Proteins of the NCS1 family are 419-635 amino acyl residues long and possess twelve putative transmembrane α-helical spanners (TMSs). At least some of them have been shown to function in uptake by substrate:H+ symport. In these respects, and with respect to substrate specificity, these proteins resemble the symporters of the NCS2 family, providing further evidence that the two families represent distant constituents of a single superfamily, the APC Superfamily. The two families probably arose by an early gene duplication event that occurred long before divergence of the three major kingdoms of life.

The use of pistols in duels became popular in Britain, France and America during the mid-eighteenth century. Initially standard holster or travelling pistols were mainly used, but by the end of the century special-purpose duelling pistols were being made by craftsmen in England, France, Germany, Austria and America. In event of an irretrievably snagged or damaged umbilical and a need for in-water decompression, the original umbilical can be detached from helmet and harness and a replacement fitted in the water by a standby diver. The method is simple - the new umbilical is secured to the diver's harness, the diver goes onto bailout, the gas supply on the original umbilical is shut down, and the umbilical connections are disconnected using the appropriate spanners (wrenches). Working with Les Allen, Padgett conducted pioneering work on optical angular momentum, for which they were awarded in 2009 the Young Medal. The research group he leads is best known for its work on the fundamental properties of light's angular momentum, including optical tweezers and optical spanners, the use of orbital angular momentum states to extend the alphabet of optical communication (with both classical and quantum light), and demonstrations of an angular form of the EPR paradox. On 28 August, the men at Archangelsk formed an Erection Party (sic) of 36 men under the engineer-officer Flight-Lieutenant Gittins and Warrant Officer Hards. The men went by boat to Keg Ostrov and found fifteen crates on a mud flat near the hangars. One crate was emptied to accommodate the wireless section and then the men found that some types of specialist tools had been omitted from the maintenance kits but that tropical insulation covers for the engines had been included. A Russian engineer officer improvised airscrew and spark-plug spanners in the airfield workshop and later built proper engine covers, with a trunk underneath for a "hot air lorry" to boost the temperature of the engine.

Grunwald drew attention as a solo artist with the release of his debut studio album, Introducing Ash Grunwald, a collection of blues standards and originals, including "Dolphin Song," which is based on a real life encounter Grunwald experienced with a shark and the pod of dolphins that came to his rescue. The positive response to Grunwald's debut resulted in two Australian Blues Awards (The Chain Awards) for 'Best Emerging Talent' and 'Male Vocalist of the Year' in 2003. In 2004, released his follow up album I Don't Believe, On the album, Grunwald emulated Tom Waits experimental bang and clang percussion using hammers, spanners and pots. The Tripti Ensemble Crew are an inter-dimensional, time-travelling puppet rock band from 'Parts (and times) Unknown' who appeared in 2 episodes of Radiohead Television and the subsequent DVD 'The Most Gigantic Lying Mouth of All Time' in 2004. They have since slipped into an unknown parallel universe. Their members were: MC Pi on vocals and time spanner; DJ Angel on turntables, guitars, harmonic generator, and nano-guitar; Chillbit on drums and pre- cussion; and Chances on bass, bubble organ, lumberhorn, and Tongos. Their manager, Sid Sparks -also known as 'Nige'- absconded with most of their earnings in 2003 and fled to the 1960s where he became Dr. Max Jacobsen and invested in Beatle puzzles, time spanners and vintage cameras.

Bioinformatic analyses have revealed that some ACR3 porters are involved in operons together with ArsA-like ATPases, implying that some of these porters may be driven by ATP hydrolysis as primary active transporters.

However, MctP of Rhizobium leguminosarum may take up monocarboxylates via an H+ symport mechanism as a dependency on Na+ could not be demonstrated and uptake was strongly inhibited by 10 μM CCP. Faham et al., (2008) reported the crystal structure of a member of the solute:soduium symporter (SSS) family, the Vibrio parahaemolyticus sodium:galactose symporter, vSGLT (, ). The approximately 3.0 angstrom structure contains 14 transmembrane α-helices in an inward-facing conformation with a core structure of inverted repeats of 5 TM helices (TM2 to TM6 and TM7 to TM11).
