Like the story of the newspaper-filled piecrust, Food Still Lifes reminds us of the emptiness of so much of what we eat, our increasing distance from what we call food, and, perhaps most importantly, the artifice of tricking ourselves into desiring something that straddles the line between fiction and reality.

Since the late '70s, his art has taken a brain-scrambling multitude of forms: monotonous photographs of German apartments, luridly colorized mappings of Mars, retouched pornography scoured from the web, Man Ray-style "photograms" made with a supercomputer and copies of early-20th-century still lifes doctored to look like negatives.

A small neighborhood bistro near the Bourse, it has been run by women for three generations and retains its unpretentious 1930s décor of copper pots, amateur still lifes, hydrangeas stuffed into ceramic jugs and, on the zinc bar, a mascot in the form of an owl-shaped metal ice bucket.

Even the toniest of his advertising still lifes always benefited from a bit of dirt, ash, salt or tobacco crumbs, and in the '70s he took that idea to the limit in his extensive studies of cigarette butts, gigantically enlarged, at once nobly pillar-like, irredeemably filthy and weirdly infused with personality.

There are vivid biomorphic paintings by Arthur Dove, political works on paper by Shahn, rounded wooden figures by Elie Nadelman, flat still lifes by Charles Sheeler, some subtly erotic flora from Georgia O'Keeffe, and quite a few weathervanes, for which Halpert had a regrettable weakness (a rare lapse in her otherwise prescient good taste).

There's also contemporary art related to death, like unsettling photographs by Joel-Peter Witkin where bits of corpses are incorporated into beautiful still lifes, and a phantasmagoric 1870 painting by David Scott Evans of a shrouded woman floating in the night, roses flying around her, the seemingly deceased figure caught between the light of heaven, and a skeletal king in hell below.
