the waters around Iceland. She sank the 2,000 ton Norwegian merchant ship Einvik, a straggler from Convoy SC 41 on 5 September, about 450 miles south-west of Iceland, with a torpedo and gunfire. The ship's distress signals were received and an aircraft sent to search for her, but it found nothing and reported that there were probably no survivors.

Female at Bharatpur, India In India, the species is widespread in the west, central highlands, and northern Gangetic plains extending east into the Assam valley, but rare in peninsular India and Sri Lanka. This distinctive stork is an occasional straggler in southern and eastern Pakistan, and is a confirmed breeding species in central lowland Nepal. It extends into Southeast Asia, through New Guinea and into the northern half of Australia. Compared to other large waterbirds like cranes, spoonbills and other species of storks, black-necked storks are least abundant in locations with a high diversity of waterbird species.

On 6 March, Tirpitz, escorted by Z25 and three other destroyers, sortied to attack the returning Convoy QP 8 and the Russia-bound PQ 12 as part of Operation Sportpalast (Sports Palace). The following morning, Admiral Otto Ciliax, commanding the operation, ordered the destroyers to search independently for Allied ships and they stumbled across the Soviet freighter , a straggler from QP 8, later that afternoon and sank her. Tirpitz rejoined them shortly afterwards and Ciliax ordered the destroyers back to Trondheim on the 8th after failing to refuel them the previous night due to heavy seas and icing.Whitley, pp.

He manages to jam his arm between the closing doors, but the people in reach shrink away. He frustratedly pulls his arm out of the door and, after glancing to his left, begins strolling nonchalantly past the train, its occupants jammed against the window watching him. The camera cuts ahead to reveal a lone straggler who failed to make it onto the train. As he spots the tagged man, he turns to flee and the commercial ends with the pair continuing the chase outside of the view of the camera, a superimposed swoosh accompanying the campaign tagline, "Play".

Commissioned into the 6th U-boat Flotilla, based at Kiel, U-43 left for her first combat patrol of the war on 6 November 1939, sailing around the British Isles and into the Atlantic. There, on 16 November, she attacked the 4,915 ton British merchant ship Arlington Court, a straggler from Convoy SL-7A, en route from Rosario, Argentina to Hull with a cargo of 7,340 tons of maize. The ship was hit by a single torpedo west-south-west of Start Point in Devon. The crew abandoned ship, the U-boat fired another torpedo, which sank the ship within 30 minutes.

During the crossing, her port boiler began to malfunction again on 14 February. With her speed reduced, she dropped out of the convoy and proceeded independently as a straggler, but after the boiler was repaired on 16 February she returned to full speed; forgoing the prescribed zigzag steaming pattern for stragglers, she managed to overtake and rejoin her convoy, and arrived with it at New York on 24 March 1945.Cooper, p. 12. John W. Brown was taken under repair by Atlantic Basin Iron Works in Brooklyn from 7 to 11 April to have her balky boiler fixed and have a gyrocompass installed.

As the stars traveled away, they went into normal stellar evolution, with one of them becoming a red giant and engulfing the other and forming one giant star -- a blue straggler. In 2008, a team of astronomers found a match between the star's chemical composition and the characteristics of stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Support that the star originated in the LMC was strengthened because the star is only 65,000 light years away from the nearby galaxy. Later observations using the Hubble Space Telescope showed that the star originated from the Milky Way's galactic center.

Matchless was one of six destroyers, led by Nimrod that were to patrol east of the Schouwen Bank. The German destroyers ran into a cruiser division, with the destroyers and heavily damaged, but the Germans managed to escape under the cover of a smokescreen. Nimrods group of destroyers headed north-east to cut-off the return route to the German Bight, but were ordered back to their station. The main group of German torpedo boats managed to sneak past the British patrols, but a straggler, , which was following the same route, ran into the five destroyers patrolling west of the Schouwen Bank.

Although an Englishman by birth, he devoted much of his energies to Scottish national subjects and purposes. Other paintings included Medea in the Island of Circe, several based on Arthurian legend, and several depicting the life of fishermen on the west coast of Scotland, exhibited in 1883–84.

Globular clusters have a very high star density, and therefore close interactions and near-collisions of stars occur relatively often. Due to these chance encounters, some exotic classes of stars, such as blue stragglers, millisecond pulsars, and low-mass X-ray binaries, are much more common in globular clusters. A “blue straggler” is thought to form from the merger of two stars, possibly as a result of an encounter with a binary system. The resulting star has a higher temperature than comparable stars in the cluster with the same luminosity, and thus differs from the main sequence stars formed at the beginning of the cluster.

The German destroyers ran into a cruiser division, with the destroyers and heavily damaged, but the Germans managed to escape, and passed Surprises group of destroyers unobserved before reaching Zeebrugge. One German straggler, encountered Milnes group. An exchange of fire followed, in which S50 was hit several times by British shells, but S50 managed to torpedo the British destroyer , which later sank, before escaping and returning to Germany. On 29 January 1917, the British were warned by radio intercepts of a potential sortie by German Forces, and the Harwich Force, including Milne was ordered out to intercept any German torpedo boats between Harwich and Lowestoft.

U-125 left Lorient for the last time on her seventh patrol on 13 April 1943. She joined the "wolfpack" "Fink" (English: Finch) of 28 U-boats which were attacking the convoy ONS-5 between 26 April and 6 May 1943. This was during a period when the British code-breakers were unable to read German U-boat signals while they could read British convoy signals, and ONS-5 was intercepted by a strong U-boat force during an Atlantic storm. Nevertheless, the boat only sank one ship, on 4 May south of Cape Farewell (Greenland), she was perhaps ironically called Lorient, a straggler from ONS-5; there were no survivors.

HMS Highlander joined that afternoon, a welcome addition as B4 was by this time reduced to five ships. During the night of the two convoys were running in tandem, though sailing independently. All attacks on both convoys were repelled this night, and six firm contacts were attacked but little damage was inflicted. One ship from HX 229 was lost, a romper which broke away to proceed independently; this ship, Matthew Luckenbach, ran into the melée around SC 122 and was torpedoed, to be sunk later on 19 March. A straggler from SC 122, Clarissa Radcliffe, was also sunk with all hands by U-663.

To cover trade with the neutral Netherlands, the British instituted their first regular convoy on 26 July 1916, from the Hook of Holland to Harwich, a route targeted by the German U-boats based out of Flanders. Only one straggler was lost before the Germans announced unrestricted submarine warfare on 1 February 1917, and only six after that before the war's end despite 1,861 sailings. The Holland convoys were sometimes referred to as the "Beef Trip" on account of the large proportion of food transported. They were escorted by destroyers of the Harwich Force and, later in the war, by AD Flying Boats based out of Felixstowe.

Galveston was assigned to Squadron 2 of the Atlantic Fleet Cruiser Force for convoy escort duties concurrent with the training of Armed Guard crews. After one convoy run through heavy weather from Tompkinsville to Halifax, Nova Scotia, she was largely employed in repeated convoy escort voyages between New York and Norfolk until 22 September 1918 when she departed Tompkinsville with a 19-ship convoy bound for Ponta Delgada, Azores. On the morning of 30 September a convoy straggler was attacked by German submarine . Alerted by the flashing explosion to starboard, Galveston headed for the scene of attack and opened fire on the U-boat.

The battalion participated in the final drive of the allied armies into Germany performing traffic control, operation of straggler control points, and suppression of violence between Russian and Polish displaced persons and German Civilians in and around the area of Dueren, Germany. Oakland and teamed up to recover downed pilots off Guam, and fired at targets on Orote Peninsula. At 0800 on 4 August, search planes reported a Japanese convoy zig-zagging out of Chichi Jima Bonin Islands. Two hours later, the carriers' planes reported they were attacking enemy vessels. Studies of the trajectory and speed of BD+43 3654 relative to the other stars of the nearby, massive stellar association Cygnus OB2 suggest it is a runaway star, making it one of the most massive runaway stars known in the Milky Way (along with the O-type supergiants Lambda Cephei and Zeta Puppis). Initially it was suggested a supernova explosion of a former binary system companion star caused the high velocity of BD+43 3654. Later research shows that a supernova ejection would not produce such a high space velocity. Given that BD+43 3654 appears to be younger than most stars in Cygnus OB2, an alternative scenario has been proposed in which BD+43 3654 is a massive blue straggler born in an encounter between two former double stars in the core of Cygnus OB2.

The U-boats sank nine ships, including one escort, three of which were claimed by U-96. The first, the British 5,547-ton cargo ship Anglo-Peruvian, was mistaken for an auxiliary cruiser and attacked with two torpedoes at 23:27.
