The Prince Edward Island Reproductive Rights Organization (PRRO) is a special interest group advocating to have abortions performed in Prince Edward Island. To date, PEI is the only Canadian province that does not perform surgical abortions on its own soil. Abortions are provided by the PEI health care system at a nearby Halifax medical center. PRRO became active in November 2011, when they held a public education rally outside of the provincial legislature.

The canceled Mars Telecommunications Orbiter had been planned to establish an Interplanetary Internet link between Earth and Mars, in order to support other Mars missions.
The TPA's plans were opposed by neighbouring residents and community associations who together formed the Community Air special interest group to fight the expansion. The expansion became a primary issue in the 2003 Toronto municipal election. Mayoral candidates Barbara Hall and John Tory supported the bridge and David Miller opposed it. Miller and a slate of like-minded candidates for council ran on a common platform, the centrepiece of which was to stop the bridge.
Pre-conference tutorials have played an important role in ISMB since the first conference. Tutorials at ISMB 1994 included introductions to genetic algorithms, neural networks, AI for molecular biologists and molecular biology for computer scientists. Tutorials on computational mass spectrometry-based proteomics and ENCODE data access were presented at ISMB/ECCB 2013. Such spambots are web crawlers that can gather email addresses from websites, newsgroups, special-interest group (SIG) postings, and chat-room conversations. Because email addresses have a distinctive format, such spambots are easy to code. A number of programs and approaches have been devised to foil spambots.

In 1964, the Association for Computing Machinery started a Committee on Professional Activities for the Blind, which published a newsletter for four years and organized a conference in 1969. The purpose of the committee was to promote and support blind people as capable programmers. Cindy Cruz's contributions to the field have been of great benefit to the research in many different fields for example, Chicano/a Studies, Queer Studies, Education, Feminism, and other interdisciplinary fields. Her work has been recognized through several prestigious awards. More specifically her article “LGBTQ Street Youth Talk Back: A Meditation on Resistance and Witnessing” has earned her two important awards in 2012. One of the awards was for Article of the Year from the American Educational Research Association (AERA) through the Queer Studies Special Interest Group.
ACM SIGHPC is the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on High Performance Computing, an international community of students, faculty, researchers, and practitioners working on research and in professional practice related to supercomputing, high-end computers, and cluster computing. The organization co-sponsors international conferences related to high performance and scientific computing, including: SC, the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis; the Platform for Advanced Scientific Computing (PASC) Conference; and PPoPP, the Symposium on Principles and Practice of Parallel Programming.
In 2009, Ross was one of the first inductees into the Special Interest Group on Information Needs, Seeking, and Use Academy of the Association for Information Science and Technology. She later retired from teaching in 2010. In 2013, Ross was the recipient of the NoveList's Margaret E. Munroe Award for her “significant contributions to library adult services.” In 2015, her book "Shapes in Math, Science and Nature: Squares, Triangles and Circles" was shortlisted for the Information Book Award by the Children's Literature Roundtables of Canada.
In October 2009, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group has dropped development of UWB as part of the alternative MAC/PHY, Bluetooth 3.0/High Speed technology. A small, but significant, number of former WiMedia members had not and would not sign up to the necessary agreements for the intellectual property transfer. Marr is an advocate of inquiry-based learning in mathematics, a style of teaching through student research rather than through presentation of packaged solutions that is closely related to the Moore method. She was one of the founding officers of the inquiry-based learning special interest group of the Mathematical Association of America, which was established in 2016. She is an editor of the Journal of Inquiry-Based Learning in Mathematics, and serves on the board of directors of the Initiative for Mathematics Learning By Inquiry.
The chairman identifies a special interest group and invites the panellists to suggest films or books that would be of interest to it. The titles suggested are mostly modifications of well-known film/book titles to create a themed pun, thus the builders' book club might feature "Grout Expectations", a pun on Great Expectations. Some of the suggestions are more elaborate, including puns on the author's name or explanations of their topicality. As with the other common final rounds, the suggestions are made in no particular order.
Winners receive a certificate, a silver cup, and a small cash award, which is funded by a trust set up by David St John Thomas, one half of the David and Charles publishing company. The Society has regional groups which organise meetings and trips to places of interest, and special interest groups organised nationally. The Tracking Railways Archives Project (TRAP) is a special interest group of the society. Their aim is to locate and document sources for research in the historical study of railways.
With the arrival of WYSIWIG computers and software and laser printing, he co-founded the New York Macintosh User Group's DTP Special Interest Group. In 1984 he started Kramer Communications, one of New York City's first start-to-finish desktop publishing (DTP) companies; he sold the company in 1997. Kramer became involved in fax broadcasting and then with business development, usability and online marketing and promotion for a series of early online startups. Bygate was a lecturer at the University of Reading between 1986 and 1994 and at the University of Leeds between 1994 and 2003. He was an Advisory Professor to the English Department of Hong Kong Institute of Education between 2003 and 2004. Between 1989 and 1995 Bygate served as the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) Meetings Secretary and the Publications Secretary between 1988 and 1989. Between 2006 and 2009 he was the coordinator of the BAAL 'Language Learning and Teaching' Special Interest Group.
He became PARC's chief technology officer in 1996. In addition to his work in the field of computer science, Weiser was also the drummer for the avant-garde rock band, Severe Tire Damage, which was the first band to broadcast live over the Internet. On April 27, 1999, Weiser died of liver failure that was caused by cancer. In 2001, the Association for Computing Machinery's special interest group in operating systems (SIGOPS) established the Mark Weiser Award for individuals who innovate within operating systems research.
Bluetopia, the company's core product, was their implementation of the upper layers of the Bluetooth protocol stack. Bluetopia was first qualified by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group in 2000 and since had been used by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) around the world in personal computing, automotive, biomedical, mobile communications and consumer electronics products. Customers included Motorola, Garmin, Kodak, and Honeywell, among others. Bluetopia + LE was a newer version of the software that ran specifically for Bluetooth low energy technology.
The OPEN Alliance is a non-profit, special interest group (SIG) of mainly automotive industry and technology providers collaborating to encourage wide scale adoption of Ethernet-based communication as the standard in automotive networking applications. The member companies of the OPEN Alliance SIG take advantage of the scalability and flexibility of Ethernet to allow for cost- effective communication networks in vehicles with reduced complexity. An Ethernet-based communication network is also a key infrastructure element for future customer functions like autonomous driving and the connected car.
WITSML is a standard for transmitting technical data between organisations in the petroleum industry. It continues to be developed by an Energistics facilitated Special Interest Group to develop XML standards for drilling, completions, and interventions data exchange. Organizations for which WITSML is targeted include energy companies, service companies, drilling contractors, application vendors and regulatory agencies. A modern drilling rig or offshore platform uses a diverse array of specialist contractors, each of whom need to communicate data to the oil company operating the rig, and to each other.
Tuck is currently the co-editor of Critical Ethnic Studies a journal published by the University of Minnesota Press. She is also the co-editor of the Indigenous and Decolonizing Studies in Education book series published by Routledge. Tuck shares both of these editorial positions with K. Wayne Yang. Tuck has also held numerous positions with the American Educational Research Association including: program co-chair of curriculum studies (2015-2017), positions on the Executive Committee, and the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas Special Interest Group.
At IBM she researched the use of restricted English as a programming language and the use of natural language for mathematical programs. She was Programming Technology Planning Manager for the Federal Systems Division from 1968 to 1974, and was appointed Software Technology Manager in 1979. Sammet founded the ACM Special Interest Committee on Symbolic and Algebraic Manipulation (SICSAM) in 1965 and was Chair of the Special Interest Group on Programming Languages (SIGPLAN). She was the first female president of the ACM, from 1974 to 1976.
Zeiss is active in the Women in Leadership Special Interest Group of the Association of VA Psychology Leaders. The group wants to promote topics relevant for female psychologists in leadership positions and support them. She was Co-Chair of this group in the past, as well. In 2010 the Association of VA Psychology Leaders established the Antonette Zeiss Distinguished Leadership Award to honor VA psychologists who have shown expert leadership during their career and a strong commitment to the work of providing health care for Veterans.
It performs analyses on these data and facilitates others' use. Dr Hartley maintains strong ties with the University of Cambridge where he continues to be a Fellow of Clare College and an Honorary Member of the Computer Laboratory. He has recently become involved in the history of computing, serving for four years as Chairman of the Computer Conservation Society, a special-interest group of the British Computer Society. In 2012 he spent a year as part-time Museum Director of The National Museum of Computing and is currently a trustee of the EDSAC Replica Project.
The speech and language therapy special interest group (SIG) was established in 1987 and held a meeting each year immediately preceding the annual conference. In 1990, the Society began to offer some financial assistance for these meetings and began to provide facilities for speech and language therapy meetings in 1995. Other speciality groups then developed special interest groups and these meetings now make up an additional day alongside the annual conference with eight special interest groups meeting for the conference in Birmingham in 2013. The Society also assists in securing guest speakers for these meetings.
Media Computation To Attract & Retain Students — College of Computing Guzdial is currently serving as Program Co-Chair of the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE) 2008 Annual Symposium, the largest computing education conference in the world. Guzdial was Director of Undergraduate Programs (including the BS in Computer Science, BS in Computational Media, and Minor in Computer Science) until 2007. He is Lead Principal Investigator on Georgia Computes, a National Science Foundation Broadening Participation in Computing alliance focused on increasing the number and diversity of computing students in the state of Georgia.

The society has two regular publications, a bi-monthly bulletin of news and information, Amon Hen, and an annual journal, Mallorn, featuring critical articles and essays on Tolkien's work. They host several annual events, including a conference held at Oxford, Oxonmoot. Both the UK Tolkien Society and the Mythopoeic Society are organized into "Special Interest Groups", focusing on one area such as languages, and into local or regional groups which meet on a regular basis. The journal Parma Eldalamberon, founded in 1971, is a publication of one such special interest group of the Mythopoeic Society.
Jeff Spock is a full-time video game writer as well as author of science fiction and fantasy. A graduate of the Clarion West Writers Workshop as well as INSEAD and Brown University, he has lived and worked in the U.S., Japan, and now France. Spock is an active member of the IGDA Game Writing Special Interest Group, and is involved in numerous creative writing workshops. Spock is currently working as the Narrative Director and Lead Writer for an independent studio, Amplitude Studios, of which he is a member of the board of directors.
Theme Houses are an on-campus living option for students with a common goal. Residents of each house are expected to create and take part in programming events to benefit the residents, the special interest group they represent, and the campus community. Any full-time sophomore, junior or senior Otterbein student in good standing with the University is eligible to live in a University-operated house. Each house is advised by a University academic or administrative department which determines the selection process for students residing in the individual houses.
Sam Matsa whose background in graphics started with the APT project at MIT with Doug Ross and Andy Van Dam petitioned Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) to form SICGRAPH (Special Interest Committee on Computer Graphics), the forerunner of ACM SIGGRAPH in 1967. In 1974, the first SIGGRAPH conference on computer graphics opened. This annual conference soon became the dominant venue for presenting innovations in the field.SIGGRAPH is an acronym for Special Interest Group on Computer GRAPHics and Interactive Techniques and is sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
In 2007 he contributed the opening chapter to Game Writing: Narrative Skills for Videogames alongside other members of the IGDA Writers Special Interest Group. His namesake, Rich Dansky, appears as a player character in the scenario "And I Feel Fine," by Geoffrey C. Grabowski, which was published in the One Shots sourcebook for Unknown Armies. The fictional version of Dansky is described as "a bohemian academic living the simple life of a trailer park manager." Another role-playing game author, Rebecca Sean Borgstrom also appears as a player character in the same scenario.
The annual conference has been the origin of many notable milestones in the history of software testing including the introduction of the W-Model by Paul Herzlich in 1993, the foundation of Dutch Special Interest Group in Software Testing (SIGIST) TestNet at EuroSTAR 1996 and the foundation of the Test Lab (2009) which has since become a focal point at many international conferences on software testing. Proceedings at EuroSTAR have been cited in many publications on software testing and the conference is regularly featured on best international software testing conference lists and IT journals.
Susan H. Nycum is a lawyer who specialises in computer security and intellectual property issues. She worked at the law firm of Chickering and Gregory in San Francisco and then became a partner at the law firm Baker & McKenzie where she headed its IT and intellectual property group. She was a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and a member of its council. She was an early member of its special interest group for higher education, SIGUCCS, and was inducted into its hall of fame in 2004.
ACM SIGOPS is the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Operating Systems, an international community of students, faculty, researchers, and practitioners associated with research and development related to operating systems. The organization sponsors prestigious international conferences related to computer systems, operating systems, computer architectures, distributed computing, and virtual environments. In addition, the organization offers multiple awards recognizing outstanding participants in the field, including the Dennis M. Ritchie Doctoral Dissertation Award, in honor of Dennis Ritchie, co-creator of the renowned C programming language and Unix operating system.
Commenting on the Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United, in 2010 Paul said, "You should never restrict lobbying because the Constitution is rather clear about the people being allowed to petition Congress, and whether you're an individual or you belong to a [special interest group] ... you should be allowed to do that." He argues that corporations should be able to spend their money in any way that they want. He also opposes taxpayer-funded public campaign financing. Paul rejects the notion that corporations are people, with collective rights.
By 1959, Postley had determined that many non-scientific, business-type requirements that were common across applications and that functionality to address these requirements was being frequently recreated. He felt that it would be beneficial to gather users to discuss the issues. This led him to convene a conference at UCLA that was attended by over 500 people. One of the outcomes was the creation of the Special Interest Group on Business Data Processing (SIGBDP) in the Los Angeles ACM chapter, which at that time represented 10 percent of all ACM members.
It was formed by Gary Gygax and Rob Kuntz in 1970. Its starting membership included Gary Gygax, Rob Kuntz and Jeff Perren, and as of mid-April 1970, also included Dave Arneson. Gygax's interest in medieval warfare led him to create the Castle & Crusade Society as a special interest group within the IFW. Gygax's interest had turned to miniature games, so he and co-creator Jeff Perren put together a set of medieval miniatures rules for publication in a C&C; fanzine called The Domesday Book; the name of their new rules was "Chainmail".
The Aviation Special Interest Group (AVSIG) is a well known aviation message forum. It began life as a computer-bulletin board system on CompuServe Information Service before the start of the Internet proper.The AOPA Pilot: voice of general aviation, Volume 38, (see page 104 where it states AVSIG is "one of CompuServe's oldest forums") The organisation itself claims to be the world's oldest continually-operated online forum. It was founded by The Aviation Safety Institute's John B. Galipault (1930–93) and Sandy Trevor on the CompuServe Information Service in 1981.
In 2009 Nordic Game Jam became the flagship for the Global Game Jam, which started that same year during the same time. Chairman of the IGDA Education Special Interest Group Susan Gold organized an initiative with Ian Schreiber and Gorm Lai to have game jams around the globe in the same way as the Nordic Game Jam and with Nordic Game Jam as flagship, inspiration and model. The conference includes user presentation sessions, hands-on training workshops, exhibits, special interest group meetings, and a plenary session including a keynote presentation. User presentations are organized into several tracks, including teaching with GIS, using GIS for administration and policy-making, community projects, using GIS in libraries and museums, and research on the impacts of GIS in educational settings. Presentation materials are compiled into proceedings which are published online, after the conference. Hands-on training workshops address both the pedagogical aspects of using GIS in a classroom setting and specific software skills.
The Odour Special Interest Group (OSIG) is a sub-committee of the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand and provides forums for the exchange of information, encouraging improved practices in odour measurement, dispersion modelling, assessment, control, management and monitoring of odour effects. The current OSIG Chair is Geordie Galvin of Astute Environmental Consulting Pty Ltd. When required, the OSIG reforms one or all of its four subcommittees. These are responsible for investigating and developing approaches in regard to Odour Sampling, Odour Modelling Approaches, Community Impact Tools and specifying Separation Distances.
SysML Partners is a consortium of software tool vendors and industry leaders organized in 2003 to create the Systems Modeling Language (SysML), a dialect of UML customized for systems engineering. The consortium was founded and organized by Cris Kobryn, who previously chaired the UML 1.1 and UML 2.0 specification teams, and Sandy Friedenthal, chair of the OMG Systems Engineering Special Interest Group. The SysML Partners defined SysML as an open source specification, and their specifications include an open source license for distribution and use. The SysML Partners completed their SysML v.
During his undergraduate studies, Malan worked part-time for the District Attorney's Office in Middlesex County, Virginia as a forensic investigator, after which he founded his own two startups. On the side since 2003, he volunteered as an emergency medical technician (EMT-B) for MIT-Emergency Medical Services (EMS). He continues to volunteer as an EMT-B for the American Red Cross. Malan is also an active member of the SIGCSE community, a Special Interest Group (SIG) concerned with Computer Science Education (CSE) organised by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
Amber Settle is an American computer scientist and professor of education and theory in the department of Computer Science at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. She is known for her work in computer science education and her continuing service and leadership in Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE). She is currently serving as Past Chair on the ACM SIGCSE Board having been elected Chair from 2026-2019. SIGCSE is the premier international organization for computer science educators serving over 2700 members from more than 60 countries.
In order to draw a representation of a 3D object on the screen, the computer must determine which surfaces are "behind" the object from the viewer's perspective, and thus should be "hidden" when the computer creates (or renders) the image. The 3D Core Graphics System (or Core) was the first graphical standard to be developed. A group of 25 experts of the ACM Special Interest Group SIGGRAPH developed this "conceptual framework". The specifications were published in 1977, and it became a foundation for many future developments in the field.
After a youth recreation house in Fuchū began excluding LGBT members, the OCCUR (アカー akā) group began legal proceedings against it in 1990.Valentine, p. 104. In 1994, members of Gayjet, another group which eventually merged with ATAGLO, expressed their concern with CLAIR, the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations, for censoring and discriminating LGBT+ voices within the community. The now-merged ATAGLO started to work on a proposal so that they could become Special Interest Group (SIG) of AJET, a sub-organisation handling support and communities.
Gil was elected the chair of SIGAI the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group (SIG) on Artificial Intelligence for two terms, from 2010 to 2016. She is president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence for 2018 to 2020. She was nominated a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) in 2012, and a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery in 2016 "for leadership in advancing the use of artificial intelligence in support of science, and for service to the community".
Shih-Fu Chang is a Taiwanese computer scientist and electrical engineer noted for his research on multimedia information retrieval, computer vision, machine learning, and signal processing. He is currently the senior executive vice dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science of Columbia University, where he is also the Richard Dicker Professor. He served as the chair of the Special Interest Group of Multimedia (SIGMM) of Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) from 2013 to 2017. He was ranked as the Most Influential Scholar in the field of Multimedia by Aminer in 2016.

Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard used for exchanging data between fixed and mobile devices over short distances using UHF radio waves in the industrial, scientific and medical radio bands, from 2.402 GHz to 2.480GHz, and building personal area networks (PANs). It was originally conceived as a wireless alternative to RS-232 data cables. Bluetooth is managed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), which has more than 35,000 member companies in the areas of telecommunication, computing, networking, and consumer electronics. The IEEE standardized Bluetooth as IEEE 802.15.
Sizemore served as Professor Emerita at DePaul University, and a scholar in residence at the National Alliance of Black School Educators from the 1970s until her death. She was the recipient of four honorary doctorates and was a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, the Urban League, NAACP, and Phi Delta Kappa. She received a lifetime achievement award from the Research Focus on Black Education special interest group of the American Education Research Association. The School of Education at Duquesne University named the Barbara A. Sizemore Distinguished Professorship in Urban Education in her honor.
The Space Nursing Society is an international space advocacy organization devoted to space nursing and space exploration by registered nurses. The society is an affiliated, non-profit special interest group associated with the National Space Society. The society was founded in 1991 and has members from around the world including Australia, Canada, Czech republic, England, Germany, Greece, Scotland and the United States. The society serves as a forum for the discussion and study of issues related to nursing in space and the impact of these studies on nursing on Earth.
The Roman Catholic bishops of Massachusetts, replying in The Pilot, the newspaper of the Boston Archdiocese, said that Weld's "domestic partners" decision harms the common good "by making a special interest group equal to the family" and confuses "civil rights and family benefits". They asked: "Why should special recognition and assistance be given to friends who happen to share the same house?" Legislation to establish domestic partnerships that would carry spousal benefits was introduced annually in the State Legislature without success. Its supporters focused on equal benefits and fairness rather than same-sex relationships themselves.
In 2007 the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education gave Gal-Ezer their Award for Outstanding Contribution to Computer Science Education. She was the winner of the IEEE Computer Society's 2015 Taylor L. Booth Education Award "for outstanding research and its practical application in the field of computer science education". She is the 2017 winner of the ACM Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award, "for her central role in developing a groundbreaking high-school computer science curriculum, her outstanding CS education research and her extensive service to the education community".
The NZ Council consists of the president, two senior vice presidents (one of which must be a Māori), three vice presidents (representing women, affiliates, and Pacific Islanders), seven regional representatives, one Policy Council representative, three Caucus representatives, and the general secretary. The Policy Council, responsible for the development of the policy platform and election manifesto, is elected for a three-year term following each general election. The party structure also provides for Special Interest Group Councils: representing the affiliates, women's issues, Māori issues, Pacific Islands, primary industries, local government, and youth.
In online discussion media, satisfied consumers or "innocent" parties may express specific opinions in order to further the interests of an organization in which they have an interest, such as a commercial vendor or special interest group. In academia, this is called opinion spamming. Web sites can also be set up for the same purpose. For example, an employee of a company that produces a specific product might praise the product anonymously in a discussion forum or group in order to generate interest in that product, service, or group.
SIGMOD is the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Management of Data, which specializes in large-scale data management problems and databases. The annual ACM SIGMOD Conference, which began in 1975, is considered one of the most important in the field. While traditionally this conference had always been held within North America, it took place in Paris in 2004, Beijing in 2007, Athens in 2011, and Melbourne in 2015. The acceptance rate of the ACM SIGMOD Conference, averaged from 1996 to 2012, was 18%, and it was 17% in 2012.
The ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) series of academic conferences is generally considered the most prestigious in the field of human–computer interaction and is one of the top-ranked conferences in computer science. It is hosted by ACM SIGCHI, the Special Interest Group on computer–human interaction. CHI has been held annually since 1982 and attracts thousands of international attendees. CHI 2020, which was originally planned to take place on April, was cancelled due to COVID-19, and CHI 2021 will be held in Yokohama.
In 1996, she was inducted into the inaugural class of the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame. Daie then left the University of Wisconsin-Madison to focus on investing in technology startups through her roles as managing partner at Aurora Equity and member of the Band of Angels. Aurora Equity is a venture investment firm for tech companies in Silicon Valley, and there she focuses on investing in biotech and life science companies. At the Band of Angels, she is the chairman and founder of the AgFoodTech special interest group.
She is the recipient of ten Best Paper and Best Demo awards and was awarded Young Investigator Award by the European Science Foundation. In 2013 she received an ERC Consolidator Award for the ViDa: Transforming raw data into information through virtualization project. She is an IEEE and an ACM Fellow, a member of Academia Europaea, and the Vice Chair of the Special Interest Group of Management of Data (SIGMOD) within the Association for Computing Machinery. She is a member of the Expert Network of the World Economic Forum and CRA-W mentor.
Ratfiv is an enhanced version of the Ratfor programming language, a preprocessor for Fortran designed to give it C-like capabilities. Fortran was widely used for scientific programming but had very basic control-flow primitives ("do" and "goto") and no "macro" facility which limited its expressiveness. The name of the language is a pun (Ratfor (RATional FORtran) -> "Rat Four" -> "Rat Five" -> RatFiv). Ratfiv was developed by Bill Wood at the Institute for Cancer Research, Philadelphia, PA in the early 1980s and released on several DECUS (Digital Equipment Users Group) SIG (Special Interest Group) tapes.

The Neuropathic Pain Special Interest Group (NeuPSIG) of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) have recommended the clinical use of QST in the diagnosis and evaluation of patients with small and large fibre neuropathy as well as screening for deficits of the somatosensory system (which may include deficits in the brain for instance). The group also recommend that the technique not be used in patients in litigation, or with severe learning or cognitive deficits as it is likely to be inaccurate due to its psychophysical basis. The Electronic Publishing Special Interest Group (EPSIG) was founded to take over responsibility for the work from AAP. The consortium, sponsored by the Online Computer Library Center, recommended that the DTDs developed by the Electronic Manuscript Project should become an American standard. The American Library Association (ALA) works to provide library services to incarcerated adults and their families in the United States. ALA policy 8.2 (formerly 52.1) states, "The American Library Association encourages public libraries and systems to extend their services to residents of jails and other detention facilities within their taxing areas." In addition, The Intellectual Freedom Committee has interpreted the Library Bill of Rights to include Prisoners' Right to Read. He is recognized as one of the founders of the computer software industry and creator of the first computer software products, Mark IV. Mark IV pioneered the concept and business model of software as a product and became the earliest successful example of that model. In conjunction with Mark IV, Postley was responsible for the creation of the first software users' group, the "IV League", and the first Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group (SIGBDP, for business data processing).

The Annual ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms (SODA) is an academic conference in the fields of algorithm design and discrete mathematics. It is considered to be one of the top conferences for research in algorithms. SODA has been organized annually since 1990, typically in January. SODA is jointly sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group on Algorithms and Computation Theory (SIGACT) and the SIAM Activity Group on Discrete Mathematics, and in format is more similar to a theoretical computer science conference than to a mathematics conference.. A data exchange capability for distributed fibre-optic sensor (DTS) technology data was developed as an extension to the WITSML Standard based on previous work by BP. The DTS capability was reviewed and published with WITSML Standard Version 1.3.1 in December 2005. With the initiation of a related family of standards for production, PRODML, and its user community, the PRODML Special Interest Group, the DTS capabilities are being transferred to the PRODML Standards, which is more appropriate from a business function viewpoint. There will be no gap in support for DTS data exchanges as this transfer takes place.
SIGCSE is the Association for Computing Machinery's (ACM) Special Interest Group (SIG) on Computer science education (CSE), which provides a forum for educators to discuss issues related to the development, implementation, and/or evaluation of computing programs, curricula, and courses, as well as syllabi, laboratories, and other elements of teaching and pedagogy. SIGCSE is also the name of one of the four annual conferences organized by SIGCSE. The main focus of SIGCSE is higher education, and discussions include improving computer science education at high school level and below. Through his textbook, Ciottone first suggested the requirement that Emergency Management be a part of the knowledge base necessary for the practice of Disaster Medicine, something that is commonly accepted today. In addition to his textbook, he has written over 100 scholarly articles, chapters, and educational materials. In recent years, Ciottone has played a leading role in establishing a new Initiative he named Counter- Terrorism Medicine (CTM), Focusing on mitigation, preparedness, and response to asymmetric terrorist attacks. The World Association of Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WADEM) named him the Director of their new Special Interest Group: Counter-Terrorism Medicine.

The key interests groups that lobby on immigration are religious, ethnic and business groups, together with some liberals and some conservative public policy organizations. Both the pro- and anti- groups affect policy. Studies have suggested that some special interest group lobby for less immigration for their own group and more immigration for other groups since they see effects of immigration, such as increased labor competition, as detrimental when affecting their own group but beneficial when affecting other groups. Mogil and colleagues have published many papers detailing how the physiological mechanisms underlying pain perception differ by sex in laboratory rodents and humans, and he was among the first to call for the inclusion of female rodents in biomedical research. His team showed in 2015 that male and female mice were employing wholly different immune cells—microglia and T cells, respectively—in the spinal cord to process chronic pain. This SIG on design pedagogy aims to bring together design researchers, teachers and practitioners, and others responsible for the delivery of design education, to clarify and develop the role of design research in providing the theoretical underpinning for design education. The DRS Design Pedagogy Special Interest Group is bringing together other research which is directed to similar ends. Design research is not an irrelevant activity living in its own little ghetto, but rather it provides the basis for the academic core of design teaching and pedagogic innovation. By that means through the provision of the next generation of designers it links into design practice.

Around 1980, Dunn discovered CompuServe, an early online service popular with owners of 8-bit microcomputers. Dunn was the author of MU, an unofficial menu and mail notification program that ran on CompuServe's DEC PDP servers. Naehyuck Chang is a Professor of electrical engineering at KAIST, Seoul, Korea. Chang obtained his BS, MS, and PhD degrees from the Department of Control and Instrumentation at Seoul National University, of which he later became faculty member and later served as Vice Dean of its College of Engineering. In 2012, Chang was elected as chair of a Special Interest Group within the Association for Computing Machinery. Chang was named Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2012 for contributions to system-level power characterization, including thermal management and in 2015 he was named an ACM Fellow by the Association for Computing Machinery.
PRODML is a family of XML and Web Services based upstream oil and natural gas industry standards from Energistics and its PRODML Special Interest Group (PRODML SIG). PRODML Standards support automated production data acquisition, operations monitoring, optimization, reporting, and configuration management business processes. PRODML-based interactions are used by production software components, including field data historians, surveillance applications, model analysis and management applications, optimization applications, simulation applications, etc. The PRODML initiative was started in 2005 by five energy companies: BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell, and Statoil, joined by eight supplier companies: Halliburton, Invensys, Kongsberg Gruppen, OSIsoft, Petroleum Experts, Schlumberger, Tieto, and Weatherford as well as Energistics.
Robertson contributed 11 books and 150 articles and chapters to scientific literature. In retirement he wrote 4 nonfiction books and a novel, The HOA Murders. He was a member of the National Research Council/Institute of Medicine Committee on Trauma Research that produced the report Injury in America: A Continuing Public Health Problem and was vice-chair of the NRC committee that reviewed the injury control program of the Centers for Disease Control. He also served on the National Research Council Panel on Occupational Safety and Health Statistics and chaired the special interest group on Injury Control and Emergency Health Services of the American Public Health Association.
Kilgarriff argued against discrete classification of word senses and saw word senses rather as a continuous space of meanings largely defined by the contexts in which a word appears. His paper "I don't believe in word senses" (1997) became soon a state-of-the-art argumentation on the topic. The work on polysemy brought Kilgarriff to text corpora and corpus linguistics to which he devoted the rest of his career. He was one of the founding members and former chair (2006–2008) of the Special Interest Group on Web as Corpus (SIGWAC) of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) and also one of the founding organizers of SENSEVAL.
For example, his last research paper, published in 1956 when he was in his late eighties (at that time he was the oldest FRS to publish a paper in the Royal Society's journals), was on atmospheric electricity. The Wilson crater on the Moon is named for him, Alexander Wilson and Ralph Elmer Wilson. Operational Transformation was pioneered by C. Ellis and S. Gibbs in the GROVE (GRoup Outline Viewing Edit) system in 1989. Several years later, some correctness issues were identified and several approaches were independently proposed to solve these issues, which was followed by another decade of continuous efforts of extending and improving OT by a community of dedicated researchers. In 1998, a Special Interest Group on Collaborative Editing was set up to promote communication and collaboration among CE and OT researchers. Since then, SIGCE holds annual CE workshops in conjunction with major CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work) conferences, such as ACM, CSCW, GROUP and ECSCW.

Eyberg have published and reviewed many articles throughout her career, and one of the most well known book she published was "Parent-Child Interaction Therapy Protocol" the 2011 edition.
The Gödel Prize is an annual prize for outstanding papers in the area of theoretical computer science, given jointly by European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS) and the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Algorithms and Computational Theory (ACM SIGACT). The award is named in honor of Kurt Gödel. Gödel's connection to theoretical computer science is that he was the first to mention the "P versus NP" question, in a 1956 letter to John von Neumann in which Gödel asked whether a certain NP-complete problem could be solved in quadratic or linear time. The Gödel Prize has been awarded since 1993.
Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE, colloquially BLE, formerly marketed as Bluetooth Smart) is a wireless personal area network technology designed and marketed by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (Bluetooth SIG) aimed at novel applications in the healthcare, fitness, beacons, security, and home entertainment industries. It is independent of Bluetooth BR/EDR and has no compatibility, but BR/EDR and LE can coexist. The original specification was developed by Nokia in 2006 under the name Wibree, which was integrated into Bluetooth 4.0 in December 2009 as Bluetooth Low Energy. Compared to Classic Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy is intended to provide considerably reduced power consumption and cost while maintaining a similar communication range.
Members of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) who undergo specialist certification in neurology via the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) can administer vestibular rehabilitation exercises. While the APTA does not offer official certification in vestibular rehabilitation, it does offer courses regarding vestibular rehabilitation at introductory and advanced levels. The Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy and the Vestibular Rehabilitation Special Interest Group are working to have the APTA establish VR as an official specialty offered by the ABPTS. The American Musculoskeletal Institute (AMSI) offers a 3-day course that results in a therapist being designated a Certified Vestibular Rehabilitation Specialist (Cert. VRS).
James W. Faulkner (April 6, 1863 – May 5, 1923) was an American political journalist from Cincinnati, Ohio, whose career spanned local politics in Cincinnati and state politics in Ohio' his writings covered the presidential campaigns of both parties from 1892 through 1920. He started his newspaper career with The Cincinnati Times-Star, and in 1887 he joined the Cincinnati Enquirer. In 1890 at the age of 27 he was assigned to Columbus, Ohio to report on the Ohio General Assembly and state politics. He observed many lobbyists had invaded the chambers of the legislature by posing as newspapermen, causing special interest group influence on the floor of the House and Senate.

CBNL has since been appointed Vice Chair of Small Cell Forum Backhaul Special Interest group. As a member of Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Alliance, CBNL recently led a mixed group of both operators and vendors to generate consensus around the specific needs for Small Cell backhaul technology. Results from this work were published in July 2012 in the NGMN Alliance's white paper ‘Small Cell Backhaul Requirements’.

Evolutionary psychiatry, also known as Darwinian psychiatry, is a discipline of psychiatry that aims to explain psychiatric disorders in evolutionary, usually adaptationist, terms. Though heavily influenced by evolutionary psychology, as Abed and St. John-Smith noted in 2016, "Unlike evolutionary psychology, which is a vibrant and thriving sub-discipline of academic psychology with a strong and well-funded research programme, evolutionary psychiatry remains the interest of a small number of psychiatrists who are thinly scattered across the world." However, it has gained increasing institutional recognition in recent years, including the formation of an evolutionary psychiatry special interest group within the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Section on Evolutionary Psychiatry within the World Psychiatric Association.
In 2006, with funding from the NSF, the DO-IT Center partnered with University of Washington's Department of Computer Science and Engineering to launch the AccessComputing Alliance, a nationwide program to increase the participation of people with disabilities in computing fields. As of 2013, 32 postsecondary institutions and organizations are partnered with AccessComputing. The program provides summer research programs and internships open to all U.S. students.

Over the past 20 years, Bahl has been a keystone figure in the mobile computing research community, beginning with his 1995 co-founding (with Imrich Chlamtac) of ACM SIGMOBILE, the ACM's special interest group in mobility and tetherless ubiquitous connectivity. Under the auspices of SIGMOBILE, Bahl has served as steering committee chair of its flagship conference MobiCom, the International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking, since 2001. In 2003, Bahl brokered a deal between the two largest computer systems organizations (ACM and USENIX) to found MobiSys, The International Conference on Mobile Systems, Applications, and Services.
The Fedora Project is an independent project to co-ordinate the development of Fedora Linux, a Linux kernel-based operating system, operating with the vision of "a world where everyone benefits from free and open source software built by inclusive, welcoming, and open-minded communities." The project's mission statement is to create "an innovative platform for hardware, clouds, and containers that enables software developers and community members to build tailored solutions for their users". The project also oversees Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux, a special interest group which maintains the eponymous packages. The project was founded in 2003 as a result of a merger between the Red Hat Linux (RHL) and Fedora Linux projects.
In 2008, he and Rajeev Alur received the Computer Aided Verification award for fundamental contributions to the theory of real-time systems verification. In 2010, he received two test of time awards from the Logic in Computer Science conference (for papers published in LICS in 1990). In 2013, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2016, he and Rajeev Alur received the Alonzo Church Award for outstanding contributions to logic, from the ACM Special Interest Group for Logic and Computation (SIGLOG), the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS), the European Association for Computer Science Logic (EACSL), and the Kurt Gödel Society (KGS).
In England, support has been provided by the Forest Education Network (which has replaced the Forest Education Initiative) to those initiating forest school provision. Such provision is provided within schools using their own trained staff or by external independent forest school providers. Many organisations now offer training courses designed for the UK to enable practitioners to deliver forest school in their own settings and ensure children and teachers work within rich natural experiences. The OCN Level 3 training course is most widely recognised within the UK. Developing from the Institute of Outdoor Learning's (IOL) Forest School Special Interest Group, in June 2012 The Forest School Association was established as an independent UK body.
The Australasian Wader Studies Group (AWSG), established in 1981, is a special interest group of BirdLife Australia. It publishes a journal, The Stilt, usually twice a year, with occasional extra issues. Its mission statement is "to ensure the future of waders (shorebirds) and their habitats in Australia through research and conservation programs and to encourage and assist similar programmes in the rest of the East Asian - Australasian Flyway". The AWSG organises the nearly annual series of North-West Australia Wader Expeditions, which use experienced international cannon netting teams to catch and study the very large numbers of migratory waders that visit the beaches of Roebuck Bay near Broome, Eighty Mile Beach and Port Hedland in north-west Western Australia.

Chalmers died following a short illness in 1967. After this, the group was led at Durham by Walter Hutchinson, broadening to include collaboration between Durham's atmospheric physicists and astronomers. On 26 May 2017 the Royal Meteorological Society's Special Interest Group on Atmospheric Electricity held a discussion meeting at Durham's Physics Department to mark the 50th anniversary year of Chalmers' death, which included contributions by his former co-workers, and has inspired a biographical article.
Michael W. Foley (born March 2, 1964) is an American electrical engineer, wireless expert and executive director of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, a consortium of over 12,000 companies who come together to create and promote Bluetooth wireless technology. Foley earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University in 1992, a master's degree from Arizona State University in 1989 and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1985. Foley joined the Bluetooth SIG in March 2004 as the Executive Director. He is responsible for guiding the qualification and interoperability programs, promotion of the technology, the specification publications, and the long-term road map of Bluetooth wireless technology.
The exhibits provide access to businesses, government agencies, and other organizations with products and services for using GIS in education, including GPS hardware, curriculum and textbooks, software, and certificate/degree programs. Special Interest Group (SIG) meetings provide an opportunity for networking and in-depth discussion of specialized topics. Prior to the establishment of the EdUC, activities for educators were a regular part of the Esri UC. Today, these activities are designed to draw attendees from both the EdUC and the International UC, encouraging collaboration between academia, business, and government. For example, the Academic GIS Program Fair was launched at the Esri UC in the 1990s and has since become incorporated into the Esri EdUC.

He has held adjunct faculty positions at Stanford University and the University of Michigan, and currently chairs the Department of Computer Science in Colorado State University. Partridge is an ACM Fellow and IEEE Fellow, and in 2017 was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame.
ACM SIGARCH is the Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on computer architecture, a community of computer professionals and students from academia and industry involved in research and professional practice related to computer architecture and design. The organization sponsors many prestigious international conferences in this area, including the International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA), recognized as the top conference in this area since 1975. Together with IEEE Computer Society's Technical Committee on Computer Architecture (TCCA), it is one of the two main professional organizations for people working in computer architecture. ACM SIGARCH was formed in August 1971, initially as a Special Interest Committee (a precursor to a SIG), with Michael J. Flynn as the founding chairman.
Also in 1968 Arthur Appel described the first ray casting algorithm, the first of a class of ray tracing-based rendering algorithms that have since become fundamental in achieving photorealism in graphics by modeling the paths that rays of light take from a light source, to surfaces in a scene, and into the camera. In 1969, the ACM initiated A Special Interest Group on Graphics (SIGGRAPH) which organizes conferences, graphics standards, and publications within the field of computer graphics. By 1973, the first annual SIGGRAPH conference was held, which has become one of the focuses of the organization. The high-speed (AMP) feature of Bluetooth v3.0 was originally intended for UWB, but the WiMedia Alliance, the body responsible for the flavor of UWB intended for Bluetooth, announced in March 2009 that it was disbanding, and ultimately UWB was omitted from the Core v3.0 specification. On 16 March 2009, the WiMedia Alliance announced it was entering into technology transfer agreements for the WiMedia Ultra-wideband (UWB) specifications. WiMedia has transferred all current and future specifications, including work on future high-speed and power-optimized implementations, to the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), Wireless USB Promoter Group and the USB Implementers Forum. After successful completion of the technology transfer, marketing, and related administrative items, the WiMedia Alliance ceased operations.
On the other hand, the benefits are shared by a small special-interest group with a strong incentive to perpetuate the policy by further lobbying. Due to rational ignorance, the vast majority of voters will be unaware of the effort; in fact, although voters may be aware of special-interest lobbying efforts, this may merely select for policies which are even harder to evaluate by the general public, rather than improving their overall efficiency. Even if the public were able to evaluate policy proposals effectively, they would find it infeasible to engage in collective action in order to defend their diffuse interest. Therefore, theorists expect that numerous special interests will be able to successfully lobby for various inefficient policies.
In United States politics, a Sister Souljah moment is a politician's calculated public repudiation of an extremist person, statement, group or position that is perceived to have some association with the politician's own party. It has been described as "a key moment when the candidate takes what at least appears to be a bold stand against certain extremes within their party" and as "a calculated denunciation of an extremist position or special interest group." This act is intended to be a signal to centrist voters that the politician is not beholden to those positions or interest groups. Even within Mensa itself, a SIG (special interest group, an informal sub-group of Mensans sharing a particular common interest) has existed for Densa, which, like all Mensa SIGs, required Mensa membership for admission, while it was active. The concept of an organization for the mentally dense originated in Boston & Outskirts Mensa Bulletin (BOMB), August, 1974, in "A-Bomb-inable Puzzle II" by John D. Coons. The puzzle involved "The Boston chapter of Densa, the low IQ society". Subsequent issues had additional puzzles with gags about the group and were widely reprinted by the bulletins of other Mensa groups, before the concept of a low IQ group gained wider circulation in the 1970s, with other people creating quizzes, etc.
The Czech and German workers associations developed two different international organizational projects; both aimed at evolving their groups into an international conference of working Esperantists that would meet simultaneously with the 1914 tenth World Esperanto Congress (Universala Kongreso de Esperanto) in Paris, but this was not implemented. At the earlier World Congresses in Geneva (1906), Cambridge (1907), Antwerp (1911), Kraków (1912) and Bern (1913), the workers took part in special gatherings as the so-called Ruĝula Kongreseto ("Little conference of Reds"). These enabled awareness and exchange of experiences, but had no have practical results. In 1911, the Universal Esperanto Association tried to set up a special interest group for workers, but did not succeed.

In current versions, such multimedia data can be stored as BLOBs (binary large objects), but they are generic bitstreams. International Interactive Communications Society (IICS) is a professional trade association for companies and individuals involved in interactive media. The organization traces its roots to the days of interactive laser disc production in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1980s. Originally the society was proposed as a special interest group of the International Television Association (ITVA), now known as Media Communications Association – International (MCA-I), but the charter members decided to establish the society as an independent entity with different membership requirements for the new interactive and computer based communications. WITSML(tm) Standards support the “right time” seamless flow of drilling and completions data between data producers and data consumers to speed and enhance decision-making in the drilling and completions domain. Mowshowitz formalized and extended Rashevsky's idea and characterized the structural complexity of various classes of graphs and binary operations on graphs. Two measures of structural complexity were defined, both relative to a partition of the vertices of a graph. One of the measures, based on a partition related to independent sets, stimulated Körner's development of graph entropy. Mowshowitz was an early and persistent advocate of and contributor to studies of the social relations of computing. He introduced an undergraduate course on that topic at the University of British Columbia in 1973; published a comprehensive text in 1976; served as vice-chairman (1983–1985) and chairman (1985–1987) of the ACM's Special Interest Group on Computers and Society; and was a member of IFIP Working Group 9.2 (Computers and Social Accountability) from 1977 to 1997.
In early 1984, Ben Baker was planning on starting a BBS for the newly forming computer club at the McDonnell Douglas automotive division in St. Louis. SIGDA is organized and operated exclusively for educational, scientific, and technical purposes in electronic design automation. SIGDA's bylaws were approved in 1969, following the charter of SIC (Special Interest Committee) in Design Automation in 1965. Intelligent Input/Output (I2O) is a defunct computer input/output (I/O) specification. I2O was originally designed to make use of the Intel i960 microprocessor as the I/O offload engine, bringing channel I/O to the PC. Csuri became best known for pioneering the field of computer graphics, computer animation and digital fine art, creating his first computer art in 1964. He was described by the Smithsonian as the "father of digital art and computer animation", and as a leading pioneer of computer animation by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group Graphics (ACM SIGGRAPH). Between 1971 and 1987, while a senior professor at Ohio State University, Csuri founded the Computer Graphics Research Group, the Ohio Super Computer Graphics Project, and the Advanced Computing Center for Art and Design, dedicated to the development of digital art and computer animation. Csuri was co-founder of Cranston/Csuri Productions (CCP), one of the world's first computer animation production companies.

He is a co-founder and first chairman of the board of the National Storage Industry Consortium (now Information Storage Industry Consortium, INSIC) founded in 1991 to enhance industry competitiveness thru cooperation between universities and industry. Mee is one of the founding members of and has been a major contributor to the Storage Special Interest Group at the Computer History Museum, Mountain View, California.

Latterly, he has become interested in applying these techniques in the commercial sphere to look at issues of corporate responsibility and sustainability in industries like mining and agriculture which have significant ecological footprints. He has also been involved in both computational neuroscience and systems biology, the former association resulting in many papers while working at Oxford University.
Much of what has been written about the history of CPNP comes from an article in the Encyclopedia of Clinical Pharmacy written by CPNP's second president (1999-2000), Alex A. Cardoni. Although pharmacists had been practicing in psychiatric and neurological practice settings prior to the formation of CPNP, there was no formal professional organization focused on neuropsychiatric pharmacy prior to the formation of CPNP. In October 1994, a group of pharmacists held a meeting in Austin, Texas to discuss and plan the formation of a national professional organization dedicated to neuropsychiatric pharmacy. The resultant Conference of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists was composed of forty neuropsychiatric pharmacists, a special interest group of pharmacists that met at the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) Annual Meetings and held a post-continuing education programming conference.

Anderson claimed that in 1932 he was initiated into a witchcraft group in Ashland that he called the Harpy Coven, although remains the only source testifying to the group's existence. In about 1998, he visited the Auditory Neuroethology Laboratory at the University of Maryland and was interviewed about his experience with facial vision. The researchers in the lab study bat echolocation and were aware of the Wiederorientierung phenomenon described by Griffin (1959), where bats, despite continuing to emit echolocation calls, use path integration in familiar acoustic space. Scadden indicated that he found echolocation required extra effort, and would not use it to navigate in familiar areas unless he was alert for obstacles, thus providing insight into the bat behavior. The Python programming language was not originally designed for numerical computing, but attracted the attention of the scientific and engineering community early on. In 1995 the special interest group (SIG) matrix-sig was founded with the aim of defining an array computing package; among its members was Python designer and maintainer Guido van Rossum, who extended Python's syntax (in particular the indexing syntax) to make array computing easier. After teaching as a professor of English at the University of Illinois-Chicago, Nystrand moved to the Department of English at the University of Wisconsin–Madison where he served as architect of a campus-wide reform of undergraduate writing curriculum and founded the doctoral program in Composition & Rhetoric. While also at Wisconsin, he served as a director of the National Research Center on English Learning & Achievement (CELA). Awarded more than $9 million in grants over the course of his career, he was president of the American Education Research Association Special Interest Group for Writing Research, 1991-1993, as well as the National Conference for Research on Language & Literacy (NCRLL), 2002-2003. Around 1965 or 1966, Sammet noticed a need for the exchange of intellectual information with others working with languages and software while she worked on FORMAC. She was a member of ACM for a number of years but was not active until she became interested in starting a special interest group that would allow her to speak with other professionals in the field.
