Turning to companies that are associated more with apps and software, the Ubers of the world have thrown a spanner into the works not just by becoming a force for getting transportation on demand — but by doing so efficiently enough that some might even start to question whether they need to own a car for themselves in the first place, pointing to a direct threat to the likes of GM. And with the advances of machine learning, artificial intelligence and sensors that can read and parse more and more data, the number of tech companies getting involved is only growing.
