That was followed by victory in the Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree Racecourse in April before he went to Punchestown, where he finished second to Rhinestone Cowboy in the Punchestown Stayers Hurdle.
In a country where stayers are more esteemed than sprinters, Mr Tiz is well considered a champion in his class. He is honoured with a race carrying his name at Ellerslie, the scene of his historic Railway treble. The Mr Tiz Trophy is a listed stakes race for three-year-old horses over 1200m. It is run on the third and final day of Auckland Cup Week, the most prestigious week of racing on the New Zealand calendar.
Hors La Loi III was bred in France by François Cottin. His sire Cyborg, was a thoroughbred who specialised in producing jumpers. Hors La Loi's dam was the non-thoroughbred mare Quintessence (described in some sources as a Selle Français), who also produced his full-brother Cyborgo, winner of the 1996 Stayers' Hurdle. The post-nominal "III" was added to distinguish him from a successful, but less notable thoroughbred racehorse, who had already been registered as "Hors La Loi".
Limestone Lad returned to hurdling in the 2001/02 National Hunt season and won six races including a second Morgiana Hurdle, a second Hatton's Grace Hurdle, a third Bank of Ireland Hurdle and the Champion Stayers' Hurdle. In his final season he won another five races including the Lismullen Hurdle, a second Christmas Hurdle, a third Morgiana Hurdle and a third Hatton's Grace Hurdle. At the end of his racing career he was described as "Ireland's most famous racehorse".
Plans to contest the Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham had to be abandoned after the gelding injured muscles in his back in a paddock accident later that month. Michael Bowen said "I'm devastated that we might not make it. I'm sorry for all the people in the locality who have booked trips to the Festival". On 7 April, Limestone Lad returned in a two-mile flat race at the Curragh and finished third behind Ned Kelly and Beef or Salmon.
Although he never won a Group 1 race (he was placed), he won 13 European Pattern races, equalling the record of Ardross, Acatenango and Brigadier Gerard. At the age of 10, he was just denied the Stayers Triple Crown of Goodwood Cup, Ascot Gold Cup, and Doncaster Cup when Mr Dinos beat him into 2nd place at Ascot. He won three Jockey Club Cups, a Doncaster Cup, two Goodwood Cups, three Henry II Stakes, and two Lonsdale Cups.
He established the Ruckley Stud farm at his home, Ruckley Grange, in Shifnal, Staffordshire. There he bred Invershin and Inkerman, both bay colts by the sire Invincible and both high class stayers. Invershin won back-to-back Gold Cups at Ascot in 1928 and 1929, and other good races including successive victories in the Caledonian Hunt and a Derby Cup. Inkerman's two most notable wins were in the 1923 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket and the 1924 Chester Vase.
On her first appearance of the 2019/2020 National Hunt season Apple's Jade attempted to win the Lismullen Hurdle again but after taking an early lead she was overtaken at the penultimate obstacle and beaten into second place by the Tattersalls Ireland Champion Novice Hurdle winner Bacardys. On her next appearance she made a bid to win the Hatton's Grace Hurdle for a record- breaking fourth time but despite briefly taking the lead at the third last she was soon overtaken and came home third behind Honeysuckle and Bacardys, beaten thirteen lengths by the winner. The Christmas Hurdle (renamed the Frank Ward Memorial Hurdle) at Leopardstown on 28 December saw the mare start 6/4 joint favourite with Bacardys in a seven-runner field which also included Penhill (Stayers' Hurdle), Unowhatimeanharry (Champion Stayers Hurdle) and Killultagh Vic (Irish Daily Mirror Novice Hurdle). Apple's Jade went to the front at the first hurdle and was never in any danger of defeat, steadily increasing her advantage and winning "easily" by seventeen lengths from Unowhatimeanharry.
The Polynesian Panthers protested the controversial "dawn raids", which were introduced in 1973. The raids involved police storming the homes of people who had overstayed temporary working visas, typically at dawn. Though the majority of people overstaying such visas were from the UK, Australia and South Africa, the dawn raids disproportionately targeted over-stayers of Pacific Islander heritage. In protest, Polynesian Panther members would organise "raids" on the homes of prominent politicians in favour of the policy, surrounding them and chanting with megaphones.
In the Goodwood Cup the following month, Le Moss and Ardross dominated the race, with the former prevailing by a neck after a prolonged struggle. The third and final meeting of the two stayers came in the Doncaster Cup in September. The result was the same, with Le Moss holding off the challenge of Ardross to win by a neck. In October, Ardross was matched against the Jockey Club Stakes winner More Light in the Jockey Club Cup at Newmarket Racecourse.
Sea Pigeon (1970-2000) was an American-bred, British-trained racehorse who excelled in both National Hunt and flat racing. In a racing career which lasted from 1972 until 1981 he competed in eighty-five races, and won thirty- seven times. He was best known for his performances in hurdle races when he won the Champion Hurdle on two occasions. He was also one of the best flat stayers of his era winning major handicap races under weights of up to 140 pounds.
The suburb's proximity to the University of Cape Town (UCT) and its Medical School in particular, has always made it popular with students and lecturers. Observatory has long had a vibrant entertainment scene, as a result of its high proportion of students. There are numerous restaurants and bars, with a high turnover, but some long term stayers. Most restaurants and retail shops are located along Lower Main road with a 95-year-old bottle store Observatory Liquors situated in the middle.
He then finished fourth of six runners 18½ lengths behind Hurricane Fly in the Irish Champion Hurdle in January 2015. The next month he was entered in a Grade 2 hurdle race at Gowran Park and came third of five runners, beaten 18 lengths by Kitten Rock. After these disappointing results, Tiger Roll started at odds of 50/1 in the Stayers' Hurdle over 3 miles at Cheltenham in March. It was the first time he had run over a distance of more than about 2 miles.
Le Moss (3 April 1975 - 17 August 2000) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. A specialist stayer, he excelled at distances of two miles and beyond, winning eleven times from fifteen races between 1977 and 1980. He showed good form as a three-year-old, winning the Queen's Vase and finishing second in the classic St Leger Stakes, but reached his peak as an older horse. In 1979 he completed the "Stayers' Triple Crown" by winning the Ascot Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup and Doncaster Cup.
He tracked the favourite from the start but looked well beaten when he fell at the last. On 16 March Nichols Canyon was stepped up in distance to contest the Stayers' Hurdle over three miles at the Cheltenham Festival in which he was partnered by Walsh and started at odds of 10/1 in a twelve-runner field. Unowhatimeanharry started odd-on favourite after winning eight consecutive races including the Spa Novices' Hurdle and the Long Walk Hurdle. The other runners included Cole Harden.
As the offspring of two slow-maturing stayers, Spion Kop was not expected to excel as a two- year-old in 1919. He failed to win in six starts, but showed some consistency by reaching the frame in all his races, finishing second five times and third once. At the end of the year, in the Free Handicap, a rating list of the leading juveniles, Spion Kop was given a weight of 102 pounds, suggesting that he was at least twenty pounds below top class.
Septimus made steady progress, overtook Finalmente approaching the last quarter mile and accelerated away from his rivals to win "easily" by five lengths. After the race Murtagh commented "He's a very progressive horse and has really improved. He showed he has no problem with the trip... he has a bit of speed, and is a class above those stayers at the moment". In the 2007 World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings Septimus was rated the 17th best racehorse in the world and the best horse over extended distances.
Spion Kop was a good sire of stayers, with his progeny including Kopi (Irish Derby), Bongrace (Doncaster Cup) and The Bastard (Yorkshire Cup, Leading sire in Australia). Felstead was inbred 3x4 to the New Zealand bred Carbine (see below), to whom he was said to bear a striking resemblance. Felstead was sent into training with the Australian Oswald "Ossie" Bell at his Delamere House Stables in Lambourn. Bell's involvement and Carbine's southern hemisphere origins led the Sydney Sun to describe Felstead's Epsom victory as "Australia's Derby".
Reliance was based in England for his stud career, standing at the Harwood Stud in Newbury, Berkshire. He had his greatest success as a sire of stayers, with his progeny including Proverb (Chester Vase, Goodwood Cup, Doncaster Cup), Recupere (Prix du Cadran) and Tug of War (Goodwood Cup). He was also the sire of the broodmare Doubly Sure, the dam of Kris and Diesis. Other daughters produced the champion sprinter Moorestyle, the Ascot Gold Cup winner Longboat and the St. James's Palace Stakes winner Persian Heights.
At the end of his three- year-old season, Assert was syndicated with an estimated value of $25,000,000 and sent to North America to become a breeding stallion at the Windfield Farm in Maryland. He sired many good winners including Dancehall (Grand Prix de Paris), Lecroix (Union-Rennen), Tzar Rodney (Prix La Force), Timely Assertion (Santa Anita Oaks), Square Cut (San Luis Obispo Handicap), All My Dreams (Deutsches Derby), Betty Lobelia (Miss Grillo Stakes), Nomadic Way (Stayers' Hurdle, Cesarewitch Handicap, Irish Champion Hurdle), Running Flame (Hollywood Turf Cup).
The Selangor Turf Club hosts about 30 race days a year, which a racing season that begins from January to December. The main feature would be the Triple Crown Series, which carries a grand purse of RM2.7 million. Popularly known as “Where Sprinters Meet Stayers”, the Triple Crown Series is made up of three races featuring different distances like the Tunku Gold Cup race, which is set over a distance of 1,200 metres. The Selangor Gold Cup and the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor races are run over distances of 1,600 metres and 2,000 metres.
Khalkevi is a bay horse with a white star bred in Ireland by his owner, Aga Khan IV. She was sent into training with Alain de Royer-Dupré in France and was ridden in all of his races by Christophe Soumillon. He was sired by Kahyasi, who won the Epsom Derby in 1988 before becoming a good sire of stayers, jumpers and broodmares. Khalkevi's dam Khalisa was a successful racehorse won both the Prix Cléopâtre and Prix Chloé for the Aga Khan in 1996. Her grand-dam Khayra was a half-sister to Kalamoun.
In similar events over the same course and distance he ran second on 14 June and then won again on 4 July. He was beaten on his three subsequent starts but showed good form when finishing second in the stayers' race at the Shergar Cup. As a five-year-old Sergeant Cecil continued to show solid, but unremarkable form in handicaps. He was placed in competitive events at Goodwood, Doncaster Racecourse and Haydock Park but his only success came over one and a half miles at Ascot Racecourse on 9 July.
Pappa Fourway was a powerfully built bay horse standing 16 hands high bred in County Tipperary, Ireland by the Ballykisteen Stud. He was sired by Pappageno, a stallion best known as a sire of stayers and National Hunt horses including the Scottish Grand National winner Pappageno's Cottage. His dam was a mare named Oola Hills, who was the ancestor of Park Top, Lyric Fantasy and Royal Applause. As a yearling, Pappa Fourway was sent to the sales, where he was purchased for 150 guineas and entered into the ownership of Mrs Elaine Goldson.
Cooperation between pacer and stayer includes the use of terms and signals understood internationally, because pacers and stayers may be of different nationalities. The stayer needs to be close to the roller to gain maximum profit from the slipstream; if he gets too close he may hit the roller and fall, if he falls too far behind it, he loses the slipstream effect and will quickly fall further back. The pacer then has to slow down so he can catch up and then accelerate without again losing his rider.
The Goodwood Cup attracted a bigger field, including the Queen Alexandra Stakes winner Donegal Prince and the Cesarewitch Handicap winner Popsi's Joy. Ardross won by a length from Donegal Prince at odds of 2/9, becoming the shortest-priced winner of the race since 1935. Having dominated the stayers, Ardross was moved down in distance for the Geoffrey Freer Stakes over thirteen furlongs at Newbury Racecourse in August. Despite a slow early pace, he drew away in the straight to win by five lengths from Castle Keep and Cut Above.
His sire sons include Zabeel (who stood at Cambridge Stud at a fee of NZD$100,000),Cambridge Stud Stallions 2010 Marauding, Dr Grace and Grosvenor. Whilst he was known as a sire of stayers, Sir Tristram's progeny and further descendants have excelled over a wide range of distances. As well as siring winners of the Melbourne Cup (the world's richest handicap – over 3,200 metres), Sir Tristram sired Marauding, who won a Golden Slipper (the world's richest two-year-old race – over 1,200 metres), and several other outstanding two-year-olds.
The Gold Cup, established in 1924, was originally a supporting race for the County Hurdle. This was the main event of the first day but that quickly changed, and in the following seasons it became a championship race. For many years it was still used by the trainers as a preparation race for the Grand National. The Champion Hurdle first ran in 1927 and the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 1959; they were both championship races from the time they were introduced, unlike the Stayers' Hurdle and Gold Cup.
The Empire City Gold Cup was an American Thoroughbred horse race first run in 1947 and 1948 at Belmont Park then at Jamaica Race Course from 1949 through 1953 as a race created for horses age three and older. With its lucrative $100,000 purse, it was promoted as an international event in an effort to attract horses from Europe and South America. Run in October or early November it was contested on dirt at a distance of 1 5/8 miles which made it best suited for stayers.
Conolly eventually sent Euclid into the lead which he held until Charles the Twelfth made his challenge in the straight. As in the first race, the two colts raced together throughout the closing stages, but Bill Scott always appeared to have the upper hand and Charles the Twelfth won "rather cleverly" by a head. The time for the second heat was 3:45. Two days later Charles the Twelfth was matched against older horses, including the leading stayers Bee's-wing and Lanercost in the Doncaster Cup over two miles five furlongs.
Walsh then asked him for an effort and he quickened to take the lead two fences from the finish. He hit the final fence, but stayed on strongly to beat Exotic Dancer by 2½ lengths, with outsider Turpin Green another 2½ lengths back in third place. By winning the Betfair Chase, King George and Gold Cup, Kauto Star won the Stayers Chase Triple Crown £1 million bonus. He also won the National Hunt Order of Merit for the 2006/07 season and finished as the top-rated chaser.
The track opened as a synthetic 'En-Tout-Cas' on 6 May 1967 and was the first track of its type built in England. The complex formerly also included Leicester's cycle velodrome, however this side of the complex is subject to planning permission for a new housing estate. The velodrome hosted the British National Stayers Championships and the British National Track Championships for several decades before it fell into disrepair due to lack of funds. The venue hosted British and World track cycling and Road Racing championships in August 1970.
This line serves in races behind motorbikes as a separation line. Stayers below the blue line may not be overtaken on the inside. In Madison races (named after six-day races at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York and also known as "the American"), the team's relief rider rests above the stayer's line by riding slowly until his or her teammate comes around the track and throws him or her back into the race. The finish line is black on a wide white band and near the end of the home straight.
Returned to François Doumen's stable for the 1999/2000 season, Hors La Loi began with two disappointing efforts at Auteuil, but once again showed improved form when raced in England. In February he won the Grade II Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton, an important trial for the Champion Hurdle. He had some problems in training, and his connections considered running him in the Stayers' Hurdle before opting for the Championship. At Cheltenham, he went off as at 11-1 and ran up to expectations, but was no match for Istabraq, finishing a four-length second.
Attempting to concede eight pounds to Medinas, he finished second, seven lengths behind his rival and eighteen lengths ahead of the 2014 Stayers Hurdle winner More Of That. On 1 January, the gelding contested the Dornan Engineering Hurdle over two and a half miles at Cheltenham. He led from the start but was overtaken approaching the last and finished third behind Rock On Ruby and Vaniteux. Later that month, Cole Harden started at odds of 9/2 for the Grade 1 Cleeve Hurdle over three miles at Cheltenham.
Princeful remained in training for three more seasons but made few appearances and never recovered his best form. In January 2000, Hitchins removed several of his horses from Pitman's (Mrs P had already retired at this point – needs correction) yard and sent them to be trained by Mandy Bowlby. In two races that year, Princeful finished sixth behind Teaatral in Grade 2 hurdle at Ascot in April and was pulled up in the Champion Stayers Hurdle at Punchestown in May. By 2002, he was being trained in Somerset by Ron Hodges.
A lacklustre performance saw him pulled up in the December Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown. He was beaten into second place in the Irish Champion Hurdle and there was a disappointing performance in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham before his final race of the 2017/2018 season saw a return to form with victory in the Champion Stayers Hurdle at Punchestown. The 2018/2019 season was Faugheen's first season on the racecourse without a win. He came second in the Morgiana Hurdle and experienced the first fall of his career in the Christmas Hurdle.
Karshi (foaled 7 April 1990) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse best known for his performances in National Hunt racing. He was a moderate performer on the flat, winning one minor event in eleven attempts, but showed improved form when tried over hurdles despite recurring injury problems. In his first season over obstacles he won two novice races and finished third in the Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle. In the following season he won the Lonesome Glory Hurdle and recorded his most important victory when winning the Stayers' Hurdle at odds of 20/1.
The Corn Cuchulainn for stayers was another major event introduced to the track in 1961 and in 1977 the track went ahead with considerable improvements that included a new stand, restaurant and other facilities. The 1978 running of the Callanan Cup and Oaks did not take place at the Cross with the latter switching to Shelbourne. Stability followed with established races taking centre stage except for the Oaks which would eventually be held at Shelbourne permanently. George Deegan became Racing Manager as the track raced on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights.
Told of a good horse for sale in Australia called Merman, she purchased it and had it shipped to England; such shipments were risky and she had a previous bad experience with a horse arriving injured (Maluma). Merman was regarded as one of the best stayers; he eventually went on to win the Lewes Handicap, the Cesarewitch, Jockey Club Cup, Goodwood Stakes, Goodwood Cup, and Ascot Gold Cup (with Tod Sloan up).The New York Times, June 15, 1900, p. 16 Langtry later had a second Cesarewitch winner with Yentoi, and a third place with Raytoi.
In early 1946, Caracalla took his winning run to six by taking the Prix Edgard Gillois and the Prix de Dangu. On his first and only appearance outside France, Caracalla was part of an exceptionally strong team of French stayers sent to Royal Ascot in June. Ridden by the French-based English jockey Charlie Elliott, he was made 4/9 favourite in a field of seven runners for the meeting's premier event, the Ascot Gold Cup over two and a half miles. He won by two lengths from Chanteur, with Basileus completing a clean sweep of the places for France by finishing third.
Ridden by Elliott he produced a "spectacular late sweep" to take the lead in the straight and pulled clear to win easily by four lengths from Bayeux and Roi de Navarre. His victory earned £11,375 for Marcel Boussac and highlighted the superiority of late-maturing French stayers over their British rivals. Following the race, Arbar was hailed as "the best stayer in Europe... if not the world". At Goodwood Racecourse on 29 July he started 1/3 favourite for the Goodwood Cup over two miles five furlongs in which he was matched against Federico Tesio's Italian champion Tenerani.
A wicket-keeper and useful batsman, he played for British Guiana from 1958–59 to 1961–62. On his first- class debut against Barbados he opened the batting and scored 74 and 27, and in his second match, also against Barbados, he made 5 and 69. He later batted down the order. He made his Test debut against India in the Second Test at Kingston in 1961–62, when batting at number eight he made 78, his highest first-class score, adding 127 for the seventh wicket with Gary Sobers and 74 for the eighth wicket with Charlie Stayers.
He won minor events at Kelso in November and January and was then stepped up in class for the Grade II West of Scotland Novices' Chase at Ayr. Starting the 11/8 favourite, he made several jumping errors but won by three lengths from the Stayers' Hurdle winner King's Curate. Eleven days later, Jodami raced in the South of England for the first time when he started odds on favourite for the Reynoldstown Novices' Chase at Ascot Racecourse. His unbeaten run of seven races came to an end as he jumped erratically and was beaten fifteen lengths by Danny Harrold.
Chanteur's only important win of 1946 came in May when he won the older horses' version of the Prix Jean Prat (the race now known as the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier) over 3,000 metres at Longchamp. In this race he defeated the outstanding six-year-old stayer Marsyas who had won the race for the last two years. He went on to finish second in the Prix des Sablons (Prix Ganay) over 2000 metres and third to Marsyas in the 4000 meter Prix du Cadran. In June 1946, Chanteur was part of an exceptionally strong team of French stayers sent to Royal Ascot.
Zainta was a bay mare bred in Ireland by her owner, Aga Khan IV. She was sent into training with Alain de Royer-Dupré in France and was ridden all of her races by Gerald Mosse. She was sired by Kahyasi, who won the Epsom Derby in 1988 before becoming a good sire of stayers, jumpers and broodmares. His other foals included Enzeli, Hasili, Khalkevi, Karasi and Vereva. Zainta's dam Zaila showed some racing ability, winning one race in France in 1991 and became a successful broodmare who also produced the Grande Course de Haies d'Auteuil winner Zaiyad.
Vereva was a brown mare with a small white star bred in Ireland by her owner, Aga Khan IV. She was sent into training with Alain de Royer- Dupré in France and was ridden in three of her four races by Gerald Mosse. She was sired by Kahyasi, who won the Epsom Derby in 1988 before becoming a good sire of stayers, jumpers and broodmares. His other foals included Enzeli, Hasili, Khalkevi, Karasi and Zainta. Vereva's dam Vearia showed fair form on the track, winning two minor races from seven starts, and became a very successful broodmare who also produced Valanour.
In the aftermath of his Guineas win, he was described as the "horse of the century". Tudor Minstrel started at odds of 4/7 at Epsom on a cold, wet day in front of an estimated 400,000 spectators including the King and Queen. Doubts about his stamina were countered by those who pointed out that his pedigree contained many good stayers, with one observer stating that Tudor Minstrel could win the race even if he were hitched to a cart. He failed to settle in the early stages and tired in the straight, finishing fourth behind Pearl Diver.
Motivator is a bay horse with a white star bred by Salah M. Fustok's Deerfield Farm in Dullingham, Cambridgeshire. He was purchased at the 2003 Tattersalls October Yearling sale for 75,000gns by the bloodstock agent John Warren on behalf of the Royal Ascot Racing Club, a partnership whose 230 members included television personality, Simon Cowell. Motivator is one on many top-class middle-distance horses and stayers sired by Montjeu. Others include the Derby winners Authorized and Pour Moi, the St Leger winners Scorpion and Masked Marvel and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Hurricane Run.
After the race Mullins said "He'll probably go to Punchestown and then possibly the French Champion Hurdle, then next year we might seriously consider the Stayers' Hurdle. The ability is there for a Gold Cup, but probably not the scope for it with his jumping. He's got a tremendous engine, but is a scrappy jumper". Rule Supreme returned to England again in April, unseating Casey when he made a bad jumping mistake in the Mildmay Novices' Chase at Aintree, and finishing fifth when carrying 164 pounds in the Betfred Gold Cup at Sandown Park on the last day of the season.
On 16 June, Royal Gait was sent to contest Britain's most prestigious stayers race, the Gold Cup over two and a half miles at Royal Ascot. Cash Asmussen took over the ride from Gibert, and the gelding started the 15/2 fourth choice in the betting behind Sadeem, Primitive Rising and Sergeyevich. He was not among the early leaders but moved up to fourth place on the turn into the straight. At this point, El Conquistador, who had been acting as a pacemaker for Sadeem, dropped back sharply and collided with Royal Gait who was moving up on the rail.
In early 2001, Limestone Lad returned to hurdles and won the Bank of Ireland Hurdle at Naas, before beating Boss Doyle by three and a half lengths to take the Boyne Hurdle for a second time in February. He was unable to contest the 2001 Cheltenham Festival as the meeting was abandoned owing to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. At Fairyhouse in spring he finished third to Bannow Bay in the Champion Stayers Hurdle. In his final steeplechase he finished second to Sackville in the Powers Gold Cup at the same course nine days later.
While success was seemingly assured, the jockey mistook the winning post and had to be rousted along to maintain his position at the finish. No such mistake was made on his next and final outing of the season at Wetherby where, despite conceding 33lb, Little Owl won by twenty lengths from Silversmith who himself had won four races that season. The Guardian 28 May 1979 p.13 (subscription required) While he did not race outside of handicap company, Little Owl's progression was such that he wound up being rated that season's leading staying hurdler by Timeform - ahead of Stayers' Hurdle winner, Lighter.
He continued to compete in handicaps, finishing second to Splendid Thyne at Warwick Racecourse on 17 January and fourth behind Buckhouse Boy in the Sandown Handicap Hurdle in February. On 19 March 1998, Princeful returned to the Cheltenham Festival and started a 16/1 outsider for the twenty-seventh running of the Stayers' Hurdle over three miles. Splendid Thyne and Buckhouse Boy were again in opposition, but the 6/4 favourite was Paddy's Return, whose wins included the Triumph Hurdle, World Series Hurdle and Long Walk Hurdle. The other contenders included Commanche Court and Ocean Hawk (1996 Long Walk Hurdle).
Cheltenham Racecourse at Prestbury Park, near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, hosts National Hunt horse racing. Its most prestigious meeting is the Cheltenham Festival, held in March, which features several Grade I races including the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase, Ryanair Chase and the Stayers' Hurdle. The racecourse has a scenic location in a natural amphitheatre, just below the escarpment of the Cotswold Hills at Cleeve Hill, with a capacity of 67,500 spectators. Cheltenham Racecourse railway station no longer connects to the national rail network, but is the southern terminus of the preserved Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.
At the Cheltenham Festival he was placed third in the Stayers' Hurdle and at Aintree was pulled up in the Aintree Hurdle. In October 2019 trainer Willie Mullins announced that the 11 year old would start a novice chasing campaign. Faugheen made his debut over fences with a win in a Beginners Chase at Punchestown in November 2019 and followed it up on 26 December at Limerick with victory in the Grade 1 Greenmount Park Novice Chase. Another win at the Dublin Racing Festival in February 2020 took Faugheen's record to 17 wins in 25 races, with eleven Grade One wins.
Bacchanal (4 March 1994 - 25 January 2003) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt racing. He was lightly- raced, winning ten of his twenty races between January 1999 and January 2003. As a novice hurdler he won two of his four races and in the following season he won the Gerry Feilden Hurdle before recording his biggest win in the Stayers' Hurdle. He later developed into a top class steeplechaser, winning the Feltham Novices' Chase, Reynoldstown Novices' Chase and Aon Chase and twice finishing third in the King George VI Chase.
On 16 March 2000, Bacchanal ran for the first time at the Cheltenham Festival where he contested the Stayers' Hurdle. He was made the 11/2 third choice in the betting behind Lady Rebecca and the Irish gelding Limestone Lad who had beaten Istabraq in the Hatton's Grace Hurdle. The other contenders included Behrajan (Tolworth Hurdle), Mister Morose (Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle, November Novices' Chase), Galant Moss (Liverpool Hurdle) and Silver Wedge (Tolworth Hurdle, Long Walk Hurdle, West Yorkshire Hurdle). Mick Fitzgerald positioned the gelding in second place behind Limestone Lad, with Silver Wedge also close to the lead.
In July, Sadeem started the 4/6 favourite for the Goodwood Cup and won by a length from the 20/1 outsider Spruce Baby, to whom he was conceding seven pounds. After again finishing fifth in the Prix Kergorlay, Sadeem attempted to complete the Stayers' Triple Crown in the Doncaster Cup on 8 September. He was matched against Kneller an undefeated three-year-old who had won the Ebor Handicap on his previous appearance. After a prolonged struggle over the last three furlongs, Sadeem was beaten three-quarters of a length by Kneller, to whom he was conceding sixteen pounds.
Gildoran turned the race into a procession, winning very easily by eight lengths from Ore who was in turn twelve lengths clear of Karadar in third. Gildoran then attempted to complete the Stayers' Triple Crown when he started the 1/2 favourite for the Doncaster Cup. Running on softer ground than he had encountered in the summer, Gildoran finished last of the four runners behind Petrizzo, who was controversially disqualified in favour of the runner-up Wagoner. On his final appearance of the season he ran very poorly when unplaced behind Old Country in the Jockey Club Cup at Newmarket.
The official BHA handicapper awarded Thistlecrack a rating of 174: this equaled the best mark achieved by Big Buck's and was two pounds higher than the peak ratings given to Inglis Drever and Baracouda. At Aintree on 9 April Thistlecrack started 2/7 favourite for the Liverpool Stayers' Hurdle against four opponents were headed by the Nicky Henderson-trained Different Gravey and the RSA Chase runner-up Shaneshill. He took the lead soon after the start and was never seriously challenged: he survived a mistake at the second last before pulling away to win easily by seven lengths from Shaneshill.
Smuggler did not contest the Gold Cup, his owner, Lord Porchester stating that the unfashionable status of stayers as breeding stallions meant that it would devalue the horse to even enter him in the race. Buckskin's pacemaker Palei set a strong pace until six furlongs from the finish when Shangamuzo moved into the lead with Buckskin close behind. The two engaged in a brief struggle before Shangamuzo established a decisive advantage on the turn into the straight. He was never seriously challenged in the closing stages and won by two lengths from Royal Hive, with Hawkberry a length and a half away in third.
Southern Europeans tend to demonstrate family-centric behaviours in the United States when academically researched. Studies suggest co-habitation with parents, and grandparents, endures longer for the grouping than other ethnic groups in the US. Studies have revealed a similar pattern with the group in Canada. Young Southern Europeans living in Vancouver were shown, in a 2003 study in Canadian Studies in Population, to leave home at one the latest stages, remaining home-stayers longer than Chinese Canadians, Indian Canadians or British Canadians. In Canada, residential behavioural patterns of the group were shown to be most typically represented by Portuguese Canadians, from a 2004 Housing Studies journal piece.
The independent Timeform organisation did not publish an annual for 1946, and so The Bug did not receive a rating in his best season. In 1947 he was rated on 135, the third highest of the year behind Tudor Minstrel (144) and the two-year-old My Babu (136), and equal to the French-trained stayers Souverain and Chanteur. In their book A Century of Champions, based on a modified version of the Timeform system, John Randall and Tony Morris rated The Bug the best British or Irish-trained horse of his generation and the tenth-best British or Irish-trained sprinter of the 20th century.
Delta Blues was virtually unknown until he had his victory in the 2004 Kikuka Sho.Delta Blues (JPN) - The Japan Association for International Horse Racing profile of Delta Blues He defeated Heart's Cry and Cosmo Bulk then. Delta Blues placed third in the Japan Cup in November 2004. Other runs by Delta Blues include wins in the Domestic Grade One Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) in October 2004, the Domestic Grade Two Stayers Stakes in December 2005, a third in the Grade Two Hanshin Daishoten on 19 March 2006 fifth in the Arima Kinen, and 10th in the Domestic Grade One Tenno Sho (Spring) on 30 April 30.
He was held up in the early stages before Thierry Jarnet moved him up into a clear lead at the start of the straight. Moonax emerged his most serious challenger but the English colt lost his chance by veering suddenly to his left 200m from the finish. Nononito was driven out to win by a length from Moonax, with Always Earnest third and Double Trigger fifth. On his final start of the year he was well beaten behind Red Roses Story in the Prix Royal Oak, a race in which the genuine stayers were unsuited by the slow early pace which turned the finish of the race into sprint.
Little Wolf was a "strong, close-coupled, quite attractive" chestnut horse with a broad white blaze and a white sock on his left hind leg bred by his owner Lord Porchester. Porchester, later the 7th Earl of Carnarvon, owned the Highclere Stud and served as racing manager to Queen Elizabeth II from 1969. Little Wolf was from the second crop of foals sired by Grundy, an outstanding racehorse who won The Derby and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1975. Grundy sired several other good winners, but his stock tended to be slow- maturing stayers and he was sold and exported to Japan in 1983.
Le Moss began his four-year-old season by beating two opponents in the Lymm Stakes over two miles at Haydock Park in May. He was then sent to Royal Ascot in June, where he was ridden by Lester Piggott in the Ascot Gold Cup over two and a half miles. He started at odds of 7/4 and won by seven lengths from his six-year-old stable companion Buckskin who started favourite. With Mercer back in the saddle, he then won the Goodwood Cup over two miles five furlongs and completed the Stayers' Triple Crown by winning the Doncaster Cup over two and a quarter miles in September.
Mejiro McQueen (Japanese : メジロマックイーン, April 3, 1987 - April 3, 2006) was a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was a late-maturing horse who did not emerge as a top-class performer until the autumn of his three-year-old season when he won the Kikuka Sho. Over the next three years he proved himself one of the best stayers in Japan with wins in the Tenno Sho (twice), Takarazuka Kinen, Osaka Hai, Kyōto Daishōten (twice) and Hanshin Daishoten (twice). He won the JRA Award for Best Older Male Horse in 1991 and was inducted into the Japan Racing Association Hall of Fame shortly after his retirement from racing.
Fernand Charron at the 1914 French Grand Prix standing next to the Alda built by Charron, Girardot et Voigt Fernand Charron (30 May 1866, in Angers – 13 August 1928, in Maisons-Laffitte) was a French pioneer of motor racing and automobile manufacturing. He started his sporting career as a successful cyclist. In 1891 he won the French National Stayers Championships riding a bicycle around a track following a tandem. Between 1897 and 1903 he took part in 18 car races, 4 of which he won: Marseille–Nice and Paris–Amsterdam–Paris in 1898, Paris–Bordeaux in 1899, and the inaugural Gordon Bennett Cup (Paris–Lyon) in 1900.
Bireme was a chestnut mare with a white blaze bred by her owner Richard Dunbavin "Dick" Hollingsworth at his Arches Hall Stud in Hertfordshire. She was one of the first crop of foals sired by Grundy, an outstanding racehorse who won The Derby and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1975. Grundy went on to sire several other good winners, but his stock tended to be slow-maturing stayers and he was sold and exported to Japan in 1983. Bireme's dam Ripeck was a highly successful broodmare whose other offspring included the Queen Alexandra Stakes winner Balinger and the Coronation Cup winner Buoy.
He trained for King George VI and then Queen Elizabeth II from 1943 until he retired in 1968, the same year in which he was knighted. His biggest royal wins were Pall Mall in the 1958 2,000 Guineas, Hypericum in the 1956 1,000 Guineas, Aureole in the 1954 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Canisbay in the 1965 Eclipse Stakes. He trained at Newmarket's Freemason Lodge stables from 1923 to 1968. Brown Betty's 1933 Epsom Oaks win was his first classic, but his particular flair was for training stayers: Boswell's 1936 St. Leger triumph was the first of six final classic wins (from 13 entries).
The New Zealand St. Leger is a major thoroughbred horse race run at Trentham Racecourse in New Zealand on New Zealand Oaks day in March each year. Run over 2500m up until 2018 and 2600m from 2019 onward, it is a test of a horse's staying ability. Originally open just to three-year-old horses, the race is now open to both three- and four-year-olds. Although it has suffered a loss in prestige in recent years, it is still a good race for up and coming stayers, with the likes of Kerry O'Reilly and Ring Of Fire taking part in recent runnings.
Chief Contender (foaled 30 March 1993) was an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who recorded his best wins in France. He showed good form as a three-year-old when he won three races including the Listed Grand Prix de la Region des Pays de La Loire and was placed in the Gordon Stakes, Prix Kergorlay and Prix de Lutèce. In the following year he ran third in the Prix Kergorlay and the Prix Gladiateur before recording his biggest win when he defeated a very strong field of stayers to take the Prix du Cadran. He was then sold and exported to Australia where he had no success.
Pratt and Company, including a new stand (the fourth one), miles of drain to prevent unsuitable racing ground, tar paving in the enclosures and the paddock extended to 35 saddling boxes, proved enough to make the National Hunt Committee decide on that the 1911 meeting was to return at Prestbury Park, Cheltenham where it remained to the present day. The earliest traceable reference to a "Festival" is in the Warwick Advertiser of 1907.Stevens, Peter, History of the National Hunt Chase 1860–2010. The Stayers' Hurdle, which first ran in 1912, is the oldest race from the Cheltenham festival that is currently a championship race.
It was off the bowling of Hall and Stayers that he played one of the finest innings of his career. He returned to form against Pakistan at home in 1952–53, and scored 560 runs in West Indies in early 1953 with two hundreds and four fifties. Umrigar's 560 runs in the 1952–53 series equalled Rusi Modi's identical tally against West Indies at home in 1948–49. This stood as an Indian record till Vijay Manjrekar scored 586 runs against England in 1961–62, and the highest abroad till Dilip Sardesai and Sunil Gavaskar made 642 and 774 runs in West Indies in 1970–71.
The gelding ended his season with a run in the British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot Racecourse on 19 October in which he started a 20/1 outsider. The field was headed by the Ascot Gold Cup winner Estimate and included several other top stayers including Saddler's Rock (Goodwood Cup, Doncaster Cup), Harris Tweed (John Porter Stakes) Ahzeemah (Lonsdale Cup) and Times Up (Doncaster Cup). In a tactical change, Murtagh restrained the horse in seventh place before making a forward move in the straight. He stayed on strongly in the closing stages, caught the leader Harris Tweed on the line and won by a nose.
Princeful began to compete against more experienced hurdlers in the 1997/1998 National Hunt season, beginning his campaign when finishing second under top weight of 164 pounds in a two-mile handicap at Ascot Racecourse in November. Two weeks later he finished fourth of twenty-one starters behind Major Jamie in the valuable William Hill Handicap Hurdle at Sandown Park Racecourse, again over two miles. On New Year's Day 1998, the gelding was moved up in distance for a handicap over two miles, five and a half furlongs at Cheltenham. Carrying 140 pounds, he won by eight lengths from Moorish, Karshi (winner of the 1997 Stayers' Hurdle) and Go Ballistic.
Nomadic Way (3 March 1985 - May 2012) was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was a successful stayer on the flat and was a top class hurdler under National Hunt rules, switching between the two codes in a racing career which lasted from October 1987 until January 1993. Racing on the flat, he won the Cesarewitch Handicap, finished second in the Chester Cup and the Queen Alexandra Stakes and took fourth place in the Ascot Gold Cup. When campaigned over hurdles he won the Irish Champion Hurdle in 1990 and the Stayers' Hurdle in 1992 and twice finished second in the Champion Hurdle.
The filly was then stepped up in distance and matched against older horses in the Ascot Gold Cup over two and a half miles but after being badly hampered by Papyrus she finished unplaced behind the French four- year-old Massine. In autumn Plack returned to winning form when she took the Newmarket Oaks over fourteen furlongs. She faced older stayers for the second time on 30 October when she contested the two and a quarter mile Jockey Club Cup at Newmarket. Ridden by Charlie Smirke she started odds-on favourite and won by one and a half lengths from the Prince of Wales's Stakes winner Eastern Monarch.
The quality of mares sent to Alderbrook was varied and not generally of high quality, but he did sire some jumps horses of note. These include Ollie Magern (winner of the Grade 1 Feltham Novices' Chase and dual winner of the Grade 2 Charlie Hall Chase), Baron Windrush (winner of the Grade 3 Classic Chase) and Sh Boom (winner of the Grade 2 Stayers Hurdle at Haydock). Alderbrook died at the age of 18 on 31 October 2007 after undergoing an operation on a leg infection. He spent the last years of his life as a breeding stallion in Anngrove Stud Farm, Mountmellick, County Laois.
During his next three starts he finished only second in average company but when stepped up to handicap level he claimed what later proved his greatest scalp so far, subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Call. Not having contested any Graded race, Dorans Pride lined up for the 1994 Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle as an unfancied 14-1 shot but was disputing second with the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Corrouge when falling at the final hurdle. He won the Stayers' Hurdle the following year. Having resented his retirement, he returned as a 14-year-old to run in the Foxhunter Chase at the 2003 Cheltenham Festival but was killed when falling at the second fence.
The theft was never solved, but a replacement was finished by August. Mark Twain, the American humorist, came to London about that time, and was much amused by the twin headlines appearing in The Times: MARK TWAIN ARRIVES ASCOT GOLD CUP STOLEN The Gold Cup is the first leg of Britain's Stayers' Triple Crown, followed by the Goodwood Cup and the Doncaster Cup. The last horse to win all three races in the same year was Double Trigger in 1995. The Gold Cup is one of three perpetual trophies at the Royal Ascot meeting, along with the Royal Hunt Cup and the Queen's Vase, which can be kept permanently by the winning owners.
In 1975, the independent Timeform organisation did not give a rating to Shangamuzo but awarded him a "p", indicating that the colt was likely to make more than normal progress, and commented that he was certain to stay one and a half miles. In the following year, Shangamuzo was given a weight of 117 pounds in the official British Free Handicap, twenty-three pounds below the top-rated Vitiges. He was given a rating of 108 by Timeform, twenty-one pounds behind their best stayer Sagaro, and was described in their annual Racehorses of 1976 as "very genuine and consistent". In 1977, Shangamuzo's Timeform rating improved to 121, twelve pounds behind the best stayers Sagaro and Dunfermline.
A professional motor paced championship was run in 1982 over one hour. The event is still often referred to as the motor paced or stayer championships, but this is a misnomer, because a motor paced or stayers race is one where the pacing machine is a modified motorbike of anything from 100cc to 2000cc engine size which has a roller mounted behind the back wheel. The cyclist or follower uses a bicycle which has a small front wheel and trailing front forks, which if it hits the roller merely spins the roller without causing any damage. Motor pacing lost popularity in the late 1990s due to its esoteric nature and Derny racing was introduced.
Back In Front was a brown gelding with a small white star bred in County Limerick Ireland by Noreen Hayes. He was sired by Bob Back, a racehorse whose best performance came when he recorded an upset win over Pebbles and Commanche Run in the 1985 Prince of Wales's Stakes. As a breeding stallion, he sired the St Leger Stakes winner Bob's Return, but had more success as a National Hunt sire, with his progeny including Bobs Worth, Bacchanal (Stayers' Hurdle), Thisthatandtother (Festival Trophy) and Burton Port (Reynoldstown Novices' Chase). Back In Front's dam Storm Front showed some ability as a National Hunt racehorse, winning six minor races and being placed at Grade III level.
St Nicholas Abbey, a bay horse with a white star and stripe and two white feet, was bred in Ireland by Barton Bloodstock & the Villiers Syndicate, a group associated with the Coolmore Stud. He is one of many top-class middle-distance horses and stayers sired by Montjeu. Others include the Derby winners Pour Moi, Authorized, Camelot and Motivator, the St Leger winners Scorpion and Masked Marvel and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Hurricane Run. St Nicholas Abbey's dam, Leaping Water was an unraced daughter of the Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Flamenco Wave and a half-sister of the Group One winners Ballingarry (Canadian International Stakes), Aristotle (Racing Post Trophy) and Starborough (St James's Palace Stakes).
In the three mile Boyne Hurdle at Navan on 20 February he led from the start and won easily by twenty lengths from Sallie's Girl, conceding fourteen pounds to the runner-up. In March 2000, Limestone Lad was sent to England for the first time to contest the Stayers' Hurdle over three miles at the Cheltenham Festival and started the 3/1 second favourite behind the mare Lady Rebecca. He did not make the running as he had done in most of his previous races, but overtook the leader Bacchanal to gain the advantage approaching the last. He jumped poorly however and lost the lead to Bacchanal on the run-in, finishing second by a length.
With a record of 3-0-1 in 8 starts, he was sold to Mr. & Mrs. Pang Yuen Hing to race in Hong Kong where he was renamed Indigenous and became widely regarded as one of Hong Kong's best stayers. The winner of a number of important races in Hong Kong, including back-to-back editions of the Hong Kong Champions & Chater Cup, Indigenous also finished a strong second in the 1999 Japan Cup and third in the 2002 Singapore Airlines International Cup. A gelding, after his retirement from racing on June 3, 2003 Indigenous was used at the Tuen Mun Public Riding School in Tuen Mun, New Territories where he died on August 8, 2004 following an illness.
Bacchanal overtook Limestone Lad after the second last, survived a poor jump at the final flight, and despite hanging abruptly to the right on the run-in, stayed on to win by a length, with a gap of three lengths back to Behrajan in third. After the race, Henderson praised the efforts of Yogi Breisner in helping the horse's jumping and said "I find this quite amazing as I always thought he wanted a bog, but he's always been a horse with huge potential and I'm thrilled with him". For the second year in succession, Bacchanal ran poorly at Punchestown in April, finishing fourth behind Rubhahunish when favourite for the Champion Stayers Hurdle.
After a break of almost a year, Anzum returned in a handicap hurdle over two and three quarter miles at Haydock Park on 26 November 1996. Carrying 160 pounds he was prominent from the start and stayed on well in the closing stages to take the lead in the final strides and won by a head from Burnt Imp with Dally Boy a head away in third. In February he carried top weight of 164 pounds in a two and half mile handicap at Chepstow and finished third behind Brave Tornado and Moorish. Two years after his defeat in the Triumph Hurdle, Anzum returned to the Cheltenham Festival to contest the Stayers' Hurdle over three miles.
After a nine-month absence, Karshi returned for a handicap hurdle at Doncaster Racecourse on 13 December in which he carried top weight of 168 pounds and finished third behind New Inn and Star Rage. Jim Culloty took over the ride on Karshi when he again carried 168 pounds and finished third to the Jenny Pitman-trained Princeful who was carrying twenty-eight pounds less. Princeful won the Stayers' Hurdle at two and a half months later. Karshi started 7/4 favourite for the Grade 1 Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham on 31 January but after leading for most of the way he tired in the closing stages and finished last of the five runners behind the mare Mistinguett.
In the 2013/14 National Hunt season Djakadam was campaigned in novice steeplechasing. He made a successful debut over the larger obstacles in a minor at Leopardstown Racecourse on 28 December and was then moved up in class for the Grade 2 Killiney Novice Chase over two miles five furlongs at the same track on 25 January. Ridden by Townend he started the 6/4 favourite against Bright New Dream (winner of the Michael Purcell Memorial Novice Hurdle), Mullaghanoe River and Road to Riches (Cork Stayers Novice Hurdle). He disputed the lead with Bright New Dream before taking a decisive advantage at the last fence and drew away up the run-in to win by four lengths.
In 1929 Mick the Miller won the Spring Cup competition here over 525 yards and then finished runner up in the Stayers Cup over 600 yards. The Irish Coursing Club issued a new list of classic races in 1932 and controversy followed because Harolds Cross was given the Oaks and not the Derby. Shelbourne had been given the premier event which did not go down well based on the fact that they had introduced the event. One year later and Harolds Cross were furious that Shelbourne were issued the race again. In a meeting Mr Tynan representing the track, had pointed out that the previous year Paddy O’Donoghue had promised that they could hold the event in 1933.
Despite the very difficult conditions ("mud and water flying in all directions"), and conceding at least thirty pounds to his opponents, he won impressively by eight lengths. John Porter, Isonomy's trainer In September he attempted to become the first horse to complete the stayers' Triple Crown in the Doncaster Cup, although there was some disappointment that the undefeated Hungarian mare Kincsem was ruled out of the race by injury. In a rough race he defeated the filly Jannette, despite being badly cut by the spurs of the runner-up's jockey, Fred Archer when he moved up to challenge for the lead along the rails. The Duke of Portland said of Isonomy's performance marked him as "one of the best and gamest horses that ever ran".
In May of that year he raced outside France for the first time when he won the White Rose Stakes at Hurst Park and was part of an exceptionally strong team of French stayers sent to Royal Ascot in June. When racing in Britain he was known as Marysas II. He bypassed the Ascot Gold Cup, in which his younger brother Caracalla defeated Chanteur, but won the longest race of the meeting, the Queen Alexandra Stakes over two and three- quarter miles. On subsequent visits to England that year he won the Goodwood Cup and the Doncaster Cup. In October at Newmarket he moved down in distance and won the Lowther Stakes over one and a half miles beating the King's colt Rising Light.
Although Indos were legally European and could be found in all layers of society, with the continued arrival of white (totok) Dutch settlers and expatriates, their social status in colonial times increasingly depended on their efforts to blend into the white upper class. Within the legal class of Europeans therefore there was clear social and racial distinction between the ‘Totok’ (full blooded) and ‘Indo’ (mixed race) European or in other words the expatriate and native European. The other 2 common Dutch terms to make a social distinction are: 1) trekkers (English: sojourners) and 2) blijvers (English: stayers). The first term refers to the typical white expatriate colonial, while the second refers to the white colonial settler, but includes native Indo-Europeans.
The two were left clear by the second last fence at which the favourite Don Cossack fell and an exciting battle began after the last with Cue Card catching Vautour with every stride. The pair finished in a photo finish and Cue Card was soon announced as the winner of the 65th King George VI Chase. His next race was after a three months break being sent straight for the Cheltenham Gold Cup in which he was bidding for the Stayers Chase Triple Crown £1 million bonus. He started the second favourite behind Don Cossack, in a field which also included the 2014 and 2015 Gold Cup runners-up Djakadam and On His Own and also the 2015 Hennessy Gold Cup winner, Smad Place.
Piggott sent Alleged into the lead from the start and set a steady pace with Crystal Palace, Crow and Orange Bay close behind. With no designated pacemakers and none of the recognised stayers making any attempt to challenge for the lead, the Irish colt was allowed to dictate the pace and on the downhill run towards the turn into the straight he led from Crystal Palace, Crow, Montcontour, Orange Bay and Yelpana. On the final turn, Alleged accelerated clear of the field and opened up a lead of four lengths. Although several horses made progress in the closing stages, Alleged was never seriously challenged and won by one and a half lengths from Balmerino, with Crystal Palace taking third, just ahead of Dunfermline and Crow.
The Devolve EP is the 1990 debut release by New Zealand rock band Shihad. The EP was originally released in 1990 on a limited run of 1000 vinyl records, and later rereleased as a limited run of CDs. Devolve received critical acclaim and while only being the band's first release, they were already one of the most talked about bands in New Zealand, at point of release they had already opened for such famous metal acts as Faith No More and Anthrax. Shihad's lineup at the time included young Hamish Laing, who only ever appears on this recording (later to be replaced with Karl Kippenberger), as well as Shihad - then Shihäd - main stayers Jon Toogood, Phil Knight and Tom Larkin.
Mashaallah was then placed in the Princess of Wales's Stakes and the Prix Maurice de Nieuil before disappointing when finishing last of the six runners in the Aral-Pokal at Gelsenkirchen. In September, however, Mashaallah produced the best form of his career. He returned to Germany for the Grosser Preis von Baden in which he led from the start to win by one and a quarter lengths from the German Horse of the Year Platini. He was then sent to Ireland for the Irish St. Leger at the Curragh, where he faced a field of top-class stayers including Vintage Crop (Melbourne Cup), Drum Taps (Ascot Gold Cup x2), Snurge (St Leger, Canadian International) and Rock Hopper (Hardwicke Stakes x2).
His first-class debut came in December 1959, against a touring English team, which was the inaugural first-class fixture played by the Windwards. Brisbane played another first-class match for the Windwards during the following season, and then appeared twice for the Combined Islands during the 1961–62 season.First-class matches played by Garnet Brisbane – CricketArchive. Retrieved 21 February 2016. Against British Guiana in October 1961, he took figures of 4/58, dismissing two West Indies internationals (Glendon Gibbs and Charlie Stayers).British Guiana v Combined Leeward and Windward Islands, Pentangular Tournament 1961/62 - CricketArchive. Retrieved 21 February 2016. After emigrating to Canada, Brisbane made his debut for the national team in September 1964, playing against the United States in the annual Auty Cup fixture.
Ridden by Carberry he made all the running, went clear at the second last and won by nine lengths from Boss Doyle, with Bannow Bay two and a half lengths back in third. In January he started 15/8 second favourite for the Irish Champion Hurdle but after leading for most of the way and rallying strongly on the run-in he was beaten a head by the mare Like-A-Butterfly. On 13 March 2003 Limestone Lad made his final racecourse appearance when he ran for the second time in the Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham. His preparation for the race had been disrupted after he had suffered from a respiratory infection which forced him to miss an intended run in the Boyne Hurdle.
Instead of challenging the top staying hurdlers, Little Owl was sent novice chasing and he made his seasonal debut in the Dipper Novices' Chase at Newcastle. Evening Times 10 January 1980 p.15 Despite conceding experience and race fitness to all of his opponents, he jumped immaculately and comfortably prevailed by a length and a half from Peterhof, a former Triumph Hurdle winner and twice placed in the Stayers' Hurdle in what would be that horses' last start. He was less convincing in his jumping a fortnight later in the West of Scotland Pattern Novices' Chase at Ayr where he beat Irish raider Romany Count by half a length although to his credit, he was giving away 10lb over a trip short of his optimum.
Princeful (foaled 11 April 1991) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who competed in National Hunt racing. After showing useful form in his early career, winning two National Hunt Flat races and a novice hurdle, he improved through the handicap ranks in the 1997/1998 National Hunt season before recording an upset win in the Stayers' Hurdle. He looked better than ever in the following year, winning the Long Distance Hurdle and the Long Walk Hurdle, but was brought down and badly injured in his first and only appearance in a steeplechase. He never recovered his best form thereafter and was retired from racing in 2002 with a record of seven wins and three places from eighteen races.
On his return in November, Princeful started 6/1 third favourite behind the West Yorkshire Hurdle winner Marello and the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained The Proms in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury. Ridden by Richard Dunwoody, he was under pressure two hurdles from the finish, but stayed on to overtake Shooting Light on the run-in and won by two and a half lengths. Dunwoody kept the ride when Princeful started 11/4 favourite for the Grade 1 Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot on 19 December. Paddy's Return, Ocean Hawk and Shooting Light were again in opposition as well as the 1996 Stayers' Hurdle winner Cyborgo and the Martin Pipe-trained Deano's Beeno who had won his last three races.
Cyborgo was off the course for a year before returning for the 1996 Stayers' Hurdle in which he was ridden for the first time by David Bridgwater. Halkopous, Hebridean, Simpson and Top Spin were among his opponents but none were seriously fancied in the nineteen-runner field. The Tipperkevin Hurdle winner Derrymoyle started 4/1 favourite ahead of Better Times Ahead (Premier Long Distance Hurdle), Seekin Cash and Treble Bob (Champion Novice Hurdle), with Cyborgo next in the betting on 8/1 alongside the Long Walk Hurdle winner Silver Wedge. Other fancied runners included the (Champion INH Flat Race) winner Tiananmen Square, the fourteen-year-old veteran Mole Board and the mare Mysilv, whose thirteen wins included the Triumph Hurdle and the Tote Gold Trophy.
After five successive defeats, Bollin Eric was stepped up in distance for the two mile Lonsdale Stakes at York in which he was matched against specialist stayers including Persian Punch and Jardine's Lookout. He recorded his first win for eleven months as he took the lead a furlong from the finish and won by two lengths from Cover Up. After the race a delighted Easterby revealed that he had been "dying to run" the colt over the distance. Darley also paid tribute to the horse's consistency and said that he had been in a "different class" from the opposition. In September, Bollin Eric raced outside the United Kingdom for the first time as he was sent to the Curragh for the Irish St. Leger.
He recorded his tenth consecutive win as he took the lead a furlong out and won easily by one and three quarter lengths from Cleonte. His success made him the seventh horse after Isonomy, Alycidon, Souepi, Le Moss, Longboat and Double Trigger to win the Stayers' Triple Crown. On 19 October Stradivarius attempted to win his eleventh consecutive race as he ran for the third time in the British Champions Long Distance Cup and went off the 8/13 favourite. The closing stages saw Stradivarius and the four-year-old Kew Gardens draw away from the field and although the favourite gained a narrow lead a furlong out, his younger rival rallied in the final strides to win by a nose.
O'Brien felt that the colt would have been unsuited by the good-to-firm ground at Doncaster and would be more at home on softer surface at the Curragh. Ridden by Joseph O'Brien he was the only three-year-old in the field but started the 5/4 favourite ahead of ten older stayers. His rivals included Forgotten Rules, Brown Panther, Agent Murphy (Geoffrey Freer Stakes), Second Step (Grosser Preis von Berlin), Sea Moon, Kingfisher, Wicklow Brave (County Hurdle), Gospel Choir (Yorkshire Cup) and Vent de Force (Henry II Stakes). After being restrained towards the rear of the field, the favourite moved into contention with half a mile left to run and went to the front soon after turning into the straight.
He started favourite at odds of 7/2 in a field which included such notable stayers as Kayf Tara, Celeric and Persian Punch, but finished fifth, lengths behind the winner Enzeli. A month after his defeat in the Gold Cup, Nedawi returned to Ascot for Britain's most prestigious all-aged race, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. While there was some speculation that he would be used as a pacemaker for his stable companion Daylami, the Godolphin team insisted that he would run on his own merits. Ridden by Gary Stevens, he took the lead just after half way in the mile and half contest and "shook off" the challenge of the 1999 Epsom Derby winner Oath before being headed by Daylami in the straight.
Research has suggested that, with the progression of globalization, Southern European Canadians may become more, not less, involved with their ancestral country of origin, despite sometimes being from families which are multi-generation Canadian-born. Published in 2003 in Canadian Studies in Population, a study revealed that Southern European young adults, living in the Vancouver area, left home at one of the latest stages of life, or remained home-stayers more often, compared with British, Chinese and Indian Canadians. Related research published in the Journal of Comparative Family Studies in 2004, had similar findings for South Europeans in Canada. Data from a 2004 Housing Studies journal article showed that, in statistics relating to housing, Portuguese Canadians are typical, or most representative, of Southern European Canadians in residential behavioural patterns.
He started the 8/13 favourite and took the lead at the second last but was aoutpaced in the closing stages and finished third behind Cab On Target and Winnie The Witch. On 10 March 1993, Nomadic Way appeared for the fourth time at the Cheltenham Festival when he was one of seventeen horses to contest the twenty-first running of the Stayers' Hurdle over three miles and a furlong. Ridden by Jamie Osborne, he started the 15/2 fourth choice in the betting behind the 1990 winner Trapper John, and the Sun Alliance Novices' Hurdle winners Crystal Spirit and Forest Sun. The other runners included Rustle (winner of the race in 1989), Ubu III (Grande Course de Haies d'Auteuil), Tyrone Bridge (Challow Novices' Hurdle) and Derring Valley (Sefton Novices' Hurdle).
Starting the 11/2 second choice in the betting he overcame interference in the straight to take the lead inside the final furlong and on by a neck from Count Octave. On 1 August at Goodwood Racecourse Stradivarius was stepped up to Group 1 class and matched against older stayers in the Goodwood Cup over two miles. Ridden by Atzeni he started the 6/1 second favourite behind Big Orange (winner of the race for the last two years) while the other runners included US Army Ranger, Wicklow Brave (Irish St Leger), Sheikhzayedroad (Northern Dancer Turf Stakes), Pallasator (Doncaster Cup), Qewy (Geelong Cup), Higher Power (Northumberland Plate), High Jinx (Prix du Cadran) and Sweet Selection (Cesarewitch). After racing in mid-division as Big Orange led, Stradivarius began to make progress three furlongs out.
Oliphant met Groves and Oppenheimer in Washington, D.C., on 18 September 1943, and they attempted to persuade him to join the Los Alamos Laboratory, but Oliphant felt that he would be of more use assisting Lawrence on the electromagnetic project. Accordingly, the Technical Subcommittee directed that Oliphant and six assistants would go to Berkeley, and later move on to Los Alamos. Oliphant found that he and Lawrence had quite different designs, and that the American one was frozen, but Lawrence, who had expressed a desire for Oliphant to join him on the electromagnetic project as early as 1942, was eager for Oliphant's assistance. Oliphant secured the services of a fellow Australian physicist, Harrie Massey, who had been working for the Admiralty on magnetic mines, along with James Stayers and Stanley Duke, who had worked with him on the cavity magnetron.
On his third appearance at the Cheltenham Festival, Anzum was ridden by Richard Johnson when he started a 40/1 outsider for the 28th running of the Stayers' Hurdle. The 2/1 joint-favourites were Deano's Beeno (winner of the premier Long Distance Hurdle) and Le Coudray a leading French hurdler who had recently been transferred to the Irish stable of Aidan O'Brien. Lady Rebecca, Paddy's Return and Ocean Hawk were also in the field as well as Juyush (Ascot Hurdle), Turnpole (Cesarewitch) and Kerawi (Christmas Hurdle). Racing on good to soft ground, Anzum was not among the early leaders, came under pressure from the seventh hurdle and was only eighth at the third last at which point Deano's Beeno, who had led up to that point, began to weaken and was overtaken by the Irish mare Sallies Girl.
As a four-year-old Give Notice continued to race in handicaps over extended distances and showed steady improvement. He finished second at Newmarket, fourth at Goodwood and fifth at York before running unplaced in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle Racecourse and then coming home third in the stayers' race at the Shergar Cup meeting. He recorded his first success of the year in a minor event over fifteen furlongs at Newmarket on 24 August when he carried 138 pounds and won by three quarters of a length after taking the lead three furlongs out. After running third to Alcazar at Newmarket he started a 33/1 outsider for the Cesarewitch over two and a quarter miles at the same track on 20 October and produced his best performance up to that time as he carried 126 pounds and finished a close third behind Distant Prospect and Palua.
Yasunari Iwata, who rode Rainbow Line in his last six races On 18 March 2018 Rainbow Line began his fourth campaign in the Hanshin Daishoten over 3000 metres. He started the 4.6/1 third choice in the betting behind Clincher (Kyoto Kinen) and Albert (Stayers Stakes) in an eleven-runner field which also included Satono Chronicle (Challenge Cup) and Curren Mirotic (Kinko Sho). After being restrained towards the rear as usual, Rainbow Line moved up on the outside on the final turn, hit the front approaching the last 200 metres and recorded his first win for more than two years as he came home a length and a quarter in front of Satono Chronicle with Clincher in third place. At Kyoto six weeks later Rainbow Line made his second attempt to win the spring edition of the Tenno Sho and was made the 5/1 second favourite behind Cheval Grand.
After finishing unplaced on his only race as a two-year-old, Le Moss was a "very impressive" winner of a maiden race at Newmarket Racecourse on his first appearance in 1978. He established himself as one of the leading stayers of his generation at Royal Ascot in June when he was ridden by Geoff Baxter to win the Queen's Vase over two miles at odds of 7/4. The following month, again ridden by Baxter, he defeated the mighty Sea Pigeon in the valuable Tennent Trophy over one mile and seven furlongs at Ayr. Re-united with stable jockey Mercer in August, he was an impressive winner of the March Stakes over one and three-quarter miles at Goodwood, a recognised trial for the St Leger Stakes at Doncaster in September where he finished second of the fourteen runners, one and a half lengths behind the 28/1 outsider Julio Mariner.
Few pedestrians in Shibuya Crossing during the state of emergency On 1 April, The government established Wednesday a team within the secretariat of the National Security Council tasked with crafting Japan's strategic response to the coronavirus crisis while improving its competitiveness in the technology and economic spheres. Specifically, the team is planned to focus on overcoming the novel coronavirus epidemic as well as driving Japan's development in the fields of artificial intelligence and 5G wireless, especially in the face of the United States' and China's race for supremacy in the technologies. The Immigration Services Agency of Japan said Friday it will extend for three months the deadline for foreigners to renew their period of stay in a bid to alleviate congestion at immigration counters amid the coronavirus outbreak. At present, immigration counters nationwide are crowded with foreigners, including short-term stayers, who are applying for extensions of their stay in Japan, with some of them unable to return home due to tighter border control across the globe.
Kauto Star (19 March 2000 – 29 June 2015) was a French-bred National Hunt champion racehorse trained by Paul Nicholls in Somerset and owned by Clive Smith. He won the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice, in 2007 and 2009, becoming the first horse to regain the cup after losing it in 2008 by seven lengths behind Denman. He tried for three more years to win the race again, but the best placing he could achieve was in 2011, coming third behind Long Run. He also won the King George VI Chase a record five times. He was one of the most successful steeplechasers of modern era finishing his racing career with a National Hunt record of £3,775,883 in earnings, which consisted of £2,375,883 in race prize money, £1,000,000 bonus for the completion of the 2006/2007 Stayers Chase Triple Crown and also a £400,000 reward for heading the BHA Table of Merit in the same 2006/2007 season.
Karshi's next race was a minor handicap hurdle over two miles five furlongs at Newbury Racecourse in February when he finished third to Copper Boy, conceding twenty-three pounds to the winner. On 13 March at the Cheltenham Festival Karshi started at odds of 20/1 for the 26th running of the Stayers' Hurdle in a field which included Escartefigue, What A Question (Long Distance Hurdle), Urubande, Trainglot (Cesarewitch Handicap), Ocean Hawk (Long Walk Hurdle), Pridwell, Derrymoyle (Tipperkevin Hurdle) and Anzum. Ridden by Osborne, he was among the leaders from the start before losing his position three hurdles from the finish as Escartefigue and Paddy's Return opened up a clear advantage over the other runners. Karshi rallied to move up between Paddy's Return and Escartefigue approaching the final hurdle, took the lead and was driven clear on the run-in to win by two and a half lengths from the fast finishing Anzum.
His opponents were the French horse Bog Frog (winner of the Prix Leon Rambaud and third in the Grande Course de Haies d'Auteuil), Top Spin (Winter Novices' Hurdle), Cabochon (Ascot Stakes) and Allegan (runner-up in the Yorkshire Cup). Cyborgo led from the start, went clear of his rivals approaching the penultimate flight of hurdles, and won by fifteen lengths from Top Spin, to whom he was conceding fourteen pounds. On 16 March 1995, Cyborgo made his first appearance at the Cheltenham Festival and started 3/1 second favourite behind the Irish six-year-old Dorans Pride for the 24th running of the three-mile Stayers' Hurdle, with the other contenders including Hebridean (Long Walk Hurdle), Bokaro (Corsa Siepi di Milano), Simpson (Premier Long Distance Hurdle) and Halkpous (Fighting Fifth Hurdle). Cyborgo led for most of the way before being overtaken two hurdles out and finished second of the eleven runners, three lengths behind Dorans Pride.
Despite winning his jockey championship with Henry Cecil, it was his relationship with the West Ilsley stable under Dick Hern for which he is most famous. Hern took over as trainer at West Ilsley at the end of 1962 on the retirement of Jack Colling, and there was no question he would remain in place on Hern's takeover. The stable was endowed with several top owner- breeders and was now owned by John Jacob Astor (then known as Jakie Astor, and later as Sir John Astor), who with his brother Lord Astor provided most of the horse firepower. During the early years of the Hern/Mercer partnership they had most success with a series of stayers, the best of which was probably Grey of Falloden who won several stakes races (the Doncaster Cup and Henry II Stakes) but also won the 1964 Cesarewitch Handicap with a then record weight of 9stone 6pounds. The following year the stable hit top form and won both the English St. Leger Stakes and Irish St. Leger Stakes with Provoke (owned by Jakie) and Craighouse (owned by Lord Astor: William Astor, 3rd Viscount Astor) respectively. In both 1964 and 1965 Mercer rode 108 winners in Britain.
