In a fantasy world of dungeon exploration, guilds go out on expeditions to raid dungeons, hoping to find the mysterious Golden Kingdom claimed to be the treasure of a certain island dungeon. The story starts with a failed mission, where six members of a team try to take on a dragon, but end up escaping at the cost of losing a member to the dragon's stomach. After this, two team members leave to join another team, leaving only Laios (a human swordsman), Chilchuck (a halfling locksmith), and Marcille (an elven spellcaster) to grieve over Laios’ sister, Falin (a human spellcaster). Feeling indebted to their close teammate Falin, who used magic to teleport the team outside to safety, the remainder of the team brainstorms how to get back to the dungeon level with the dragon in time to save Falin from digestion.

The blue infect the host with a lycanthropy-like disease that slowly transforms them into a red slaad. Despite being the means of producing the other slaad type, reds and blues despise one another. The abilities he has gained from being a Shade only function in areas of shadow or darkness; they include increased strength, the ability to heal rapidly, shadow walking (a form of short distance teleporting from shadow to shadow), and a regrown hand with superior strength that is only manifested in darkness. He can also create portals to the Plane of Shadows at his will. In addition to his Shade abilities, Erevis is a highly accomplished divine spellcaster.

An artifact has been forged which enables time-travelling spells while it remains in Sunnydale. Quintron playing Drum Buddy The Drum Buddy, invented by New Orleans Ninth Ward one-man band Quintron, is a light-activated oscillating drum machine which operates on the principles of an optical sound theremin. An electronic instrument developed in the Spellcaster Lodge QElectronics laboratory, only 44 units hand-assembled by Quintron exist. Its four voices – Space, Snare, Bass and Kick, are triggered by activating a photoelectric cell either intermittently or with an on/off DIP switch in combination with exposure to light. The Drum Buddy is outfitted with a light fixture on a periscopic pipe fixed to its base.

Necron armies often prefer to use overwhelming fire power as opposed to melee, though they do have several units capable of it, such as the Flayed Ones and Triarch Praetorians. While fragile, some Necron ground vehicles possess powerful shields, known as Quantum Shielding, that resist strong attacks. Being soulless, the Necrons have no psykers (though they do have some "spellcaster-like" units), which makes them somewhat more vulnerable to psychic attacks, as they have very limited methods of denying enemy psychic powers and no access to psychic powers beyond those granted to the various C'tan models.

It is capable of shapechanging into an almost unlimited number of forms, including being able to mimic others with near perfect accuracy. On top of all this, it is stated by Donald Morgan in Turn Coat that when a skinwalker kills a spellcaster, it consumes the victim's magic and adds that power to its own.

Many modern real-time strategy games have hero units, single units that are powerful, but limited in number (usually only one of a single type allowed). In addition to their normally very high stats, many heroes also have auras which confer beneficial status effects or attribute bonuses to any friendly units that enter within a certain radius of the hero. According to published background, Iggwilv is said to have once been named Natasha, and it is under this name that she was "adopted" as a child by the witch Baba Yaga. Under Baba Yaga's tutelage, Natasha grew into a talented spellcaster, and soon became known as "Natasha the Dark," perhaps in contrast to another adopted daughter of Baba Yaga, Iggwilv's "sister," Elena the Fair. Iggwilv next appeared in Ket some 300 years ago, in the 3rd century CY, where she was known as Hura. After being driven from Lopolla for plundering the Vault of Daoud (where it is assumed she acquired Daoud's Wondrous Lanthorn), Hura made her way to the Free City of Greyhawk.

A magic system that is limited by a number of spell slots will give a spellcaster a certain number of spells per day that may be cast. These spells may be divided by level, or limited to certain types of spells. When all of a spellcaster's slots are used up, he or she is no longer able to perform magic until steps are taken (usually sleeping and re-studying the spells) to recover the spell slots. This mechanic originated out of the Vancian magic system where "the number of memorized spells is strictly limited by the magician's memory capacity in proportion to the spells' difficulty levels, effectively granting a number of spell slots".

Armor and weapons can be collected as drops from monsters ingame, as well as being purchased from other players who sell their wares. Each of the five classes have different abilities, so picking the right equipment is essential (a spellcaster will be considerably weakened by using a blade, and the same applies to melee fighters who use a staff.) The game also features "Soul Gear", which has stats that are more powerful than any other gear at that level. Soul Gear is the best gear in the game to date, and when more than one piece of gear is equipped at one time it provides additional bonuses (more hp/mp, attack power, etc. to help your class).

In October 2007, Andy Dracons Giardina decided to resurrect Total Eclipse after the band's four-year hiatus from the scene, and simultaneously release the long-awaited second LP Spellcaster. After many hardships, including a brief stint with a reformed line-up that didn't quite work out, the quest to fulfill the reincarnation of Total Eclipse continued and, in 2008, the band found Brian Davy as the new drummer for the second line-up. In March 2009 Total Eclipse entered Faultline Studios in San Francisco to begin the recording of the third LP with the new line-up. The title for the new album is Kulkukan and has been recently released worldwide independently.

On the day of the treaty-signing, Rary—once a minor spellcaster created and then discarded by Brian Blume, but now elevated by TSR to the Circle of Eight—attacked his fellow Circle members, aided and abetted by Robilar. After the attack, Tenser and Otiluke were dead, while Robilar and Rary fled to the deserts of the Bright Lands. Rob Kuntz, original creator of Robilar, objected to this storyline, since he believed that Robilar would never attack his old adventuring companion Mordenkainen. Although Kuntz did not own the creative rights to Robilar and no longer worked at TSR, he unofficially suggested an alternate storyline that Robilar had been visiting another plane and in his absence, a clone or evil twin of Robilar was responsible for the attack.

Hart's Hope takes place in a realm called Burland in the midst of its medieval ages. Like many fantasies, magic is a real and functional force in this story's world, but with a grisly twist: all magic, whatever its purpose, must be paid for in blood. The larger or stronger the animal, the more powerful its blood; a dead animal's blood is also weaker than that of one still living, meaning that a spellcaster has only limited time to work their magic before the stricken animal dies. Burland also has a unique writing and language system in which words and numbers, when read backwards, or in rows or columns, can form entirely different phrases and meanings (a fact which Burland's greatest writers deliberately exploit).

Because skills and abilities are not usually lost, a game designer might decide to limit the use of such an ability by linking its use to magic points. This way, after using an ability, the player is required to rest or use an item to replenish their character's MP. This is done for balancing, so that each skill does not have an infinite casting ability with equal results every time. "Magic" may be substituted with psychic powers, spiritual power, advanced technology or other concepts that would allow a character to influence the world around them that is not available in real life. Magic is often restricted to a specific class of character, such as a "mage" or "spellcaster", while other character classes have to rely on melee combat or physical projectiles.

While a skilled mage and confident in his abilities, he is actually one of the weakest Tohsaka in history and considers himself as inferior in potential to Rin and Sakura, who were both recognized by Tokiomi as possessing extraordinary abilities from birth. Though he and Kiritsugu never have any actual one-on-one engagements, the two are perfect foils for one another, as Kiritsugu is a tech-savvy spellcaster who puts his job as a father ahead of his job as a mage, while Tokiomi is a traditional mage who puts his identity as a mage before all else. 1750\. The seminarian Giacomo Vigetti is forced to leave Bologna to avoid conviction, after having impregnated a girl and inducing her to have an abortion. The young man, looking for a place to take refuge, is directed to a villa, where he meets an old lady who, hidden behind a fresco, takes an oath of blood with him, having the sackcloth of Giacomo's mother delivered as a pledge, with the promise that will be returned to him once the task entrusted to him has been completed. On the indication of the mysterious lady, the boy takes refuge in Medelana, in the Bolognese Apennines, to perform the function of secretary in the service of an enigmatic character, a monsignor removed from the Church for his studies on the occult that earned him the title of "arcane spellcaster" ("mysterious enchanter" in some translations). The latter lives alone in an isolated house, surrounded by the volumes of a gigantic library, and Giacomo must replace Nerio, his previous assistant, who died in unclear circumstances and about who ambiguous rumors circulated.

Jaina first appeared in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. As per the game's campaign designer David Fried, in an early draft she was supposed to die and be raised as a banshee, but this plot element was scrapped and moved over to the story of Sylvanas Windrunner. In an interview with Warcraft developer Dave Kosak over World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, he revealed that much of the game's scenarios stem from the developers' desire to allow Jaina's character to be further developed and allow her to further participate in the story, similar to how "the way you might move some pawns aside on a chessboard so that the queen can come out and start doing some damage." Heroes of the Storm designer Alan Dibiri said that for Jaina's appearance within the game, she was "designed to be a straight-up spellcaster", and that "her abilities are cold- based, and she can cast area of effect damage and slow enemies with chill.” Heroes of the Storm designer Kent-Erick said that in designing the character, "we had a lot of fun working on Jaina's talents.
