Ever since the tradition of electing the carnival queen among upper-class young women of the city to preside over the festivities have been maintained, which has made commonplace to see, read and hear how the crown has been only rotated among a few families: Gerlein, Donado, Vengoechea, Lafaurie o Abuchaibe. This tradition is mainly because a large part of the spendings, for instance those related to the attire worn by the queen during her crowning, are paid by the queen's family. This undoubtedly has been criticised since non-upper-class young women cannot aspire to hold the queen title due to the astronomically high sums of money that costs to be the carnival queen. Nevertheless, according to the official call statement, the candidate crowned as the carnival queen is that one showing excellent dancing skills, charisma and carnival spirit to the 11 members of the carnival board, who privately meet annually and elect the queen six months before the beginning of the carnival.

There are political parties with relatively similar ideology in Spain such as Falange Española de las JONS, FE-La Falange, Fuerza Nueva, Arbil, Democracia Nacional and the more moderate national Catholic Partido Demócrata Español. España 2000 advocates a mixture of socialism and conservatism centering on the defense of the traditional family, tighter control of Spanish borders to prevent illegal immigration, creation of a public banking system, more social spendings, better salaries and labor conditions for the working class, fight against economic and real estate speculation, abolition of the D'Hondt method and establishment of a more democratic voting system, more investment in the police and military as well as in public education and protected housing, priority for native Spaniards to gain access to jobs, and the immediate expulsion of illegal immigrants. They share some social conservative values set forth by the Roman Catholic Church with most of the conservative parties in Latin Europe, like Partido Popular in Spain or Popolo della Libertà in Italy. The party defines itself as socially and democratically populist.

In the case of a supply shock, while the weighted average inflation is at optimum levels, the inflation levels of the nations hit by such a shock may be far from optimum. In such a scenario, given that the degrees of price rigidity in all the nations are equal, the fiscal policies would achieve the dual goal of attaining optimum public spending and maintaining the natural levels of terms of trade only when the shocks hitting the nations under the union are perfectly correlated; otherwise either of the objectives is achieved at the cost of other as monetary policies fail to influence the terms of trade. But in case of varying degrees of price rigidities amongst the nations, the terms of trade are no longer insulated from monetary policies. This is so because the monetary policies would be directed towards keeping the inflation of the nations with a higher degree of price rigidities at optimum levels so as to reduce their terms of trade losses and the fiscal policies of the rest of the countries would assume a relatively effective role in stabilizing the national inflation as the price levels would respond to the change in public spendings.
