Solar radiation management is one of the more controversial geoengineering tactics under development, and some critics faulted the group for not trying hard enough to inform the public of its plans or of the potential risks.
"Pulling carbon from the atmosphere is very desirable if we could achieve it at scale," said Andy Parker, co-author of the Royal Society report and project director at the Solar Radiation Management Governance Initiative (SRMGI).
It would also trigger further warming of the planet by removing ice that reflects solar radiation back into space, disrupt weather patterns across the Northern Hemisphere and melt permafrost, thus releasing more carbon gases into the atmosphere.
At an event in Washington, DC today, Harvard professor David Keith announced his new plan for testing his solar radiation management ideas, partnering with an Arizona launch site and a high-altitude balloon company called World View Enterprises.
"If the solar radiation management is halted for any reason, then a rapid warming would result, with likely catastrophic consequences," Dennis Hartmann, a professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington told tech and science website Futurism.
How exactly the Red Planet could have maintained an Earth-like climate 3.8 billion years ago is something of a mystery, however, given that ancient Mars only received 75 percent of the solar radiation that modern Mars does.
There is also an immediate risk that just one country, a small group of countries or even a very wealthy individual could unilaterally deploy a planet-wide solar radiation management scheme before anyone truly understands the potential risks.
Along the way, the interstellar probe will explore the Kuiper belt and answer a number of questions that scientists have, including what happens when solar radiation leaves the solar system and what happens when cosmic background radiation enters.

And that means you also have to account for a whole planet's worth of data: temperature and pressure readings and wind-speed metrics, from as many places as you can manage, along with various annoying, fiddly things—like water vapor and solar radiation, or the presence of valleys and mountains.
The nation's average level of solar radiation is between 2,000 to 3,200kWh per square meter a year, but this country on the verge of the African Sahara still imports enough gas to operate electricity generating plants all over the country and solar energy is more myth than reality in warm, sunny Egypt.

Among them: the fact that the moon and Earth are genetically related and formed from different proportions of a common reservoir of materials; confirmation that the moon is lifeless and home to no living organisms, fossils, or native organic compounds; and recognition that the moon's surface is covered by rock fragments and dust known as the "lunar regolith," whose four-billion-year, solar-radiation history provides valuable clues to understanding climate changes on Earth.
