At the same time, automated systems rapidly improved, narrowing the benefits of a crewed space platform over an automated one. The Columbus Man-Tended Free Flyer (MTFF) was a European Space Agency (ESA) program to develop a space station that could be used for a variety of microgravity experiments while serving ESA's needs for an autonomous manned space platform. It consisted of a Columbus module docked to a service module containing solar power collectors, communications and other services. The program ran from 1986 to 1991, was expected to cost $3.56 billion including launch and utilization, and was cancelled while still in the planning stage. Aspects of the program were later realised in the Columbus science laboratory attached to the International Space Station (ISS).

Recalled from his exercise, Derek Flint hypnotizes Cramden with his watch, which incorporates lights specifically designed for such a purpose, and learns the details of the encounter with Lisa. Tests of trimmings from Cramden's mustache (secured through the use of the ubiquitous, multi-talented cigarette lighter) reveal traces of "euphoric acid", a drug that when mixed with alcohol leaves the subject mildly sedated and aroused. Investigating further, Flint breaks into Z.O.W.I.E. headquarters and discovers that the two astronauts on the recently launched space platform are, in fact, Russian female cosmonauts.

Columbus ISS module In 1987 the ESA approved the Columbus laboratory. 1988, Europe was working on several space projects including the Columbus module, the Man-Tended Free Flyer (MTFF), and the Polar Platform (PPF), supported by the Ariane 5 rocket and the Hermes spaceplane. The Columbus Man-Tended Free Flyer (MTFF) was an ESA programme to develop a space station that could be used for a variety of microgravity experiments while serving ESA's needs for an autonomous manned space platform. The MTFF would be a space station without long term life support, visited by short term crews to replenish and maintain experiments in a Zero-G environment free of vibrations caused by a permanent crew.

It will provide a waystation for deeper exploration of space, prevent "them" from continuing to threaten freedom around the world via atomic war by providing both monitoring and near-space military supremacy to the USA, and serve humanity by providing a facility to conduct "nuclear experiments" too dangerous to perform on Earth. The construction project is subject to a relentless campaign of sabotage by its enemies (obviously the Communists, though they are never explicitly named as such). The forms of sabotage include murder, blackmail, fuel tampering, missile attacks on flights, bombings of ground supply routes, and even radiological terrorism.

The newscast is also known as "FTL Newsfeed" and is delivered by a "virtual news anchor", a disembodied photorealistic human male head (played onscreen by actor Joseph McKenna) that has been processed with visual effects to accentuate the mood of the messages it conveys. Whether this news anchor is a true virtual construct that is controlled by an Artificial Intelligence or if this is a real human that is visually augmented is not revealed.

Ro-Man Extension XJ-2 (Barrows), referred to as just Ro-Man (a creature with an ape's body and what is often and erroneously described as a diving helmet for a head), has destroyed all human life on Earth with a Calcinator death ray, except for eight humans who remain alive. The survivors are a Professor (John Mylong), whose name is never mentioned; his wife (Selena Royle); their two daughters, Alice (Barrett) and Carla (Pamela Paulson); their young son, Johnny (Gregory Moffett); the Professor's assistant, Roy (Nader); and space pilots Jason and McCloud (neither of whom is seen or heard). Both pilots depart in a rocket ship for an orbiting space platform. All eight have developed an immunity to Ro-Man's death ray, having received an experimental antibiotic serum developed by the Professor.

Savage also learns that during World War II he was Kreiger's guinea pig in genetic experiments and now he possesses super strength and increased reflexes, these "powers", as his whole physical condition wanes from time to time. Savage is then introduced to his new team, a squad of 6 experts in different scientific fields, all well seasoned sergeants, but unable to follow direct orders, after a brief skirmish, Savage takes control of them, now calling themselves the "Screaming Eagles". Kreiger is later seen communicating to Cobra Commander that the ties between their two organizations no longer bind, how he helped the Cobra Command formation and how he will destroy them if he interferes with his plans. At the same time, the Eagles are checking the invading robot's remains, and they realize that the space platform Kreiger, who now calls himself "General Blitz" helped to build is really a Doomsday device meant to control every computer system on the planet (aiming mainly at the Strategic Defense Initiative), so Savage and his team go forth to stop Blitz, his plans, and his new, completely robotic I.R.O.N. Troopers.

Several flights were anticipated with a probable transition into a more extended mode of operation, possibly in association with a future space platform or space station. However, after the 1986 Challenger disaster, the Centaur LH2–LOX upper stage, which would have been required to place it in its final orbit, was banned from Shuttle use.
